The Countdown: 20 Worst Buccaneers Personnel Moves Of The Past 10 Years — No. 14

July 14th, 2015

It’s the countdown feature you’ve all been waiting for. Not really, but on the heels of last year’s award-winning “20 Worst Buccaneers Of The Past 10 years” feature, Joe had to deliver.

A list like this is highly subjective and toxic. Fits of rage were common during production meetings at JoeBucsFan.com world headquarters. Scared interns soiled their pants. Full beer bottles were smashed, and a treasured Rachel Watson poster was accidently destroyed. But order was restored.

Current and former general managers and head coaches might not like what’s coming, but it had to be done. This is what happens when your team is 30-70 in its last 100 games.

No. 14 — Scaredy Cat Dexter Jackson

NFL teams cannot bust on second-round draft picks. That’s a great way to screw up a franchise. However, there’s drafting a second-rounder who proves disappointing but still contributes, and then there’s selecting a guy that drags the team down or simply can’t play the game. Big difference.

Enter wide receiver/returner Dexter Jackson, the Bucs’ 2008 second-round pick. He could not play NFL football. He was too scared.

Jackson didn’t want to get hit. It was clear on gamedays, and early in his rookie campaign, Jackson told The Tampa Tribune that a punishing blow on opening day of ’08 got into his head. Even blocking icon Michael Clayton called him out in September of that season.

“You can’t be scared,” Clayton said. “You’ve got to just to hit it up in there through the hole and get all you can get. Dexter is a young guy. He’s going to learn how to do it.”

A former Buccaneer on the ’08 squad told Joe that Jackson was afraid of contact in practice, saying he’d dive at times, leaving coaches and teammates scratching their heads.

Joe scratches his head wondering how the Bucs’ scouting department drafted a guy — at No. 58 overall — who didn’t have the stomach for the game.

The next five receivers drafted in 2008, Earl Bennett, Early Doucet, Harry Douglas, Mario Manningham and Andre Caldwell, all had productive NFL careers.

No. 15 — Firing Jon Gruden

No. 16 — Choosing — And Drafting For — The Jim Bates Defense

No. 17 — Drafting Cadillac Williams Over DeMarcus Ware

No. 18 — Garrett Gilkey: Virgin Center

No. 19 — Cutting Chris Jones

No. 20 — Failing on Brett Favre trade

  1. Bee Says:

This is probably one of the worst picks made by this franchise. Smh…

  2. Buc-A-New Says:

    Dexter Jackson over firing Gruden?

  3. mike Says:

I remeber when we picked him not ever hearing of him but thinking… Hey we need speed so this could be good. He had a punt return in the final preseason game and was thinking at worst he could be a special teams ace.
Wrong and wrong. His 1st game at the saints it look like he kept losing his footing as soon as the ball was in his hands and that was odd…. come to find out, it was by design. What a bust! I remember hickey not wanting to take credit for the pick. It was always a mystery to me who was drafting durring the gruden years. Didn’t seem like gruden was picking bc he only cared about our 1st pick and he hated rookies. Mckay then allen, hickey???
I guess it was a team effort.

  4. al121976 Says:

I am so glad Dennis Hickey is gone, that guy ruined a lot of coaches careers and totally ruined our franchise because of shitty draft scouting.

  5. Another J Says:

We picked that bum over DeSean Jackson!

  6. Joe Says:

@Buc-A-New – The second season after Gruden left, the Bucs were 10-6 with a surging young QB and the Coach of The Year runner-up. Hard to make the case losing Gruden set the franchise back enough to earn a higher ranking.

  7. Idontwannahearitanymore Says:

I thought he was a soccer player the way he took dives!

  8. Strider #FamousJameis Says:

McClown •Ghost Johnson• Collins. Add them to the list of “Busts” and failed Players.

  9. Mike10 Says:

Wasn’t he out of some small school like Appalachian State?

Interesting list here so far Joe, curious though as to how badly this affected our franchise. Who was drafted after him that would be a difference maker?

  10. cmurda Says:

    @Another J

No, we didn’t. That was a God awful pick but DeSean was drafted 9 spots before our selection.

  11. what? Says:

We’ve had dozens of mind blowingly bad draft picks, but we’ve only fired a super bowl winning coach once. And we did it in a year where we sat in 1st place after thanksgiving, despite the terrible 2nd round draft pick we’d made that year.

