Report: Vita Vea Asks To Be Traded

At least Devin White had the common courtesy to ask for a trade in April.
Vita Vea has asked for one on the eve of 2026 training camp.
Is it merely a stunt for a new contract, or is Vea an unhappy camper ready to leave town? Vea is in the final year of a 4-year, $73 million contract. Who could be happy with that kind of money? Not Vea.
Per Adam Schefter of ESPN, Vea has requested a trade. This comes after reports Vea wanted a contract extension this offseason.
Vea did not participate in spring practices. He was a “hold-in” during mandatory minicamp, meaning he showed up but didn’t practice. Vea was, however, working with his mentor and former Bucs defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh this spring. Suh is a well-known financial counselor, especially to teammates.
When White asked for a trade in the 2023 offseason, Todd Bowles and Buccaneers Ring of Honor general manager Jason Licht calmed him down and White played for the Bucs on the fifth-year option of his rookie contract. By the end of the season, White was benched.
If Vea truly wants out, then the Bucs should grant his request. It’s a little late to smooth over a nine-year veteran, and 31-year-old Vea should be able to command something nice in return. And it’s rare for an unhappy veteran to do an about face and thrive.
This is a poor situation, but the Bucs need to be realistic.
Of course, losing Vea likely would hurt the Bucs’ chances to have a special 2026 season. He is, unquestionably, a special player.

If San Francisco wants him, send him. Get the best draft capital you can and go find a young, hungry dog who wants to wear pewter and red and make a difference for the next decade. That’s how great organizations stay great.
His raw numbers were solid, but not dominant for a player seeking top-of-the-market money:

If Vitas asking price climbs into the $25–30 million per year range, it’s reasonable to argue we should consider maximizing his trade value instead of committing to another massive contract. Do what Belichick did in these situations. He’d trade them to the lousiest team possible, usually the Browns. It discourages the behavior in other players, and you get the highest possible draft position on the pick.

No chance Bucs trade him and little chance they redo his deal
1. What if Yaya blows up this year – he is young and will want a new deal
2. What if Kancey stays healthy and blows up – will be eligible to negotiate a new deal entering his 5th year option
3. Bucs or nobody can afford paying 3 starting DL premium cash
4. The QB is angling for a big deal but not asking for a trade. Instead focused on having a big year
5. Vita has a great example from reddick on what happens when u choose to sit out 6 games – no one will becoming with a giant deal after that – just one year deals
6. And the final thing… Todd Bowles can’t afford to lose Vita… period…

Anywho, said all along, extend him – or trade him. Not sure what his salary demands are, but while saying publicly you’ll never trade him, be shopping him around and see what offers are out there. I’d think realistically you could get a late 2nd out of him – for a team like Buffalo he’d be a huge upgrade – to the point that maybe you could even throw in a mid-round pick (like a 4th, maybe a 3rd if you also got back like a 5th) and move that to a 1st rounder.
But it also depends on what exactly his salary demands are.
Anywho, the worst possible scenario, I think, would be to just play out his deal and let him walk, that would make no sense – and no, relying on getting a comp pick is not legit. That only works if you don’t sign anyone and another team gives him a huge deal – it gets you almost nothing if they just sign with a legit contender because they want to win – like Evans did with the 49ers, when, as he said, he wanted to play on championship team with a good QB, and Tampa doesn’t that have.

Vita Vea won us a Super Bowl by pressuring Rodgers in the NFC Championship game, returning from a broken leg, and helping free up Shaq and JPP for 5 sacks.
I’ve seen bits come off the edge, take in two blockers, make some hustle plays in stopping the run. He’s a beast and a great player. We should absolutely pay him. He’s proven, and makes those around him better. Not happy he’s asking for a trade. 😢

Sure am glad they kept Bowles. Seems like proof of his amazing culture. And I’m sure Mike and Vea banging down the door to leave won’t affect our free agent pickups in the future. This has been brewing for awhile.
Best solution: Trade VV to the Rams. Licht might squeeze out the seventh rounder he lost being Sharp this year. He’ll be sad to get dumped on such a dumpster fire, especially when Donald comes back. Just as when a team has a lot of receivers we say there’s only one ball to go around, so Los Angeles will discover there aren’t enough qb heads to spread about.
In the alternative let him sit a year and find himself out $15 mill. Even a shiny new 2027 contract for a 32-yo won’t make up for this year’s Lost Wages.

From I can tell this is just reflective of ownership. Its was hot garbage before Brady arrived. There were even talks of him wanting out of Tampa his last year. We had a glimmer of hope with Liam and we held the door open for him. Extended the worst defensive coordinator in the league to a hefty head coaching extention and expect players to want to play here? Evans gone, david gone, vea wants gone, bakers tired of it. Bain and Trotter both looked absolutley pized off when they heard Tampa.
How many more signs can there be? The weakest link on the team is man tasked with leading it.

JL needs to be careful with Baker. Biucs are paying the wrong guys and being cheap with the guys that should be paid. For Vea though, he is under contract so the Bucs dont need to do anything. Situation sucks but Vea doesnt make the decisions when he signed the deal.

Vea wants that final big contract, if not from the Bucs, than from someone else. My guess is that Jason knows Vea is not in the long term plans and likely will be gone after 2026, especially if Bowles has a losing season which many on this site are already predicting. Guy is a solid player but not elite, he is not on the field for every snap which is a limitation, often on tge sideline when Bowles’s D gets shredded. Jason could give him a raise but Vea knows his situation and is being proactive. He saw his teammates on D quit on Bowles last season, it seems obvious to me that many Buc players may not be happy with Bowles despite the spin OBP puts out.

Vita Vea is a rare talent and one of the best DTs in the league. I’d contend he’s better at DT than Baker is at QB. I hope we can pay and keep both, but I really don’t think we can afford to lose vita and think we can make playoffs. It would be awful to see Licht and Bowles stay around if we lose Evans, vita, and fail to resign baker, all while not making the playoffs. Lol. 😂 I’d be ticked.

Why do casual fans (i.e. morons) often conflate a contract “restructure” with a generous move by the player, when in reality, a simple restructure is an absolute win for a star player?
When an elite player restructures a contract, they aren’t giving up a single dollar. In fact, they usually get their money faster and secure more job stability in the process.

Hate to inform Buc fans, but our franchise has always been noted for being cheap over its history. Vita is a fan favorite. Hate to see him go, but it is what it is. We kind of need him on defense, though. Not sure what kind of money he is asking. But if we wanted to, we could get something done just like other teams. I had us at 10-7 for the year. Might be 2 games under that now.

The Bucs can’t sign everyone. According to Spotrak, The Bucs only have a little over 25 million in cap space in 2027. That figure has Baker at 31 million. If Baker signs a new contract for 50 million, that would wipe out all of the 2027 cap space. Vea has only 2.3 million of the 2027 cap space.

Licht’s cap mismanagement is coming back to bite us. It is just the beginning. Vea saw the writing on the wall. He wasn’t going to get paid so he wants out. Vita git his feelings hurt because we signed a 31yr old DT for 2/3 of hat Vita will make but outperformed Vita in 2025 and has more career tackles than Vita. And, unlike Vita he’s a mean SOB.
I have little faith in Todd, but the eye in the sky don’t lie and it sees softies and loafers. Go check the run defense splits when Kancey is in/out. Vita fell off.
