Is It Rivers Vs. Jameis?

February 7th, 2020

“Jason, who the hell started this Joe Flacco bullsh!t?”

Now Joe has already brought word from a guy who has a pipeline to a heavy-hitter shot-caller at One Buc Palace who believes Decision Jameis 2020 has already been made.

Not everyone has such a pipeline.

Mike Jones of USA Today is trying to sort out the puzzle of NFL quarterbacks. He writes that there could be a seismic change of starting quarterbacks scattered among the NFL landscape this season.

And of course, the Bucs are among the teams.

In trying to decipher what quarterback will land where, Jones only links two quarterbacks to the Bucs: one is Mr. Entertainment, America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston.

The second is old man Philip Rivers.

Another candidate for the tag is Jameis Winston. In his first season with Buccaneers coach Bruce Arians and offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich, Winston passed for a league-leading 5,109 yards and a career-high 33 touchdowns. The bad news: He also threw a league-leading 30 interceptions, seven of which were returned for touchdowns. Tampa Bay could give Winston, who has struggled with ball security since his college days, one more year to see if his coaches can help fix this fatal flaw.

And typing about Rivers, Jones had the following angle:

All signs point to Rivers’ 16-year run with the Chargers ending this year after he moved his family to Florida. Could he wind up in Tampa if the Bucs opt against retaining Winston?

As far as Tom Brady goes, Peter King claims the Bucs are a “dark horse” candidate to land. Jones’ sources tell a different story. In fact, Jones claims Tennessee is not out of the question to land Brady.

Of course the Bucs could end all of this wild and rampant speculation (Joe Flacco???) with one text. But One Buc Palace has gone dark.

so JW has struggled with ball security since his college days…..

was it the rRB at FSU?…..or was it the o-line?…was it the defense?….was it the coaches?…..

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  2. Db55 Says:

Hey Joe, can you share or point to an article where any of these dudes were actually right about anything?

  3. sunshine Says:

Why would any bucs fan who wants a playoff team want to keep an inaccurate qb as Winston has shown for 5 years …I hope the bucs make a splash !!

  4. NPRSageBoy. Says:

    It was the crab legs.

  5. Dapostman Says:

Same posters triggered over every Winston article.

There definitely is some Nancy Pelosi is these folks.

  6. 813bucboi Says:

    oh i know…it was the kicker!!!!!!….lol…

    GO BUCS!!!!!!

  7. Joe in Michigan Says:

Nancy Pelosi? Hahaha, that gets my vote for post of the year!!

  8. TexBuc Says:

I believe if Winston is out his agent would already be leaking “links” and “interest” from other teams.

  9. Buccernutter Says:

Ah man these articles will certainly fool the influential. Jameis will be our qb in 2020. It’s a certainty. Argue if you want, but you’re wrong.

  10. Buccernutter Says:

    fool the easily influenced****

  11. SmoothBayRider Says:

    Buccernutter – A certainty ?

  12. Buccernutter Says:

Yes, a certainty. Like I said, argue or fantasize if you want. It’s a certainty.

  13. mark2001 Says:

On Wisconsin…Michigan Universities? Hilarious. Both major schools in MI, Ohio State and Wisconsin’s B.

  14. Eric Says:

Lets put this in context. Jameis threw 65 touchdowns at FSU. 28 ints.

That being said . seven pick six’s are way out of line.

Rivers is a heck of a QB, one of the best of his era, its very tempting to make that switch.

  15. SB Says:

As critical a fan as I have been the last yr., ( Complete fan right ), I still want him back for at least one more. When he is on he is ‘ON’. However, we all know what he is when he is off. I want to see the second yr in BA’s offense.

  16. Posey99 Says:

I’ve been saying Rivers to Tampa since mid-season. Everybody said no because he wouldn’t move his family. Please… That was a lame excuse, the players and their family travel all year long. Now he’s in Florida and people are talking about how far away the vacation home is from Tampa and how old he is. Please. Arm strength? please. Remember when everyone was saying the same thing about Peyton manning coming off a neck injury? Rivers didn’t have the weapons this year… oh melvin gordon? the one who sat most of the year and was out of shape when he showed up late season? People should be praying Rivers signs with Tampa he has the fire still and doesn’t have a ring. Rivers is also the perfect guy for a rookie QB to watch play for a couple years.

