Josh Freeman Emerges

March 16th, 2015

josh freeman 1115Former Bucs franchise quarterback, leaky, sleepy Josh Freeman, has not hung up his cleats.

Freeman is not scheduled to attend the NFL’s inaugural veterans scouting combine this weekend, but perhaps that’s because he already has teams knocking on his door.

Per Joe’s friend and longtime NFL writer Mike Freeman, now of BleacherReport.com, Freeman recently worked out for the Jets and it went well. Apparently, Freeman, 27, also is drawing widespread interest across the league.

Is Joe surprised? In a league with teams that just courted bumbling career journeyman Josh McCown, of course Joe is not surprised. Freeman is a better quarterback than McCown, assuming Freeman can arrive on time for meetings and games.

When last officially on the NFL scene, Freeman mysteriously was cut by the Giants last April. He then had his Tampa house go into foreclosure, but then paid that bill in full. He covertly was spotted in January working at IMG Academy in Bradenton with quarterback guru Chris Weinke.

Weinke is now QB coach for the Rams, a team with an uncertain quarterback situation. Joe’s curious to see whether the Rams bring in Freeman for a workout.

  1. tmaxcon Says:

I wish him luck. Hope he gets it right. I’d take Freeman over the heartless / spineless Glennon. Freeman still has more potential than 8.

  2. Buc1987 Says:

    Interesting.

  3. Trevor Says:

he could easily be #2 in this league if his head is in it. He’s 27, about the time most people finally grow up and get serious. plus 27-34 are usually the better QB years

  4. bucrightoff Says:

He shouldn’t be allowed back into the league until the NFLPA investigation comes out. Beyond that, this is clear agent speak trying to drive up interest. He’s not even going to the veteran combine so….

  5. onetrickpony Says:

    Say what ?

  6. Clint Says:

I am late to the party, but is it true he got pretty into cocaine while in Tampa? This was what I heard from a few different and reputable sources.

  7. WS99 Says:

Tim tebow worked out for the Eagles today according to 620 Wdae

  8. DallasBuc Says:

Wish him well. Seemed like a good kid and still has great potential.

  9. headstoskywayaftergame Says:

Remember that affectionate call he made to Ron and Ian ? Pure ecstacy ! Maybe molly was there….

  10. mac Says:

Until Josh Freeman can fix his accuracy and ball placement he will never succeed in the NFL… He was far too inaccurate and inconsistent… Then there is his off field issues, lack of commitment and fragile ego…

Stick with soccer and Michael Jackson imitations Josh…

  11. P'cola Buc Says:

Freeman working out with the Jets? Tibow working out with the Eagles? Chip Kelly turning the NFL topsy turvy trying to get players and implement some sort of his Oregon system in the NFL? Buccaneers with the 1st overall pick in the draft and it coud be someone who may finally end up being a franchise quarterback? Gentleman, it’s a fantastic time to be a pro football fan!

  13. buccochris Says:

tmaxcon? Glennon is heartless & spineless? Wow! No idea where that came from. MG has been the best QB we’ve had the last 4 years, and we would’ve been a heck of a lot better than 2-14 if he had been the QB from day one!

  14. tgreg Says:

    What a moron

  15. P'cola Bucc Says:

    @buccochris

I do believe we may have indeed been better with Glennon last year (if he would have still been able to walk after being sacked so much)…. however I highly doubt we would have been “a heck of a lot better”.

  16. adamant Says:

While I agree tmaxcon’s comment was a bit over the top, so too is yours. Glennon the best QB we’ve had in the last 4 years? And what do you base your notion that we would have been better than 2-14 if he were in there? I don’t see it, honestly. And I am very glad our record wasn’t better than that so we can now finally get a franchise QB.

  17. Stpetebucsfan Says:

“He was far too inaccurate and inconsistent…”

THANK YOU Mac says!!! The revisionist history on this board over one of the most overrated QB’s I’ve ever seen.

Josh could throw the ball through a brick wall….IF he could only hit that wall.

Here was a dude that could sometimes throw a perfect 80 yard bomb only to turn around and put the ball at the feet of a running back on simple little swing pass.

He had size. He could run. And he had a cannon. The cannon was inconsistent and when the Bucs stopped JFro from running they took half his ability from him. JFro was a best a poor knockoff of Cam Newton.

@bucchochris Do not worry about Tmax. He gets some haterade in him and the hyperbole begins…Lovie is the worst coach of all time…MG8 is the worst QB of all time despite stats that show otherwise. Trust me you don’t wish to be on Tmax’s sht list.

