Smith Has “Good Shot”

In the running on west coast.

In the running on the west coast

Yes, Joe was and is very concerned Mike Smith winds up as the head honcho for a certain NFL team on Florida’s east coast.

But Joe might have the wrong coast.

Albert Breer of theMMQB.com, who for reasons not so clear was Twittering last night using his company’s handle, @theMMQB, offered updated information on Smith’s quest to land a head coaching gig.

Instead of his next job being on Florida’s east coast, the job might be on California’s west coast, Breer believes, specifically the Los Angeles San Diego Chargers.

@FoedusFDG: Does Mike Smith get a HC job?

@theMMQB: Good shot at San Diego, as I see it. They view head-coaching experience as a plus, and he’s the one they’ve talked to that has it.

In addition, Joe has read up on the reported desires of the Spanos clan and, aside from uprooting the Chargers to Los Angeles in a few weeks, they seem intent on hiring a defensive guy because they like their offensive coaching staff.

That doesn’t sound good to Joe at all.

    Hope he gets the job he wants but selfishly I also hope he doesn’t get it this year and finds a way to be happy in Tampa for one more season.

  2. Giovanni Says:

    Let’s hire REX Ryan and our defensive coordinator

  3. THETRUTH Says:

    Chargers organization a coach killer, for Smith sake I hope he gets something better if he leaves

  4. BROCKTACULAR Says:

    Ryan’s defensive style doesn’t fit our personnel.

  5. WhatdaBUCisthis Says:

    So what Brock
    I’ll gladly take a complete switch to a 3-4 D
    I think we have most of the personnel
    Imagine Noah standing up to rush the QB

  6. Defense Rules Says:

    Agree with THETRUTH … ‘for Smith’s sake I hope he gets something better if he leaves’. AFC West is not only a strong division right now (Kansas City, Denver, Oakland) but it’ll probably be strong for quite awhile. San Diego looks like odd man out to me for several years at least no matter who coaches it. I think that Jacksonville is a much better fit for Mike Smith … it’s stocked with some excellent, younger players and the AFC South division as a whole doesn’t appear to be nearly as strong as the AFC West, thus Jax should improve/turn around faster with someone like Smitty at the helm. Also hate to lose him, but he’s a great coach and a great person, and deserves another shot at HC.

  7. Mike Says:

    Why would you want to switch the entire defense when that was clicking this year? Makes no sense. Promote from within or hire Gus Bradley. Scheme is similar and knows how to run a defense

  8. Harry in Costa Rica Says:

    I would REALLY love to have Phillips as our DC. That man might be one of the best DCs ever. But I think he runs a 34 defense, right?

  9. Sapp, STFU Says:

    Everyone should take the best employment opportunity they can. however, wish he would stick around for a few more years and see this through. HC jobs will be there each year.

  10. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

    Now that’s the The Truth.

  11. DallasBuc Says:

    Harry- yes, philips runs a 34 defense. We need a strong 43 guy to build on the approach Mike Smith has had here. No way I want to see us change to a 34. We are not in full tear down mode as a team anymore.

  12. Blake_Bucsfan Says:

    Not that i’m completely against switching schemes, but Rex Ryan? No thanks. Check the facts, in the last year under Doug Marone, the Bills had 50+ sacks and one of the best defenses football. In the first year under Ryan, they dropped to under 30 sacls with virtually the same line, and slipped to the middle of he pack defensively. In addition to running Mario williams out of town.

    So I’ll pass on Rex.

  13. Buc believer Says:

    @WhattheBuc you believe we have most of the personnel to run the 3-4 defense?? Seriously dude or dudette you ARE joking right? We would need to change over 75% of our personnel and that would set us back a few years while everyone gets used to it. You do watch football right?

  14. WhatdaBUCisthis Says:

    Dallas this wouldn’t b a tear down per say
    Stand up Noah. Might be better either way
    Big Will
    GMC
    Ayers on the line with insane depth at that point
    If we go after say a player like Poe in FA, your signing a MONSTER… One who plays in a3-4

    I’m really concerned the the defense would take a step backwards. We waited a long time for a good defense.

