Connecting The Dots

January 4th, 2019

A lot of Bucs fans are hammering (former?) Bucs corner Brent Grimes this morning. Joe is not among them.

Yesterday, Joe brought Grimes’ explosive allegations about the disarray within the football wing of the Bucs organization to light (by way of his wife, Miko Grimes’ podcast). And for that, Joe thanks him.

The Bucs were terribly disorganized. Combine Grimes’ pulling back the shroud (you can read here and here) with the revelation of how disruptive DeSean Jackson was and it paints the picture of a football coaching staff that had no accountability with just downright Lovie Smith-like ineptitude.

The fact that Mike Smith, knowing what we all know now, was brought back for the 2018 season, is a slap-in-the-face to ticket-buying Bucs fans. **Joe has much more to share from Grimes**

The stats back up that former Smith was one of the worst NFL defensive coordinators in the post-AFL-NFL merger. His defensive back assistants were not much better.

Grimes’ words just confirmed it, as if Jackson’s stunts didn’t already paint an ugly picture.

Albert Breer of theMMQB.com recently wrote that Team Glazer was negotiating with Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh a year ago to come to Tampa Bay. It is quite reasonable to expect that Team Glazer knew full well about the dysfunction of its team and was looking to move on from Koetter’s hands-off leadership as early as 2017, which only buoys the rampant Chucky rumors of last season.

Connect the dots.

As Joe stated earlier, this is not a good look for Koetter if he hopes to be a head coach again. Koetter often admitted he was hands-off when it came to the defensive side of the ball, joking that he might screw things up even worse if the defense needed his help.

If anything, the defense was begging for leadership and guidance and Koetter looked the other way.

That’s what concerns me – the Glazers and GM knew about this and yet no one decided to hold anyone accountable???

This is why Tampa is the arm pit of the NFL and habitual losers. It’s not just the players, it’s the coaches and owners too.

I am so disappointed in this franchise!

    AMEN!!!

  3. TheBucsAnthem Says:

You always see this week when a crappy team had a crappy season and then crappy players dime out crappy coaches or organizations.

I personally think it is so unprofessional for these players or former members of that organizations to do so…….almost like they have an AX to grind.

    Be a professional
    Keep your mouth shut

    ……………and then move on.

  4. Mikey Says:

Passive coaches and non-teammate/non competitive players like GRIMES is certainly not a good mix. Lol

  5. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I’m convince Grimes laid down this year……why?….because they didn’t pay him enough to cover #1 receivers? Or, that is his excuse.

How can you respect any player who admittedly doesn’t perform to the best of their ability?

So, Grimes may or may not confirm Joe’s suspicion that Buc coaches are inept……as another famous loser once said “At this point, what difference does it make?”

  6. Joe Says:

That’s what concerns me – the Glazers and GM knew about this and yet no one decided to hold anyone accountable???

Pretty sure Koetter and Mike Smith are unemployed.

  7. Defense Rules Says:

Bingo Architek … NO ONE WAS ACCOUNTABLE. Past experience says that when folks aren’t happy … coaches AND players in the Bucs’ case … they can’t be counted on to give 100% all the time. And when no one holds their feet to the fire in situations like that it becomes even easier to develop the “Nobody cares, why should I?” attitude. Too many pretty quickly develop a ‘ME FIRST’ attitude in scenarios like that IMO.

I’ve got a hunch that’s what JPP, a REAL PRO IMO, was seeing in his first year here. Bucs NEED to get some quality LEADERSHIP in-place first to ‘set the right tone’, then let players go who’ve shown a propensity towards the ‘ME FIRST’ attitude, then re-stock our TEAM with more REAL PROS like JPP.

  8. Andrew Says:

Glazers are never there so they dont know anything about what’s going on with the guys cashing close to 7 figure game checks smh

  9. Jmarkbuc Says:

How does JLicht get a pass?

He’s the head of this steaming pile and somehow he still has a job?

And while it was obvious Grimes was just collecting a check all season, for him to come out and say so????????????? What a prick.

Over and over I said Dork was a substitute High School teacher, looks like that was exactly correct.

