Arians Won’t Name A No. 3 Receiver

September 2nd, 2020

Justin Watson

The Bucs have a clear second tier in the receiving corps after Mike Evans and Chris Godwin.

It consists of two guys.

They’re third-year man Justin Watson and second-year man Scotty Miller (Tommy’s new BFF.)

Joe asked Arians after practice today about what the No. 3 receiver battle looks like behind the big guns. The head coach basically said there’s no winner and he’s happy about it.

“It’ll probably depend on the play and the personnel group,” Arians said. “You know, Justin Watson’s had a hell of a camp; Scotty’s had a great camp. So if they’re our 1 and our 2, I’m fine. I mean, they’re battling. It’ll be just whatever personnel group you put him in for, whatever we’re looking for [on a] single play. But those two guys, they’re locked in solid. The No. 5 & 6 spots are still a battle.”

Developing players rising up to give an offensive minded head coach confidence. It’s a beautiful thing. If only the Bucs could pick running backs like they have receivers.

    Its Gronk baby!!!!

  2. Sarasota Garey Says:

OJ, Gronk, Brate, Miller, Watson, pick 1.

  3. Sport Says:

Pretty awesome to hear they are both doing well.

Now if we could just get Joe to solve his own puzzle.

Run stopping defense is passé, but having a running game is not. Hhhmmm….

    In BA I Trust!

  4. JonJohn Says:

Miller is the next guy that Brady turns into a superstar

    Joe:

I’m surprise you didn’t pick up on what BA said “The No. 5 & 6 spots are still a battle.”

Looks like we are keeping 6 WR … Of course, it all could change tomorrow. Joe’s not focused on the 6. –Joe

Since Miller most likely plays the outside when Godwin moves to the slot, he most likely will be #3. Arian likea big WR to play the slot and most likely will play behind Godwin.

  7. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

Oops – Since Arian likes big WRs to play the slot, Watson most likely will play the slot behind Godwin.

Speaking of that 5th and 6th spot, what’s up with Tyler Johnson? I heard he had been injured, but is he back in action? Any chance he makes the roster at this stage? Dude seemed to be an answer for depth at WR, but not if he’s unavailable… certainly no chance at 3 or 4 as some hoped (raises hand) on draft day.

    Limited by injuries.

I heard he had been injured, but is he back in action?

    Not sure currently.

Any chance he makes the roster at this stage?

Guessing injured reserve or practice squad (if he doesn’t get picked up).

Anyone you throw in will feast. They’ll draw the #3 CB, S, or LB.

I’m reading nothing but praise for both guys.

    Good problem to have.

  11. ModHairKen Says:

Well, this is just about as disappointing as the fact that there’ll be no fans for the first two games.

  12. Jaymiss Pick6 Again Says:

Sounds like a good problem to have. As far as Joe’s comment about “Not focused on the 6” I get it and respect it. Just throwing this out though – I’m very interest in the 6th. I think that’s a default punt or kick off returner slot. Two for the price of one as in Karl “The Truth” Williams.

Joe says concerning Tyler Johnson roster status, “Guessing injured reserve or practice squad (if he doesn’t get picked up).”

The way BA has been raving about selecting Tyler Johnson in round five of the draft, I doubt he would expose Johnson to being picked up. My guess is that Tyler will be the fifth or sixth WR on the 53 roster, that is unless as Joe also suggested, he heads to injure reserve.

  14. Leighroy Says:

Yea that was my main worry ABF. Teams with lesser depth would likely be bowled over to pick up a guy even from the practice squad who some labeled as a 5th round steal in the draft.

I think the 5th and 6th spots will be intriguing this week and next, and can’t believe the 4th player taken by the Bucs in the draft this year elicits a collective shoulder shrug from BucNation.

Good revievers good competetion.All.I know is Scottie Miller needs to be used ALL OVER THE FIELD!!!!! That dude SHOULD be the weapon that opposing defensive coodinators fear which will open the entire field up. Miller will get his.The already have huge targets across the boards.Millers speed is the missing component to this offense being possibly the deadliest in the league.

  16. TOM Says:

Tanner Hudson would make a good #5, plus he could be used as a TE

There is no way he is a better tight end than Antony Auclair. He’s a misplaced receiver.

Hudson is this year’s (and last year’s) Great White Hope. Wasn’t he on the practice squad half of the season last year? No other team saw fit to claim him for their active roster.
