Five Things

December 9th, 2019

O.J. Howard and Justin Watson sky to celebrate Watson’s first career touchdown as Breshad Perriman and Jameis Winston look on.

Welcome to a beautiful Victory Monday. Let’s keep celebrating, shall we?

To Joe, unless Mr. Entertainment, America’s Quarterback Jameis Winston, lays three complete rotten eggs in the final three games of the 2019 season, Jameis will stay with the Bucs for 2020.

He just about sealed the deal yesterday with his beautiful come-from-behind win over the Colts.

Jameis is on pace to hit 5,064 yards passing. The 5,000-yard mark has only been reached 11 times in NFL history. And if Jameis reaches this mark or even finishes the season with the most passing yards, how do you justify getting rid of the guy?

You can’t, especially if this team is winning.

The Bucs have a shot to finish the second half of the season 7-1. More realistic, the Bucs have a very good chance of finishing the second half with a 6-2 mark.

So if the Bucs are winning with Jameis, and he’s putting up league-leading numbers, well, if that’s not what you want your quarterback to do, then Joe has no earthly idea what people are looking for in a QB. That is unless these same folks played in a single-wing in high school and seeing a quarterback rack up passing yards is so foreign and uncomfortable to them that it makes their anus itch.

Talent finally showing?

After the game, Joe had a short chat with a Bucs employee in the football wing of One Buc Palace, a guy who is neither a coach nor a player (or an owner).

The employee mentioned something that made Joe think. He told Joe, partially in amazement, that the way the Bucs played yesterday showed him maybe the team is deeper than anyone aside from the coaches first thought.

The guy made a few interesting points:

* What team loses perhaps the best receiver in the NFL, for a time loses its starting quarterback, for a time loses its starting left tackle, gives up four turnovers and still puts up 38 points against a playoff team from the previous season still fighting for a wild card spot?

That is pretty freaking impressive.

* The Bucs employee also noted the depth extends to all the offensive skill positions.

This is also possibly true. Justin Watson was so far back in Bucs coach Bucco Bruce Arians’ doghouse he was locked in a broom closet. And most everyone but Arians wanted the team to unload Perriman to acquire a fourth-round compensatory draft pick (which the Bucs have demonstrated over and over again is just about a Hail Mary pick).

Two years ago former Bucs coach Dirk Koetter said the Bucs had the most talent of any Bucs team he had worked with. The Bucs then proceed to win 10 games in the next two years.

Then last year Father Dungy said there was no doubt in his mind the Bucs had the talent to be a playoff team.

Then earlier this year, Arians said the Bucs talent would not be a problem.

Could it be yesterday, for perhaps the first time, that deep talent so many boasted about finally showed up?

Test in Motown.

So we will see how skilled of a game-planner Bucs offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich is starting this week.

The Bucs, from the way Arians talked, may not have Evans back until the season finale hosting the Dixie Chicks. If he is ready by then.

So don’t think Matt Patricia and the Lions will double team Chris Godwin on each and every play? Now Leftwich is going to have to find a way to scheme open Godwin, and just as importantly, get tight end O.J. Howard worked into the offense. And not as a bit part.

Also, it would help if Leftwich is also able to find ways to get Perriman and Watson open.

This coming game against the Lions will be Leftwich’s first game-planning study without Evans. Can he pull it off?

Finances.

Joe will just let readers chew on this awhile.

Shaq Barrett had half a sack yesterday. He still leads the NFL in sacks, now with 15. Barrett is two sacks away from setting a new franchise record. Warren Sapp currently has the record with 16.5.

Joe was talking with a math guy yesterday after the game who thought perhaps the Bucs would be smarter (and cheaper) to franchise Barrett rather than franchising Jameis, though both need to be kept?

Redemption.

Joe has been pretty hard on this Dare Ogunbowale, a running back for the Bucs, because, honestly, Joe doesn’t know why he is on the roster. He seems to make more mistakes than highlights.

