Ranking Dirk Koetter

July 8th, 2018

Not a kind review.

We are under three weeks to go before Bucs training camp opens and football will be back!

(Joe is jonesing for football like any fellow red-blooded American male. But Joe simply cannot get into the CFL or flag football. Give Joe real 11-on-11, no-head-start-running-on-offense football. With helmets and shoulder pads and hitting, please.)

In the coming days, there will be all sorts of rankings of various different things floating around the interwebs. This one is a ranking of NFL coaches from TheBigLead.com. Dirk Koetter is not highly regarded by Henry McKenna, who lists Koetter way down the totem pole at 29th overall.

He’s an offensive mind that hasn’t figured out how to turn Tampa Bay into an offensive juggernaut. They’re getting the yards (ninth) but not the points (18th). Jameis Winston hasn’t developed into elite passer (though that might fall onto Winston). Koetter has no playoff appearances, and a 43.8 winning percentage in two seasons. To make things worse, Winston’s suspension will almost certainly put the Bucs in a 0-3 hole, and effectively end their season.

This three-game suspension is a brutal killer. Starting 0-3 is a virtual death knell for teams. The Bucs’ season, if they start 0-4, could unravel quickly.

If that happens, Joe is expecting an interesting January, and not because the Bucs will be playing any meaningful games.

January football. Remembers those days?

IF….we go 0-3 and end up with a losing record….

I’ve been a fan of it all…Koetter, Licht,Jameis but if we have a losing record?

I gotta be honest. As much as I like Koetter and Licht and believe one season is too small a sample to be making such grand pronouncements as McKenna who looks like an idiot compared to someone like Thomas Bassenger…the 9-7 season nor the 5-11 season answere all our questions.

THIS was supposed to be the year to answer those questions from coaching to QB!!!!

Jameis messed that up totally costing the franchise valuable time. Jameis lovers…he may be a nice guy set up by TWO women…an innocent victim…but at least UNDERSTAND one thing. Innocent or not…great human or not…HIS choices have put this franchise’s future going forward.

So for me…if we go 0-3 and post a losing record…it’s time to clean house…fair or not. But I mean clean HOUSE…not just Licht and Koetter but the guy as responsible as anybody for hosing us this year Jameis Winston. ALL three should go.

  2. SlappinTheKitty Says:

All new regime next year GM and coach. New GM will clean house and draft a QB in 2020. Jameis will be traded to get the pick we want. IMO

  3. RustyRhinos Says:

I wish these “experts” who all know we will no win our first three games.
, could share their invite into the mega millions @ 300+ million the could stop thinking they can predict the future. It is my belief that we will win all three games, we have the talent and skills on Offense. E
Yes, even without the Savior playing. I believe our Defense is going to set the tone for our team, we have some experienced talent on that side of the ball too.
Yes we play the Superbowl champs eagles and Stealers with a opening game at our division camps house. So what, the only thing that matters is if the Bucs are ahead at the end of the game. Every team is a difficult row to hoe! Bring our best game and start kicking arses from our first game of the season to the last game we earned the right to play. I for one here on JoeBucsFan think we are going to kick ads and take names the entire season. Bring it every play!
    Go Bucs!

  4. AlteredEgo Says:

Only way to think RR !!

  5. Destinjohnny Says:

    Middle of the
Pack coach that has 6-10 talent
Maybe a really good coach could take this team to an 8-8 record

  6. Drew Says:

I wish I had your crystal ball Joe. What if… they go 3-0 without Winston? Can you write an article about this?

  7. BucNole Says:

    It’s really pretty simple
We are who our record says we are – UNTIL we prove it!
I personally dont think 1 player has that much impact on winning – this is a 53 man squad
If the coaches coach well and the players play well you have just as much chance at winning as the other team.
It usually comes down to who makes the most plays and who makes the most mistakes.
Until we can consistently WIN games – nobody is gonna be giving us the benefit of the doubt.

  8. Dreambig Says:

Oh crap. We are going 0-4? Ok, I might as well do something else for those 4 weeks if the games are over already. How much did we lose by?