Again how did Licht let this go on and why does he still have a job?

  10. Jmarkbuc Says:

“Pretty sure Koetter and Mike Smith are unemployed.”

At least a year too late….

  11. Mikiebucsfan76 Says:

This is why I am concerned about Licht keeping his job and leading the HC search. He had to known of all this disfunction on this team and he brought back Koetter and his defensive staff for the 18 season. Not saying Licht should have been fired but I am concerned. I think there is more to this drama in Tampa.

  12. Jonathan Lipnicki Says:

F%$K that sh!t!!! As a fan I want to know what’s going on with the franchise I love and support. And this just confirms what I’ve been saying about this franchise and the Glazers for years……..that they are completely inept and clueless owners that don’t know how to build a winning franchise and organization. They’re the ones constantly making the wrong hires in the front office and on the coaching staff. It all begins and ends with the three f*$ktard Glazers.

  14. Jmarkbuc Says:

At this point house cleaning can’t cone soon enough…

I’d rather have a team of UDFA that give a damn. rather than all this “Talent”, that is just here to collect a check and check their instagram at halftime.

The list of people that need to go is long..and unfortunately JLicht is #1, but not going anywhere…..

  15. Iron Wombat Says:

Hey Joe it’s starting to look like the Glaziers would of fired Koetter last year had they been able to get the guy they wanted locked up prior to axing the staff. Like they did with Lovie and tried to do with Bill Parcels. Koetter returning this season is starting to look like plan B.

  16. Eric Says:

    The team just never gelled.

Yeah the offense moved the ball prolifically between the 20’s but they never played as a team in all 3 phases.

Found ways to lose rather than ways to win.

Pretty simple, that’s on the head coach.

How many successful head coaches completely stay out of one side of the team?

  17. AlteredEgo Says:

I am pretty sure the Glazers are second guessing themselves about firing Koetter ….should have waited another offseason draft….all we have now is more uncertainty….the 2019 season is going to be shaky with all the new parts

  18. Coburn Says:

Is it possible both have some fault in this? I’m pretty sure Grimes is right that Hoke was terrible, but it’s also not a great attitude to say I can’t cover this guu cause they don’t pay me enough. How many studs are still on rookie contracts? How many times are backups forced into action because of injury? Some of his complairs about coaches are definitely valid but take care of your own business on the field.

  19. lokog Says:

some people on here said that it all starts at the top and im starting to believe them glazer boys cant run a successful football franchise and no im not talking about soccer which is a sport for cry babies rolling around on the dirt complaining Jason should be fired for signing trash players like d.jax and brent grimes the list goes on who are cowards and talk at the end when they are gone but I get that being a bit&h runs in their blood

“A professional is someone who works like their boss is watching, even when no one is watching.” Just my two cents.

  21. NPRSageBoy Says:

All the more reason to burn this to the ground and start clean. Only proves what we already knew: the coaching sucked and both Licht and Koetter were aware of it and did nothing about it.

  22. 813bucboi Says:

    joe

when a coach is hands off when it comes to leadership and doesnt hold his staff accountable it doesnt even come close to your love with “inept lovie smith”…lol…

    its called “Dysfunctional Dirk Koetter”….

i cant wait to hear more about just how incompetent dirk was while he was here….lol…

    #REALISTKNOWSNOTHING!!!!…#ADIOSDIRK!!!!…GO BUCS!!!!

  23. The Buc Realist Says:

LOL!!!! at least joe is consistent!!!!!! Connecting the dots and coming up with the wrong conclusion!!!!!! The coaches were setup to fail!!!!!!!! Is this some sort of surprise that BG24 likes to play on one side of the field?????? We knew this when he was signed back in 2016!!!!! but that did not stop joe from attacking the DC last year for not moving BG on #1 wr!!!!!! Joe wanted sherman and he does the same thing!!!!!!!!!!