When he fumbled a pass from Mr. Entertainment, America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, in Bucs’ real estate yesterday, Joe was incensed.

The fact Ogunbowale has nearly as many snaps as Ronald Jones just blows Joe’s mind.

But Joe also has to be fair. And Joe is giving kudos here. If not for Ogunbowale catching a pass late in the game, the Bucs likely lose yesterday.

The Bucs were marching with under five minutes left down 35-31. The Bucs had a fourth-and-two at the Colts-16. There, he caught a short four-yard pass from Jameis over the middle.

Clutch.

On the next play, Jameis hit Perriman for the winning touchdown. This touchdown never happens if Ogunbowale doesn’t get that must-have catch.

So as upset as Joe was at Ogunbowale for the fumble, he more than made up for it later when the Bucs needed a play to stay alive.

M&Mer

(Joe is throwing an extra item in here because Joe is in a good mood on this Victory Monday.)

Joe spotted one of the biggest mismatches ever seen on a football field. Maybe the biggest. And it happened on the Colts first touchdown of the game.

When glorified backup Jacoby Brissett threw to Marcus Johnson for a 46-yard touchdown to go up 7-0, the Bucs tried a blitz. Specifically, Bucs defensive coordinator Todd Bowles had the brainstorm to blitz Jordan Whitehead through the three-hole.

And who patrols the three-hole for the Colts?

Quenton Nelson.

Of course, Whitehead was stonewalled and looked like a Pee Wee football player facing a high school player. He looked absolutely tiny compared to Nelson, who is 6-5, 330.

And someone getting paid six- (seven?) figures thought this blitz that would work? Seriously? What, did one of the defensive coaches think by blitzing Whitehead against Nelson that the behemoth Colts left guard would fall down laughing and let Whitehead slip by?

For whatever it is worth, Nelson and Whitehead talked with each other quite a while as both walked down the field to get ready for the point-after conversion and then shook hands.

Watch it Jordan! The nerve you have as a defensive player to display sportsmanship on the field. Last Bucs player who did that got run out of town by fans.

Trivia: Per jet-flyin’, kiss–stealin‘, data-analyzin’, Bucs-film-studyin’, limousine-ridin’ Thomas Bassinger of the Tampa Bay Times, Jameis has thrown picks on Bucs’ opening drives four times this year. The Bucs’ record when he throws a pick this season on the first possession? The Bucs are 3-1.

jamies is the savior… at least he tries to score every damn play after we had the one dimensional clown dungy who was afraid to score anytime. I’ll take jameis and his trying to win philosophy over the failed coaching scared afraid to score philosophy of dungy the clown.

Todd Bowles is a bona fide defensive genius.

The few morons that suggested trading Evans for draft picks need to really watch the these last 3 games with Godwin as our new #1 WR. What is better than having a legit #1 WR? Having 2 of them.

His beautiful come from behind victory that he created. Three interceptions, one a pick six, thank you Jameis for saving us from YOU!

  10. Runnerdoc Says:

And thank you, Jameis, for saving us from an organization, management, coaches, poor running game, poor defense and poor kicking, that until this year, tried to fail you.

Don’t stop now. Improve your decision making. Lower the INTs.

    The world is watching.

  11. ClodHopper Says:

My opinion is the pass rush is more important than wideouts. The biggest change in our “winning streak” is the defense played better. Not even great. Just not awful. I think Evans or Godwin is expendable (if needed) in order to pay the pass rushers. Licht has found more and better pass catchers than pass rushers so it’s best to keep what he has trouble finding and depart with what he excels at finding. It helps that Perriman is getting better by the week. It’ll be very interesting to see how this works out the next few weeks.

Also just sit Evans for the year. It’s pointless to rush him back. Unless his hammy is not as bad as we all think it is.

