What The Punt Was That?

Losing-culture call by Dirk Koetter

Losing-culture call by Dirk Koetter

Somebody explain this to Joe. Why the hell did the Bucs punt on the Broncos’ 46-yard line on 4th-and-6 with 7:30 remaining and trailing 27-7?

Talk about fostering a losing culture!

That’s not what you do for the home fans. That’s not what you do in the opposing team’s territory. That’s not what you do on a rather manageable down and distance.

That’s not what you do when you invest in a quarterback with the No. 1 overall pick.

That’s not what you do when you have Mike Evans and you’re paying Vincent Jackson $10 million.

That’s not what you expect from an organization that fired conservative Lovie Smith.

It was waving a white flag — with two hands.

Back in Arizona, Dirk Koetter lectured media that Jameis Winston belonged staying in the game during a blowout, one in which he took a late beating. Why? Koetter said the captain goes down with his ship.

Fast-forward to today, and Koetter pulled the ball out of the captain’s in a move that in no way was designed to help the Bucs win the game.

Bad call, Coach. Very bad.

  1. Rod Munch Says:

It was brilliant… he knew there would be a TV timeout, would waste time – he was clearly playing for a rainout. If the game can get delayed long enough heck maybe the Broncos will just want to go home and forfeit.

  2. Pit Says:

What can he do when his “Captain” can’t complete a pass to save his life and his kicker is worse. This is one the players we need to clean up house.get rid of those captains that hold this team hostage.

  3. Kobe Faker Says:

I think nfl hc with the playcalling is too much on his plate

He is a mess and he doesnt know what to do. No consistancy no logic no plan

    No mas

  4. CLBucsFan Says:

Get ’em Joe!! This clown is making Lovie Smith look like Bill Bellicheat. I’m sure as hell not impressed by his coaching so far, especially at the end of the Rams game.

  5. rayjay1122 Says:

The Bucs Offense was zero dimensional. That is why they punted.

  6. Bculaw Says:

    This team has no talent.

  7. Rod Munch Says:

Bculaw – Actually the team has a lot of individual talent, they however have almost no depth depth and when someone like Conte is starting for you, then it means your secondary is remarkably bad.

  8. GOOD FOR NOW Says:

This was a poor performance by all. I blame the coaches for nothe realizing Sims is awful. I blame Jameis for lousy picks. I blame lame McCoy and did anyone else notice how much more effective McDonald was? I blame Conte who is slow, gullible and lazy. I blame the O Line which is a sieve. They play at home like cooters.

  9. Mike Johnson Says:

Don’t matter. The game was lost on 2 Jameis Winston turnovers early. And now Mr. Koetter get a taste of what its like to be a HC. last year, he hid behind Lovie saying, My offense is great. Now this year? Not only does his defense sucks, his pride and joy can’t stop the turnovers as QB. Coming up on KC’s hits from the 60’s..This is THE END..from the Doors.

    —-

Disagree..we do have many players that are very talented…

  11. Danthebucfan Says:

What if we switch Jameis to kicker and Roberto to QB. Hey, it’s worth a try.

  12. JonBuc Says:

Dork Kitten peaked Week One with what looks like a lucky win now…1-15 is completely in play.

  13. Redric Says:

It’s still early but it does seem that Koetter is in over his head. I’m still wondering how he kept Sims in over Rodgers most of the game. The Bucs have some of the worst coaching in the league. Koetter talks tough but at the end of the day he doesn’t deliver.

  14. passthebuc Says:

I always suspect coaching when a new head coach hires old cronies.

  15. Bob in Valrico Says:

no reason to think Jameis would be successful on 4th and 6 and Denver had been unloading on him most of the game. Maybe koetter wanted to preserve
his young QB for another day.Jameis forced a lot of passes, and we were fortunate some of them fell incomplete.

  16. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Why not give it to our best player……our punter.

