Humphries At Worst Average

July 8th, 2018

Surprising numbers.

Joe isn’t always anti-PFF tribe.

When the tribe puts out some stats, Joe likes to read them. It’s the player grades where those guys go completely off the rails.

Now the PFF tribe was recently digging into receiving stats and found that Bucs receiver Adam Humphries — Rudy! — might be better than most of you guys think, including Joe.

Per the PFF tribe, Humphries had 483 yards receiving as a slot receiver last year, good enough for 16th in the NFL.

Not too shabby.

And of course, Humphries last year had 229 yards of YAC (yards after catch). That was one yard behind Charles Sims who led the Bucs in that category.

The fact a guy like Humphries has so many yards in the slot, and with YAC, it just reinforces Joe’s wonderment of how the Bucs are absolutely loaded with receivers.

A couple of years ago, Joe never, ever imagined typing that previous sentence.

Hump is a bargain player for sure. And don’t forget he’s not shabby as a punt returner either. He is a great example of every American kid’s dream who is not already labeled a “superstar” at a young age. That is, work hard, beat the odds, make something of yourself, and good things will come. While I think Godwin has more upside and potential, Hump has versatility and ability that makes him a superb depth player.

  2. Fire the glazers Says:

Forcing the ball to mike Evans makes Humphries an afterthought to most defenses.
Which frees him up on plays.
Not to mention the screen throws that they use often, makes him a valuable asset.
If DeSean Jackson gets hurt, gets traded, or simply doesn’t see the field…
I think Godwin will start, but somehow I feel like Godwin and Evans on the field makes Humphries better than DJax and Evans…

  3. AlteredEgo Says:

He is a role player…a consistent one…every team needs a few like him…they come and go…

  4. Lamarcus Says:

The whole team is average at worse. Hump is just a “middle in the shuffle” guy

If he was on the Pats with the same production the entire nation will know his name.

  5. Anonymous Says:

They have so many good young ones (including the draft pick from Penn) that there is a worry that some will not make the squad. Not enough room. Then they will get picked off the practice squad. Tough problem.

  6. stpetebucsfan Says:

ME13 is clearly our best receiver but unlike his first few years he’s FAR from our only talented WR.

Chris Godwin has earned touches! TE OJ Howard has earned touches!

Hump deserves the touches he’s already getting.

Where do all those touches come from? Jameis tended to focus in ME13 until he found Brate and Hump. Hopefully this year he can find Godwin and OJ. That is perhaps the only area where Fitz has an advantage. He doesn’t have “favorite” targets….I think for Fitz his favorite target will be the guy who is open.

    Do the Humpty-Hump!

    St, Pete

Loved your story last night about the swim team coverage….in Bristol..

I once preempted with a informercial for stop smoking… a 30 minute Bush Clash NASCAR event….not knowing it was live…..it was in NC……I had the station’s master control operator calling me at home because hordes of rabid fans were pounding on the doors of the station
Needless to say, I never did that again.

As far as Hump….every team needs solid 2nd, 3rd tier players that are reliable….Hump fits that mold for us.

  10. Cobraboy Says:

IMO, he’s one of the top slot receivers in the NFL. The Pats have won Super Bowls with huge production from the slot, regardless who it is.

  11. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Adam Humphries is on a par with early Wes Welker. Better than he was actually.

It took Welker 4 years to break the 600 yard mark, and Adam Humphries did it in his second and third years.

The only reason Adam Humphries had a lower year last year was because Jameis was being told to force the ball to Desean Jackson. This limited the catches of Evans, Humphries and Brate.

If Winston and Fitz are permitted to throw the ball to those guys (along with Godwin), we’ll see the numbers explode. At least Godwin fights for the ball, unlike Jackson who is afraid of being hit.

  12. Tampadeuce Says:

Lol, never accidently clicked the “pff tribe” link until now… good one joe

  13. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

DJax is the WR who is holding this offense back. Licht needs to trade him as soon as possible.

  14. stpetebucsfan Says:

    @TBBF

That’s a scary story! I bet you got an earful from the NASCAR fans.

