It’s Ok To Cry

October 29th, 2018

Dirk Koetter, Jason Licht and players might not understand the absolute peril the Buccaneers franchise is in right now and how that relates to fans, but Team Glazer sure does and so does Joe.

The 24-year-old franchise quarterback, a veteran of 49 games, was just benched in favor of a journeyman quarterback who already was benched earlier this season.

That’s crisis central right there in the NFL.

But the agony is compounded when your team has lost four of last five games and 14 of its last 20, and they’re on their fourth kicker in those 20 games. Oh, and the architect of the defense is currently working on his golf game and/or enjoying a Bucs paycheck he hasn’t earned.

Frankly, Joe is in absolute agony today and legions of fans feel the same way. Disgusted, frustrated, hopeless, numb, stunned, angry, the emotions run the gamut.

Joe just wants to tell those struggling today that it’s ok to cry. You earned those tears supporting a team that hasn’t won a playoff game since that glorious day in 2003, and by supporting a team that kicks you in the groin repeatedly after whirlwinds of hope fill your soul.

Despite the nonsense Dirk Koetter was spewing on the Buccaneers Radio Network 10 days ago, about how he and coaches take the losses and failures hundreds of times harder than those outside the organization, Joe knows better. And shame on the coach for saying that.

It revealed how disconnected coaches, players and team officials can be — and it happens on every team. They often lose touch with the common fan, the guy who spends money he doesn’t have on Bucs tickets at the expense of other luxuries that could be going to his kids, for example. And then paying off those tickets on a credit card all year long after a another crappy Bucs season — and then doing it all over again for the love of the team.

Some fans literally build their lives around supporting the Bucs. Some even want to be buried with Bucs gear.

Joe feels for the hardest of the hardcore today. Hang in there. Joe is with you.

Yeah, it is that bad.

Joe, they didn’t win a playoff in 2013.

  2. Dewey Selmon Says:

Still not as bad as 0-26 and the 80’s. getting close. lol

  3. Colonel Angus Says:

You mean Jan. 26,2003, a day that will live in infamy.

  4. Reality-is-a-Beotch Says:

the franchise has been in peril every damn year outside of gruden’s glory year

  5. gman Says:

This organization is not worthy of expending any emotion one way or the other.

  6. SteveK Says:

Be thankful we have clarity at the QB position, and aren’t on the hook for a $21 million turnover machine next year.

  7. Don Says:

2013? I’ve been on board since 1976 Joe – it takes days to process the losses by this team –

  8. Dre Says:

Joe I normally do not agree with you … but this is a good read … your points are spot on

  9. Dre Says:

With that said what are everyone’s predictions on who will be the bucs next coach In January?

  10. Lamarcus Says:

    Can I trade my fandom?

  11. Guzzie Says:

The Bucs aren’t on the hook for Winston next year, it’s only guaranteed for injury, the Bucs could cut or trade him, but it’ll just go down as another blunder, imagine what a real offensive coach like Pat Shurmur can do with Winston and the weapons they have, instant Super Bowl contenders, or Jacksonville with a real defense, Koetter scheme is 40 deep passes a game no running game, no defense, tried and true recipe for disaster

  12. Knoxville Buc Fan Says:

I think it could be that JW is tanking it either he’s hoping it will get DK and his coaches as well Jason Licht canned. Or the only chance he has of winning a super bowl is to get the hell out of Tampa. Could a trade be in his future? Hope so cause even if his on field performance improved he has no future in Tampa after the Bengal game

  13. Joe Blahak Says:

The moment Fitz went in, I said we’re winning this game…and it almost happened. The body language of the players said the same. There will be no more rallying around a fraud QB. The fans don’t want it and I’m sure the players and coaches don’t want it. End the mess today or tomorrow. TRADE!!!

  14. Mike Johnson Says:

Having been a Bucs fan since the teams inception, I no longer get my pitities in a bunch over these Bucs. Yes, In my 20’s and 30’s, I built my whole NFl around my team..Prayin and becomin disappointed when we lose. But now, I become comfortably Numb every Sunday.(drinkin) There is no pain. I know what to expect from a team that simply refuses to be a Winner. I drink and watch. If the score is to one sided at the half, My wife and I go to the movies. Cry? Cry for what? This team is not interested in creating Dynasties or a name that lives in the NFl annuals forever..as a winner. We are every year..THE SOB’S (same ole-losing Bucs) It has become past tears or sadness. What a franchise aye?

  15. BucfaninMi Says:

As far as predicting a new HC. I’d like to see them take a look at Mark Dantonio. I’ve never seen a coach get more out of nothing than him. His teams are always ready to go! And almost are always in the game.

  16. WalkdaPlank Says:

“You earned those tears supporting a team that hasn’t won a playoff game since that glorious day in 2013”

I’m sure Joe meant 2003 but even if it was 2013 it’s still depressing..

  17. Larry Says:

Best way to predict future behavior is to look a past behavior. Winston turned the ball over too much in College and it hasn’t and WON”T change in the pros. The Glazers talk about what he has done for the community. That is BS. His job is to win football games. Period!!! The Bucs have MORE than enough talent to be in the 2018 playoffs but they will never get there with Winston as QB. Drafting him was a mistake. Time to move on. When your in a hole that is up to your eye balls, it’s time to stop digging.