  12. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

Jameis is absolutely staying with the Bucs, one way or the other.
Either we franchise tag him, or sign him to a long term contract, he is staying.
    Get used to it

  13. H8JWLVEBUCS Says:

5 season under JW and still no playoffs, guys you have to understand even if we made it to the playoffs this season its a different caliber of play in the playoffs you cant throw ints and get beat down field and think you can win. Playoff teams will not be like the Colts, every possession count big time. I love my Bucs but I honestly feel JW is not going to ever take us to the promise land (Super Bowl) He can throw a million passing yard it really doesnt matter if its all for not. I hear yea I hear yea next year will be better well how many time have we said that. I just look at these quick turnaround QBS (Lamar Jackson,Patrick Mahomes ect.) in the NFL and dont see that in JW. Call me a hater(funny) but Im a realist.

  14. H8JWLVEBUCS Says:

    @Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa

Thats the problem we get use to it (no playoffs and losing)

  15. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Well..it already looks like Leftwich has found a way to use Perriman, Watson & OJ…..it was in the second half yesterday.

We need a couple (at least) Olinemen early in the draft…..

    H8JWLVEBUCS

your tunnlevision of hatred focused on jameis is pretty hilarious… i respect it.

jameis is a victim of an incompetent franchise who has surrounded him with some of the worst defensive units in nfl history. In addition, the savior has never had a single nfl caliber offensive lineman playing in front of him. It’s a disgrace the glazers set jameis up to fail…. Jameis is the future regardless of your ignorance. jameis is real unlike those dungy the clown hypocrite clowns you fools can’t let go of….

  17. Jimbuc2 Says:

That Whitehead\Nelson encounter reminds me of another one. Stinking Panthers legend Julius Peppers was not hindered in the least by a chip block from Peyton Barber, in point of fact he seemed amused. After the play was over Pepper leaned over, smiled and delivered a friendly elbow jostle to Barber. The camera caught everything and clearly showed that Peppers appreciated the audacity of a little guy trying his best.

  21. #1bucfan Says:

I was so frustrated wen Winston thru the ball directly to the other team is 1st one of the game an then I had to ask my self why are you up set? Did I expect something different ? Lol he’s going to throw picks anyone is wen you throw the ball 40 plus times again yea the turnovers are maddening but he comes back an plays lights out. Someone tell him if he just cuts those turnovers in half we are going to the playoffs as long as the DEFENSE plays average. Now will this kind of play work in the playoffs I don’t think so but we are in uncharted waters here. Gotta make the playoffs first to find out. I’d say keep WINSTON for one more year. Put in his contract that he looses a million for ever int he throws maybe that helps haha

  22. TOM Says:

Like always the Bucs do just enough to give fans hope for next year. Keep in mind how bad the Colts, Jags & Falcons are, And they barely beat the Cards. They should beat the Lions (another bad team) this week but the real test will be the Texans. Will probably finish the season 8-8

  23. 813bucboi Says:

    he’ll do just fine…..

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  24. “That guy” Says:

I’m not a Jameis supporter, but if he keeps racking up wins, and finishes the season 9-7, i say he should be re-signed. To be fair the pick 6 was a great play from that linebacker and would have got 90% of the quarterbacks in this league. I predicted 9-7 at the start of the season, as did most commenters, so I don’t know why everyone is crying about the current record.

Side note: the defensive line MUST be resigned to keep this progression going.

  26. Rick Says:

Winning is great, closing in on 5k is great but that doesn’t translate to wins. Brady is the goat, but he’s only thrown over 5k once in his career and he still only threw 12 INTs that year. Every other year were low to mid 4’s. My point is, yards don’t equal wins. Are we as fans satisfied with stats or are we looking for consistency and playoff wins? I love a good roller coaster myself but I don’t think paying 20 million for excitement is worth it. Jameis is lighting all the stats up, including the turnover stat line. The Bucs are an 8-8 with Jameis under center. But let’s enjoy the 5k, try to ignore the 20(and counting)turnovers.