Having said that please forgive me Tmax I certainly don’t want to be on your s list. 🙂

  18. Another J Says:

Josh Freeman is better than Josh McCown. That ain’t saying much, but it’s true…

  19. bucs4lyfe Says:

Lol Glennon is the best we we’ve had in 4 years? and you based statement on what evidence because it damn sure wasn’t wins or playing time, Glennon will be best known for being a wasted 3rd round pick…. That inaccurate guy holds alot of franchise records so deal with it. Glennon 19 td/9 int season he threw for freaking 2600 yards in this era that’s pathetic. Be mad but freeman had the best year of ANY quarterback in the history, it’s pretty sad to wish ill will on the guy…. Should be more focused on Glennon oh wait he’s useless and we’re getting a new quarterback. He’s gone, he’s a drug addict or whatever but no one has yet replaced him, I think it’s safe to say it won’t be Glennon

  20. tmaxcon Says:

I don’t have a list sir. I’m the Kinder gentler tmaxcon but I still hate Lovie and 8. You could never make the alleged list you rule stpete

  21. bucs4lyfe Says:

Lol poor Glennon…. Hahaha I’m sure mike kafka is accurate to, so was josh mccown at times but didn’t make them good quarterbacks either shrinking under pressure.

  22. Dewey Selmon Says:

We are talking about the franchise leader in td’s. (80), Something Jamesis will end up breaking with Dirk as his mentor.

  23. Stpetebucsfan Says:

    @Tmax

Whew! Glad to hear that. 🙂

  24. knucknbuc Says:

Lol glennon best qb last 4 years?!??! Lmao I’ve heard everything now. Not based on important things like wins and yards. Maybe completion percentage of course it’s easy to complete dunk and dink garbage and have a high completion percentage when your a scared little boy and your team is getting blown out.

  25. SteveK Says:

    Tmaxcon,

Please watch the first drive of the 2013 season, @ Jets.

Gosh Freeman is NOT an NFL QB. In fact, the NY Giants thought more of both Ryan Nassib and Curtis Painter, and sent Freeman packing.

He is the tin man, no heart.

I’d take a more limited Glennon every day of the week and twice on Sundays, it also seems that the Bucs agree with this notion.

  26. sturgis1115 Says:

Freeman and jets Tebow and eagles !!! What is going on?

  27. tmaxcon Says:

    SteveK

Horrible drive.. No doubt. I don’t think it is accurate to judge a qb future on one drive but that’s your choice. I’m no Freeman fan but do wish him well.

I was done with glennon when he ran out of bounds early instead of getting 1st.

  28. Celly Says:

Freeman is the only QB to lead the team to a winning season in the last 6 years.

    #Facts

  29. Couch Fan Says:

Lol, Im sure he will be looked at but nobody will touch the quitter. They are just teasing him a bit, keeping his dream alive but he blew it a long time ago. That’ll teach you to act like a spoiled brat when you don’t get your way.

I’ll take Glennon any day over that guy.

  30. Greg Schiano Says:

The Buc’s are being taught another lesson….the Mad Scientist Chip Kelly will start Tim Tebow in 2015 and go to the playoffs as Tebow has been working with Tom Brady’s personal trainer for the last 2 years. If Tebow ever got the shot the QB’s he whupped in college have…he would be a perennial starter. Tebow would fill the stands in Tampa and has won more playoff games than the HC and all the recent QB’s have seen!

Tebow..Tebow…he also does not rape students or knock over local Publix stores!!!! Bonus!!

  31. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Just love all the stories about ex-Bucs…..

Perhaps there should be a new NFL reality show….”Soft-Knocks”……stories of the ex-Bucs….
Michael Johnson could be the star….with Anthony Collins co-starring along with Guests Daquan Bowers, Josh Freeman & Josh McCown….

  32. Greg Schiano Says:

You are forgetting that the Buc’s had a much better coach back then!! The current coach throws football games to be the worst in the league thinking that one better draft position is going to make this team and him a better HC!! Wishful thinking!

The Buc’s will win when Team Glazer changes the coaching staff! Lovie has no ability to evaluate talent, could not game plan for Friday Night Tykes, let alone the NFL, and don’t even get me started on his clock managment….12 men on the field stunts!!

    Greg Schiano

  33. tmaxcon Says:

    Greg schiano

I think you have Tebow starting for Eagles confused with Tebow being charged with fraud and impersonating a QB after he was seen attempting to throw a football. Move on sir. It’s the first step.

  34. ddneast Says:

Just when we were agreeing on something Tmaxcon, you call Glennon heartless and spineless. A little strong don’t you think.
As always, mod you have any particular reasons to cite as to why he is heartless and spineless.
I’m not a big Glennon fan, but if your going to call a player out and level those kind of accusations and names, you really ought to be able to give some reasons as to why.