  18. libucfan Says:

Its a sad day indeed. I am coming to town (from Long Island) for a conference in a couple weeks and I was going to spend good money to catch the game against Washington. I am not sure I can bring myself to do it anymore.

  19. Fartman Says:

Meh… Not sad. Happy the JW experience is over. Watching him play made me sad. Win or lose this team is more fun to watch with Fitzmagic as the QB.

  20. Bosch Says:

Shame on the Glazers. They do not deserve to have ANY fans. They have the arrogance to think they have a clue about running a professional sports franchise in a league that has a level playing field. If they cannot buy success like they do with Manchester U, they are clueless. They are an embarrassment to the NFL and this community. If they left town and took this failed franchise with them it would be merciful.

  21. El Buco Realisto Says:

Crying and upset fans will only happen if the same mistakes are repeated!!!!! If a new GM and coach are brought in to “fix JW3” and they try to build yet another defense around GMC because some higher ups want to crowbar him into the stupid ring of honor!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    GO Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  22. Resurrection of Duff Says:

Only Jameis fans are crying??? I think reality hit them yesterday. I think we are all pass crying.

When Fitz came in EVERYTHING changed. And that is what Buccaneer fans are looking forward. But not everyone is a Buccaneer fan and understand truly what we have experienced. They are probably still rooting for their childhood team.

But we all must do our job! lol

BTW we are more focused in the up and coming trade rather than crying! You’ll catch up sooner than later.

  23. Buccaneerscotty Says:

    Thank God for Fantasy football

  24. TOM Says:

All I can say is if at the end of the year Licht & the coaches are fired, then the Bucs should make a complete overhaul. Get rid of McCoy, D Jack, Winston, Bennoch, E Smith, Dotson, Grimes, Gholston & start the rebuild & save a lot of cap money. I know its a copycat league but I would find a young head coach like the Rams did & get a GM that knows how to draft. I know everyone gets tired of makes big changes every 2-3 years, but what we got now is not getting us anywhere. Sign Fitz & make Griffin the backup for now. I suggested once trading Winston for Carr but I’m not sure what kind of salary Carr’s getting.

  25. charles Stevens Says:

Trade for Bridgewater, Third round compensation at best, has an iffy knee but can still move around..He surely has talent and hes accurate, short and long.
that keeps Deshaun in the fold because he will have an accurate deep Consistent passer. And saves a first and second for back end help next year.

  26. Greg Says:

I have been crying in anger ever since we drafted the sex offending turnover machine! I’m actually filled with hope having anyone else start at quarterback. Maybe our next quarterback can actually be put on the banner outside the stadium without shame

  27. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

Dre – I am sure your question is rhetorical and is simply a way at digging at Koetter. There is no need for that. Koetter has been doomed by the lack of defensive players brought in by Licht and a franchise QB that simply doesn’t get it. Even thought you are just being mean spririted and trolling, I will say though that the next Bucs coach probably won’t be some top tier talent. This team has been in disarray for a decade now and yesterday at approximately 3:30 it became a complete dumpster fire. No coach with a high ceiling is going to want to join a losing franchise that has no QB in the foreseeable future. Fitz may play for another year or two, but the Bucs are back to having backups and scrubs at the QB position. That is a recipe for disaster so the best and brightest will stay far away from this mess.

  28. LakeLand Says:

    My Crystal Ball is clear

I see the Bucs going another 10 years without making the playoffs
I see another regime coming to Tampa next season
I see 4 more Head Coaches in the next 10 seasons
I see 5 different QB during the next 10 seasons

I see cloudy days ahead for this franchise

  29. charles Stevens Says:

Its sad that Winston hasnt learned when to throw the ball away after four years in the league.
Still trying to do too much.Has a ton of talent .
Single handedly lost that game yesterday.
The bright spot is that the defense has improved somewhat. Its a shame ,the bucs fan base suffers year in and year out. Arrrggghhh !

  30. charles Stevens Says:

Maybe Dungy,or Bill Cowher will come away from the booth and help us right the ship.

  31. SOEbuc Says:

It comes down to team being GOOD by good head coaching and a GM that knows how to talk business not rotating every three years. I think JL is a good business man and scout so maybe if we could get a good HC to run the good young players he’s brought in we could do some good. Then again, JL has been the one bringing in these sh!t HC since he’s been here.

  32. OnlyTruAustin Says:

Joe as crazy as it sounds, a win next week in Carolina and you’re looking at a successful start to the season and in position to content for a playoff spot. Let’s just hope they play Fitz so we have a chance.

  33. SOEbuc Says:

    @charles stevens

No to Dungy. Cowher would be sweet. Not gonna be a busted Gruden and would be able to put nice coaching staff together.

  34. gp Says:

What quarterback would want to play for the Buc’s
    No protection
    No support
    No “got yer back”
    Not from the offensive line
Not from the rest of the team
Not from the staff or front office
    And the so called “fans”……

  35. jerseybuc Says:

I said when we drafted him, we better not miss because if we do it is a 10 year mistake. The 5 years you invested in him, and the 5 years it takes to replace him.
Bottom line go with the most productive QB, and that is Fitz. He is 35 and there are plenty of examples of QBs who get better as they older. Rich Gannon comes to mind, and Steve Young was a not a HOFer until he got under Bill Walsh’s wing and sat for a few years watching Montana.
Can still salvage this season, and better QBs than 3 have been benched and came back to have a good career. Phil Simms was a super bowl MVP but was splitting time with Jeff Hostetler at one point.
Time to steady the ship and move forward.

