“Sloppy With His Feet. Bad Accuracy. …”

March 31st, 2015

JameisNot everyone loved Jameis Winston’s pro day workout like Bucs general manager Jason Licht did.

One former NFL quarterback was somewhat sickened.

Jim Miller, the former Michigan State QB and 11-year NFL veteran, said Winton blasted Winston’s performance this afternoon on SiriusXM NFL Radio, saying Winston was “sloppy with his feet. Bad accuracy.”

And Miller went on to say Winston’s balance was off and he said Winston’s private QB coach George Whitfield did him a disservice. Miller said Winston shouldn’t have had such a complicated, long workout, just three-, five- and seven-step drops that every NFL team wants to see.

Former Bucs QB Shaun King also blasted Whitfield on Twitter with similar critique of the scripted session.

You can hear Miller’s take below via the NFL Radio audio player.

I am amazed that you would cite this…but I will give you credit for attempting to seem like a journalist instead of a head over heels fanboy

  2. Skyline Crew Says:

Not the first time this has been brought up.

“Winston’s throwing mechanics are sloppy. And that’s putting it nicely. His feet are sloppy which causes his entire lower body to be sloppy and also his entire upper body. He gets away with this because he has such a strong arm and is still consistently accurate. With some discipline in his mechanics, Winston could become an even better thrower and more consistently accurate with the football. When Winston misses he misses high, especially to his right. He has a tendency to drop his throwing elbow when throwing to his right and causes a lot of his balls to sail because his hand dips below the football at the release instead of staying “on top” of it. This happens less when he throws to the left because the motion of throwing to the left naturally slots his elbow in the right position and he’s less likely to let it sail.

Under pressure, Winston’s mechanics get even sloppier. He does a good job of moving within the pocket but it takes considerable effort to move his big frame around and he’s not as precise or subtle in his movements as he should be. Winston shows a strong ability to handle edge pressure, it’s just the pressure up the middle that tends to cause his decision making to implode.” – NFL Philosophy

    Jim Miller? Who is that?

    *************

I thought Winston could walk on water? So they should have made it easy on him? LMAO get out of here. It showed his weaknesses, which is a good thing not a bad thing. Now he knows what he needs to work on.

  5. JoeJoes Fungi Nails Says:

Joe…I think your site has been hacked and a phony Jameis story criticzing him put up on the front page …..

  6. Couch Fan Says:

I admit that it wasnt a good pro day. It wasn’t bad either. I admire Winston for challenging himself instead of trying to take it easy like certain other players who had a much easier pro day and still didnt impress anyone…

  7. mac Says:

I watched it… Winston looked fine… Was he perfect, no… But he did well enough to show that he is by far the best QB available in this years draft… I can’t wait to see Winston hooking up with Evans like he did with K. Benjamin the year he won the heisman…

The guy just made 102 throws and looked fine doing it… Still think he is out of shape?

  8. IANBECKLES Says:

funny thing is when he did the simple 3, 5 ,7 step drops he looked fantastic and also looked solid in the red zone but by doing the throws that he was weak at he also showed isn’t afraid to try and get better. L&L applauded him for doing so

  9. Supersam Says:

We better not pick this guy.

  10. Buc4life1979 Says:

    @ “bo”,
When you have your own website devoted to news stories about a specific sports team, devoted fan boy or not, NEWSFLASH!!!, said “Joe’s” qualify as real journalists.

And speaking of so called “real journalists”, I’m soo glad you’re all making your obvious flagrant bias known now….Watched Winston’s pro day from start to finish on nfl network…while im watching the kid perform, im checking various “other sites” that are reporting a porky Jameis going thru his drills lmao….Watching thru BLINDER’S MUCH Hater’s lol….That’s alright…Keep hating hater’s, at this point you’re ALL laughable at best, while #5 most likely gets his name called 1st come draft day.

  11. Waterboy Says:

All I can say is watch the pro day workout for yourself.

  12. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

The pick is in. It’s Winston.

You can make yourself believe it’s a smoke screen. But, please be here on April 30th.

  13. Keepitreal Says:

It’s done subparsam. Get used to it.

  14. ufour20 Says:

He liked fine? He looked off sync and his feet are horrible. His right shin swings way out and up on each drop back. Reminds of the stereo-typical way you would think a girl runs (not bashing, just giving an example). Watching the championship game between the Seminoles and Ducks proved to me head-to-head, who was a better QB. I still want Leonard Williams over both of them, so eh.

  15. Buc-O's 82 Says:

Niether JW or MM are worth #1, trade down or pick a DE. MGM

  16. MTM Says:

Winston is the pick all negative issues will be overlooked. The FSU homers are never wrong.
Cue the FSU fight song until your skull is numb.

  17. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I see this as a cup half-full…..he has some room for improvement and time to do it. Both Mariota and Winston are very young and very talented with great ceilings.

At least the sloppy feet aren’t cement feet….