  17. Tye Says:

When the same person reports ‘high possiblity’ and then days later reports the opposite then he is damaging his own credibility…
When one is credible they wait until they get the scoop, not make up reports just to flip and flop days later…

  18. Tampabaybucfan Says:

We can bring Winston back for 1 year……but it’s likely the options next year won’t be as good for FA QBs……we will need to draft a QB.
So…..no long term contract for JW….& the need to draft a QB…..not good….

  19. Waterboy Says:

If the Chargers don’t want Rivers why should the Bucs?

  20. Troy Says:

This team needs to go draft a QB. Seriously, do the homework and draft someone who can do more than get us to the playoffs. I want a freakin Superbowl. Neither Winston nor Rivers will get us a Championship. I’m gonna go full Obi-Wan here – “Until the possible becomes actual, it is only a distraction. Be mindful of what is, not what might be.” All the distraction, all the fodder. It’s nothing. The reality is that we have a poor QB that we can attempt to resign. I hope we move on, but that’s because I don’t get distracted from the goal of a Superbowl win that I know Winston will never provide.

  21. Posey99 Says:

“We can bring Winston back for 1 year……but it’s likely the options next year won’t be as good for FA QBs……we will need to draft a QB.”

Exactly. This might be the best off season QB market ever and why would the team tie itself to Winston

If the Chargers don’t want Rivers why should the Bucs?”

If the colts don’t want Peyton Manning why should the broncos. If the patriots don’t want Tom Brady why should the bucs?

  23. BucBoy Says:

Didn’t Jameis win a championship at FSU and had the best winning percentage all time for a QB? He only started losing when he came here. Finally got a defense and we are trying to get rid of him.

  24. TexBuc Says:

I believe the Glazers will cast the deciding vote for Winston to be under center next season.

  25. Slugglife Says:

Bucboy- that’s because this is the NFL. The league that exposes you. Tebow also did nothing but win in college. You can name ten off hand who were college greats. They lost in the NFL.

  26. JimmyJack Says:

Waterboy how do you know the Chargers don’t want Rivers? How do you know it’s not the other way around? How do you?

  27. Stanglassman Says:

    Bucsboi-
Jameis was 27-1 at FSU so to answer your question, it was none of the above. Jameis had 40/10 TD/INT ratio his first season. 2nd year after they lost tons of players to the NFL and the team wasn’t nearly as good he still got them to the national championship game. So that’s 27 consecutive wins and a lose in his last game playing in his 2nd consecutive national championship game.

All Jameis supporters are asking for is let the man get a shot on a decent TEAM. To not give him a chance in BA system a 2nd year will be a huge mistake. We all knew going in it takes a full season to get BA system down. Yes he was playing with a bad defense the first 10 games, a awful running game and poor special teams play but it was all showing signs of improvement. Let Jameis be a part of the turnaround or it most likely won’t happen.

  28. 813bucboi Says:

    stanglass

his second year he had 25tds and had 18INTs, after having only 10 the previous year…..

that trend has followed him to the pros….when he plays a full 16games, he has 15, 18, and 30INTs….

his last year at fsu he went to the playoffs NOT the national championship game….mariota beat him, and mariota played in the championship game…..

the team is not as bad as the winston supports try to make everyone believe….

    GO BUCS!!!!!!

  29. footballjunkie Says:

So mister Mike Jones, thee mister Mike Jones, says his “sources” are better than Peter King’ s sources and self are then…right?? Pour him another drink.

Gang, thee mister Mike Jones wrote some pretty groundbreaking stuff up there no…

  30. Big_Buc$ Says:

If the Chargers don’t won’t him and he couldn’t win with that team setup in LA why would he win in Tampa? Hello folks take your hate out for one man and think. What has Rivers done besides durability? The years he went into the playoffs he has had what Jameis has had small pieces of. A good running game which he had a backfield of LT, Micheal Turner, and Darren Sproles and Melvin Gordon. Not to mention look how loaded that Charger Defense is. At this point your options are Winston is back for year 2 under BA or draft a QB at 14. Case in point folks can the defense play like it did the second half of the season the entire 16 games? Don’t overlook the games the defense gave up alot. Dont get me wrong I thing the issues in this order are RT, FS, RB, Playcalling and QB. I think if the top 3 are addressed we see a above .500 Bucs team in 2020. Not ready to say playoffs yet.