  12. cmurda Says:

@Mike 10. Aside from all the WR’s Joe listed, how about Jamaal Charles. Cadillac had just suffered a devastating knee injury, but I guess that would have made too much sense.

  13. Mike10 Says:

Ya… down goes that mid day coffee.. slept thru that last sentence

  14. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Joe

I’ve got madd LUV for U guys. U guys open the door- and created an amazing website for a disbanded fanbase. Looking to voice their frustrations… But C’mon bruh

The GUY that has the most TOTAL WINS, DIVISIONS TITLES, and O’yeah WON US THE FREAKING SUPER BOWL (released). Is at #15

An this sniveling little weasel is #14? Wow

  15. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    @Mike10

After this, U better put some Bourbon in your next cup.

  16. Buc1987 Says:

Meh uhhh Gruden’s not even in the top 10?

  17. WS99 Says:

NFL teams cannot bust on second-round draft picks. That’s a great way to screw up a franchise.
    *********************

-Jackson was small and he obviously didn’t face the best possible competition during his college years. However, he had a very good Senior Bowl and that kept the momentum he built during the 2007 college season on the rise. He went to Indy (combine) with a chance to raise his stock by proving he had top-notch speed.-

Came from a small school, had a good showing at the senior bowl and combine. Hmmm, the more things change the more they stay the same.

  18. mike Says:

man, that 10-6 season did not mean the franchise was in good shape. Smoke and mirrors and played a putrid nfc west, didn’t beat a good team, and i think josh completed every jump ball pass he threw.
The guy was a total bust but going with earl bennett or andre caldwell doesn’t change the franchise much and deshawn jackson was off the board. Jamal charles was there but we had just used a top 5 pick on rb a few years earlier.

  19. Danati74 Says:

Lets hope these bad years of drafting ended last year. 1st rounders should always be good. So should 2nd rounders, but when we got GMC, then Brian Price. B. Price bust. A. Benn bust. A. Claiborne and Cheeseburger Bowers were busts. M. Barron was a bust. Hopefully ASJ is not a bust. Hopeful Marpet is not a bust. I know drafting is a gamble, but thats why the franchise pays guys to steer the team into making good picks, but all these years were soo bad. Go Bucs!!

  20. Buc-A-New Says:

Ok Guys, Im home from work. Now the serious Bucs discussions can commence. I wonder if letting John Lynch go a few yrs too early is on the list?

  21. duthsty rhothdes Says:

Lynch was washed up when let go, gruden though should be top 3 worse moves letting him go, the team has been in toilet sense then. The Gruden curse has taken over the Doug Williams curse.

  22. Buc-A-New Says:

Hey Dusthy. I am not saying that Lynch is a top ten blooper at all but if you look at Lynch’s highlights almost as many of them are in a Broncos uni as a Bucs.

  23. Buc-A-New Says:

The only reason I don’t argue with you Joe about your position of Gruden is that I’m sure that the Front Office couldn’t Shove a great personnel guy down his throat that had total control. Gruden probably wanted to dictate every player acquired and that is not his forte’ even though he could never admit it.

  24. Howard Cosell Says:

I think the release of Michael Bennett is Joes #1.

Other topics may include Bevis, Alstott, Derrick Brooks.
It’s highly subjective, but they all are bad moves, it’s just a matter of how
    you order them.

  25. duthsty rhothdes Says:

Alstott and Brooks were done… I mean emmitt smith and jerry rice were released, nobody claimed Brooks and as a Brooks fan glad he left with memories of being great… Id think “lovies basement” must be in top 3

  26. Buc-A-New Says:

There is simply not enough comment traffic here. With as awesome as the site is for coming out with about 6 articles a day we should have More Comments. I know Joe…….”.This comments format is just fine.”

  27. Buc-A-New Says:

    I still can’t stay away though. 🙂

  28. loser/winston Says:

don’t worry folks you can add some more dumba$$ moves like lovie and putting a coach & gm name tag on him. and your new piece of crap QB.

So he’s not your QB either? Or are you that ignorant?

  30. Buc-A-New Says:

How goes it 87? I hope the fam is doing better than the last report.

  31. Buc1987 Says:

I’m praying for rain in California
So the grapes can grow and they can make more wine
And I’m sitting in a honky in Chicago
With a broken heart and a woman on my mind

And the music takes me back to Tennessee
And he asked who’s the fool in the corner crying
I say a little ole wine drinker me

It’s Dean Martin night for me.