  36. Tempco1 Says:

Been a ticket holder since 2000.

I drive 2.5 hours to and 2.5 from the stadium to my home.

    I pay $5,000 a year for my 4 tickets (sec 108)

I am a Buccaneer for life.

But I am not sure I want to continue to be a season ticket holder.

  37. ChicagoChris Says:

Yesterday was gut wrenching. I have written some posts defending what we have in Jameis but after Sunday he needs to sit on the bench. For whatever reason he hasn’t learned the single most important lesson a QB can learn which is don’t LOSE the game. I think you have to put in Fitz and see if he can sustain the magic the rest of the season. If he can great, I think you sign him to a 2 yr ext, draft a QB early in the draft to develop, and move forward without Winston. That being said…the odds of Fitz becoming more than he has shown in 13 or whatever seasons is low. I know many won’t agree but as a franchise the Glazers will have to weigh the following….is there a greater chance of drafting a guy and developing him or sticking with Jameis and having him keep develop. People who are clamoring for Fitz are neglecting the fact that this guy has been on what 6 or 7 teams? I have this feeling that if we cut Jameis he is going to go on and take someone else to the playoffs and/or win a Super Bowl at some point. (in Classic Bucs fashion right?) Perhaps that can never happen in Tampa with all the history now but I do believe in his talent and mind set and think it is still better in the long run that maybe 80% of what else is out there in terms of QB talent. Just my opinion.

  38. Pops Malone Says:

Nice work here Joe, and amen to that! Now, can we whack that kicker just so I feel a little better? As for #3, what a meltdown, I’m speechless.

  39. Darin Says:

Hue Jackson was just fired so Dirk will no longer outcoach anyone in the league. Luckily for him he just got the only close win he willl get this year. Cmon Glazers step up now. Lets not waste anymore time

  40. LakeLand Says:

This benching will be the best thing that ever happen to Jameis
He should be hoping that the Bucs release him
He can go somewhere else and win

Jim Plunkett was the worst QB I had ever seen
When he played for the Pats
He once had 8 TD, 25 INT in a season
A career 7.0 career INT percentage
But he won 2 Super Bowls with the Raiders

The Raiders was loaded at every position other than QB
He got a break from Tom Flores, and it paid off

Jameis just have to stay positive, stay focus
    Work on his craft
Everything else will fall in place

  41. Bucs fan #7423 Says:

    Joe,

We improved the defense by firing Mike Smith, and improved our offense by benching Jamies. We still have a shot at making the playoffs. It’s too early to cry, cheer up bub

  42. Bucs4821 Says:

Time to stop being concerned about who the coach is. Team Glazer is 0-4 in picking head coaches. The Bucs need a “football guy” to oversee football operations, like Coughlin in Jacksonville. Let that guy hire the GM who then hires the coach.

  43. Lord Cornelius Says:

I woke up sad as h3ll today.

I feel like an idiot for supporting this POS so long. He did this all to himself.

I really thought the high turnovers were flukey before that game. No excuses for that sh1t. He completely lost that game. It’s 100% on Winston.

Not sure where to go from here… but I didn’t see that coming. I thought we’d be 4-3 today and talking about how Winston finally settled down – similar to every other year when he’s come off multiple turnover games. I didn’t see the melt down coming.

Oddly enough he finally hit Djax lol

  44. LakeLand Says:

The Bucs will definitely be home in January playing Madden

    I got 5 on it

  45. ATLBuc Says:

Joe don’t feel bad for us. We are used to losing after our hopes have been built up.

  46. Lamarcus Says:

I want JW traded from this crap hole team and wherever he goes I’ll go root for them.

    It’s ….been…a….good…27 years… Tampa??

  47. Lamarcus Says:

I want JW traded from this crap hole team and wherever he goes I’ll go root for them.

    It’s ….been…a….good…27 years… Tampa?

  48. uckinator Says:

Threw a bunch of picks at FSU. Why would anyone think that would improve in the pros where the athletes a faster and stronger. I wanted the Bucs to draft Marriota…because he didn’t throw picks in college. But we drafted infamous Jamious and I rooted for him. But, look how he has repaid our support on and off the field. Keep Fitzmagic for another year and improve both lines & the defensive backfield in the draft. Also get a free agent QB this winter. Oh! and pack Winston in bubble wrap so his 21 million dollar deal for next year isn’t guaranteed.

  49. LakeLand Says:

    Lol

You know how it use to be in Lakeland

We use to bet on 5th street
How many points the Bucs will lose by

  50. LakeLand Says:

I wasn’t sold on Jameis or Mariotta

I actually was in the ” Trade Down” crowd
Because you need a QB, that shouldn’t give a reason to reach for one
Just be patience, one will come
Just have a solid team in place for him

  51. stpetebucsfan Says:

Lamarcus….see ya and don’t let the door hit you in the butt on the way out.