The Owners made this year a lame duck year when they left coaches hanging last year, and made this the “prove” it year when the so-called franchise qb was suspended!!!!!!!! Even joe said multiple times that this season had a dark cloud over it!!!!!!!!!!!! Hard to have discipline when the DC cannot run the scheme he wants because gmc wants a scheme that is good for him and will pout otherwise!!!!!!!!!!!

keep trying to fix and patch the problems that are still here!!!!!! And if you are not talking and scouting top QB’s for 2020 draft, then you are just wasting time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    GO Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  24. VaTom Says:

Yeah, when it comes down to it Koetters legacy is poor management of his staff of coaches. That’s a shame for a dude who appears to have been good at a lot of aspects of being a head coach. I think he trusted other people had the same work ethic he did. And as a Manager you have to trust but verify. He didn’t do that.

  25. RTG Bucs Says:

Sorry but there were a couple of times in the final game where I saw Mikos boy in position to make a tackle and he looked at other players on the D and if they were close enough he backed off, that is inexcusable. Now he is going to spout off about the coaches and his salary? Give me a break! I do not care how crappy the team or the coaching was, by playing the way he did he disrespects himself and more importantly, his team mates. Personally, I believe that people who don’t try are just pieces of crap to begin with. Then compound not trying with running your mouth. I always thought that he just never fully recovered from his early season groin injury, boy was I wrong!

WE NEED REAL FOOTBALL PLAYERS AND A COACH TO LIGHT A FIRE UNDER THEIR A$$E$!!

  26. Dapostman Says:

I choose to see as of December 31,2018 Brent Grimes as old news and it’s time to look forward.

  27. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

I think we need to have patience on this whole coaching search. Something tells me they already have their guy on board and are working out the kinks, getting their coordinators/assistants on board, etc. I’d be shocked if this thing wasn’t finalized by Monday.

  28. SC Bucs Fan Says:

Just because Miko gave Joe tons of fodder for articles doesn’t give Grimes leeway for a bad year

  29. Mikiebucsfan76 Says:

You know its staring to look more and more that the Glazer boys are becoming bad owners. They are starting to remind me of Daniel S in Washington, Detroit ownership and the new Browns ownership. It seems that they just don’t know what the hell they are doing as owners of an NFL franchise, year after year of bad coaching hires and personal moves. It does seams that the Brown have figured it out. I think the Glazer boy miss their father

  30. doolnutts Says:

We will see what happens this offseason but I have been saying this since the start. It isn’t just the coaching… We need to clean ou the locker roomer… See JPP’s comments we have some two-faced nonsense going on. Regardless of what coach is here they will be doomed if we don’t clean up the locker room.

  31. JGhoti86 Says:

    Joe

I agree with everything you state and your reasoning backs it up. One issue though…

You’re making this out to be a one side is wrong/one side is right. Having to pick only one side for who deserves the “hammering”. Your 1st paragraph implies that. They are all to be blamed for this pathetic-ness. Grimes deserves to be “hammered” for this, as does everything/everyone you state in your article.

This is not a pick one side only blame game though. And again, it’s pathetic to be honest!

  32. 813bucboi Says:

    REALIST

the only thing your consistent about is not holding this staff accountable!!!!!!!….and you got it wrong yet again!!!!!…..the players were set up to fail the moment the glazers decided to bring dirk and his incompetent staff back for another 5-11 season!!!!!!

the owners rightfully made this year a “prove it year” since they regressed in 2017!!!!!….you and many others(bonzai) made every excuse in the book for this staff but they finally ran out of them and the glazers as well as the “real fans” have seen enough!!!!!!!!

winston’s situation doesnt make a difference because we went 2-1 while he was out!!!!!!!…..this season had a dark cloud over it because this lousy incompetent staff returned to have a repeat performance!!!!!!!!

its hard for players to have confidence in a scheme that they just played in that proved to be predictable and outdated!!!!!!

luckily, no more time will be wasted because this incompetent coaching staff is now packing their U-HAULS!!!!!!!!!!

when are you going to pull your skirt down and hold this staff accountable?…..TIME 4 YOU 2 EAT CROW!!!!!!!!

dirk was in over his head and unqualified to be an HC!!!!!!!!

Hopefully Team Glazer does us all the service of obtaining JOHN Harbaugh.

