Rondé Barber And His Future

February 7th, 2020

“Damn Jason, if I have to wear a coat like that, I may not want to work for a team.”

Just a few days ago, fans watched a Bucs legend on national TV as the team he built from virtually scratch was just a couple of minutes away from winning a Super Bowl.

Joe knows some Bucs fans out there double over in abdominal pain thinking John Lynch could have done the same thing with the Bucs.

Perhaps, but it is a question that will never have an answer.

Lynch bounced straight from the broadcast booth where he was an analyst for FOX Sports to the general manager’s office in San Francisco. The last time a guy did that (Matt Millen) it failed spectacularly.

Now the guy who worked alongside Lynch on his first broadcast gig is FOX Sports’ Chris Myers, who is the Bucs’ long-time television preseason voice. When Lynch quit working Bucs’ preseason games with Myers, he was succeeded by fellow Bucs legend Rondé Barber.

Last week at the Super Bowl during FOX Sports media availability at the Miami Beach Convention Center, Joe asked Myers, half-jokingly, how long it will be before Barber is running an NFL team.

Myers liked Joe’s question and it seemed from Myers that Barber has — at this point in his life — different life goals than Lynch.

JoeBucsFan: John Lynch broke into broadcasting working as your right-hand man for a while there. So how long before Ronde Barber gets a job as an NFL suit?

Chris Myers: (Laughs) I can tell you, when I worked with Rondé, teams, coaches ask him. He writes out a scouting report when we do games for the broadcast that are as good as any scouting report that teams do. I don’t think he’s interested in coaching. He could certainly do that. I think in the front office, he could go that route. And John Lynch, it doesn’t surprise me. He was always the kind of guy who was so smart and knew how to ask the right questions and improve whatever he was doing whether it was broadcasting or playing or in the front office. It wouldn’t surprise me one day if he was a part-owner or ran for [NFL] commissioner or some position if he had an interest in doing that.

Barber is a trusted member of Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht’s kitchen cabinet. The two are close and Barber often sits in on brainstorming sessions with the Bucs’ hierarchy. Sometimes it’s been a weekly thing.

But Joe found it interesting that Myers said teams have reached out to Barber to probe his interest. Apparently, the bait isn’t yet juicy enough to bite.

Of course, Myers didn’t mention who those teams were.

Ask Ronde about the JayMiss decision.

i think barber is comfortable doing what he does…..LOL…

    GO BUCS!!!!!!

  3. footballjunkie Says:

    Huh??…

  4. diggler Says:

If Lynch asked I bet he would bite. Would love to see that reunion. He could reunite with Mayhew and learn the ropes and he’s got a business degree. Barber would do well.

P.S. Why the hell don’t the Glazers hire DB55 as GM? He’d do a lot better than the guy with the Biology degree LMAO.

  5. tmaxcon Says:

No way lynch succeeds with minor league bucs franchise … there is a reason he surrounded himself with Broncos (Shanahan’s) and not dungy the clowns coaching shrub members…. lynch knows that was a fluke championship in Tampa and no way would he lower himself to associate with bucs again. He’s a bronco and 9er…. lynch tenure in Tampa was wasted by the one dimensional clown dungy

  6. tmaxcon Says:

Barber sucks on tv…. why couldn’t barber and vinceyoung55 have any success without sapp carrying them????? Let go of the underachieving laughable has beens you people look pathetic slobbering over mediocrity and 1 year wonders…. you nuthuggers are like bad spinal tap groupies….

  7. Bobby M. Says:

I find it hilarious that Lynch, who had ZERO experience in the front office, goes to the 49ers and builds a Super Bowl team in 3 yrs with a back up QB who had a half dozen games of tape….yet we sit with Licht who cant field a winner nor can he figure out what to do with the QB he drafted #1…and after all that we extend him more 5 yrs.

  8. catcard202 Says:

Ronde’ was the kind of player that beat you on SUN’s, by out working you MON-SAT.
He’s is a well respected and well connected member of the NFL community…He knows the in’s & out’s of the game.

HOF caliber human being that’s had ample time to study the entire NFL – learning how it works behind the scenes – from top to bottom of organizations…Knows all player & team tendencies.