  15. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Bonzai

I actually agree…Djax/Jameis is the problem…..I think they both share some responsibility for that…..we would be fine with Evans/Godwin/Hump/ and the others as long as there was no injury….also because of our 2 pass catching TEs.

Considering money vs need….Djax is expendable….$4 mil per TD….(expensive) in anyone’s book.

    Yes…..don’t try that in Kingsport……

    So Many Weapons!

If our OL is improved how do opposing DCs gameplan for us?

  19. AlteredEgo Says:

“Wes Welker”… NE….LOL….except for one thing…the accuracy ,vision, timing, defense reading QB of the Bucs

  20. EA Says:

SB, the same way they game planned last year, nothing has changed.

  21. Kobe Faker Says:

“Kobe has no fear Godwin will get targets because both Djax and MEME will be out with numerous injuries however our other xplosive reciever OJ will not be targeted again last year because he will be mostly blocking in the line”

“2018, we will be 4-12 and JW3 will be traded. History repeats itself. Only when you leave Tampa Bay does QBs win and suceed”

  22. Anonymous Says:

Licht should trade some of the over abundance of receiving talent, and shore up the OLine.

  23. nobucsgiven Says:

That we have such a stacked receiving corps and a 1st overall pick QB, but can’t seem to score points is an indictment on our coaching staff. Where is the creativity in play calling?
If DJax can’t connect with Winston on the deep ball, get it to him on screen passes and sweeps. If ME13 is always double teamed, keep finding OJ with the deep seam. Get Godwin more touches, he can do it all. I know our coaches are the ones making the big bucks, but it baffles me that the talent doesn’t line up w the scoring.
If Winston is the problem, let him walk. Won’t hear any complaints here.

  24. I Bleed Pewter Says:

Yeah, all this talent on offense and Winston still can’t score more than 20 points per game. Winston’s lack of discipline kills whatever strides he makes. He’s been way too careless for the last 3 years. He will flash brilliance one minute and then wipe it all away with an unforced boneheaded turnover. That’s not playing smart and with his gunslinger mentality it doesn’t matter how much talent is surrounding him because he takes way too many risk. There can be great rewards in taking big risk, but there can also be terrible consequences too, and more times than not it bites us in the @ss. Everyone blames his play on Koetters play calls but I guarantee Winston doesn’t follow the play to the letter either. Usually when a QB has mastered reading defenses the coaches will give them more autonomy to change the play at the line of scrimmage. I’m not seeing that, and that’s what’s hindering his development. So much for football smart.

  25. m0j0 Says:

Humphries is very shifty and smart. However, I see him losing a lot of touches this year as Wilson will get some touches and DJax will take some snaps from the slot as well due to Godwin’s ascendance outside.

  26. Defense Rules Says:

@SB … “So Many Weapons! If our OL is improved how do opposing DCs gameplan for us?” Go back into the archives SB and I’d bet you could find others using those exact same words … LAST YEAR. The result? 5-11 and an offense that averaged less than 20 pts/game in terms of production. In 10 out of 16 games our offense scored 21 pts/game or less. Our average time-of-posession was a tad less than 30 mins/game.

The vaunted offense hasn’t really improved in the last 3 years. Looks good in the shower (OK, marching up & down the field) BUT … POINTS SCORED are all that count; YARDAGE doesn’t mean diddly. It’s fashionable to blame the defense, or the running game, or the kicker, but reality is … if this Bucs’ offense put the ball into the end zone more no one would give a hoot about those because we’d be winning a whole lot more.

Year after year I see the same things: Win the TOP battle AND win the turnover battle, and you’ll most likely win the game. Win the rushing battle also, and you’ll be even more likely to win the game. Lose all 3 (TOP, turnovers, rushing) and odds are really high you’ll lose the game. Lose 2 of the 3 and you’ll still most likely lose the game. Re-look at the Bucs games & that’s what we’ve been fighting: more times than not, we beat ourselves. NOT THIS YEAR. NO EXCUSES 2018.