  31. WestChap Says:

Its going to get frothy thus year at QB. Dak laughs off $33M long term. JW will be upset if gets tagged at $27M for 1 year. Saw a nightmare of a mock draft with Tua, Herbert and Love all gone in top 10 via trades up… and even Eason as a late first rounder via another trade. The Bruces are going to earn their money this offseason (I hope).

  32. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Rivers might go to a new team, but not ours. More likely he will retire.

Brady will either retired or play year-to-year for the patriots.

Stafford might move on, but unlikely this year.

Carr might be released by the Raiders. He would be the most likely replacement of Jameis…but even that is not probable.

Bridgewater is a decent backup at best.

    Eli is retiring.

Brees is staying with the Saints.

Winston will be our QB this year. Period. No matter how much whining the ‘fans’ do. We might draft a QB, but not in the first round.

  33. Rod Munch Says:

Did any of you idiots wanting Rivers actually watch him play last year? Take all the worst moments of Winston, now times that by 2, and take away about half of all the good plays Winston made.

Rivers was a great, HOF level QB earlier in his career, but he’s old and washed up now. I don’t believe for a second the Bucs would dump the NFL’s leading passer and replace him with a worst version of Winston that is really old and on a steep decline. That would make zero sense.

If you disagree, it’s because you’re an idiot.

    God bless.

  34. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Big_Buc$ Says
“If the Chargers don’t [want] him”

Who says the Chargers don’t want him? All we have to go by are rumors at this point.

To be honest though, if Rivers was more like 32, I would take him in a heart beat.

  35. Mr. Reality Says:

How many times can an indiot recycle the same old stupid lines?

  36. TexBuc Says:

Chargers already announced they have moved on from Rivers.

  37. Alanbucsfan Says:

And I’d take Jameis for $15 million

  39. Bucs Guy Says:

    Carr or Dalton. Maybe Bridgewater.

  40. Bucs Guy Says:

    No Brady.
    No Rivers.
    No Jameis.

  41. Bucs Guy Says:

    No Tannehill.
    No Cam.
    No Marriota.
    No Allen.

  42. mark2001 Says:

813…I prefer to blame two second team all pro receivers, and a former first rounder that played almost lights out the last few games last year.

You do know that laying all the blame on the rest of the team doesn’t have to be rational…don’t you?

  43. Steven007 Says:

Doosh, that’s funny. You forgot the “anywho” though.

  44. T REX Says:

I knew Stanley was ab FSUcks fan.

  45. Thisisouryear!!! Says:

All the Jameis supporters are frustrating. Do you realize Fitzpatrick has a better rating than Jameis 2 years in a row. How on earth do you think he’s worth the money let alone causing us the pain of another wasted season. Grab Rivers dalton or Stafford and let’s talk about playing in the super bowl next year.

  46. Tbbucs3 Says:

Let’s just not have a QB next year

  47. TexBuc Says:

Do you realize Fitzpatrick is playing for his 8th team. That is a lot of coaches and GM’s that have decided they could move on from Fitzpatrick.

  48. Thisisouryear!!! Says:

I totally get that yet Fitz is playing better than Jameis. We need to move on.

  49. BucEmUp Says:

    BUCBIY EXACTLY!!!!!!

These fools done realise he finished the season with a really good record once the defense stepped up.Fix the run game, retain the defense and get Matt Gay dialed.in a little more (or sign a new kicker) its a no brainer!!!

  50. stpetebucsfan Says:

    @TexBuc

I do not know how our QB conundrum gets sorted out. I do believe however that you posted the most significant sentence of all.

“I believe the Glazers will cast the deciding vote.”

  51. Tom in Madcity Says:

    Joe,

Quit complaining about One Buc Palace going dark. If I were a decision maker in One Buc Palace, I would go dark too. Why tip your hand if you don’t have to. It keeps everyone guessing and keeps all of your options open. I am sure that they have made their decision on Jameis. But it remains in the organization’s best interest to keep it to themselves, even as fans like me clamour to know who is expected to line up under center come September. Not knowing the decision now isn’t going to diminish my interest.

  52. TexBuc Says:

    street

I just believe these Glazers like high flying offense that is why they fired Dunghy for not wanting to open up the offense, and fired Gruden for his relentless pursuit of older vet QB’s and his dislike of rookie QB’s.