    We actually played a lil this season, last second switch before the snap. Don’t hold me to it but I thought they did fairly well on those plays
    Just saying…I wouldn’t mind a DC who isn’t scared to call some style of 3-4 plays and utilize different looks and players
    I remember coach saying we had more than 11 starters on D,
    I ask that we draft only lineman this add more and skill players in FA and maybe later rounds…
    Yea and I don’t follow any college sports… So I ask why is no one talking about lineman in any your post

  17. WhatdaBUCisthis Says:

    @Buc B
    I’m serious. I’m a dude lol I watch the games lol have been since ’78. This would not set us back. Y’all kinda tripping with this. We have most of the pieces now. What you speak of? Sign Poe, trade McCoy, sign another ILB, draft one also
    Resign will draft this Peppers kid if we can and, there you go. Oh we still Jac Smith
    I think it would work instantly. My main reason is because your standing up Noah and Smith
    IMHO

  18. WhatdaBUCisthis Says:

    Resign Will, try to draft this^^^

  19. R.O. Says:

    Who says MS wants their Offensive coaching staff? PR has a tendency to throw picks at crucial times.. MS is going to want his coaches in key spots.

  20. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

    I stopped reading the last post when you nonchalantly said trade McCoy! Now I just have to lump you in with the dumb posters.

  21. T in Orlando Says:

    “they seem intent on hiring a defensive guy because they like their offensive coaching staff.”

    Do we think Mike Smith would want to take a HC job where her couldn’t bring in his own staff, both sides of the ball? While in Atlanta he was a overseer of the whole team, not too hands on with the Defense. I would think a HC like that would like to bring in his own guys that he trusts.

    Wisenhunt is a good OC, but unless Mike Smith has a history with the him, I wouldn’t think Smith would be too keen on keeping him.

  22. Blake_bucsfan Says:

    You can’t just draft all lineman if the value isn’t there. Imo There aren’t any O-line worth Drafting in round 1. And I haven’t done nearly enough research to tell you what Lineman we should target outside of the 2nd round. But I can tell you that there are a few vets I would target in FA. Calais Campbell, JPP, and Jabal Sheard being 3 of them that would all fit into the scheme that we currently run.
    Assuming Smith stays or we hire from within.

    If it aint broke, don’t fix it. The D was REALLY good in the 2nd half of the season in multiple categories. So I don’t see the need to do a massive scheme change just cause you think Noah Spence would be good standing up.

  23. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    Why the hell are people on here constantly bringing up hiring Rex Ryan?!?!

    ……..the thought of that ass clown in Tampa just makes me wanna vomit!!!!

  24. Blake_bucsfan Says:

    @TheBucsAnthem

    ^Same dude.

  25. 941BUCFAN Says:

    Hey Joe,is the Glazer Trio really going to allow this guy to have a choice?!what are they waiting for?everytime Tampa has something good we/they let it get away…..Aqib Talib,Lagarette Blount,MICHAEL FREAKIN BENNET!!!!!DONALD PENN!!!They need to give this guy bags of money to compliment his eyes.can you imagine if we pick up 2-3 more players to compliment the Defense?not talkin about starters but depth at CB and S/FS.but preferably another big name DE with skills to stop the run.If we finished in the top 10 Defenses in Smittys first year imagine next year!i feel like Ayers,Spence,Grimes and Tandy were just giving us a taste of next year and next year could be it!if we get a real #2 & 3 WR and a RB Tampa will be something to fear for once on both sides of the ball.

  26. WhatdaBUCisthis Says:

    Touchdown
    Said it the same way he did… Special season my a$s
    That type of thinking must be removed from the looker room… Alas I won’t result to name calling a fellow BUCS fan. It’s the offseason for crying out loud. We can speculate and throw all kind of wild scenarios… Well can’t we lol
    We had a better season than last year. But make no mistake I’m on the side of that looker room that believes this season, ultimately was a failure

    That side
    With that being said love JBF and love you posters.
    Makes my day, this site, this site right here is the shiznit
    Thanks Joe
    GO BUCS

  27. DallasBuc Says:

    Nothing wrong with a DC that knows both systems very well but the question is whether he can have more success running a 3-4 with the core defensive players we have. If he can, great! That is the risk that the organization may not be ready to take on at this crucial point in the development of this team. I am all for whatever scheme results in winning football in Tampa.