@Joe THANKS!!! This was a great post and sadly I think a needed post.

  52. Oneilbucs Says:

I want to see they same thing in new York when sam Donald fail . Cause if you don’t have the coaching staff . Brady went with the right coaching staff.

  53. Mike Johnson Says:

Cut it out El Buco Realisto.. Good try but we all know here you are the Buc Realist..with a new name. You gave yourself away with all the exclamation points. Don’t be ashamed to continue with your real handle. We all know you are a little Touched (crazy)

  54. Im tired and 87 is right Says:

Joe the person you just described is a fan like myself. It’s definitely tough to think about renewing my tickets for next season when we might be back in rebuild mode again. I want to support them but this team just brings to much stress to my life. I just want to see the team be successful and am tired of all the excuses. I want to see Jameis be successful but even he may not even understand what he is causing us fans. I dont think we should give up on him yet but definitely at this time Fitz deserves the keys to the ship while we look into finding a new QB coach for Jameis development. Giving up on him means we will be rebuilding again. I’m not ready for that yet. Go Bucs!

  55. martinii Says:

I can empathize with most of you, but because I am older and can remember the SB victory and the many years of loses leading up to it and since it. I often recall stating during the days leading up to our great victory in San Diego “Please let us win this one and I will never bitch about this team again.” Boy did I F* up. So I stoped crying years ago, realized it is just entertainment, and now my highest expectation is that I will on occasion see a good game, Like Sunday, enjoyed the come back. Crying, agony, and pain should be expended on the real world, not a game. But then like I said, I am older.

  56. Not there yet Says:

Lol cry over the bucs? You as long as they’ve sucked, no one is surprised and we fans calling for a reboot last year knew it didn’t matter what kind of soul searching this coaching staff did it wouldn’t help. In a passing league licht rebuilt the d line in the off-season then kept on by drafting d line electing to go with Chris conte while getting rid of Tandy for Isaiah freaking Johnson did I mention it’s a passing league? The rebuilt d line still can’t rush the passer. Should have dumped everyone last year, it doesn’t matter how many players you give dirk they will suck

  57. Doctor_berto Says:

I’m just crying about them drafting Vea

  58. Ben the Ga Buc Says:

I definitely am dragging today because of yesterday’s outcome. Kind of dreading what the future holds for the Bucs. It wasn’t supposed to be like this this year.

  59. Captain Grumpy Says:

Time to turn the keys over to FitzMagic. He can drive the high powered offense with all its weapons – JW clearly cannot.

If Fitz had played the whole game, the Bucs would have beaten the Bungles easily!

Of course you can. Please do it promptly, if it’s even crossing your mind.

  61. Season Is Over Says:

No one is crying. You would have to care in order to cry. The Bucs created these bitter fans with terrible decisions. Time to pay up.

  62. sbucs Says:

So many mistakes down up and down the whole organization. From ownership through management, by coaches to players. The situation sucks.

  63. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

It wouldn’t be so bad if weren’t stuck with 19.5 mil contract. Licht should be fired over this but the Glazers were dumb enough to sign him (Licht) too for a new contract. Perhaps we should fire the owners.

  64. Buc4evr Says:

Bucs fan since the beginning, this is not the worst it has been by a long shot. We actually have a lot of talent on this team, just not coaches who know how to get the most out the players. Along with some pretty bad drafting this year our fate was sealed.

We need a real NFL head coach. Koetter is as much of a bonehead as Jamis.

  65. Lamarcus Says:

    Ben the Ga Buc

Good cuz it’s coming. This team is garbage on all levels

  66. joestang Says:

Jameis got his karma yesterday. a lack of maturity, talks a good game but cant produce. 4 years is enough time to make a decision on winston. I believe he will never win many games with this team, time to hang out with the other wasted qb’s and draft pics that never panned out with this team.full blame is on Licht, he sucks evaluating talent and free agency. fire him before he does more damage this year with free agency starting tomorrow.

  67. ndog Says:

The part about this is so typical from this town and this horrid fan base. Jameis was horrible yesterday and lost the game lets start there and be very clear. But lets not act like the following did not also occur:

Every starter on our Dline jumped offsides at least once.

Marpet, who we just gave $10 million a year too, had two penalties that brought back huge runs.

Donovan Smith was caught standing and watching on multiple plays with both QBs in the game.

We have the worst kicker in the NFL, period.

We got gashed for over 100 yards rushing in the first half alone.

We gave up 6 sacks to the Bengals who got blown out of the water just a week ago where they could not touch the QB.

So yes everyone is happy the their favorite punching bag looks to be done, but if you think we will start winning all of a sudden you are sadly mistaken. But enjoy your party now cause the next 5 years plus is going to be really ugly.

    Enjoy!!!

  68. Dre Says:

Touchdowntampa I agree with you on this 100 but not agree with you as far as my question .. if you have seen what I have been commenting about koetter … I do not dislike him I feel for him… the situation he’s in … he’s just not the right guy now for this team… hell of a offensive coach though… I hope he stays seriously … but I can’t take this Winston under center anymore … and sadly koetter is on the hook for all this

  69. '79Defense Says:

Very nicely stated, Joe. Well done.

