The Right Medicine For The Bucs’ Defense

October 18th, 2015
The right medicine for struggling defensive playcaller Lovie Smith.

The right medicine for struggling defensive playcaller Lovie Smith.

There’s a reason Joe drank so much beer today. Suffering through four quarters of Redskins-Jets football will do that to a man.

Joe can’t see a good reason why the Bucs should lose to this sorry Skins team next Sunday.

Hell, the Bucs won there last year easily, with a far worse quarterback, Josh McCown.

How sweet would that be? Imagine the Bucs leaving the nation’s capital with a 3-3 record.

Joe watched the Redskins offer nothing of quality today, other than on special teams. In their 34-20 loss, Washington’s final, late touchdown was a blocked punt in the end zone and their return and coverage teams were solid. But Kirk Cousins was inaccurate. And there was no energy to the offense, especially with a 1st-and-goal situation they couldn’t punch in late. Washington managed 17 carries for 34 yards on the day.

On defense, ugh, the Skins offered up gaping holes all day long, and you could see the crappy effort at times. True loafs.

And best of all for Bucs fans, the Skins seemed very challenged when it comes to covering a screen pass. Their pass rush? Zero sacks on Ryan Fitzpatrick, who completed 19-of-26 passes.

If the Bucs offense is for real, and the O-line truly has turned a corner, the Bucs should be able to move the chains consistently in Washington. Remember, the Bucs’ D-line won this battle big time last year. Joe suspects Sunday’sgame will come down to whether Lovie Smith can make the adjustments — personnel and tactical — to set his defense up for success.

Man. 3-3. Been a while since we’ve seen that. Go!!!

  2. tiny tim Says:

    @ joe

Were ever able to determine how someone could post under my screen name?

  3. Charlie V Says:

I was liking what I was reading until the last sentence. This team has had to overcome Lovie’s inability to make adjustments in the past. If the defense needs Lovie to be prepared and make in game adjustments then rack up another “L”. It looks like another high scoring game if we are to win. Bet the over.

  4. Bucnut2 Says:

Skins didn’t look good but this is no pushover game for us. Cousins is the kind of QB that we routinely make look like a star and early on Skins were getting QB pressure. If JW is the bad JW, we will get killed. If he is the good JW, we have a chance.

  5. DefenseRules Says:

@Joe … “But Kirk Cousins was inaccurate.”

Seems like you said a similar thing last year Joe about several backup QBs that we faced, then they had All-Pro days and we got our butts whooped.

On any given Sunday any team in the NFL can beat any other team I’m convinced. Show up thinking it’ll be a cake-walk and you’ll get trounced. Like you, I’m convinced that our Bucs are more talented than the Redskins, but I’ve seen these same Bucs not ‘show up’ already this year. Don’t want to see that again.

  6. DB55 Says:

Speaking of personnel decisions, do I understand correctly that this kid rawley was on the bucs but got cut? First he’s look like Doug Martin, runs like him too and he has a 5.6 ypr. We cut him bc of Sims?

It seems like every week we find yet another example of just how bad mr. Smith is at building a team.

  7. ElioT Says:

I’m a big Lavonte David fan, but damn I wish we picked Kuechly too.

    That dude is a leader.

    Siege this!

    Go Sucs!

  8. Bucnut2 Says:

Hey Joes- you said Cousins was inaccurate. His completion % today was 58.1%, JW for the year is 56%. Have never heard you call him inaccurate????

Inaccurate isn’t about completion percentage. Get your head out of the box score. –Joe

When exactly are you going to become a Bucs fan?

  12. Bucnut2 Says:

Been one since 1992. Just can’t stand the double standard. I am rootign for JW. Just can’t stand Joes and the rest of the media being really with the entire team except. JW. He’s just not that good yet. I think and hope he will be, but not there yet. Just hoping joes will get real at some point!

  13. Capt.Tim Says:

I hope we can beat Washington. Its definitely something we can do

Tiny Troll- still trying to deny being a hater??
Let me save Joe the effort, heres how someone else could post under your name

Another Reader, who is a Voodoo priest, cast a spell on you, took over your body.
Then, for last few months, has written hateful post about Jameis and the Bucs!!
I’d be more upset about what he may have done with the wife!!