  28. Stpetebucsfan Says:

    This team is now ready to truly compete next…yes we need some more pieces and depth and I’m not saying we’ll win the SB next year…but we should be ready to make the playoffs and even a little run.

    My point is too many here get enamored by big names. We have talent in our organization.

    Everybody realizes continuity is a good thing…most see it from the players side but guess what…I do not want to wait four effing weeks next year before we can expect our defense to be up to speed. And in fairness it took Smitty a lot longer than four weeks to learn his players.

    At the end of the season we watch Tandy come in and think…where has that guy been all year…LVD starts going off because Smitty finally figures out how to use him. This is NOT a criticism of Smitty. IT is what it is.

    Glamour guys like Rex Ryan would need a big chunk of next season to not only get their players in synch with their D…but to truly know their players.

    Give me Hayes or Duffner.

    @DR As usual agree with your points. I’m wondering though if it’s a bit of a tossup…coach killing SD…or Jacksonville with a franchise QB who clearly has questions. Does he worry about Bortles killing his career. At least in SD he’s have a couple of years with a true franchise QB.

    Just some food for thought. Imagine all the variables Smitty must be considering.

  29. Tnew Says:

    San Diego and Mike Smith is a really good fit. Been saying this for a while. Now, Joe, I know you really wish Schwartz were here. Now your logic is even more proven

  30. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

    That is some food for thought.

  31. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

    WhatDaBuc the GMC haters love to take anything he says or does out of context. Back in the day when the Bucs beat the mighty 49ers and knocked Steve Young out of the game I was very excited. You know why, because the franchise had turned the corner and was on its way to what ultimately turned out to be a Super Bowl win! You know me, you and many other fans are excited again? Because they have turned the corner and may be in their way to greatness again! Obviously that is precisely what GMC meant and to deny that is silly. The dude goes out there and gives 100% and has played through injuries numerous times. Do you really think he doesn’t want to win? If anyone’s says yes to that their just being haters.

  32. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

    They’re not their

  33. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    @ TouchDownTampaBay

    LOL

    ..and how much is the GMC camp paying you to say all this nonsense about GMC??????

    Are you really trying to compare SAPP to GMC????? REALLY???? ARE F-IMG kidding me?????

    SAPP was a warrior…….one of the best DTs to ever play the game

    Unlike GMC who is always hurt, smiling in pregame pep talk rituals….and aka Mr Softie. …..

    I simply cannot believe you even went there?????

  34. Waterboy Says:

    I hate to see him leave the defense was just starting to come together. San Diego is a beautiful area to live but a bad organizing to work for just ask VJax.

    Is Wade Philips unemployed now that Denver has to replace Kubiak with a new HC?

  35. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    Wade Phillips would be my 1st choice!!!!!

    …….but I don’t think Denver will let him go anyways

  36. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

    WTF are you talking about Anthem???? Did I say a word about Sapp???

  37. WhatdaBUCisthis Says:

    I believe he wants to win yes @Touchdown
    Just not in the same context as Kwon is how I see it
    Damn yo
    He’s smiling
    And the ones I mentioned are very pissed
    That is what I see
    Don’t get me wrong I love GMC… Get him another lineman or two. One FA one draft OR trade him while there’s still value. Honestly I don’t care who suits up for our beloved BUCS. I’m loyal to the flag. With that being said I was just tossing out some wild scenario that could happen.
    I call on all BUCS fan to take to the airwaves n get Lynch talked about
    #47HOF

  38. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

    I said the team turned the corner then and has again now and you somehow accuse me of a comparison of Sapp and GMC????