I’ll repeat what I’ve stated before. This team has the worst winning percentage of any team in the four major sports in the US. We’re the worst of the worst. Nobody does it worse than this team, yet we still support them.

I remember crying in Tampa Stadium in 1980 as a kid at my first Bucs game after they lost to the Steelers 24-21. My mother, rest her soul, took me there from our home in Orlando. On their last drive and a game winning score, Doug Williams threw the ball away on fourth down thinking it was third down.

I can’t tell you to what lengths I’ve gone to support this team. Like many others, I’ve been conditioned over the years to take all the losing, sometimes in the most unbelievable fashion… but this is really getting old. Thank heavens we won that Super Bowl.

  70. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Lakeland I am right there with you it seems to be that licht has no vision or plan for anything when building this team. Just like this year and drafting Vea as opposed to Fitzpatrick or James, because 2019 is the best draft in NFL history for firts round DL talent, licht has to weigh Vea against them I would imagine just as he had to compare Jameis to Goff and Wentz who came out in 2016, licht has no idea how to build a winner its painfully obvious, trade down to the Eagles in 2015 and Chip kelly get 2 #1s for the #1 overall and give him mariotta, but this franchise just does dumb things all the time

  71. MtBucsFan Says:

I could see Djax wanting to stay now. He was upbeat evans was on fire. The whole team had a major spark. As soon as JW didnt get that C I felt he lost the lockeroom. There is more going on than we know. If they make the playoffs with Fitz. I don’t think you fire Koetter. It’s still his offense. What has fitz played 4 bad quarters over all his games starting? And almost pulled off the W vs Pitt. Everyone talks about Fitztragic happening. He has never had these weapons before. So I don’t think It happens. We are just a few missed kicks from being 5-2.

  72. Bucs Sam Says:

You are who the tape says you are.

For everyone that wants to say that Fitz is just a 36 year old journeyman QB and JW should continue to get the start, lets just look at the number. Both guys have played about 3 and half games at this point, so what do the numbers tell us?
    JW Fitz
    Passing yards – 1181 – 1550
    Completion % – 64.9 – 68.1
    Touchdowns – 6 – 13
    Interceptions – 10 – 5
    Sacks – 13 – 5
    Ratings – 74.7 – 119.3

Fitz owns JW in every category. 30% more yards, twice as many TD’s, half as many INTs, nearly 2/3 less sacks.

It’s not a question of what is happening next year, it’s a question of can we win today and who gives us the best chance?

I don’t think at this point Derek cares who the starter is game 1 of next year. Win today or find a new job.

Yesterday was the first day in a long time I wasn’t pissed about this team. I see the clouds finally breaking just a bit because maybe, just maybe, the ownership will have had it with this nonsense and actually hire some qualified personnel to run the organization. It starts at the top. They need to hire a top football operations guy, then step back and let that person hire a GM. Let the GM hire the coach. The Glazers need to get out of it and let winners pick who runs things. Forget about names and the past. Get me a proven winner as the president of the organization and let him go to town. I can at least hope for this right?

It all starts at the top. We have owners who frankly could care less about winning or losing, only profits.

Until the teams ownership changes, we’re stuck in the same cycle.

  77. Zam Says:

Franchise quarterbacks don’t get benched. And not in their fourth year. Time to move on at QB.

But we’re on a treadmill going nowhere. Fire the Glazers. They’ve only shown they have no clue how to run a respectable franchise.

Otherwise it’s going to be one idiot coach after another, one lousy GM after another, one over-rated QB after another, one morally-bankrupt player after another.

And that means, all you homers, the way you fire the Glazers is not to spend one dime that helps them. No tickets, no merchandise, and even try hard not to buy things from their advertisers (or don’t watch at all). That’s where you have to commit and show discipline, as a fan. That’s ALL we can do.

True Bucs fans, the ones that cherish memories of Leroy Selmon and Ricky Bell and Jimmie Giles and DB and Tony Dungy, are by and large already doing that. You want a winner, then join them. Otherwise you have no excuse and get what you deserve. It’s really that simple.

  78. Crack3rK Says:

This is the point in the season where I re-claim my Sundays. After realizing it’s all but lost, I go into apathy mode, record the game, check to see if they win. If yes, I’ll watch, if not, I’ll save my time and my fist since I won’t have to punch the walls in frustration.

  79. Jeagan1999 Says:

Several others have already noted this….the players demeanors and body language changed markedly when Fitz came in!

They just don’t believe in Winston like they do Fitz….and it’s easy to see why! You can’t be a human turnover machine and expect the team to keep following you!

Jameis has lost the team with his reckless play. Sad, but that’s where we are now. Time to move on!

  82. D-Rome Says:

    Thanks for the article, Joe.

I was a staunch Jay-Miss supporter for the past three years. Then, the Atlanta game happened. I don’t care what the stats say, he looked like the same player making the same kinds of mistakes. Interceptions will happen sure, but the where and how just kills the team. The Cleveland game cemented my belief nothing has changed with Jay-Miss.

It’s a real blow. Yesterday was a winnable game going into it. Bengals were so decimated and the team needed that win to have a shot at the playoffs. To not only lose, but for all of us to be convinced Jay-Miss is not the answer moving forward feels like a kick to the groin.