  17. Mike Johnson Says:

They say..Cam Newton will not play next week due to a concussion. It won’t matter one bit. Backup QB’s tend to..lick their chops at the sight of our Bucs. There Stats all of a sudden rocket sky high. 1-4 here we come.
With the 1st pick of the 2017 draft, The tampa Bay Yucks select…….

  18. passthebuc Says:

Just remember folks, hockey is just around the corner. A great owner, A great GM and A Great coach.

Oh ya, they don’t talk about building a culture, they just did.

  19. Rod Munch Says:

There is another cell of lightning only about 6-7 miles from the stadium and it’s heading west. They said they were going to restart at 8:20, I doubt it.

  20. Pelbuc Says:

3-15 in the last 18 HOME games says it all! GM keeps picking the wrong players

  21. rayjay1122 Says:

@TBBF……Good one. I really needed the laugh. Thanks!!!

  22. Bird Says:

I agree. Our punter is a stud

  23. Rod Munch Says:

Kobe Faker Says – I think nfl hc with the playcalling is too much on his plate

    ——-

Yeah, that’s what a lot of us that said don’t fire Lovie was saying. Also Dirk’s offenses have historically came out of the gate strong, then normally went downhill from there, thus the reason he’d end up getting fired. I would stick with Dirk for at least a few years, you can’t change head coaches every other year and think you’re going to be a winner. Lovie was doing an OK job, assuming it wasn’t another team hiring Dirk (in that case I’d promote Dirk and fire Lovie if that was the only choice) then the team should have just stayed with what they were doing. Jamies was on the right track, and a defense with no NFL players in the secondary managed to finish 10th in the league in yards. Learning a new defense, which basically looks exactly like the old defense, but worse, well what was the point? Now Dirk can’t spend as much time with the offense and Winston, again that was what everyone liked about him. I said it at the time it was a bad move, it hurts Winston by taking away Dirk from him – and until we get some NFL players in the defensive backfield it won’t matter who the coach is. VH3 might end up being great, but he can’t do it alone, not when Grimes and Conte are starting.

  24. Tampa Tony Says:

That was a very Lovie move

  25. GhostofSchiano Says:

Leave it to me to pour on some optimism. Yes, we might lose at Carolina Monday night but then again we might not. Then we have the bye week. Injured playees return, more practice and rest. Then we get to the easier part of the schedule. NO – twice, Atl – again, Chicago, San Fran. Very winable games with all starters returned. Admittadly when you all saw the schedule wasnt 1-4 or 2-5 by the bye week not the likely record? We can even this up and be on the plus side by Thanksgiving…pass the potatoes and sweet tea

  26. Rod Munch Says:

I’d like to proudly say when the schedule came out I said the team would be 1-4 to start the year and all the people begging for Lovie to get fired would be saying Dirk is a bust, he must get fired, so on and so forth.

    It’s always the same thing.

  27. Phred Says:

Jameis is okay. Good QB learning as he goes. Sims is a third down back, we don’t have a starting RB with DM out. Sims is too tentative about hitting the hole and his “dancy feet” are simply wasted seconds. O-line is slightly below average but looking good to grow in the next season or two. TEs average. WR below average, Mike Evans is nice to have when he’s working but V-Jax looks like he’s got some chronic pain or has given up. Humphries is a 4th or 5th receiver working as a third. Play calling brilliant at times and inexplicable at times.

  28. Rod Munch Says:

Guys Winston is playing .500 ball when the games aren’t getting weather delays, keep that in mind before you slit your wrists.

  29. Bob in Valrico Says:

7 of the last 8 games against good defenses and Jameis hasn’t played well in any of them. This year his play has been brutal against these good defenses.
his ineffectiveness after first drive wore out the d-line who were playing very well after McCoy went down.

  30. Rod Munch Says:

Yeah Bob, he only threw for 400 yards and 3 TDs versus a Rams team that destroyed Wilson and knocked Palmer out of the game… and he played badly today versus a team that made Brady, Newton and Luck look like rookies.

LOL! Such drama queens. Hey Bob go find your buddy Neil, I hear there’s a bathroom stall with your names written on it.