  27. JameisNOT Says:

@bonzai: are you sure you know anything about football?? Welker got better because he had Tom Brady throwing him the ball. AND the Bucs head coaches are not telling dumb as any of hammers JW to always throw to Evans…. Winocheo just does not have the mental capabilities to go through his progressions. JameisNOT has all the physical abilities in the world but his brain does not have the ability to keep up with his physical abilities. Hence, holding on the ball too long (resulting in fumbling) because he has been coached to go through his progressions but just does not have the mental horsepower to remember what the check downs actually were. This is why it is so VERY rare to find the correct balance between physical abilities along with mental abilities. I speak the truth, I am the truth, and the truth HURTS.

  28. SB Says:

Well Defense, We added Jensen and moved Marpet back to his normal position. That alone should help some. Got rid of Sweezy and we don’t know what we will get out of Dot so let’s hope Licht pulls a fast one for a good Vet before the season starts.
My point was only that with so many weapons on offense, as long as the OL is competent we will be hard to cover. Add to that at least an average Defense and our record looks a whole lot better than before.

  29. AlteredEgo Says:

JameisNot…as few days ago on the SEC channel I caught a show on the Manning’s.Archie~Peyton~Eli…it occurred to me that they are scientific-technical QB’s and the heroics follow…..Jameis never embraced the scientific /technical QB postion….he has always gotten by on hero…hero…hero…and I don’t think he has Manning,Brees,Brady QB DNA…he is more like Freeman…a big athletic kid but incomplete in the NFL

  30. BucEmUp Says:

I know realist thinks humph is a below average wr…….good thing he isn’t evaluating our players huh???!!!

  32. DB55 Says:

    RE: Scoring points

So I’m watching redzone replays this morning and they cut to Bucs vs panthers. The offense drives the length of the field. 3&6 on the 5. Jameis finds Godwin in the front of the endzone put the ball away from the defender waist high. The ball hits Godwin in both hands but he drops it. FG attempt is good.

Plays like this where the details escape most people are the difference between winning and losing but jw has a target on his back so….

  33. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

I love Hump because he always makes the first guy miss.

He doesn’t have breakaway speed but he is shifty and smart. He will turn a 7 yard gain to an 11 yarder.

I really wish he didn’t fumble in the Bills game and give them the tying score but I dont blame Hump. That defense yakked on themselves (3 play TD drive) to end that game and they are the reason we lost.

Oh and what did Jameis do? Well besides giving us the lead in the 4th quarter and bringing us back in the game down by 11, he completes 32/44 (73%), 3 TD, 1 INT, 1 Fumble. All while playing hurt. But yeah it’s all his fault the Bucs suck hahaha.

  34. Kobe Faker Says:

To the Buc sheep who wants to run Jaboo out of town

Keep your eyes on the young QBs, mayfield, rosen, darnold, allen, mahomes….

If they falter, JW3 trade value rockets

If couple of them tears it up, Glazers will be wanting a QB in the 2019 draft

Kobe thinks rookies are going to look silly or not even be ready to take a nfl snap. Prescot, watson, trubinsky are going to be exposed next year….

There will be teams lining up to grab Jaboo for cheap (2nd round)

“My inside info (jenna L) has told me Cincinnati Bengals are in the lead”

  35. Defense Rules Says:

@SB … “with so many weapons on offense, as long as the OL is competent we will be hard to cover. Add to that at least an average Defense and our record looks a whole lot better than before.” Sounds to me like we’re BOTH optimistic about this year. The defense has to improve with this infusion of new talent, even with a young Secondary. I still think the right side of our OLine is probably our weakest link. I love Dotson (lots of heart), but I’m just not sure he can stay healthy. RG is still a big question-mark in my mind; that’s why I’m really hoping Licht can shore it up with a veteran Guard pickup before season starts.

Fitz initially, then Jameis are the keys to this season IMO. IF they BOTH play well, we’ve got a shot at a 10-6 maybe even 11-5 season. If Fitz fizzles to start the season (which I don’t think will happen), then we’re probably looking at anywhere from 9-7 to 7-9. Anything less than that and lots of heads will roll I’m afraid, and I don’t want to see that. We desperately need some coaching stability … can’t keep constantly changing philosophies & systems.

Oh we know, you love them when they praise Bucs and hate them when they don’t. They’re right about Donovan Smith, just admit it.