Or, you are a hateful Troll, who is now trying to jump on the bandwagon.

Or meybe somebody hacked your account – although I find that the least likely possibility

  14. Bucnut2 Says:

    real

  15. DefenseRules Says:

Joe, sure does sound like you think the Skins game is in the bag and that Washington is a bad team led by a lousy QB. Just looked up boxscores from their first 5 games, and I’m seeing something totally different.

As for Cousins, thru the first 5 games he’s 126-for-185 passing (68%) for 1,224 yds with 5 TDs and 6 INTs. Interestingly, those 6 INTs came in the Skins 3 losses (2 INTs in each game).

In the 2 games they won (Rams & Eagles) he was outstanding – 23/27 for 203 yds against the Rams (38 mins TOP), and 31/46 for 290 yds against the Eagles (41 TOP). That’s 74% passing, against 2 decent defenses. And he controlled the clock in the process.

In the Skins 3 losses, Cousins was still very good (72-for-112 for 64%) but he threw 2 INTs in each game, and that made the difference in the outcome. TOP wasn’t as good as in their wins, but they still averaged 32 mins time-of-possession.

What’s scary to me is that the Redskins seem to play the same type of dink-and-dunk game that we saw from the Titans in our first game. And we know how that turned out. Hope we don’t count our chickens before they hatch.

It’s almost like the guy that wrote this article is a bucs fan. ……bucnut2 gtfo

  17. Buc1987 Says:

BucYeah…exactly. It will get to the point that we should just ignore the troll. That day is coming soon.

  18. Bucnut2 Says:

Buc yeah- thanks for the offer, think I’ll pass

  19. Bucnut2 Says:

1987- thanks for your input. Ignore if you want. Im ok with that. It’s amazing to me that the only JW homers can now post here. Sorry the rest of you prefer to bury your heads. Try watching some teams other than the Bucs and maybe you’ll see what I see. Well maybe not.

  20. Bucnut2 Says:

I enjoy reading what you all post and offering my opinion. Varying views make for a healthy debate. Don’t you think?

  21. Buc1987 Says:

Of course it does, especially when the other clown is so far off base with his comments, to the point of hatred.

  22. Tampa Tony Says:

Lovie is the coach so Cousins will throw for 450 yards and 5 TDs. Loser Lovie will then say we are 9 players away and are close

  23. Bucnut2 Says:

1987- if you are talking about me. I don’t hate anyone. I would say that name calling borders on hatred. you are good at searching the archives. Please tell me a time I have called anyone on this site any name. I don think you will find one. I view this as civil, respectful debate. I would like to believe that some on this site are able to view it that way as well.

  24. Bucnut2 Says:

I would also say that I TRULY hope JW is successful. It will set our franchise back 5 years or more if he is not. I will also say that IMO his game has serious flaws. His delivery is slow, his footwork is bad and he is too aggressive given his NFL skill level. HE was sold to ALL of us as pro ready, which IMO, he is not there yet. I hope he gets there.

  25. Buc1987 Says:

I would truly say I don’t believe you nor do I care.

  26. Bucnut2 Says:

ok then please stop addressing me. Thank you for you time. Be well my friend.

  27. Buccfan37 Says:

The Bucs are ahead of Seattle in the playoff race having played one less game. Carolina is better than Atlanta, I picked them to win the division before the season started. Whichever QB to Olsen seems tough to contain. This could be the eventual NFC Super Bowl representative. I do think the Bucs are a year away from beating them in the division. I was impressed with Landry Jones coming in for Vick and leading the Steelers in his first NFL action to a win over the Cardinals.

  28. Bucnut2 Says:

    Panthers very impressive today.

  29. Buc1987 Says:

I think Hawaiian Buc just about summed it up on draft night.

I hope all the people crying about the pick do stop being a Bucs fan. If you have season tickets, give them up. Go be an idiot and a crybaby. Nobody cares. You are meaningless, and we don’t need idiots like you cheering for the Bucs.

  30. Buc1987 Says:

    Except I’ll add this….

We don’t need idiots like you cheering for the Bucs and trashing our rookie QB every time some analyst, player or coach says something good about him.