  9. Ndog Says:

Just an observation this fine Sunday morning. Isn’t this site called Joe Bucs FAN? Isn’t sports supposed to be about fun? Well just to let you know posting 8 articles a day EVERY DAY telling us how bad our team is going to suck is not fun. So keeping trying to make that money but once people stop having fun for too long they will stop coming back. Heck the Browns are just as crappy as us, worse actually, and they seem to find some fun and excitement. Here all we get is, Jameis is not the future, Dirk Koetter sucks, Mike Smith can’t coach anymore, we can’t develop DB’s (this one in basically every article), Licht drafted a Kicker in the 2nd round, we should never have let Michael Bennett walk, Blount was awesome yet we screwed that up, trading for Revis was horrible, Jermery Stevens was a thug, Schiano was a tirant, coach Morris won but had no control, should have never fired Gruden, blah blah blah.

  10. Ndog Says:

Oh yeah one last thing, this website looks more and more like Tom Jones’s twitter feed. So if I wanted that I would just go there.

  11. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

If the Bucs can score an average of two more points per game they’ll be among the best in in the league.

  12. Sumo Says:

I have to admit I’m real tired of people saying this team is going to go 0 and 3 at the beginning of the season. There are a lot of good players on this team and I believe they’re going to be better than people think. I live for great defensive football and I believe they fixed the problems.

  13. Pete I Says:

a very accurate take by McKenna but again it assumes America’s Choir Boy was going to help in those games, he may help more by missing them and taking his turnovers with him. No telling if we get Fitzmagic or Fitztragic and if Koetter can even put together a game plan to help the situation. Yep – not much looks good so far.

  14. Roy T. Buford Says:

Yup, If the Bucs lose a single game in first three, it is yet again Winston hurting his team. After all, the Bucs used a mint to get Winston 1st pick overall so he could play games, score points, and win. Geeze, at least give them a chance to win. In this case (possibly going 0-3), it’s because Winston is not even giving his team the option to put him out there. Yeah, great leader, great face of the franchise, a model citizen. Not. Yet again Winston hurts his team.

  15. Roy T. Buford Says:

    @Pete…”Fitzmagic or Fitztragic.” Pretty good…

Still think they need to bring in an NFL experienced QB to back up/compete with Fitz, for the first games and more. Think Winston needs to earn both the starting QB and 2nd spot back…when he is back from hurting his team yet again.

  16. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

If the Bucs go 0-3 with Fitz that basically proves that the team is really bad with or without Winston. The Saints go up and down like a yo-yo from year to year it seems. I absolutely think they could win that game. I think Joe is really underestimated how much better the defense should be this year. They addressed every area of need on that side of the ball. If either of these CBs can hit the ground running, with an improved d-line (dramatically most likely) this defense could be beastly. If that RB turns out to be the next rookie RB to play well the offense should be balanced. We have a plethora of weapons on offense. The one thing that is a big concern for the team is the right side of the o-line. Outside of that, this team should be solid and be able to compete with every team they play.

  17. JJV Says:

The best time for the Bucs is before the season begins. Everyone is 0-0. Hope, dreams, and visions of sugarplum are all in fans heads. Then Santa brings coal for another season. Happy Christmas in July!

  18. Joe Says:

wish I had your crystal ball Joe. What if… they go 3-0 without Winston? Can you write an article about this?

Joe lives in the real world. And the only fantasies he traffics in involve Rachel Watson and various yoga moves. 🙂

If somehow this happens, start planning on both a Super Bowl run and to embrace Jameis as a playoff quarterback. 😮

  19. stpetebucsfan Says:

I love the Bucs and will obviously root for them no matter who is under center.

But I’m not going to stick my head in the sand. Jameis choices and behavior..ON and off the field have simply been unacceptable. The first step in correcting a mistake is admitting your mistake.

So if we go 3-0 we have a brewing classic QB controversy and Jameis will have that to deal with as well as the normal NFL challenges…no I do not believe Fitz gives us a better chance to win than Jameis who is clearly a superior “talent”.
So Jameis can win some games…he also loses some….Fitz will not be taking over games but he won’t lost them either…if we go 0-3 the pressure on Jameis to win bigly and save the season just gets incredibly intense.

