Paper Champions II?

July 17th, 2020

Has a word for Bucs.

Back in 2001, then Steelers cornerback Lee Flowers, leading up to a game against the Bucs, referred to the Tampa Bay as “paper champions,” suggesting they did a lot more woofing and not enough winning to back up the talk.

The Steelers won that game 17-10.

(The next season the Bucs rolled to their only Super Bowl title, but also lost to the Steelers on Monday Night Football. After that game, the Bucs ran the table, ending with a Super Bowl victory.)

Now is Saints corner Janoris Jenkins trying to call the Bucs paper champions again?

This time, it’s not because the Bucs are spouting off like the brash Bucs of some 20 years ago.

There is no doubt the Bucs have become the “It Team” this offseason after signing park-violating, home-invading, NFLPA-ignoring quarterback Tom Brady and trading for future Hall of Fame tight end Rob Gronkowski.

Joe has never seen the amount of hype showered upon a team like the Bucs have gotten this offseason. It’s unreal.

Jenkins seems a bit peeved by this, claiming until otherwise knocked off their perch, the slimy Saints are the kings of the NFL South hill.

“We understand, as you mentioned, that Tampa Bay got some new weapons, new quarterback,” Jenkins said on NFL Network, as documented by Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk. “It’s paper, you gotta produce on the field.”

Well, let the games begin! Seems as if Flowers Jenkins is ready to throw down. Joe is confident the Bucs ready for the brawl.

Remember, unless the NFL does something to the schedule, the Bucs will open season in the Superdome on Sept. 13.

  4. Go Bucs 72 Says:

Jenkins should not be talking, Mike Evans destroyed him last season when he was on the Giants. Look for that to continue.

  5. bucs_1 Says:

yeah jenkins will have papers too after Evans sees him, he’ll have his walking papers

  6. Jaymiss Pick6 Again Says:

    Jenkins is right…until he’s not.

  7. WyldKat Says:

Stupid has infected and is now spreading in the Saints lockeroom.

  8. Rayjay1122 Says:

Every season is new. Can’t ride on what you did last year. Therefore every team is paper champions or paper losers this year.

  9. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Far as I’m concerned, everyone is a paper champion right now.

  10. Bradley Says:

Fact teller is only telling half the facts. What about ME and the guy who actually covers him for the Saints. Not usually a 3 TD game.

  11. Nick2 Says:

The same Jenkins that will abandon his team during COVID. Brady a paper champion??? WOW

  12. ToesOnTheLine!!! Says:

Hurts to say, but if I step away from being a Bucs fan for a moment and look at the situation from an unbiased perspective then Jenkins makes a fair point. I busted on quite a few Eagles fans who were talking SB that year they were dubbed “the Dream Team”. I still think the Bucs are a team on the upswing and not just paper champions (ala the Dream Team Eagles) because I think our coaching staff is better than what that team had.

  13. Nick2 Says:

Sorry Malcom Jenkins is the one who might opt out this year didnt see which Jenkins LOL.

  14. Roy T. Buford Says:

Good one, Joe, borrowing a tactic from John McKay’s (false) quote of Archie Manning saying “It would be a disgrace to lose to Tampa Bay.’ Keep it up!

  15. bucsfan951 Says:

“It’s paper, you gotta produce on the field.”

Like how the saints have produced on the field in the playoffs the last couple of seasons??? how many 1 and done post seasons again?

  16. yeah Says:

    He is 100% right.

  17. fernando diaz Says:

Fact Teller saved me the typing he took his lunch money and everything else.

  18. bucsince79 aka bumaneer Says:

2020 is going to be a tough season. If 10 starters teat positive for covid before a game who will replace them? practice squad? The Saints are real tough every year until the playoffs!!! Brees had very little arm strength at the end of last season. I’ts all down hill for the candy ass Saints when they will be without there HOF QB

  19. Lokog Says:

F@#k new Orleans their fans and their players that goes for Atlanta, carolina also

  20. Cobraboy Says:

    He is totally correct.

    The Bucs haven’t proven squat.

  21. webster Says:

You guys are idiots and you let joe pied pipper you to a dumb misinterpreted quote. What jenkins said is correct and joe is just feeding you fools chum. The bucs as of NOW is purely PAPER as in all those great names are only PAPER NOW!!!!Not one game let alone a practice has taken place yet. It is PAPER and it will be PAPER until they produce on the field just like all the other 32 teams. Why is that so hard for you to understand? Trying to find amunition where there is none shows just how slow some of you are. News flash, Brady, evans and any player around the league will tell you that at this point in time it is all only PAPER until further notice. If the bucs fail to produce this year, they would not be the first to have that fate after much offseason hype. Someone brought up the eagles. They were called the dream team for god sake and did not even make the playoffs. Last year cleveland was suppose to be very very good but did not make the playoffs. It happens every year to multiple teams. Thats why it is PAPER as of now.

  22. webster Says:

And to the very slow, all that i wrote in my previous post means that all those great names are only on PAPER as of now. We have no idea how all those great names on PAPER will perform together as a unit until they are on the field.