  35. Buc1987 Says:

Greg Schiano….I will never read another one of your posts again.

I will always from here on out just skip right over them.

    Why?

Tim Tebow that’s why. Your cred is shot to hell now. Congrats!

  36. Buccfan37 Says:

I don’t have anything against Freeman, except I thought it was a lousy pick when the Bucs took him.

  37. tmaxcon Says:

    ddneast

When he jumped out of bounds without getting 1st. Was huge for me. I want the guy who doesn’t care score or team record. The guy who is willing to do whatever it takes each play. I’ve never liked 8s game and never will. Everyone is entitled to their guy though.

  38. Dan Says:

We can all agree on this. We are 2-14. A constant loosing team at home. If we don’t start winning soon we will be the Bucs of old and the glory days will be a passing fad. Hope we draft right this year. Go Bucs.

  39. onetrickpony Says:

One thing i don’t miss is Freeman’s stupid grin everytime he threw an interception

  40. Stpetebucsfan Says:

    TBBF FTW!

That was awesome. A show on the Bucs called “Soft Knocks”.

  41. ddneast Says:

Greg Schiano, another thing I doubt the very religious Tim Tebow wouldn’t do is to bear false witness against his neighbor like you continually do.
It seems you have learned very little from your role model but that isn’t a big surprise.
Tmaxcon, I thought you were going to bring up that one play. But wasn’t it you who posted earlier a QB’s future shouldn’t be determined on one drive.
If you don’t like his game, fine. I wasn’t that thrilled with it either last year and said he was given the chance to make Josh McClown the next Wally Pip.
He blew that chance but I’m not ready to call him heartless and spineless because of one play.

  42. tmaxcon Says:

Good idea….forgot to add Cousins & Mylew to the list……Dominick could moderate…

  50. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Nothing at all wrong with Freeman that proper medication couldn’t fix….everybody deserves second chances….but 3rd & 4th chances….like “Cousin Eddie said” “I duuh’ no”

  51. cmurda Says:

Joe said the following 4 days ago.

Yes, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed likely backup cornerback Sterling Moore in free agency late this afternoon.

However, Sterling is visiting the 49ers. Safe to say we didn’t sign him?

  52. vancity bucs fan Says:

Bucs fans… Please lose the poor attitude. Your making me upset to even be part of this fan base. Grow up… I bet many of you guys never even played football and you guys are the worst of the bunch. Shut your stupid mouths.

Freeman totally deserves another chance. I thought he was a good qb for this team. Everybody’s entitled to their opinion but how would u feel if you got run out of town by a bunch of morons and ppl kept talking trash thinking you’re only good for McDonalds. Go take your $225 bank acct and shut up.

  53. Couch Fan Says:

If you dont want people to talk bad about you, then you shouldn’t do silly things like sabotaging the team to force your way off the team. Just sayin…

If he deserves another chance he’ll get one. But he’s not getting one…

  54. snook Says:

Unless he gets fat again, he needs to retire. Fat Freeman was the only good Freeman.

  55. bucrightoff Says:

Thank you for nailing the key point Couch Fan: Freeman tried to sabotage this franchise because he was a mental midget. He’s not someone who fell of the tracks due to Schiano, he messed up his own life and tried to blame everyone else for his downfall.

And again….where is the NFLPA investigation? The Bucs deserve to be exonerated and Freeman deserves to have it land at his feet. Not that it matters because unless he shows top end starting ability again he’s not welcome in the league, but it’d still be nice to nail him and his agent for those shenanigans.

  56. vancity bucs fan Says:

Zero compassion to another human. So if you were a carpenter, you didn’t like your employer you tell everyone… Should you never be a carpenter again. Stfu damn

  57. The Buc Realist Says:

    @vancity bucs fan

if you made up lies about your employer, and all the other employers saw that you and the agent lied. Then you will never be a carpenter again!!!

  58. vancity bucs fan Says:

    Haters gonna hate
Why don’t u take a big sip of haterade

You guys should be proud for him, that he’s turning the tide and still fighting towards his dreams.

  59. bucrightoff Says:

Most peoples disdain for Freeman comes from him trying to tar this franchise. He acted like a 4 year old to force his way out, but when it turned out he was a backup at best, his career was over. He is not welcome in the NFL again unless he shows elite ability.

Oh and by the way, it’s out now Freeman had this workout before the Jets traded for Fitzpatrick. Which again shows you his career his over. He could have bowed out gracefully from Tampa and still had a career. He went scorched earth, scorching his own career in the process.

  60. Buc1987 Says:

    And the banner read….

    “We Believe in Josh”

    F.U. Josh.