  31. Frank Pillow Says:

Inexcusable and gutless, Dirk. While his overall game management (particularly at the end of the first half this week and last) is piss poor, this team is utterly devoid of speed and talent. Beyond Alexander, McCoy, Marpet, David, Jaboo, Evans and McCoy, who the hell is Grade A NFL caliber? We still have a ton of Grade B, C and D guys starting. Our drafts have been lauded, but they don’t matter if it doesn’t translate to WINS. This year’s class is unspectacular to say the least. Our FAs under Licht have been hot garbage, save Hawely. Best thing to happen is for a lightning bolt to burn RJS to the ground- light this pile of sh*t! We don’t win there anyway. Dirk is right about culture…but he’s wrong not to point the finger back at the GM, and Ownership.

Nothing in this town stunk worse than the Bolts before the Messiah arrived. The Messiah understood the type of people that needed to be purged and replaced (at all levels) to achieve sustained excellence.

Someone dressed in a gorilla suit wearing an All Lives Matter t-shirt ran onto the field at the Bears game. HAHAHAAAAAAAAAA…

  34. Rod Munch Says:

Conte is going for 100 yards in penalties.

  35. Bob in Valrico Says:

Denver D dismantled brady and Newton,so its a learning session for Jameis. No shame,he was trying the degree of pressure has humbled more experienced QB’s than him.

  36. Rod Munch Says:

Is Dirk going to use his timeouts this week?

I think he just did, he actually learned from last week. Congrats for knowing what an 8 year old playing Madden knows.

  37. Rod Munch Says:

Time for Dirk to punt again.

  38. Rod Munch Says:

Oh wait, Dirk was bailed out of another punt by a call against Denver.

  39. Rod Munch Says:

Dirk will probably punt on 3rd down, that way if there’s a muffed snap he can try punting again.

  40. Sell this team to me Says:

After years of losing our team still has excuses. The best one yet “Getting better everyiday”

  41. Bob in Valrico Says:

    @rod Munch
Totally not interested in the bathrooms you frequent or why.

  42. RealityCheck Says:

If it helps, I booed them through the 4th down and into the break. Pathetic losers.

  43. D-Rome Says:

Dirk deserves to be criticized as heavily as Lovie Smith was for his “play-it-safe” tactics heading into halftime. The punt in that situation is a worse call. It’s a cowards decision.

  44. Rod Munch Says:

Joe Buc Fan told me once Lovie was gone that Dirk would really open things up – and all those bad play it safe calls were Lovie’s fault. LOL! It’s almost like Joe has as much knowledge about this team as your average messageboard poster.

  45. 911bucs Says:

4th and 43 hahaha is that some sort of record??

  46. Ed Kerber Says:

It is not all Jameis. Time to dumpster dive to get some WR with speed go to Az and NemE practice squad first. Do Vjax a favor and trade him to Buffalo. Cut Conte and make Grimes a Safety. Trade sims for whatever you get. Go to Buffalo, Eagles and Dallas practice squad for slime help. Get rid of B Meyers and bring in baby gronk. Also get Mack Brown Jr and Wilder Jr from practice squads. Get rid of as many over 30 late wrong draft picks. Replace with Practice squad players from top teams when possible.

  47. ed Says:

The player’s will not play hard for this coach, because of what he did to coach Smith. They will have injuries and found other reason not to play. Also six sacks,i guess that is the qb fault. Please go out and get some talent and a GM that will not let the media tell him what to do.

  48. 911bucs Says:

Is that a culture change with all the brawling at the end of the game.

  49. BUC IT Says:

I just have no clue why we punted in that situation….. There are no moral victories in the NFL. We were down 3 scores with 7 min to go. Ridiculous.

  50. sho nuff Says:

    …because they suck?

  51. MadMax Says:

The Suckaneers! Embrace it peeps, is what it is. We’re still a long ways away.