Place will be ship-shape in no time.

  37. JGhoti86 Says:

When referring to Grimes specifically, you wouldn’t have to even hold him accountable if he didn’t act like this in the first place. It all goes hand in hand.

Completely agree. Joe, I am wondering if you have rose colored glasses regarding Grimes since it’s obvious you have a good relationship with him. You probably have received some inside information from him a time or two as well. However, not wanting to step up to help the team when injuries press the #2 Cornerback to step up and cover their opponents #1 receiver is appalling. You are supposed to be a professional athlete and a veteran. In addition making the excuse of being on your cell phone because other players are is an excuse, not a valid reason as someone who should be looked upon as a leader. Grimes was injured this season, no doubt, but it also seems like he mailed it in on his last season with the Bucs.

  41. Lord Cornelius Says:

    @Defense Rules

I think the issue is we don’t know WHO pushed what buttons in terms of personnel decisions and who should be accountable for each issue.

If 100% was Licht then yeah don’t let the door hit you the way out. Only the Glazers know.

That’s why I’ve made like 5 posts on the “I hope” concept of what decisions were made by whom.

We know Lovie verbally chastised the O-line he inhereted for example.
We know Lovie perferred scheme fits over adapting scheme to player.
We know Lovie loved having a Matt Forte type back.

    So dumping Zutah & Penn
    drafting Sims
    dumping Revis/Barron and signing Verner/Ghost

    All reeked of Lovie.

We know Mike Smith loved Grimes.
We now know the coaches were the one’s who asked him to start shadowing other teams #1 WRs when that’s not ever been what the guy does well.
We know Mike Smith loved midget CBs like Grimes and playing soft zone.

VHIII/MJ Stewart sure smell like MS corners.

Koetter seemed to have a huge influence on the RB personnel. He was why we retained Martin after a down year. He started Martin over better RBs and in Atlanta he started Steven jackson over better RBs (Freeman/Coleman).

Biggest struggles that have kept us from winning the last 2 years?
    1. Worst secondary in the league most of that stretch
    2. Bottom 5 run game impacting red zone efficiency/scoring efficiency

I’m sure Licht sh1t the bed himself on a few picks / FA that had nothing to do with the rest of the staff. But in the end we don’t know who was pulling the trigger and whose vision was influencing those decisions.

I pray that the Aguayo decision was a Glazer push… for Licht’s sake. ANd for the Glazers sake – if that’s true – stay the f*ck out of our draft please lol.

Let’s see when Grimes left Miami he burned that bridge.

Now he’s leaving another city and having another public outcry.

Wonder if he did the same thing in Atlanta?

Forget connected any dots. I’m looking at the pattern.

He may also bitee with complain about how he is taught to tackle. The tackle me missed on Monday Night was 100% on him. What does this guy think we don’t remember? What a big ole baby he is being.
Between that missed tackle and Conte’s career ending stiff arm that was the turning point in the season IMO.

Grimes embarrassed his city this year.

  45. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    “…the dysfunction of its team…”

Wow. It appears as if Joe is trying to remain friends with Miko and Brent.

Tell me…what dysfunction are you talking about? Djax? Apparently Grimes? That;s all I’ve heard about.

Tell me also…is it possible JPP was talking about Grimes in his recent comments? Sure sounds like it.

Is Joe #2 trying to find justification for all the negativity he heaped on us this year? Beats me.

I hope they read this too…when I point out that VdubVW has been invisible until this post, so is likely a troll.

  49. Not there yet Says:

It gives hope to know that the Glazers simply couldn’t find the right guy last year and that’s the only reason Koetter was back. If this is true then yea I can see how the bucs started their search somewhere around the bengals or giants game. Koetter is just not a good HEAD coach and he compounded the problem by hiring assistants just as bad as him

  50. stpetebucsfan Says:

    Tickdr

As always I agree with you. Imagine you did a cardiac cath and diagnosed three blockages than needed stents and the guy didn’t have all the money. Hey I’ll repair one of them because that’s all you can afford.

The obsession with MONEY on this blog frequently becomes fatiguing. Have none of you ever done a job that you loved?