  53. TexBuc Says:

    not street but stpete

  54. Defense Rules Says:

Bonzai … Yours is the only analysis that really makes any sense to me. It all comes down to ALTERNATIVES, and right now most of our alternatives are quite frankly not as good as Jameis. The ONLY one that I’d personally opt for is Derek Carr, but almost certainly that’d have to be done via a trade (Raiders would be stupid to release a $20 mil veteran QB weeks or months BEFORE they have their own ALTERNATIVE in-place).

Like you said Bonzai … “Winston will be our QB this year”, more than likely. There are really only a couple of viable scenarios where that doesn’t happen IMO: (1) we tag Jameis & he sits out (highly unlikely); (2) we grab what BA feels is a better QB & let Jameis hit FA or we trade him after tagging him. I just can’t see any scenarios where we give Jameis a long-term contract; doesn’t matter for how much.

Assuming that plays out (ie, that Jameis is our 2020 QB on a tag), can we expect him to improve? I can’t imagine him NOT improving. IF BA & JL do their jobs in getting the right players on the roster, our defense SHOULD improve. Our OLine SHOULD improve. Our running game SHOULD improve. And since this is now BL’s 2nd year as OC, our play designs, game planning & play-calling SHOULD all improve as well. Jameis’ handlers now know his weaknesses, and IF they re-sign him for another year, that should mean they have a pretty good idea how to mitigate those weaknesses.

In 2019 IF Jameis had been able to keep his INTs to his historic 15 INT average, we’d have had a positive Turnover Differential and likely ended up with about a 10-6 or even 11-5 record. With the OTHER improvements that we SHOULD expect to see this year, getting down to 15 INTs SHOULD be sufficient for us to make the playoffs. Once invited to the dance, anything can happen.

  55. JimmyJack Says:

BucEmUp…….The finish to the season was encouraging for sure. But Winston really wasn’t. His best game I remember was when he came back against the Colts and won despite 4 INTs.

The last two games were big tests and Winston was a major letdown. Them two games didn’t give much confidence that Winston could get is a playoff victory which is the goal.

  56. Thisisouryear!!! Says:

I sure hope not. I’ve stomached enough.

  57. ruggyup Says:

I tend to agree with Rule about Derek Carter after a solid study of Jacoby Brissett.

  58. SteveK Says:

    Rod Munch,

If Rivers has 2/3 the INTs of Jameis, or 10 less in total, then how was rivers “twice” as bad?

In fact, Jameis threw 49 interceptable balls last year. If Rivers was twice as bad he’d have thrown 98. Doubt it.

  59. Bird Says:

Its funny how tough butt munch talks on here

Tells people to walk off st pete bridge or get the ebola virus
    And calls people idiots
    And uses anywho

Lets be honest …butt munch is truly a butt munch
About as tough as a gummy bear
Don’t disagree with him or you will get a mean post back.
    Lol

  60. Bird Says:

Personally rivers is getting to that age where you have to wonder whats left in that shoulder

Not every qb can be brees or brady and play well into 40’s
With that said. Obviously rivers had an off year last year. But look at the 6 years before and compare to jameis 5 years :

    Jameis :
    2015 – 4042 yds 22tds. 15 ints.
    2016 – 4090 yds. 28tds. 18 ints
    2017 – 3504 yds. 19tds. 11 ints
    2018 – 2992 yds. 19tds. 15 ints
    2019 – 5109 yds. 33tds. 30 ints

Jameis season shortened in 2017 And 2018 due to injury and suspension so averages different

    ——

    Rivers :
    2013 – 4478 yds 32 tds. 11 ints
    2014 – 4286 yds. 31 tds. 18 ints
    2015 – 4792 yds. 29 tds. 13 ints
    2016 – 4386 yds. 33 tds. 21 ints
    2017 – 4514 yds. 28 tds. 10 ints
    2018 – 4308 yds. 32 tds. 12 ints

So averages around 4500 30 tds and 14 ints a year
2 to 1 td to int average
    123 and 101 record.

  63. BrianBucs Says:

    Joe

One Buc has gone dark because they aren’t sure what they are going to do.
Bucs are waiting to see who becomes available during free agency and who re- ups with their present teams. You can bet they are examining every option and scenario as they should .
When they have something to tell us, they will tell us.