  31. Bucnut2 Says:

1987- wow. very classy post. congratulations!

  32. Bucnut2 Says:

1987- not sure why you are so angry??? Hiding something???

  33. pelbuc Says:

Not to be a Debbie Downer, but last year after the bye, Bucs got throttled by Ravens at home so until secondary gets fixed, I don’t feel confident. BTW, Kuechly is so much better than LVD. Carolina has a solid all around team that plays inspired. Credit to their GM and coaches.

  34. Bucnut2 Says:

Pelbuc- great post. totally agree about the secondary. Also regretfully agree on Panthers

  35. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Obviously we are not the only team struggeling to contain Greg Olsen……Seattle was torched….Panthers look pretty good.
Maybe we aren’t really that bad….we will see Sunday….we should win this game…doesn’t mean we will.
I know some will diagree…but we are a better offense with ASJ….hope he returns.

  36. Bucnut2 Says:

TBBF- agree on ASJ. he is a big time weapon

  37. Bucnut2 Says:

TBBF- i think we are about even with the skins. All on JW, good we win, bad we lose

  38. Tackleblockwin Says:

I actually enjoyed the bye week. Nice to go two weeks in a row without a loss. The Skins will be no easy win. There is no such thing as an easy win for our Bucs. Gotta bring it 4 quarters and pressure Cousins. I’ve seen worse QBs beat us.

  39. Buc1987 Says:

Bucnut2…you said you own your comments, now own them. Continue to trash our rookie QB as you please. Which is whenever you get a chance to. If he proves you wrong and he will, I’ll be there to remind you. That is until you admit that you were wrong to trash our rookie QB every chance you get. That day will come.

  40. Tiny Tim Says:

    @n Capt TimTim

You are the freaking troll you stupid idiot. You say I have been spewing hatred for the past month(s) about JW which makes you look even dumber than you are. Here is an article this week October 12th where ironically I came to Buc1987’s defense as it related to JW . Then two days later I am all of a sudden the biggest Winston basher on this site. Yes that would make you an idiot. You will not find post in my name outside a couple of days ago where I bashed Jameis. Yes you are the freaking troll.

  44. Buc1987 Says:

Tiny Tim ..I really am sorry I caused all this trouble man. I had no idea, like I said before I thought you were a JW fan. Then this imposter guy starts trashing JW to me under your name. We went back and forth a little bit, he pissed me off. Then you came into the thread the next day and started talking like Jameis was the man. The imposter and I had just got through arguing with eachother the day before. So it was still fresh in my mind.

Buttnut0 on the other hand is a whole different situation. He lives to talk shyte about our rookie QB any chance he gets. I think that was well proven yesterday.

  45. Buccfan37 Says:

Mariota who? Old news, what relevance does he even hold for Bucs fans at this point? The Bucs don’t play against the Titans again for four years. That may as well be the distant future.

  46. Buc1987 Says:

Buccfan37…as soon as JW has a bad week and Mariota has a good one, you will hear about it from the Clingers Club. YES there are still Buc fans clinging to Mariota and YES they are still on this site too.

You know that guys that say stuff like : “See Joe I told you we picked the wrong guy, Winston’s going to be a bust.”

Those people. Are you telling me that you never read stuff like that over the last month?

I disagree at best they are very similar IF kuechley might have a slight, tiny, minute edge. However, I completely agree that Riverboat Ron is a better coach and the real man behind the Chicago 2 defense. Proof is in the pudding.

Here are more articles where I back Jameis. I will let you continue to be the troll that you are though. Again, find the articlesof me bashing Jameis outside a couple of day ago. Obviously it was someone else.. Buc1987 asked me who did I piss off that would want to steal my name. I think I found him Buc1987. It is the troll Capt Tim.

Again you don’t find it odd that the only time I “supposedly” spewed hatred was a couple of days ago out of nowhere? Oh and I am still waiting on you to show me where I talked bad about Jameis for the past months. I will admit, I do not read every day like most of you or I would have caught this fake when it was first happening.

  54. Buccfan37 Says:

87… I think you can rest easy in your Winston support. I don’t even see why you really care about opposing views. Yeah I’ve read some such comments, but it has mostly died out lately. I don’t even give them a second thought.