There was so much excitement in 2015, so much optimism. We saw some of the mistakes and kept telling ourselves “He’s young, he’s a rookie, he’s the future.” Then, the Atlanta game happened at home that season when he took the team on his back to win that game. That moment silenced the doubters and made believers out of most of us.

We’re so far away from that optimism. Sure, the nutjobs like ndog and other FSU honks are faking belief that he has a future here but they know better. Jay-Miss is not the answer moving forward. The funny thing, is if you had to do the draft all over again picking Jay-Miss was the right decision. He had all the tools and intangibles to be great. Perhaps it comes down to coaching. I don’t think a QB can be developed by a single person like a head coach. Development happens with the assistants. They failed. Really, Jay-Misses failure is an organizational failure as well.

  83. Old Sombrero Kid Says:

I’ve also been with this team since 76 and it hurts bad … Let’s trade Jameis while we have a chance… Let’s say 4 a Cuban sandwich in a cigar from Ybor City

  84. Cobraboy Says:

    I’m not so devastated.

The D is finally showing some improvement. The Smith thing has been the single biggest problem for the team.

A change at QB and K could go a long way.

I’m just tired of Winston being a bonehead and kickers missing kicks. I don’t have big problems with Koetter and Licht.

  85. Season Is Over Says:

Who did Justin and the stick carriers flip flop on this week? We have a pool. I don’t see the podcast.

  86. jjbucfan Says:

One of them has to go, Koetter did not want Jameis from day 1 and as I believe he wanted him to do well, I do believe that he shares this blame because HIS play calling in the first 3 years of Jameis’ career has contributed to the hatred of some in the Buckner fan community. He never really put him in the position to win games, in fact, Jameis had to actually defy him last year to get a win. Koetter is on borrowed time. Look at how the defense has responded to Smith being fired. Why wait? Fire Koetter even if you trade Jameis- this dude is a dinosaur and set in his ways (which don’t work anymore). Elevate Monken for the next 11 games and re-evaluate after the season. Koetter doesn’t have the chops to bring us to the promised land, JMO

  87. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Bucs need to can both licht and koetter in the next few weeks if things continue taking a nose dive to get a new president or GM in immediately…..I would 100% want nick saban to come in here with guidance from maybe rich mckay if he is available but the bucs need to get this GM/President hire correct and rebuild this and get out in front of the coaching carousel hiring process

  88. SC Bucs Fan Says:

If the Bucs are the most important thing in your life then I say, as a Bucs and in general huge sports fan, you are a loser. There are more important things in life then watching men run, pass and kick a ball. Much more. Get a life.

  90. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Season is Over, right on, the loud yellers of the bucs community are so misguided, I mean “stick-carriers” cmon, the HC was never going to be here for a long time, and please when dirk is gone, don’t leave any of the stink around let it all head out to the gulf or Lake Okeechobee or wherever that stuff goes

  91. BucEmUp Says:

I used to get angry, I used to get upset. Now I just watch to confirm nothing has changed from one day to the next. It’s more tiring than anything. It’s like a toddler.kicking and screaming exerting all of his energy trying to get his point across just to end up burned out in submission to the results. I don’t think this team will ever get it’s crap together but I keep watching just so I don’t miss it when they do.

  92. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

@BucEmUp — It’s not as bad now as it was in the 80s and part of the 90s. We will get there man. – We will get there…. eventually!

  94. Clarence Says:

  95. Alanbucsfan Says:

Jameis needs more maturity. Having him watch Fitz and reflect on his mistakes and understanding he cannot panic when making decisions may be good for him. Bucs have alot invested in him and his stock is too low to trade now.

Fitz should start as long as he is effective . Bucs should be patient this year and maybe next on Jameis. They need a couple more pieces on defense and another OLineman or 2 anyway.

The whole team has been making mistakes- Jameis was terrible yesterday, but Fitz threw a pick six and DJax punt return called back cost the Pittsburgh game. Kicker has stunk too.

Again, Jameis should sit and learn and mature- it’s worth the wait and he’s not tradeable now.

Crying joe… almost, but even the late decision of DK to bench JW, was a relief, like a weight was remove from the chest, and it was more….Fitz gave us hope and we were cheering again. The lost was less painful, and we are going to recover even further if Glazers force the front office to trade/gift JW as soon as possible, if they can YESTERDAY will be great.
Bucs have a lot of problems, but you start correcting the most obvious one, get rid of JW.

Nope reality, as I have lived it for the past 15 years in person. You see I actually care about this team unlike most of you who don’t even watch all the games and will just move onto your “second favorite team” as soon as we lose a game or two.

I don’t get the disappointment….We have a team with an explosive offense that keeps us in every game….Only issue is Winston sucks, just bench the dude and roll with the player that obviously excites his teammates and fan base. Believing you have a chance is much better then knowing you’ll lose with Winston. Fitz is the better QB….Fitz gives us a better chance of winning. Not many teams sit 3-4 with the back up improving their odds of success.

We know the Bucs have to move on from Jameis. He has regressed. He has bad judgment, on and off the field. He was worth the gamble, but he crapped out. It happens.

Fitz will do fine. He knows his limits. He may get this team to the playoffs. But clearly, he is at the end of his career, not the beginning. The long term solution is to move on from Jameis and let Fitz have the helm.