  27. Fb Says:

I believe this is joe(Lee’s) article as it has all the America’s Jameis lovin and McCoy jock sniffing you can find in a single article. You always seem to pull the stats to make your case. Jameis threw for a ton of yards in the equivalent of steroid baseball stat era for the nfl charmin league. But name a team who throws that many picks and including an 8 yard pick six that can win you three playoff games in a row? We all know Jameis great is great, but the rest is crap or below average, and looking at is record, that isn’t enough. I agree with keep you till I can replace you, but at the moment Jameis is about fourth on my list of must replace free agents. So what is he worth? Can’t wait till I have time to listen to ira argue with you on the podcast. Joe (Steve), you should start matching articles in a he said she said format so we get the big picture take, which you always seem to be better at.

  29. Defense Rules Says:

Clodhopper … I agree 100% that the Bucs DEFENSE has led the charge on this “winning streak”. Our young Secondary is playing a lot better and gaining confidence. IMO that’s largely because our DLine has been doing a much better job of getting pressure on opposing QBs. UNTIL YESTERDAY. Brissett has way too much time to throw

  30. Bucs Fan Since ‘76 Says:

    Here’s a couple more things:

Name calling is not interesting. It’s petty and childish and adds nothing to the conversation.

If Arians believes he can choke the bad TO’s out of Jameis in the offseason, then the kid will get an extension. He’s an elite thrower.

The Bucs need to add an elite RB. If OSU’s Dobbins is available when the Bucs pick, then they should take him. He’s fast, powerful, a good receiver, and an accomplished pass blocker. In other words, he’s an every down back. Adding real balance to the Offense will help Jameis reduce TO’s, especially early in the game.

Sign Barrett, and keep Suh and JPP. We have an elite run defense because of those two, David, and White.

Keep the current secondary intact. Our senior DB is 23! The bad plays yesterday were the result of poor communications. The young guys need to stay in the Bay Area during the off-season and be at OB studying film and working with their position coaches every day the CBA permits. The kids are fast, and are often in position to make a play. Better technique will help turn the close catches and passes defensed into much needed TO’s.

An explosive running game, great run defense, consistent pass rush and improved secondary play will go a long way to reducing Jameis’s TO’s.

Remember this too – if Gay makes the chip shot FG against the Giants then the Bucs are 7-6 right now. If the NFL doesn’t hand us one of the most ridiculous schedules in League history, then we are likely 8-5.

We are closer to legitimacy then many think. Go Bucs!

  31. miken Says:

Great game by Jameis. A lot og games like this he will throw 3 or 4 picks and LordCorn and crew will come on and say will this was the wrs fault and this was the backs fault ect ect. And the truth is #3 would have had 3 more balls that could have been picked and 3 or 4 bad misses, but this game, the 3 picks were bad but he really didn’t have any other bad throws and the ones that were a little off, the wrs made great catches. Great game by #3 and perriman, who should have been cut a month ago has had like 3 solid games in a row… wow! Starting to believe in the Arians Magic. I wish we had the saints one more time to see if all this is 100%. The lions are done, the jags and colts are done, the texans look bad. Of course, in typical Buc fashion… the day of our best win, we are eliminated. #bucslife

  32. Eli Says:

I just dont understand how you justify keeping Jameis longterm. 5 years and he has shown the same thing over and over. Yes, he’s talented, yes he makes big plays but the amount of dumb plays he makes nullifys all the good. 26 TDS and 23 INT? I mean you cant have a consistent winning team like that. Look at Russell Wilson, 26 TD 5 INT. Doesnt matter how good your defense is if you give away an average of 2-3 turnovers every game. Yesterdays game would have been lost if it was any better team. Yes, you can make the case for bad running back play, or the offensive line not being top notch, or bad routes but that is no excuse for the lousy plays Winston makes. Out of the 26 interceptions atleast 18 are his fault. Love to see the bucs win and Winston is exciting but he’s not going to get us to the playoffs repeatedly like other quarterbacks do.