BLASTING LOUD. My wife and kids are away for the whole week out in Seattle.

How lucky can one guy be …I kissed her and she kissed me

Like the fella once said, ….Ain’t that a kick in the head?

  36. Buc-A-New Says:

LOL Bro! Glad you are having a grand ole time. It is good as we grow older to actually experience loneliness as peace! It is a rare thing in a father’s life. Have fun but not toooo much fun if you get my drift.

  37. loser/winston Says:

no he is not and never will be. or are you that stupid.

  38. Buc1987 Says:

loser/winston…then it must be obvious to everyone that you’re a useless tool to every Buc fan on this site and a spineless troll.

  39. Buc1987 Says:

I’ll keep in mind to not feed the trolls no matter how hungry they are…

  40. WS99 Says:

Speaking of stupid. I love nothing better than seeing people spend their time in a place that reminds them of something that bothers them.

Winston is here for years. So, enjoy your years (not months) of hate posting on JoeBucsfan, home of Jameis Winston, the face of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers franchise.

We’re laughing with you, not at you. No, really.

  43. Buc1987 Says:

99 and Buc …I’ve been waiting years for this opportunity. Here at last!

I don’t even answer the phone when they call to check up on me…

    Just kidding.

  44. Buc1987 Says:

LWD…I guess he’s not so useless after all. Does make for a good laugh once and while though.

I wonder what his old S/N used to be? Actually it’s very easy to tell who it is with no capital letters and the $$ in type.

    Welcome back robert.

  45. Buc1987 Says:

It can’t be Meth Mike though. Not enough calling of Bozo in his words. So I’m settling on robert for now.

  46. WS99 Says:

    Lmao

  47. WS99 Says:

Trading Mark Barron better show up on this list!!

  48. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

lol. It’s funny how people can’t help but identify themselves. I agree w the R9 guess.

  49. Buc1987 Says:

This is MY home. It’s Joe’s site, but I’m one of his tenants. I know everyone on this site, because like I said this is my home and I’m always home.

  50. Mike10 Says:

WS99, it wasn’t as bad as drafting him!

  51. Buc1987 Says:

Mike10…I think you’re on the right track. Barron will be on the list, but it won’t be because they let him go….

  52. WS99 Says:

You right mike, 7th is high but he’s better than any safety on our roster.

  53. Buc1987 Says:

99…I’m not agreeing with Mike. I just know Joe.

  54. Cobraboy Says:

Surely Michael Clayton will rank high on this list…

  55. Buc1987 Says:

Cobra…that might be in the top 5…

  56. Buc1987 Says:

Stay tuned we could resign Bowers and he might make it on the list. Surely the Bennett ordeal will make it on the list.

  57. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    87′

Just keep your stanky a$$ feet off my coffee table bro. An don’t forget to use the damn coasters on the coffee table.

  58. Buc-A-New Says:

DB and 87, you guys Literally had me literally laugh out loud and am still smiling.
I hope this carries into the season!!!

  59. WS99 Says:

Oh yea and before joe starts his rant he’ll be sure to address the brainless fan(s) that support #23. And of course the real fans will eat it up. I know the drill.

  60. Buc1987 Says:

    YW!

  61. Buc1987 Says:

It’s nice to be envied for once in my life….lol

  62. WS99 Says:

  64. WS99 Says:

    Isnt that called RJS

  65. Buc-A-New Says:

LOL 87. We don’t need skype. Just an Auto refresh with each post will multiply comments by 3 at least.

  66. Buc1987 Says:

Welp it sure would be nice if fans like robert could actually see me giving him the middle finger…

  67. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    WS99

For Us that Played S/SS position from-High School, JC, (Whatever Division) -Simi Pro, NFL Europe, THE League. U can see the kid( Barron) has talent..No doubt about that. I don’t need the positive words from Lynch, B-Dawk, and others (concerning Barron) to confirm that.

As an organization, we’ve done a terrible job developing talent that last couple years. Its been extremely toxic environment for awhile.

  68. Buc1987 Says:

Well I’ve been political blogging for the past 2 weeks and that discus thingy is a completely different animal compared to JBF. You have to be an extremely fast typist. Luckily for me I am, and that edit button comes in handy more than once.