  52. Rod Munch Says:

Ed – Simms is one of the best 3rd down backs in the game, it’s the coaches screwing up here, he is not an everydown guy – and the coaches shouldn’t pretend he is. Most everything else I agree with but instead of Grimes I’d move Banks to safety, he has the size and skillset for that. Grimes is just a waste, he’s not very good – just like he wasn’t very good at Miami last year, not sure why they thought a guy on the wrong side of 30 would suddenly get a lot better. VJ is done, he’s old and slow, if anyone would give up anything they should take whatever they can get as if we needed an old and slow WR who is washed up Roddy White is always available for nothing.

  53. DallasBuc Says:

4-43 after a long weather delay. Yikes!

  54. ptwalk Says:

I believe Lovies last yr team would beat this years team. From what I’ve seen so far.

  55. Rod Munch Says:

Those elite Bucs defenses used to do this to everyone – it’s what elite defenses do in particular to young QBs. The Bucs used to embarrass Vick, make him look like he had no idea how to play the game, that’s what happens when you play an elite defense. The sky isn’t falling ladies, anyone that had any sense thought the Bucs would be 1-4 after 5 games, it’s after the bye that you worry if the team looks lost. Also with Carolina playing as bad as they are you can’t assume it’s an automatic L next week, however on the road it probably will be. 1-4 is exactly what I thought, through one of the worst stretches of defenses a young QB could go against – this was all expected if you know anything about the game.

  56. Rico Says:

2008 – Awww, so close – maybe next year
    2009 – Maybe next year
2010 – Awww, so close – maybe next year
    2011 – Maybe next year
    2012 – Maybe next year
    2013 – Maybe next year
    2014 – Maybe next year
    2015 – Maybe next year
2016 – Move ’em to London

  57. Rod Munch Says:

ptwalk – Well it’s hard to know for sure since the Bucs are missing so many players, but yes last years team would destroy this team without it’s RB and missing a bunch of linemen and the awful play of Conte and Grimes, although in fairness both were awful last year too, just Grimes was with the Dolphins.

After the bye the Bucs get back Martin, hopefully VJ who normally starts slow comes to life, and most importantly the schedule gets significantly easier. Lets see where we are in say week 9, then we can panic if the team looks lost and helpless, but with Conte playing, come on – that alone tells you everything.

  58. mike10 Says:

Embarrassed to be a Bucs fan.. this franchise has been a disgrace since they dumped the roster when Raheem came on. You wonder why there is a losing culture, it’s because they any culture they had packing.

  59. Dewey Selmon Says:

Hey Rico, maybe next year will always be better than London. Don’t say that..

  60. sho nuff Says:

    Culture 101:
No more player or coaches shows…it depresses your fan base and to be honest I want assassins…not smiling charley’s talking about eating 2 buckets of chicken in front of your room mate sans pants…or a coach that has NO interest in being there.

No celebrating for ANYTHING on the field during and after the game. until you are able to impose your will on an opponent..you make the play and walk away…you come off like a guy that just dunked on an 8 y/o and don’t deserve the accolade..period

Unload self proclaimed “leaders” and “blessed be”‘rs…

And for god’s sake go Rocky IV…develop a bunker mentality go to Siberia and get hard…the reason why half this team is limping is because you’re soft mentally…look inward, understand presence and START COMING OFF YOUR FRONT FOOT FOR A CHANGE!

  61. Daggers Says:

It’s been a nice run. I be been watching this since the beginning. I have a bobble head and a belt that I got from my Father in 76. I’m done with football. I’m done with the lack of effort. And carrying! Good buy and good luck. I will never watch another game!

  62. Rod Munch Says:

Yeah sho, showing emotion after a good play – that’s the sign of a loser who doesn’t get it. LOL!

Where do you people come from? The team lost to the defending super bowl champs that have an elite defense, calm down ladies.

Rod not all ladies get their panties all wadded up..I don’t…not sure I am a lady at times..my truck driver mouth would say otherwise..

But I do agree with you throughout all the posts…

It was Denver, now the schedule will get a bit easier..