I am far from sad or concerned. Fitz and Jackson and Evans and Howard and Barber and Jensen. That’s a good group.

I really don’t know what’s going on with this man but something is going on in that locker room that’s affecting his play. I wouldn’t trade/cut him bc of his piss poor play in this game and if the Bucs do I really got a feeling that he would end up balling out and winning a ship with a new team. I still have faith that he can be the franchise QB of this team but with the right coach that knows how to use his strengths. Meaning getting the ball out his hands quick short routes moving the chains type of offense

  122. Issaic haggins Says:

Listen folks , Winston was terrible but you must developers guys and Far e had plenty of these types of games . Fitz isn’t taking this team anywhere and is it my imagination or is the protection Fitz receives way way way better than Winston’s ( is this scheme) related ?
Also scheme related teams will overload Fritz’s throwing arm and disrupt his lanes and he will be avg at best !!! Unless they give him the big pocket unlike Chicago and unlike Winston ever sees . The protection in New Orleans was off the chart , then by the time Chicago rolled around the d coord adjusted and you saw the results !!! Fitz is crafty and decisive but when pressured especially on the right side he gets real avg real quick . …… Winston was terrible yesterday but he was behind and underneath balls all day , did his qb coach point this out ( answer is NO) , Do they max protect or get up the o lines ass for less effort with a mobile qb( no) , was Mike Evans supposed to sit at the goal line rather than run to the safety ( yes) was Winston horrible yes but for the love of god Koetter please adjust your Very game inside the 20 so they can score td s …………. No Reason to play Fitz that benefits this team beyond one half of Football. You must developers Winston or not for the future !!! Why did he play so much better in preseason , well it’s simple and that’s protection and mainly checkdowns and then not being lazy on the crack downs and being on top of the ball. He is completely ignoring his check downs once again , this is coaching folks !!! Ever see Jimbo get in his ass , ever se Koetter or that makebelieve qb coach get in his ass . He responds to hard hard tough coaching no ho hum panty wastes that can’t figure out M Smith knows football inside out but he’s a terrible coach and a worse teacher . Classic Example , Koetter says Winston sees the field well he can always tell me the look and the defense ……. Dirk that’s reconigzation and understanding defense NOT seeing the field well !!!! While Dirk does great things is beyond clueless in some of his outlooks . They are two different animals but not to Dirk !!! Winston went to the pro bowl his second year and was prob the best of at least top 5 qb the last three games of 17 ,,, so who’s to blame ??? Well I can tell you it starts with more quick precise checkdowns and being on top of the ball !!! You hv to hit your check downs and delayed crossing routes to keep the lv from dropping so deep on the Bucs vertical game . Koetter quit being a little cat and get in his , your Oc and especially your qb coda The is playing oc on the sideline instead of QB coach . He’s 25 and wants 7 on every play !!! Get in his Ass !!!

Some or all of that might be true.

You acknowledge that Winston lost that game.

Don’t try and walk it back.. “Jameis lost the game, BUT”

I think you probably are a devout Buc Fan, but there are no more excuses for this guy. He is Bad and not getting better.

  125. Pickgrin Says:

Looks like I am one of the very few willing to say that giving up on Jameis Winston now would be dumb as hell.

There are 25 games left between now and the end of his rookie contract.

You continue to develop him – whether as the starter or not.

Winston has every tool in the shed. He checks every box on the list when you are evaluating physical traits and capabilities of what you want in a pro QB. Size check, durability check, arm strength check, escape-ability check, make every throw check.

He came into the league with a “football IQ” rarely if ever seen from a 21 year old 2 year College starter.

Yet – somehow, when it comes to Winston all those “booksmarts” get over shadowed too often by lack of good ol’ common sense.

Jameis is ‘turn over prone’. There’s no two ways about it. almost 50 NFL games under his belt now and he’s still making too many bad decisions.

Even last year when he was making somewhat better throwing decisions and throwing less interceptions – his fumble rate inexplicably skyrocketed…

Turnovers are the #1 reason for winning or losing games. Statistically. Verifiably.

The coach or psychologist or parent or mentor who can somehow and permanently get through to Jameis that in order to be great – he has to dial it back a couple notches when it comes to making “risky decisions” – is the person who will help turn Winston’s NFL career into the great success that it was destined to be…

Benching Jameis permanently and/or letting him go or trading him either this or next year would be the worst move this franchise could possibly make at this point.

You keep working with him and giving him more opportunities this year – and if the current coaching staff can’t get him turned around and playing good ball with an acceptable # of turnovers – then you bring in someone else to coach him next year – be it the HC or QB coach – Jameis needs someone different in his ear if he can’t manage to get these turnovers reigned in whenever he gets his chances to play over the next 9 games.

I think moving forward from here in 2018 – sitting at 3-4, the best move for the franchise is to start Jameis and let him know up front that he is on an incredibly short leash. Literally. Game to game – for the foreseeable future.

    As in:
“You make one single head palming decision at any point in the game and I’m pulling your ass instantly and putting Harvard in for the rest of the game – You got it?”

Yesterday’s game was a pretty big speed bump in Winston’s career – but it wasn’t the 500 foot, Grand Canyon sized cliff that most of you seem to be imagining…

Odds are still very good IMO that Winston will be Quarterbacking the Buccaneers in 5 years and probably also in 10 years. There’s a solid young nucleus of a team in place and Jameis is still the center piece.