  39. WhatdaBUCisthis Says:

    @Waterboy
    @BucsAnthem
    Damn correct me if I’m wrong BUT doesn’t Wade Phillips run a 3-4 D? Are you saying you’d be willing to change this defense?
    I’d be down with that

  40. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    @ TouchDownTampaBay

    You implied it by talking about steve young and that game……steve young got a concussion from SAPP knocking him down along with Hardy Nickerson……

    They were 0-5 at that time……hence the turn around cause they started winning games….

    No way in hell does that compare to Mr Softie GMC!

  41. Blake_bucsfan Says:

    Wade Phillips would be about the only 3-4 Coach I would actually be fine with. Dude has proven time and time again that he is among the upper echelon of NFL D Coordinators.

  42. WhatdaBUCisthis Says:

    And yes. Lmao you indirectly mentioned him did you not @touchdown Sapp was on that team

  43. PRBucFan Says:

    Not worried in the least, yea it will suck he won’t be calling the plays but the defensive system will remain the same.

    I fully expect a promotion from within if he ends up leaving.

    Koetter knew this would most-likely happen when he hired him, he’s prepared.

  44. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

    Wow dude you have quite an imagination!!! No comparison at all!!!! I said the franchise had turned the corner then and now. Made no mention of Sapp! You use your wild imagination to go there and then start berating me for something I didn’t even say. You may want to go out side to chill out a little. Don’t berate me for something I didn’t even come close to saying!

  45. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

    For what its worth, Jameis Winston is clearly the reason the franchise has turned the corner. GMC knows that and is enjoying the ride and likes the direction the team is heading. Of course that is what your guy Mr Softie (AKA multiple x pro bowler and all pro) meant when he said that.

  46. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

    LOL, so because Sapp was one of 53 guys on the team back then I was comparing Sapp to McCoy???? This site can be crazy at times.

  47. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    @ TouchDownTampaBay

    …..nice back pedaling bro

  48. PRBucFan Says:

    I read what you wrote and there was no mention of Sapp, direct or indirect ahahaha

    People crack me up on these boards

  49. WhatdaBUCisthis Says:

    @Blake
    Thank you. That’s what I’m talking bout. This defense isn’t solidified by any means. Tweak it and viola
    Again, to me the core is there, with a coach like Phillips, if be right happy with that… Damn it use Noah like Von. Bring in Poe use Kwon like Ray Lewis. Use and so on
    Hell I would love to see
    Gholston
    Poe
    GMC
    Noah
    insert new ILB
    Kwon
    David
    I’ll take my chances with that lineup
    Don’t care about who plays what technique nonsense. They all play multiple looks any during the game.
    Noah is now lined up next to run stuffing big Will!!! Noah will reach his full potential while truly utilizing big Will as a run stopping end and greatly benefit from having both on the field same side danger time

  50. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

    Back pedaling!!!!!!! Dude you a crazy!

  51. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

    @ Anthem this was a truly absurd response to my comment!

    ..and how much is the GMC camp paying you to say all this nonsense about GMC??????

    Are you really trying to compare SAPP to GMC????? REALLY???? ARE F-IMG kidding me?????

    SAPP was a warrior…….one of the best DTs to ever play the game

    I simply cannot believe you even went there?????

  52. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

    Like you, I cannot believe I went there!!! Oh wait, I didn’t!!!!!!

  53. DallasBuc Says:

    Blake- Philips has only featured a 3-4 in the NFL. There is no evidence he can be successful running a 4-3 here and there is certainly little to no chance of a scheme change.

  54. WhatdaBUCisthis Says:

    C’mon JOE
    What did I say
    @Dallas
    Of course there’s always a chance
    People hate change, I get it. But the 4-3 defense doesn’t automatically mean Superbowl

  55. SB with Jameis Says:

    They like their Offensive Coaching staff???????????
    Would Smitty take a job where THEY get to decide his offensive staff?????????????????????
    I wouldn’t think so.

