Joe talks to Falcons coach Dan Quinn

Defensive first-year Falcons head coach Dan Quinn has studied plenty of running backs, and Joe asked him today for a scouting report on Doug Martin.

Quinn served up some meat.

“The strength that he plays with, the feet that go on contact. Like sometimes with a runner, when you get to the contact, it happens and he goes down. [With Martin,] it’s just the opposite,” Quinn said.

“The feet are going and they’re alive on contact and yeah, man, do we have a lot respect for him. You really have to your tackling down when you’re playing a back like Doug. Because not only can he get his feet going on contact, he’s got enough explosiveness to make a jump cut, you know, to make you miss. When you have those combinations, which [Falcons running back Devonta Freeman] does as well, it’s a real challenge as a tackler.”

Pretty impressive stuff. Quinn did a great job explaining the drive coming from Martin. Has a Bucs running back run this hard since Mike Alstott?

Martin’s been damn fun to watch.

Mr. Martin has shown some moves this season that have been downright tantalizing. His cutting ability reminds me of Cadillac in his prime but he has more power than Caddy. The Freeman / Martin match-up this week would be premier football if not for the Bucs woeful showing(the last 10+ years) Good luck Doug!

Quinn’s job got easier with Jackson not playing. The box is going to be stacked to stop the Bucs running game.

Credit to our O Line and to Doug’s ability this year. He’s already been running very well against boxes that are stacked to stop him. I also think if their defense sleeps on Dontae Dye, that will be a mistake. Guy has the wheels to beat defenders deep and Jameis has the arm to get the ball there.

The key for our offense will be how we handle the stacked box. In a perfect world our Jumbo package should open some running lanes for Martin. But, beyond Martin, as the saying goes: “What else ya got?”.

The “What else ya got?” will be a lot of pass targets for 1) Evans, 2) Sims and 3) Myers/Dye/Stocker/Humphries(?) or Hall(?).

I don’t think the Falcons are worried about getting beat by our 3rd options. Nevertheless, any “successful” targeting of our 3rd options may be the key to sustaining drives.

Sadly, this game will turn on stopping JJ and Freeman. ATC, stopping Freeman may mean a lot of 1 on 1 with JJ. That leaves their 3rd options running free in our well toasted secondary.

    Oh, Brother..SMH…!!!

Let’s hope that our ST can contribute 2TD’s. Otherwise….2-5.

glad to see martin playing so well. he is obviously auditioning for 31 real nfl squads no way he will want to resign with bucs unless they do the right thing and get rid of Lovie.

Doug Martin is playing like a straight up..BEAST this year. Kudos to and for him. If only our dam Defense would..could….
