Did Dan Quinn Take A Shot At Gerald McCoy?

Gerald McCoy put his foot down last night

Rookie Falcons head coach Dan Quinn has former Buccaneers Adrian Clayborn and Raheem Morris in key roles on his team.

So, naturally, Quinn was asked about those guys yesterday during his conference call with Tampa Bay media.

Joe was there listening and participating, and Joe found a Quinn comment about Clayborn to be quite curious.

Considering Gerald McCoy got a tongue lashing from some media types and fans for being photographed with an exaggerated grin alongside Kirk Cousins immediately following Sunday’s groin-stomp loss in Washington, Quinn’s timing was, um, interesting.

“I think you guys know AC well,” Quinn said of Clayborn. “He hasn’t lost that toughness that you guys remember. He’s still not smiling, so that’s a good thing for a defensive lineman (laughter). He has the same attitude and mindset to go. Probably where we’re featuring him a little bit differently is we’re playing him inside in our nickel package and a little bit at defensive end.”

Was Quinn taking a swipe at McCoy? Maybe.

McCoy went on a passionate rant last night on the Buccaneers Radio Network. He wasn’t asked about the now infamous smile, but McCoy called it “the elephant in the room” and advised fans that he is a man of God and will always show good sportsmanship, congratulate opponents and greet friends like Kirk Cousins with a smile.

McCoy says he gives everything he has physically on and off the field for the Bucs, and he believes in being a good role model for the kids of Tampa Bay — and that includes shaking hands with opponents after games.

As for the big, toothy grin, McCoy said that’s him, and that part of him won’t change.

How dare McCoy smile after a loss! The second he became an NFL player is the second we controlled his emotions, thoughts, statements and where he is allowed to go on his off days.

And he best not take an actual vacation in the off-season. There’s game film to review!

  2. MadMax Says:

Look, he’s made it. He’s a multimillionaire riding high on his new multimillionaire contract. He’s going to do what he wants. He’s not going to have the dog in him to be havoc on the field, so dont ever expect that. He’ll be mediocre and this is what we paid for, so expect that!

Theres a serious problem with our D in Tampa! They dont have enough DOG in them to get after it….simple as that!

  3. ndog Says:

It is not about smiling to much is about producing to little. And then the smiling pisses everybody off after you see him do nothing the entire game.

  4. Ben the GA Buc Says:

I appreciate good sportsmanship. But I don’t appreciate it when the leader of a defense that was mostly responsible for the collapse of a 24 point lead looks giddy while speaking to the QB who led the comeback over his team.

Looking at that pic of McCoy and Cousins, that’s just all kinds of wrong.

  5. CreamsicleBananaHammock Says:

Honestly, I’m torn on McCoy. The guy is really the only real player we have on the DL so he’s not getting any help. I also don’t think you hear his name enough called during games for him to be considered elite. There’s certain DL in this league that simply make plays all over the field.

Really, I want DL on my team that had two career options — chasing quarterbacks or strip club bouncer. McCoy definitely does not fit into that category

  6. Tampa Tony Says:

McCoy the more you talk the less I like you and your loser attitude

  7. Leonard Scarnesi Says:

Not a swipe at McCoy. Pretty dumb to even think so. But it is, after all, JOE is the one doing the thinking. I guess it is thinking.

  8. Trubucfan22 Says:

Mccoy is used to losing. And that is not his fault. This team the last 4 years has seen so mich losing that it’s a common occurance. Do you expedt a guy with mccoy’s personality to hang his head and pout after every loss? He knows he gave his all and left it all on the field. If that isn’t enough to win then you got to give credit to the other team. Why should mccoy throw temper tantrums after loses? He’s not that kind of guy and “fans” expecting him to go turtle after a losing another game is idiotic. Not after going 2-14 last year and only 2 wins this year. Call him a loser because he is. But that isn’t his fault.

  9. DallasBuc Says:

I like that he is a good role model and shows good sportsmanship. He should be commended for leading a life in the spotlight as a professional athlete with integrity. That being said, he is not a great DT for this football team. Maybe if the coaching and talent around him was better he might appear to be great but no one is mistaking him for Reggie White who incidentally was also a role model that played with sportsmanship and integrity. Can’t hide greatness.