  33. AwShbucs Says:

Rick. No. Bucs are an 8-8 with Jameis and a defense that was awful for most of the year.

With an average defense we’re a wild card team. With a good defense we’re contenders.

  34. Alanbucsfan Says:

The Jameis offensive explosion/turnover act will work against below .500 teams (Cardinals, Jaguars, Falcons, Colts) with so-so Defenses.

It will Not work against teams with solid Defenses ( Saints, 49ers, Titans )

Jameis is fun to watch and worth another year to see if he can cut turnovers some- but a long term investment? Tough decision- if you do that, you better invest in Defense and O Line.

  35. Ed Says:

I posted earlier that every single 10 team win this year has quarterbacks with less than 10 interceptions except New England. Wilson, Roger and Cousins all have less than 5!. Just think where the Bucs would be if Winston had between 8-10 interceptions, they certainly would have a couple of more wins and be in the hunt for wildcard. The yardage thing makes for good entertainment but the wins feel much better. The ugly win over the Panthers on national TV when the Bucs were playing meaningful game was more important than scoring a bunch of points and beating Indy yesterday.

I cannot argue Winston’s tenacity to fight back but why is he making bad throws to start a game. He’s always dug the team in the hole. I have to agree with all the “general managers’ that post on Joe Bucs about salary cap and how you can pay all of the star players without having depth at all positions.

Its looking more like Winston has a short term future here, specifically if they keep winning. Its hard to let him walk if he can win 7 out of 8 games, even if most of them are against non-playoff teams.

The argument really is how do you bridge him to a cap friendly contract that gives you flexibility to move on if there is no playoffs in 2020?

The Ravens and Chiefs and Texans are all in great positions, they have young QB’s that aren’t taking up a huge amount of their salary caps. The Bucs are not in that situation, it will be very challenging ot come up with the correct strategy to the Winston problem.

  37. thisisouryear!! Says:

I don’t like Jameis, but I’m seeing some changes lately. He’s starting to hit players in stride for the first time in his career. He’s not throwing the ball up for grab and making the receivers go get it. I’m wondering if the coaching is starting to make a difference. If it is, he may have been playing with too many thoughts going through his head (like I do with my golf swing), but as he gets comfortable with the other issues, I think the turnovers may go down.

Go Bucs!!! It would be so nice to win out!!! 9-7.

  38. Miller5252 Says:

I just wonder when the last time a QB that led the league in passing won a Super Bowl? Or when the QB who led the league in turnovers won a Super Bowl?

When you look at the top 10 passing leaders this year you have 3 that are in the playoffs. Brady, Dax, and Rodgers. All three if they make the playoffs won’t be going very far. I get ya Joe that Winston is throwing for all these yards and is having a career year…. but I also get that his turnovers sunk our ship pretty early in the year and we haven’t played a good team in 4 weeks. The Colts played good football in the first part of the year, but anyone watching yesterday knows they’re not a playoff team. When you have the holes in Tampa that we do I just don’t see how you can Winston and fix everything else. I think you can find a QB that might not throw as many yards as Winston but won’t have as many turnovers as well which allows for making the D a great unit.

Last 10 years in the Super Bowl how many games were won because of good offensive teams and how many were won because of good defensive teams?

  39. orlbucfan Says:

    —————————
Typical Cardiac Bucs, Joes. No reason why they can’t finish 9-7. Defense and Special Teams are improving. BA/BL will have to throw more to the TEs with ME13 out. It’s ABOUT TIME, too!! You guys don’t care for Dare O, a rookie, BTW. I like him and have since the preseason. His mistakes are rookie mistakes. BA sure likes him. Otherwise, DO would be gone.