  18. usospecial Says:

Supersam you must love infamil because you wine like a baby. You are gonna love winston.waaaahhhh lol

  19. INDYbucsfan Says:

@ufor20- watching them head to head proved who was the better QB?… So you agree that Winston is the better QB. I watched the game
And listened to numerous people say that Winston had the better game but his team really let him down. And even mariota supporters said that mariota had a bad game…

  20. BigMacAttack Says:

Yeah, whatever. We need a QB and if he’s the guy, I’m happy with the pick. It’s all a crapshoot and hard for the Bucs to do any worse than they have.

  21. charactermatters Says:

A bad game by MM STANDARDS but still outperformed JW.

  22. ufour20 Says:

Yes watching the game in which Florida State was pummeled prove to me that the winning QB on the Ducks played better and his team WON the game. I didn’t and don’t have to listen to anyone explain me what my eyes and own experience tell me. QB’s with bad feet and throwing motions rarely make it in the NFL. Ones with character issues even less so. Just sayin’.

  23. RealkillersmoveinSilence Says:

Bama Rich Jim Miller the same guy who torched the bucs plenty of times

  24. BucPuck Says:

Looked awesome to me. I hate to say it as a Gator fan but I think he will be a superstar in the NFL and finally give the Bucs some attention. We will become a nationally covered team on day 1 after the draft.

  25. charactermatters Says:

Once again Winston is blameless. Whitfield’s fault.

  26. SOEbuc Says:

I like Winston for the Bucs #1, but today I saw a lot of what I have been seeing in his workouts. A lot of behind throws over the middle. A lot of the times it seems like his receivers have to reach back and he’s not leading them enough. This kinda scares me because i feel a lot of safeties will be able to come up and make pic 6’s. Hopefully Dirk and QB coach can fix this

  27. DIII>BUCSFOOTBALL Says:

didn’t the bucs have a say in his workout?? Maybe that’s why it looked like something out of mini camp?? I hate 75% of you all.

  28. Stpetebucsfan Says:

I agree with TBBF’s take and would add that’s why we hired Koetter and Bajakian.

Both of these prospects are full of talent and both are coachable kids. Our staff is no longer Marcus Arroyo.

Whomever we take will get coached up on whatever weaknesses(and they BOTH have some) they might have.

    ________________________________________________________

    Cement feet = sacks
Poor footwork = INTs and poor accuracy.

Not that either are good, but one is obviously better than the other.

  30. Stpetebucsfan Says:

Did anybody notice if Fameis broke wind during his workout. I assume not because his detractors would have already been on here claiming he sh!t himself.

I’m truly comfortable with either of these QB’s because I believe them both to be prospects not NFL QB’s yet. Both are good prospects we can all hope that whichever one we select will turn into a “franchise QB”.

I honestly do not care which one we pick because I see the positives and negatives in both players. But it’s getting to ridiculous.

    Out of shape….bad footwork…wrong system…geez.

It was a freaking pro day and yet I read some so called “experts” upset because they thought it was too scripted. What the hell was it going to be? Just go out there and start winging it?

As for Fameis throwing motion I get the concern but is it overwrought. Both Eli Manning and Philip Rivers have been criticized for their throwing motions. Hasn’t held them back.

Historically Joe Montana and Terry Bradshaw didn’t have pretty throwing motions and perhaps the best pure passer of all time Dan Marino had questions coming out of Pitt.

It’s the down time, the slow season in the NFL and it appears all that’s left is for us to make mountains out of molehills with both of these prospects.

Take one and let’s see what happens.

Jaworski was initially very skeptical of Winston’s mechanics, but today raved about how he’d cleaned them up. He was all smiles today in regards to Winston.

  34. tval Says:

He did this to show hes dangerous under pressure and not taking easy road to #1 like he could have.. peyton manning would just throw every one ofnthose balls in the dirt…lol!! . I applaud whitfield and jameis for doing this. Jameis looked better with pressure than mariota did in a clean pocket..

  35. Dave Pear Says:

    @StPete,
Always the voice of wisdom. I’ve stopped commenting as much because the Winston haters are really annoying.
You always seem to bring the proper perspective.
    Thanks SPBF.

  36. Pat Says:

The only pick that’s in is that finger up your nose….and that hand belongs to Lovie. Thanks again for handpicking McCown again…MGM fan.

  37. Stpetebucsfan Says:

Why thank you Dave. I certainly don’t please everyone. Ask Robert? LOL

  38. buddha Says:

Bust written all over him. Don’t need an overweight, enabled, egotistical mysogynist who thinks he has nothing to learn from anybody. I guarantee that the NFL will humble him even more than it has Johnny football.

  39. Sam Says:

I think it’s telling that ALL of the trade talk centers around MM. Notice you have heard about no one wanting to trade up for JW.

  40. panhandle buc Says:

    Yeah, sounds like a bust……..

Todd McShay: Jameis Winston would receive second-highest QB grade he has given in last decade (behind Andrew Luck)