  20. Defense Rules Says:

@Joe … “We are under three weeks to go before Bucs training camp opens and football will be back!” Why does it seem Joe like this is the longest interlude between OTAs & training camp that we’ve ever had? The NFL & NFLPA need to re-look at their CBA. This can’t be good for the coaches or players, and it’s certainly not good in terms of keeping fan interest up IMO.

  21. I Bleed Pewter Says:

If we go 3-0 despite Winston, then say goodbye to your “America’s QB” at the end of the season. Winston will be holding Fitz’s water bottle and in no way sniff the start QB spot going into the playoffs unless Fitz gets hurt. There’s too much on the line and Koetter and company would be fools to hand the keys back over to Winston, and have him torpedo their efforts when Fitz is there hot arm.

  22. stpetebucsfan Says:

    D.R.

Excellent point. For a league that generally gets promotion it’s amazing that the NFL has not done something to keep their brand more out front

  23. Joe Says:

Why does it seem Joe like this is the longest interlude between OTAs & training camp that we’ve ever had?

Maybe Joe is coming at this will a totally different perspective but can’t believe it has been so quick thanks to Roger Goodell and Jameis. 🙂

  24. BucNole Says:

@Destinjohnny – Maybe a really good coach could take this team to an 8-8 record

This team has talent to spare on the offense – we just need a HC that knows how to use them correctly – IMO

  25. Anonymous Says:

    Bucnole

The coach also needed to be aware after last season, his DC wasn’t getting it done. If Rob Ryan could get fired in NO after a horrible season..why not Smitty?

DK is a glorified OC, always will be.

  26. Kobe Faker Says:

The vertical time consuming passing attack is ancient and doest suceed in the “kill the head of the snake” modern game

Where is the greatest show on earth mike martz? Without the nonstop short screens to marshal faulk, the deep passing game doesnt work

What happened to bruce arians witout the nonstop short passing to david johnson? It broke carson palmer to pieces into retirement

Why are 2 40 years tb12 and brees still productive and winning? Both would be broken in half in koetters system

To win (mcvay rams and pederson eagles) you need to run the short passing attack to defeat the defense, pass rush and keep your QB in 1 piece

Jameis was banged up every year he has been in the league. JW was very fortunate he was only out last year. Fritz wont make it thru 3 games. Get ready for ryan smith griffen.”

“Koetter destroyed my career and everything Kobe posts is true”

    Blaine Gabbert

  27. bucanation Says:

Bucs have no respect around the league from anyone an due to coaching and ignoring the rb position until this year , bucs get what they deserve but they have the talent to be a good team too bad it will take a real head coach to bring it out .Fans have to suffer yet again and we pay the bills Wow

  28. bucanation Says:

Bucs just needed a real nfl football coach that that have the respect of the players. they may like him but they do not respect him we don’t need a barney fife but a strong leader like a bill Cowher type . One thing I give the coach credit for it was reported he wanted Marcus over JW as did I ,just one bad move after another and the bucs have to break this pattern

  29. Big Daddy 58 Says:

Coach Koetter has been put in a difficult spot.
The possibility of an 0-3 start fits squarely on his shoulders.
Let’s play a couple games before panic and doom set in.
I believe any team can be beaten on any Sunday however we have to find a way to do it at least twice .This is Koetter and Smith’s time to shine.I think they can get it done !!

  30. Mort Says:

Why the F is everyone just writing in an L for the first three games? Are you all drunk and need to take a huge sh!t?

  31. Destinjohnny Says:

    Big nole
Talent to spare at wideout and tight end 100%
Right tackle old and coming off injury
    Left tackle average
    Right guard good
    Center okay
    Left guard below average
Qb when not under suspension for being a caveman
23 best qb, who can’t come off his first read and had consistency issues.
Running game….. We drafted a 3rd down back that looks explosive
And we have some journeymen they haven’t proven anything.
    6-10

  32. Brad Isherwood Says:

Last year was a predictable nightmare.
    The Team was physically weak…
From pre season you could see it.
Then came the predictable mistakes and injuries.
Every thread last year here was about some players injury and WTF?