Thinking otherwise is not really dealing with reality.

Jags spent a #3 overall pick on Bortles. Bortles led the Jaguars to the doorstep of the Super Bowl just last year.

Would you rather have Winston or Bortles moving forward as of right now? Carr? Mariota?? Bridgewater??? LOL

    Perspective people. Get some!

  126. Cobraboy Says:

A cry today? WTF? Finding out Winston is not The Man is a HUGE step forward and clarifies the future.

Excuses have always been made for Winston. “He’s young.” “He’s hurt.” “No RB.” No OL.” You name it.

At some point, you have to blame the player and not the coaches.

I don’t think Winston will ever be more than what we now see: Occasional brilliance sandwiched between dumbass. A QB does not have to be brilliant, but NO team can win with QB dumbass.

Seeing the field well and executing on what you see are two completely different paradigms.

Winston often locks on one receiver and defenses read his eyes. The end zone interception yesterday was a classic example.

I am tired of the excuses for Winston’s poor, erratic play. There is a reason his W-L record is way below .500.

  129. stpetebucsfan Says:

“is it my imagination or is the protection Fitz receives way way way better than Winston’s”

YES it’s your imagination. The only possible scheme changes are that JW frequently holds the ball too long where Fitz has a better internal clock.

But go back and look at the two point conversion that tied the game. The middle of our OL parted like the Red Sea!!! A Bengal defender with a large grin on his face ran through that gap to crush Fitz. Fitz jumped up into the air twisting and avoiding that sack and then QUICKLY finding the open receiver.

JW just does not see the field…open targets…defenders and so he’s handicapped.

Jimbo had strokes on the sideline time after time when JW refused coaching and did his own thing. That’s not talent. Koetter could do not better. So what do we have here… athleticism or talent. James Walker. I believe that Kiffen leaving was huge but the unravel really started when Gruden run Rich McKay off to the ATL. It happened the week before the 7-7 Bucs played the Falcons and of course the Bucs lost. Chuckie hired his lap dog Allen and the bad draft choices commenced along with the horrid free agent signings. Gruden is now repeating this in Oakland…..

Big Dusty Rhodes: say hi to Mr Solie and keep in mind that Saban had a go at NFL ball in Miami and is one of the reasons the Dolphins have been even less relevant than the Bucs ever since the Jags hung 62 on Marino almost 20 years ago. Bucs tried one Bama coach named Curry and his teams were of the 5 or 6 win variety, much like this team down to the color blind mistake prone qbs and bad defenses….

Good article Joe. Made me think of my fave Buc memories: 3-0 in a downpour vs KC and then watching Brent Musberger cringe as he realized his playoff lock of 79, a Tampa loss to Philly was up in smoke….. a-Train and his playoff 40 yard run vs Detroit in 97. The Superbowl run of 2002….. The Bucs won a title and everyone was good with mortgaging the future for it which is still happening but it beats being an ATL fan who has to pipe down when reminded that not only his team lost 2 super bowls but also had the epic collapse of all time vs the Pats……

Great article Joe. Lots of intelligent posts minus the usual drivel from the trolls who only seem happy when the Bucs lose.

‘“You make one single head palming decision at any point in the game and I’m pulling your ass instantly and putting Harvard in for the rest of the game – You got it?”

That statement typifies Jameis, and only goes to prove the point.

This shouldn’t be necessary for a#1 draft pick, in his fourth year.

This experiment has got to be over.
Jameis should play baseball. He’s more suited to it I think.

We were in peril everytime JW took the field as a a starter. He’s a very big part of the reason we have a losing record.

They have a losing record, because they are losers

Thank God they benched Americas Pro Fumbler. Maybe now they’ll win a couple of games. It is a good day not a bad one. Time to move on from this guy. He’s nothing but a big tease. Flashes greatness then makes you really cry.

I can only hope the Bucs are active in some trades today, we really could use some more offensive linemen and defensive backs. Would love to see a team take McCoy off our hands. I love Brate but OJ Howard is the future. I like Humphries chemistry with Winston but Fitz knows how to get the ball to Evans, Howard and Jackson better than Jameis did and those are your playmakers. Shifty receivers like Hump are a good security blanket but Fitz can find Howard or Godwin as a security blanket, we don’t have to have Hump and Brate if they can be replaced by linemen and defensive backs.

If the Giants offered a high draft pick for Jameis I would take it, they will have a top 3 draft pick. Also Redskins will need a QB to back up Alex Smith and if he can’t get them in the playoffs, maybe they take a gamble on Winston.

Jameis needs to work with a better coaching staff that runs a different offense than the Bucs. Winston isn’t a good enough vertical passer but if you put him in an offense that uses shorter routes and more crossing patterns, more simplified reads, faster releases he might be able to salvage his career.

Good luck to him in the future, love his competitiveness but he can’t grasp and effectively run this offense.

Coraboy , you and the announcers are clueless , Evans was released and the read was for him to turn and squat at the goal line in the zone , Evans kept running towards coverage!! ……. the pick was a ball that was two yards behind Evans on a missed read not anyone reading his eyes .