  56. WhatdaBUCisthis Says:

    @Blake
    Thank you. That’s what I’m talking bout. This defense isn’t solidified by any means. Tweak it and viola

  57. M.Stevbobucfan Says:

    Hey buc fans..since Bradley didn’t end up in Cleveland as the media once suggested and haven’t sign with Washington yet maybe he is waiting to see if Smith leaves and then take the bucs DC job….and me personally. ..I think our buc ownership a lot better than Washingtons and if I am not mistaken. .I think Bradley was with the bucs before he went to Seattle as DC

  58. WhatdaBUCisthis Says:

    Damn JOE
    I don’t get what I said that would put a comment in timeout
    I didn’t curse didn’t belittle you, fans, players or the team. This blows cuz I think I have a valid comment
    C’mon man lol
    Sorry for whatever rules I broke

  59. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    @ WhatdaBUCisthis

    …….don’t worry about it

    You’re not the first………and you definitely won’t be the last

  60. Blake_bucsfan Says:

    I think they moderate every comment, and you only see the notification when you are posting very frequently.

  61. WhatdaBUCisthis Says:

    Anyway I’ll try this a different way
    I would like to see
    Gholston
    Poe
    GMC
    Noah
    newly signed ILB
    Kwon
    David
    Now you have Noah and Gholston on the field at the same time, on the same side. To me you utilize both of there strengths. These players play different positions during the game on the line, with line adjustments so move GMC to the other end. Now David is just slightly behind one of the fastest of the ball.
    I’ll take my chances with a coach like Phillips n a 3-4 defense. This defense isn’t complete yet so it can be tweaked.
    Just imagine a scenario where
    Noah= Von
    GMC=GMC
    Poe=Poe
    Kwon= Ray Lewis
    David= Terrell Suggs
    C’mon yo
    Somebody holla at ya boy

  62. WhatdaBUCisthis Says:

    I was trying to respond to you @Blake_bucsfan about us switcing defenses

  63. LakeLandBuc Says:

    The Chargers have or will interview Mike Smith, Terryl Austin, Sean McDermott, Matt Patricia, Dave Toub and there’s more to come.

  64. LakeLandBuc Says:

    Dirk Koetter should take a look at Mike McCoy as a possible OC.

  65. No Fly Zone Says:

    A 3-4 wouldn’t work with our personnel. First off, I have not heard of a 3-4 ILB being under 250 lbs, and I question if Kwon is even 230. Also, Lavonte isn’t a 3-4 OLB. He’s never been a pass rusher. All the sacks he gets is off of blitzes, and doesn’t have any pass rush moves. I haven’t seen a rip, swim, or even a spin move on a offensive tackle from him, ever. Also, Noah Spence only had 6 sacks. Not bad for a rookie at all, but he was neutralized in the last 4 games, and he relies too much on his speed rush.

    So, you’d have GMC, Poe and Gholston up front.
    Spence, Kwon, Lavonte and Jacquies Smith
    And your secondary doesn’t really change.

    You’ll get eaten up in the run game with the severe lack of size in your linebackers, and Gholston is only 280( most 3-4 DE’s are around 305). Instead of having a more flawed defense with a bunch of turnover, stick to a 4-3, and improve it with FA and Draft, and your star players can stay stars.( Kwon and David will not succeed in a 3-4)

  66. Waterboy Says:

    @WhatdaBUCisthis

    I think that Wade Phillips defensive scheme is classified as a 3-4 but there’s a lot more to it than whether a scheme is classified as a 3-4 or 4-3. I remember reading awhile back that a typical 3-4 scheme is a 2-gap scheme that requires a big nose tackle who can fill both gaps in the middle but I thought that Wade Phillips scheme was more of a 1-gap scheme which is fairly similar to a 4-3 scheme.

    I’m honestly not sure of all of the low level technical details that separates a 1-gap 3-4 from a 2-gap but I think that’s the key when trying to determine whether the current defensive personnel or not. I actually think Mike Smith also talked a lot about that last off-season when he was being asked a lot of questions about his scheme. So fitting into that scheme may not be as much of a transition as we might think.

    But I agree with PRBucFan I think they’ll more than likely end up filling that role from within. I think Jaye Hayes was brought in to eventually take over as the DC once Smith leaves.