    Why not Ronde’ ???

To me, Ronde’ Barber is the exact kind of guy an owner should target as a new NFL GM…As long as that 1st opportunity isn’t in ALT/CAR or NO…I’d celebrate that hire. If it was on of the South rivals, I’d probably mourn it just as I have Lynch’s SF successes.

No disrespect to Jason Licht intended…NFL 1st rd pick success is 50-50 at best – league wide..The ball bounces in weird ways & schit doesn’t always go as planned..Guys get hurt – egos clash – wind blows – penalties happen. Yada yada yada…There’s a 1000 different things that can go wrong & only a few teams a yr dodge the odds for a whole season.

We all know he’s trying his damnedest to flip the script on the last decade * I support him in that endeavor…But it is what it is. Just being honest about it. It’s hard not to yearn for bold moves that work out, after watching years of “Bucs beating Bucs”!?!?

  9. El Buco Realisto Says:

The “real” fans already know that the Great Rhonde Barber would be the greatest Buc’s GM just by walking thru the doors at One Buc!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Go bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  10. Rod Munch Says:

Chris Myers is such a boring douche.

  11. tmaxcon Says:

    Bobby M

Nothing surprising or hilarious about lynch’s success. once lynch was paroled from the irrelevant small market franchise in Tampa, he was exposed to a professional winning franchise in the broncos… he learned what not to do in Tampa and how to do it right in denver…. again he’s surrounded by Broncos not irreverent washed up bucs has beens that low standard groupies can’t let go of…..

  12. Buc believer Says:

Just “minutes” away from a Super Bowl win? Seems to me that when Reid and Mahomes decided to stop toying with Lynch the turncoat they whipped up on the boys from the city of brotherly love (yes I DO know what I’m saying)pretty good.

  13. Wesley Says:

Who can spot the crazy person? Give you a clue his name starts with a t. And we’re talking straight up looney.

  14. Steven007 Says:

Wesley, he is the troll du jour on the site. He is a cut-and-paste artist extraordinaire, nothing more. I used to respond to his impotent word salad but life is too short. Not saying I won’t do so again in the future though. Sometimes for sport it’s fun to play with the kids or the elderly.

Lynch believes in a pass rush. Licht doesn't. The Bucs were so horrible at rushing the passer Licht was probably feeling the breath of the Glazers down his neck to find anyone who could rush the passer and found a dumbass like Gettleman to trade away JPP.

Shaq was/is a fluke NOBODY thought he would do what he did.

How many pass rushers has Licht drafted?

John Lynch knows how to build a defense. Licht hopes for accidents.

  16. Jimmy Says:

Ian Beckles has more common sense to build a team than Licht!!!

  17. JimmyJack Says:

The only thing Beckles can build is a buffet plate at the Sizzler.

  18. JimmyJack Says:

In 2002 our backs were against the wall. Barber stepped up and carried the entire team on his back. He single handily carried this team to our Super Bowl on that one play.

I don’t care what he does or how he does it the rest of his life. Dude earned everloving respect from every true Buc fan. He put the glory in our glory years!!!!

    GO BUCS!!!

  19. Brandon Says:

So funny that TMax constantly berates the Bucs and how lucky they were and how they all sucked but cand stay away from this site and has to constantly comment… it’s like he’s obsessed.

It’s like with Trump, the only people more obsessed with Trump than Trumpers are anti-Trumpers, the most delusional, hateful, and loud group of people on the internet… stupid too. That’s you except your the Bucs version of an anti-Trumper.

  20. ir8oldman Says:

That would make him TmaxLib.. right? Super Troll.

  21. ir8oldman Says:

That would make his name be TmaxLib.. the Super Troll!

  22. bucsince79 aka bumaneer Says:

Tmax how dare you insult #20… You have zero game,,,

  23. 1sparkybuc Says:

TMax definitely treats the Bucs like Trump treats America. Too bad we can’t vote Tmax out in November.

  24. jmarkbuc Says:

How in the Heck is Lynch a turncoat? Believer you got some issues, Lynch was unceremoniously dumped by the Bucs, he shouldn’t have sought other employment?

    Some people….