I worked one year from January 1st until St. Patricks Day without a single day off…I did 6-11 sportscasts M-F…Saturday nights and Tuesday nights I did play by play of the ETSU basketball games and on Sunday I hosted the Coaches show.

At no point did I ever consider whining about it nor griping about how many hours or how hard I worked. I LOVED my job!!
It took me ten years to get to that point where I could do PBP and anchor the sportscasts.

At no point in my life have I ever considered deliberately not giving my best. My main motivation was PRIDE!!! I wanted to be the best I could be regardless of pay or work conditions. If I felt so abused by my employer I didn’t quit putting in the effort…I quit the job. Nobody forced Grimes to sign with the Bucs. If he hated it that much QUIT the team…resign whatever but don’t steal money, don’t cheat hard working folks who pay their money to watch the privileged Grimes fake it out there.

Grimes is nothing more than a very expensive whre with zero REAL pride in his performance. SHAME on him!!!!

  51. Bobby M. Says:

There’s blame to go everywhere….It didn’t work out for Koetter….It hasn’t worked out for the last 5 coaches, I don’t view Koetter as the issue. The “culture” at One Buc is built with a focus on profits first….winning second. There’s dysfunction that reaches all the way to the top and it stems from a very simple reality. The Glazers are not “football guys”….they are business men, which is very common in team ownership however what stands out with them is the decision making structure. You have essentially 4 voices providing input on the management of the team and when you do, you end up with a collection of visions/ideas trying to be meshed together to satisfy everyone vs create the best product. The really good teams….all seem to have a much more simple structure at the top. That simplified structure leads to less hands in the cookie jar with less emphasis on maximizing profits and more focus on consistent winning. I don’t think the Bucs will ever change with all the Glazer siblings needing a cut of the pie.

  52. gotbbucs Says:

This is ridiculous to be condoning this crap and pushing it on readers.

It fits the “Joe’s” agenda from before last years draft that defensive back coaching is all to blame for everything wrong with this team.
We just heard it from the horses mouth that Grimes refused to do what coaches wanted him to do, yet he’s being paraded around as some prophet who proved Joe’s agenda true?

I’m not claiming that Hoke is some DB coaching genius, but something tells me that he isnt an idiot, he just got saddled to a horse that wouldnt go where it was supposed to.

Go find a player that is actually going to be on this team next year to get a quote from, rather than a player who’s been run out of ever team he’s played for.

This site used to be so awesome….now it’s like watching a train wreck. How on earth did they get Ira to write for them? Start your own blog site Ira and sign up some contributors that actually know football.

  53. Brandon Bob Says:

When Grimes stated guys that cover number 1 receivers all over the field get paid 13-15 million per year, I knew this team’s management needed to be replaced. If anyone knew his feelings on this and didn’t cut him on the spot, they should have been fired. Grimes accepted a contract to play ball, which means whatever he was asked to do, he should have given his best. His attitude is part of the culture change that is sorely needed here.We need coaches and management who say play hard at all times or get out!! What a loser attitude Grimes has/had. Completely spoiled. Made me sad reading about it, it really did

  54. gotbbucs Says:

The rest of the football world is condemning the guy….Joe is applauding him. Figure it out.

“(former?)”, do you really question whether the Bucs or any other team will sign him after these admission’s? Wow.

  55. Lord Cornelius Says:

    @Realist.

    1. That’s on the coaches if they want to take a guy they know likes to play zone and cover 1 side of the field; and force him into being a man roaming corner that matches up on #1 WRs. That has NEVER been Grimes forte. He’s in like his last year of his career. Joe may have wanted that but Joe isn’t the coach lol.

I have no idea how you can not take that as an indictment on the coaching staff not knowing wtf they were doing with their starting players. A starter MS was super familiar with.

    2. Now you’re blaming Smitty’s failures on an inability to run his scheme due to GMC?

    Are you kidding me dude?
Your entire hatred of Lovie was very much founded in his dependancy on scheme and lack of ability to adapt scheme to the talent he had. I know mine was.