Gruden Superbowl year win Bucs were Physically strong.
They overcame with big plays…and lots of that occured O & D

Years later…..Bucs have had some good teams which other teams respected.

It’s all circled the drain last season
From kicker choke to JW can’t see Downfield
    It was predictable fail

Apology for being so negative. ..
A Champion team with a history of being good in one of the most competitive divisions,
Should not stumble and puke,….be carted off the field like last year.
Bucs were – On any given Sunday…and worse than the team in the movie

  33. Defense Rules Says:

@Joe … “Maybe Joe is coming at this will (with?) a totally different perspective but can’t believe it has been so quick thanks to Roger Goodell and Jameis. 🙂” LOL. You’re right Joe, it is all a matter of perspective. I guess that when you’re in the media, bad news is better than no news. Myself, I’d prefer these ‘long interludes’ be kept down to 2 weeks at the most.

  34. BUDDY Says:

I just wanted to thank a few guys for truly being Tampa Bay Buc “Fans” and keeping up your heads instead of being what has to be plants from other teams.

Thank you to Rusty Rhino, Altered Ego, Drew, BucNole, Dream Big, Bonzai, Sumo, Touch Down, Big Daddy, a couple of others and finally NDOG. “FOR BEING ACTUAL FANS”

NDOG, I have to say that you made the best point of all. Well Said brother.

Also, for anyone that is new or somehow just skipped to the end and read I wanted to save you some time with a couple of the commenters that you may see that post a few times on each thing that the Joe’s write up and usually more.

Just trying to save you some time on two of those commenters. That would be St. Pete and Roy T.

Those 2 guys are much like Charley Brown’s teacher. They just continue the same negative line so after you read just one comment of what they write you have the gist forever. So it ends up sounding like Wa Wa, Wa Wa Wa wa. Wa wa wa wa wa… Puke.

Those 2 only have negative to go around and around and around. The problem with them is that they are FAILING to realize that it takes a TEAM! No I in team guys. So, all you need is one read from them.

Thanks for reading my little take and maybe the Joe’s can find something positive to write about. Like NDOG and others are trying to say, WE HAVEN’T EVEN STARTED YET. There are going to be 53 total guys (highly talented guys) and within that there are (3) total QB’s and as it was more than CRYSTAL CLEAR, it takes more than just one quarterback to win or lose a game. Que the Kickers, the entire Defense ect. for having EQUAL responsibility and that has now possibly been adjusted.

So, how about something to smile and look forward about.

Let’s wait to puke if we actually go 0 and 3. OK

Form an actual fan who does BELIEVE.

Thank you so much and have a nice day.

  35. bucanation Says:

Never said we go 0/3 my hope is we can go 2\1 but I will never root for JW again I hope the bucs will be the surprise team of the nfl the fan deserve it ,and ive been with this team sense 76 and so have a lot other fans and we have seen it all my friend and we are still buc fans BUDDY BOY

  36. John B Says:

If he can get us to 8-8 or better with the 3 game Mulligan, you keep them and I for one would think we are on the cusp of getting over the hump

No matter the mulligan if we finish under .500 it’s time to clean the Coaching staff for sure

The GM could survive if the kids and the new FA play well – but if that happens we are probably 500 or better right?…

Certainly no shortage of drama and doubt this season the complete opposite of last year, very intriguing to see how they all respond

  37. Buddy Says:

Let’s see, I didn’t realize you went by two handles on here but honey. Which one are you? Pete or Roy? I don’t remember saying it had to be any particular quarterback. Just that the TEAM is supported little honey.

You’ll be alright once you learn to be a “real fan”

    So which one e you?

  38. DB55 Says:

The best thing that could happen is jw get a new agent and find a trade partner. Or better yet cut him, I sure no one will sign him again.

The fans and media have spoken, the Bucs can do better without Winston.

We all know who the real face of the franchise is.