  10. Joe Cool Says:

I turned the dial last night on the way home during his “rant”. Tired of this guy….His name will NEVER be up that stadium with the greats. Take your money and run, Sir.

  11. Joseph Mamma Says:

He is a good player but a lousy leader which is pretty evident right now.

  12. SmithandWinston Says:

Can we please stop saying “simple as that”!? It’s getting a little old.

  13. Ryan Says:

I’ll start having a problem with McCoy smiling when I think he is just mailing it in. He hasn’t given us a reason to think he’s not leaving it all on the field yet so no big deal.

  14. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

MadMax is an expert at stupid.

  15. ShutTheBucUp Says:

    Ready for the draft already

  16. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Gerald McCoy is a great player, and he certainly isn’t cruising now that he has his contract. That is obvious if you actually pay attention to how he plays.

But the idiots don’t see sacks sometimes and they assume he isn’t contributing. They know nothing. The man gives 100% on the field. The man takes on double teams on a regular basis. The man is a good sportsman.

And most of all, he is one of the key reasons this team has not quit.

And it hasn’t, as anyone with an ounce of intellect can see.

  17. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

And, btw…McCoy is STILL on pace for double digit sacks.

  18. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

On topic, I don’t think Quinn was taking a shot at all. I think that’s a stretch. He’s trying to sell fans on Clayborn, who we know sucks.

  19. Ray Rice Says:

Man this guy is something else. Cheesing and playing grab a$$ after the game. What a joke. Did Aunt Geraldine see the video clip of Cousins after the game when he went off on the media? Probably not because that reaction was of a person who was happy to have whooped his a$$. He is the only person in the NFL who gets ran over then gets up and pats the opposing player on the a$$ for it. He reminds me of Pedro Cerrano in the movie Major League with Charlie Sheen.

  20. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Don’t see Terrel suggs smiling after a loss, or James Harrison, brain dawkins, or sapp, or d brooks or, they would be up and down their teamates arse for playing that terrible…..sick of this laizez faire attitude bring back schianno where he had the guys playing with their heads on fire and passion

  21. KW Buc Says:

Like it or not, as long as he’s here, he’ll set the tone in the room. Right now it’s: Losing is OK as long as we respect the guys who beat us.

  22. Getaclue Says:

JJ watt wasn’t smiling at his press conference and first thing the reporters said was he didn’t seem like himself and he went on how he was pissed. Wish I could see that one time at least

  23. Buccfan37 Says:

A picture tells a thousand words. That’s the first time I’ve seen it. Yeah it did. Money heals all wounds.

  24. Buccfan37 Says:

Rather Rod Stewart’s “every picture tells a story don’t it.”

  25. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

sucks as fans that we care more than these guys appear to

  26. blind melon Says:

Just when you think the internet fan base couldn’t get much worse… SMH.

I blame too much watching drama’s on television.

  27. Q Says:

    That’s your boy joe

  28. MadMax Says:

And Bonzai, spoken like a true master at knowing stupid….we go way back and you my friend have posted some stupid sh*t over the years….and go ahead, keep posting it, you havent changed.

  29. denjoe Says:

At least Mcoy plays more than on nickel and a “little at DE”

  30. Brett Says:

The Minister of Defense was nice after the play also. I don’t mind good sportsmanship. No question GMC’s shoulder injury is affecting him. Also the lack of pass rush by anyone else is a factor also. If defenses don’t have to double team GMC due to his injury, the Bucs are in trouble.

  31. DavidbigBucsFan Says:

The one thing you all missed out on is the reason he gave………God. Though God doesn’t care about football His children are expected to be joyful in all circumstances. The reason GMC can smile after such a bad loss is that he thinks he has something far greater than anything on this earth so why not smile. Some of you should read a Bible to learn more about the gift.

  32. Lamarcus Says:

So Boykins tcu qb just gave a high 5 to the WVU coach after a defense melt down and said coach is smiling/grinning. That’s that make the coach soft? Or careless? Or just congratulating a good play and giving props when props due? Sapp was mean and brutal. Like at him now?

  33. Idontwannahearitanymore Says:

Gerald: we won’t try to change the way you are if you don’t try to change Jameis.