  40. martinii Says:

I think the key is winning these next 3 games. Will take a lot of pressure off “Need,” players and allow us to focus on “Best player available.” I agree that Oline and RB are priorities, but if this team can put together 7 Wins, especially 4 in December we will have made huge strides going forward. Winning trumps draft picks, FA’s, and coaching. I see DB’s improving, a solid Dline, and a top 5 receiving corp in 2020. I would re-sign as many Dline as possible, give Jameis an incentive loaded 2 yr contract and if he walks so be it. There are plenty of Brad Johnson types to fill his shoes. With his interceptions and W/L record don’t expect a long line of QB needy teams ready to shell out big contracts. Sure he has a lot of yards, he plays from behind most of the time and has a great receiving corp. No playoffs this year but 2020 should be fun.

  42. Craig Says:

The Bucs would not have had to climb out of a hole if Jameis didn’t dig it first. The two things that most struck me from yesterday were the strong and consistent pressure of our D-line kept Jacoby out of the game, for the most part.

The second thing I noted was how badly the Colts defense fell apart when just a couple of stars got injured. It wasn’t anything special about Jameis, it was the defense forgetting to cover receivers.

Franchising Barrett is a great idea, offer Jameis a ten to fifteen million one-year contract and draft a QB between the second and fourth round. Maybe he will get idea, I don’t see any other teams lining up for him.

  43. Robert Says:

they could win out the season, and i’d still say trade the bum.

he’s only decent when it doesn’t matter. and the defense is the reason for the recent wins. his amount of turnovers is ridiculous. If I lived in Tampa and it was free I might flip it on………but having to pay for it, and watch on gamepass afterwards….just too much work, and not worth the money to know he will turn it over. trade the bum or lose the fanbase for good. licht too.

He sent whitehead (our hardest hitter) on a mission to slam him as hard as can be. Old school football style. Trying to beat the guy up.

  46. jjbucfan Says:

Miken- nobody has said yesterdays INT’s were the receivers fault. At some point though, you have to give credit to the players on the other side. So 1st INT on Jameis, 2nd INT also on Jameis but due to a great play by Leonard which fooled Jameis- Good Defensive play, 3rd INT I will give to Jameis, but also chalk it up to a little bad luck. It seems as though every tipped ball by a receiver goes into the hands of defender. Not Perrimans fault, the ball was thrown behind him, but it seems when the ball is tipped it rarely finds the ground. On the other hand there were 2 tipped balls that we had that miraculously found the smallest of space to fall. Again not an excuse, bad throws yesterday but this year, this has not always been the case. When the coach says the receivers were not where they were supposed to be on timing routes, why is it that some on this sight think they know more than the guy that designed the plays themselves?

Guys (and girls)- If Gay makes a 30 yard FG we are 7-6
-If the officials don’t screw us on a play against the Titans that was supposed to be a point of emphasis for them, we are 8-5.
-We would have overcome the worst schedule in NFL history where we were not given a home game for a month and a half.
-Our games to come-Lions, a struggling Houston and the Falcons- We would be entrenched in the playoff run.

Now those are excuses- but they are also a reality, we are THAT close, don’t blow this up- we have a ton of cap space next year- we can sign everyone if address our holes in the draft- with some contract re-negotiation- we could get 1 maybe 2 Free agents as well.

  47. Bill Gootee Says:

Yards. Yards. Yards. Joe is so quick to criticize those of us who want a QB who wins yet Joe is the polar opposite. JW could go 2-14 every year and Joe would be giddy with orgasmic glee, (and taking jabs at non JW jock sniffers) as long as JW threw for 4000+ yards. Ridiculous

jjbucfan… thats my point. Usually idiots on here arguing how this pick was the recievers fault and not jw’s when there are 2 or 3 times a game when a ball should have been picked but its not. every qb has wr’s missing assignments ect. We don’t count the dropped ints as picks so we have to count the ones that are actually picked. Was saying, he played really good this game and really only had 3or4 bad throws instead of 8 to 10. If gay makes a 30 yard fg… if vh3 doesn’t make a tackle… again, goes both ways