  64. DoooshLaRue Says:

    Ndildo

    Slurp, slurp, gag…. slurp.

  65. John F Says:

To many including 813bucboi who constantly go to the college well to highlight Jameis’ turnover problem, the guy had 40 TD’s & only 10 picks his first year. His 2nd year, he has lost his top 6 receivers & was working w/ a young & inexperienced receiving group where many of his picks were due to wrong/poor route running. So, college wasn’t a problem. And looking at this past season, there were a few articles recently written that broke down all of Jameis’ picks, with 17-20 being his fault. So, do you take a 5100 yard 30 TD/17 Int 25 year old guy w/ his best football in front of him, or an old QB whose best years are behind him?

  66. Thisisouryear!!! Says:

Jameis has a 1.35 td to int ratio career wise. The highest he’s ever had is 1.7 for the season. I don’t think that’s going away. Realistically the most you can hope for from Jameis is a 1.5 ratio. In my mind that doesn’t cut it. It really is time to move on. He is not worth the franchise tag and he’s not worth the transition tag. It takes away from other players we can put on the field.

  67. Ndog Says:

Ah there’s Doosh again proving absolutely zero value to the conversation. Just like always, useless and CLUELESS.

  68. Bucemup Says:

Hey Glazers just write in the new contract that every pick that Jameis throws at home constituents a round of beers to the fans on him. Is fans can drink our sorrows away and maybe just maybe after he gets the bill after a couple of games he will then change his turnover ways. Mugs up fans! Cheers to JW 🍺

  69. D1 Says:

    John F,

If winston was actually a 30TD’s /17 INT’s for 5100yds player, there’s no decision and no delays in resigning him.

But he’s not that guy, yet!

And if this (x=not his fault) factor were half as true as some believe it to be, then this is a non issue because winston would have already been offered a longterm extension. Since, that extension hasn’t happened it’s time to reject t the winston x factor as self induced fan delusion, just as the team has.

Btw, no problems at FSU ints wise! Total horses-‘”:!! Winston makes the same exact mistakes in Yr 2 as a FSU starter as He does a 5th Yr Buc.

I think it’s time to look into the very real possibility that winston has a learning disability. I’d rather investigate and discover it’s utter nonsense than go another GD year of schizophrenic ups and downs arriving at the end of season exactly where we’ve been the last few years. Is winston the guy?

I’m not going to entertain the idea that improving..xyz. ..is a legitimate remedy for Winston’s woes. The teams yes, sticking to win loss record …. But the QB
    …….lol….insanity. ..

If the team is going with winston. ……if it’s business as usual. ….don’t expect winston drastically improving. Some of course will, those who smoke crack and snort pills most likely, but most fans will pull the trigger on the first mistake winston makes.. and Ray jay Already sucks azzz to play in , imagine how bad it could get for the team.

That’s why I’m hoping that one of the millions and millions of coaches at 1 buc..just 1 say… let’s step out of the box and see if there’s anything else we can do to help winston and the team.

  70. Stanglassman Says:

John F. That’s what I said to Boi. His retort was that I was wrong and the Jameis lost in the BCS playoffs not the championship game to Oregon. He also seems to think the Bucs have been a good team and Jameis is the reason why they have been losing 4/5 years. Not sure about the other 10 years before he got here. Maybe that was his fault too somehow.

  71. BucsFIRE Says:

    No Bucs Guy.

  72. Allbuccedup Says:

Forget about all those QBs trade 1st pick and 2nd pick 2020 and 2021 and OJ Howard to Bengals for 2020 1st pick. Draft Joe Burrow use the money you save on not signing Winston, Rivers or whomever to build a defense and best offensive lineman available.

  73. BucsFIRE Says:

  79. Anonymous Says:

Right on Stanglassman. Jameis has never had a running game in any of his years in TB. The only good year of D was the year they made the playoffs & Jameis was an all pro. QB always gets the praise AND blame.

  80. Anonymous Says:

813bucboi First of all one season is not a “trend.” His 2nd season at FSU he had lost his top 6 receivers & top 2 RB’s. Many of his picks were do to wrong/poor route running. He maximized his team’s capabilities in leading them to the college playoff. Give him a running game & a decent D & then let’s see.