I thought that’s WTF mike smith was supposed to do? That’s why I was high on him personally. I thought he wasn’t scheme dependant. That he puts players in position to succeed. My 4ss.

And why the hell was Gerald McCOy never an excuse for Lovie’s Scheme?

None of your stuff is adding up / consistent anymore. I love you man but we should probably all just hit reset on our schtics at this point.

Obviously had no idea about these stories before but it wasnt hard to see Klueless had no grip on the team. That’s why i wanted him out bad last year. What a waste of a season.

  62. diggler Says:

Joes are actually decent writers when not blinded or stupified by their own kool-aid 🙂

  63. Eric Says:

I dunno, players coming out and trashing fired coaching seems crass to me.

Happens every time we let one go.

  64. AlteredEgo Says:

    diggler……Bwahahahahahahaa

  65. 813bucboi Says:

    alter

    what are you talking about?….lol…

as far as skill sets, winston can make any throw that the QB’s playing this weekend can…..he had no problem hitting godwin and evans deep…..

but dont just watch the QB’s….

watch how the coaches put the QB’s in position to be successful…..
watch how these teams run the ball….
watch how these teams play defense….
    watch these teams special teams….
watch how these coaches adjust in game and after half time….

no doubt winston has to get better but dirk hasnt developed winston….combine his lack of development by coaches with a lousy defense and no run game and you have back to back 5-11 seasons….

but your right…no need to argue….he finished decent but he still has to improve….

    #REALISTKNOWSNOTHING!!!!…#ADIOSDIRK!!!!…GO BUCS!!!!

  66. Aceofaerospace Says:

It was another wasted season. Dirk should have never been allowed to bring smith back. He got what he deserved. We, however, deserved better.

  67. passthebuc Says:

What the hell is the GM for if not to ensure a smooth running of operations?

  68. Jerry Jones Says:

Okay, he didnt get paid what he wanted..BUT HE SURE TOOK IT. Is Grimes not responsible for accepting it? Now he’s crying about it when the time to bitch and moan was during contract time.

  69. tnew Says:

Grimes maybe saying 100% the truth about the staff. They seemed totally inept to me at the end of last season and seem more so now. However, this doesn’t free him from his share of responsibility. If the team asks the #1 CB to play the #1 receiver then he should. Heck, I would WANT to prove that I could chase the #1 receiver around the field. We all threw Ryan Smith under the bus last season for the Julio Jones debacle in ATL. Sounds like he might’ve been the only guy willing to cover JJ. I have more respect for that young man today. This isn’t just the defense either. This is the O-line and running backs too.

  70. jjbucfan Says:

Koetter knew he would have been fired if Harbaugh would have come here, so he took the year off and shoved it up all our A$$e$. I told you all that he was trying to get himself fired so he could collect Glazer cash without working for it. Glazers probably figured this out and shoved it right back up his A$$ by making him work for it. Meanwhile, we the fans are the only ones that got F-ed. They will both go on remaining filthy rich while we spent our hard earned wages to watch this war of attrition. Thanks!

  71. Jean Lafitte Says:

as the stomach churns …more manufactured clickbait drama

  72. Joe In Michigan Says:

To me, Brent Grimes is in the past. D-Jax, in the past. Now if we somehow decided to bring them back in 2019, there’s a problem. Or bringing in anyone like them (just say no to Jalen Ramsey).

New coaching, new hope in Tampa Bay.

  73. TDTB Says:

By Grimes reasoning, if he was paid more he would play better. If he was the highest paid in the league at his position would it magically make him the best corner? Did it never occur to the moron that, while he may be the best corner on this team at the time, his pay reflected how well he did the job? What a douche bag.

  74. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

    Jmarkbuc Says:
“I’d rather have a team of UDFA that give a damn. rather than all this “Talent”, that is just here to collect a check and check their instagram at halftime.”

Man oh man, Jmark. I know we have had our disagreements in the past… but brother you are singing my tune on this one. — SPOT ON. Beautifully said.

“Grimes is nothing more than a very expensive whre with zero REAL pride in his performance. SHAME on him!!!!”

    Very well said, stpetebucsfan.