  69. Buc1987 Says:

LUVMYBUCS…you know why right? Because we keep getting a new coach every 2 years. smh

  70. BucsFan85 Says:

I should comment more, I’m on this site everyday even while at work! You guys are great. Even the negative posts make me think more positive for the season. I’m ready!!

  71. Buc1987 Says:

Thank you 85. JBF is where the cool kids hang out. Nothing compares to it. Although it does bring some of the dregs of society along with it, but they provide balance for the site.

  72. Buc1987 Says:

Time to throw on some Run DMC…

  73. BucsFan85 Says:

Lol @ 87 I know. I feel right at home. I feel like I know all of you guys. Joe and you guys speak the truth. Something you don’t get on the team’s site.

  74. BucsFan85 Says:

Training camp so close. Almost 30 days and our Bucs take the field

  75. Buc1987 Says:

85… it took me about a month to get used to JBF. I was a rah rah the Bucs can do know wrong type of fan. That was until I found JBF in the spring of 2013.

You should be here when the fights start up. It’s epic and I never say that word.

Should have been here for the Freeman debates and this past spring for the Winston-Mariota battles. Truly fun times in my book.

  76. WS99 Says:

I was a rah rah the Bucs can do know wrong type of fan.

    **********
    There’s a site for that. #BN

  77. BucsFan85 Says:

@ 87, was here incogneto for winston/mariota debates but not for Freeman. Was for Winston all along, but excercised the idea of mariota. So glad we picked Winston. Been a fan since early 90’s. Ready to fire those cannons!

  78. WS99 Says:

    Luv

    I’m a fan. Of you n Barron.

  79. Buc1987 Says:

I’ll admit though it’s not for every Bucs fan. Sometimes you have to have thick skin in the thick of the battle. It’s fun though. We have some definite characters on this site. And Joe’s the ringleader.

We all worship at the alter of Joe.

Did I just say that? Now I know I’m drunk!

  80. Buc-A-New Says:

If we had Skype you guys would wonder why such a hot chick married me.

  81. Buc-A-New Says:

Maybe with three or four months of good behavior Joe will give me my name back.

  82. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    87′

Yeah, that’s part of the reason. But when, we drafted Barron for Schiano’s system. I can’t recall one creditable safeties coach on the staff. I can’t recall one veteran safety on the roster-Ronde was a conversion. When U draft any player that high, everything gotta be in place.

  83. Buc-A-New Says:

    *more*

  84. BucsFan85 Says:

Lol not the only drunk. I guess us Buc’s fans know how to put em’ down.

  85. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    @WS99

Bruh, U know I got LUV.

  86. Buc1987 Says:

Just threw on some Planet Rock…time to go old school break dancing music. I hope the neighbors don’t call the police, because I have my receiver on 45 out of 50.

Now I just have to find my Puma suit and Kangol. Perhaps break out some linoleum and do a head spin….

Can the wife stay away for another week? Hmmm

  87. Buc-A-New Says:

I agree Luv. Barron could have been very useful in a typical 4-3. Sometimes the average fan doesn’t realize the difference in schemes and how Huge it can be towards the player’s individual skill set.

  88. Buc1987 Says:

    Excellent post Luv as usual..

  89. Buc-A-New Says:

DAMMMMMIT!!!! I have Got to plan trip down there this year! My family is asking me too and I want to tailgate with a few of you dudes.

  90. WS99 Says:

This qb said “planet rock” hell nah. Go home 87 you’re drunk!

  91. WS99 Says:

Comes from growing up on an island with no cable TV, only having 3 channels and LOTS of radio stations. To this day I barely watch any TV at all.

  118. Buc1987 Says:

Yeah g’nite all. Time to go back onto the political blogs now and bash the dems and repubs. So much FUN!

Goood night and grease for peace!

  127. Buc1987 Says:

    P.S. I’m an independent…so I attack both sides.

  128. Buccfan37 Says:

Buc1987… now you are independent, did the 20 and counting GOP field turn you off? You change political direction like anyway the wind blows.

  129. Buc1987 Says:

I’ve been an independent for over 10 years now. No one in my former party is far right enough for me. That’s why I’m an independent. I don’t trust any of them, so I pick the guy or girl that least sounds like a politician.

  130. Nick Says:

not to mention he never learned he played in the NOrth and South league.