  55. Buc1987 Says:

Buccfan37…well that part is easy. I can answer you why I care. ESPN and the NFL still care. In fact ESPN does a week by week comparison of the 2 on their website every week. NFL still does articles and stories comparing the 2. The Bucs “fans” on this site that still talk up Mariota like he’s a football god all while trashing their own rookie QB still care about the 2. Joe still cares about comparing the 2 as he writes articles about them rubbing it in the Winston haters face.

So ya see I’m not the only one.

In the past I would just say, he’s a rookie give him time. That wasn’t good enough for them. This has been going since the draft, training camp, preseason, and into the regular season. It’s not so much their disagreement with selecting Winston, it’s the words they use to describe his play.

You say most of them are not around much anymore, but I don’t think that’s so. I think they are still around and read this site as well. It’s not even just on this site. I have an aunt and uncle that call me up every week telling me that the Bucs picked the wrong guy and why they did.

Like I said. I’m not the only one. I bet it happens all over the bay area. I bet co-workers mess with eachother too around the job if they wanted one or the other. I don’t think it will let up anytime soon either. If Mariota went out and had a good game today, you’d see those idiots in here.

Oh I haven’t really explained why I care about it all have I? Well that part is easy too. I’m a Noles fan, I watched this kid since 2013. I not only watched the kid play, but relished the thought that someday he might be a Buc. I never thought it would happen though and now it has. So when someone runs their mouth or keyboard about the kid, it’s like stepping on my dream come true.

It was long, but I hope that explains everything….

  56. bucsbedabest Says:

@DB55 Says – So if you could trade Luke Kuechly for Lavonte David straight across today, you would not? Really?

The Panthers/Seahawks game was as good and intense of a game as anyone will see. The stinking Panthers are for real. As I watched the game I kept thinking..we had these guys, if not for the INT, fumble, missed FG and that freak play where Chris Conte forced a fumble that went into a Panthers hand for a TD. Despite the setbacks the score was 17-10 in the 3rd before the freak play hit. Then you have the Saints who beat an undefeated Dixie Chicks. Houston? Not to shabby today as well. Other than the opening day debacle this team could easily be 4-1 at the bye week. Encouraging to say the least. There are rumors circulating that Colt McCoy may start for Kirk Cousins next week. The Redskins were down six starters Sunday, including two offensive linemen and receiver DeSean Jackson. They ran for just 34 yards on 17 carries. The Skins are dysfunctional. Good roster, bad coaching and QB play is killing em. There defense has been having trouble defending the run, which bodes well for Doug Martin and the Bucs. Both of there CB who are still injured and the offensive line is a problem as well. Sounds like a team ready for a comeback?

  57. Buc1987 Says:

    Bucs 24 Skins 13

  58. Buc1987 Says:

Fun fact for the night owls and the people out west.

The Redskins have been outscored 46-3 in the third quarter of games this season.

  59. WalkdaPlank Says:

Bucs can beat the Skins. If Winston does right again by not turning the ball over, and the O-line plays hard, all the defense has to do is come up with a couple stops. There’s no excuse why this offense should not produce with all its weapons. Maybe a couple rookie mistakes from the 3 starters, but production nonetheless.

  60. DB55 Says:

    Bucbedabest

Unfair question, I’m bias. The LVD of 2 years ago no but today’s LVD nah not really. 8tkls n an int works for me but again he’s my favorite player.

As for the rest, I think you’re over simplifying it. Consider this, the biggest defensive play last week, mcdougles int, was caused by Jenkins making a mistake.

  66. Pick6 Says:

not sure you can compare the bucs defense with the challenges the Jets’ scheme throws at a young QB. this is still the same scheme from week 1, where the holes are consistently in the same spots and the QB just has to hit the window. cousins will complete somewhere around 70% of his passes. recent history says we can stop the run, but unless we mix up our looks against the pass and can hang with opposing WRs when we drop into man coverage, we could easily give up 4 TDs like we did to Bortles. the game will likely come down to turnovers forced, and thankfully cousins has shown some generosity at key times there. it’s winnable but so was the Texans game. Victory requires us to not shoot ourselves in the foot, but in recent years that’s been too much to ask most sundays