  67. Tampabaybucfan Says:

This was a really bad game for Koetter’s playcalling and apparently, his gameplan.
He maybe called 1 screen to Sims….and that was late in the game. Humphries was a non-factor perhaps because his number wasn’t called…..we needed some trick plays along with an end around.
Our lack of speed at WR is really starting to hurt us. I’m starting to think that we would be better off with Russell Shepard than Vjax.

And, it’s time to stop making excuses for Jameis…..he must become more accurate especially early in games.

  68. cometowin2 Says:

Lost a lot of respect today for Coach Koetter. He quit on his team. He hit the nail on the head when he said he is the one that has to fix the culture. Not the way to fix it, coach.

  69. Rod Munch Says:

Yeah sho, players showing emotion is why they lost. Haha… I never get how you bores enjoy anything. The 2002 Bucs were one of the biggest trash talking emotional teams you’ll ever see. Winning has nothing to do with not showing emotion you dope.

  70. Gt40bear Says:

Face it, they are what they are! Doesn’t matter who the GM or coaching staff is, doesn’t matter what hideous uniform you wrap them in, doesn’t matter how many seemingly good drafts they have, this team is stuck in SUCK! Except for a brief shining fluke, this team is 40 years of effing SUCK! Browns South…well maybe that is insulting the Browns a little too much!

  71. Daggers Says:

    Good luck looses,!

Good luck loser’s You week as SOB’ s don’t know how to fight! You will all fail in everything because you don’t have it and never will!

  72. cometowin2 Says:

I’m going to try to not quit on you and start thinking about the draft and a new head coach that doesn’t quit on his team and the fans.

  73. Dex Fields Says:

ROD MUNCH..you’re absolutely right but the Bucs wasn’t competitive at all.The play from themy wasn’t regular garage but hot garbage.Charles Simms is nothing as a runner! The organization in whole failed Winston..no help and he is trying his hardest! The drop off from Evans at receivers is so embarrassing and also Doug Martin. The GM should be fired for not evaluating talent on this team. This is a joke..the head coach is getting out coach for three weeks in a row!

  74. Bob in Valrico Says:

Too bad jameis had to endure that.Once you get behind they pin their ears back. There was a point that I thought the Denver D was hot and winded. But the offense sputtered and wasn’t on the field long enough to give our defense a rest.Even though I thought our D line played hard and looked better than the last two weeks.Safeties still a problem.

  75. Rod Munch Says:

Dex Fields – Simms is fine for his role, but they’re not playing him in his role. In fact the team would be much better off lining him up outside and playing more a WR from time to time, he’s great at catching the ball and running on 3rd downs – he’s proved that, but he’s just not a starting NFL RB. Not a diss, he’s really good at what he does, but the coach needs to figure that out, it’s why I hated when they did the injury release with Mike James, since he’d be the started right now if they could sign him, but because of the way they cut him they can’t resign him for 6 weeks I think. You’re right about the rest of the talent, but that’s been the issue with the huge turnover and terrible drafting prior to Licht, they have no depth – and Licht being terrible at picking FA’s has also hurt.

  76. briandorry55 Says:

Just because you don’t want to throw any blame at your golden boy quarterback who can do no wrong, and the absolutely dreadful offensive line that you defend at all costs…doesn’t mean everything is Koetter’s fault. Guess what? If Jameis didn’t put his team in a big hole again by making dumb throws…and if the offensive line could block someone…ANYONE…we wouldn’t have been in that position to start with.

  77. Simpleasthat Says:

Can we at least suspend the “Americas Quarterback” phrase until he develops beyond a turnover machine?

  78. America's Commenter Says:

Koetter doesn’t seem to understand basic football strategies in the 4th quarter. It shows he has zero faith in Winston, and rightfully so, because he has been awful.

The Bucs were clearly ready for the Falcons and clearly not ready for the Cardinals, Rams, or Broncos. Could it be the familiarity that Koetter and Smith had with the Falcons roster? Could it be they need a whole offseason to put in a proper game plan?

This team is worse than we all thought, they will be lucky to win 2 more games this season.