  61. ddneast Says:

I wish Freeman no I’ll will. If another team wants to gives him a shot,so be it.
If there are any GM’s in the biz who worry about what people think and won’t sign a player because of it, they won’t be GM’s long.
I don’t know what happened to Free and neither does anyone else.
Steve Dumig likes to blame Schiano with his undoing, but I sincerely doubt that.
If Schiano was really trying to do that, it not only cost him his job, but also any ofther future job in the NFL.
So where was the reward in running off the Free.
And even if he was, all Free had to do was drop a few words to some media types about what was going on and if the rumors turned out to be true, fans would have grabbed a rope and drawn and quartered Schiano under the Pirate ship at RJ Stadium
But we never and still haven’t heard a thing from the reclusive Freeman.
Sorry, but if some coach was trying to ruin my career in the NFL, he’d have me squaring off with him on the sideline in front of national TV.
Freeman never seemed to have a bit enough set to do anything like that.

  62. Maze Says:

    Drug addict

  63. LargoBuc Says:

Freeman could’ve been our FIRST franchise QB had he not checked out mentally. Oh wait it’s Greg Schiano’s fault.
Sorry but that’s a weak excuse. Greg Schiano sucked and was a liability on game days. But I dont buy that he “ruined” Josh Freeman. And it’s hard for me personally to pull for Freeman given how messy he ended his tenure here. That’s my opinion

  64. Uranus Johnson Says:

The great mystery. The guy looked like a longtime answer at QB for this woebegone franchise but something happened. The wheels were coming off before the Schiano supremacy though. It is obvious that the dude has issues. That being said, hope he gets his act together because he has the raw talent to succeed. If a bum like that guy that the Cardinals rolled out in their playoff loss actually got a gig in the NFL there is a place for Freeman the interception chucking demon.

  65. Stpetebucsfan Says:

I have no problem wishing JFro personal success. I just have a problem with the greatest Bucs QB…the only winning QB since Brad Johnson…somebody who deserves a second chance.

What was Minnesota? A 1st chance? How about the Giants.

Again though I have no personal animus against him and I hope he gets his life back on track and if that involves the NFL good for him.

  66. The Buc Realist Says:

I do not root for JFRO to succeed. I have no problem with him “failing” or being a “bust”. But when someone Lies and blame other people for his problems and then never owned up to that, then I have a huge problem with that and hope that at some point he hits rock bottom. Then he can start to make amends, not in football but in life!!!

  67. MariotaOrWinstonOrWalkdaPlank Says:

Freeman had his best season under Schiano, I doubt Schiano ruined him. It didn’t help that they obviously didn’t like each other, but Freeman was a time bomb. Tick. Tick. Tick.

  68. Phillip Says:

You guys act like Freeman raped a girl and got away with it(No I’m not saying a potential QB coming to the Bucs did that either)… The kid was inconsistent in college and wasn’t supposed to be a 1st round pick but when you are the Bucs and never have had a QB that we drafted see a second contract then you are bound to reach.. He showed some great potential but the blame is on the Owners(and Freeman) for not surrounding him with consistent or credible coaching or weapons really.. He set franchise records and lead us to a 10 win season.. He’s trying to get himself back into the league and prove he isn’t a bust we all should be happy about that.. But tons of bitter people on here.. I wouldn’t wish any of you to get fired and lose your jobs..

Btw Joe… The Giants cut him because they only run with 2 QB’s usually on the roster and I’m sure they didn’t want to give up on their 4th round pick they drafted a year earlier.. Common sense no?

  69. bucs4lyfe Says:

Josh freeman had his best year under raheem morris, he was on the decline when schiano got here like a lot of our players

  70. SteveK Says:

Freeman is a traitor, and he sold old the Bucs, Buc fans, and mostly Greg Schiano.

He’s a coward, and if rather have Blaine Gabbert then Freemadonna aka the soulless enigma.

  71. MariotaOrWinstonOrWalkdaPlank Says:

Freeman broke franchise records for yards and TD’s in 2012, under Schiano. 2010 was great and all with the TD/INT ratio, but I’d say he really looked like an NFL QB in 2012.

  72. bucs4lyfe Says:

Damn you people must have really liked Freeman a lot…. Hmmm a coulda, shoulda versus a never has been never will be, Freeman is better than mccown and that ain’t saying much, it ain’t saying much that he’s better than Glennon….. Just another tragic take off wasted talent

  73. Vincente Says:

I miss you josh freeman. I still remember what you did to the Vikings. Your a very talented QB. Good luck man.

  74. foghead407 Says:

Id take freeman back as our backup to jamies. I said id rather have freeman than glennon or mccown

  75. White Tiger Says:

Hope ol’ Josh does well – we can compare Freeman resuming HIS career, to the length of time it takes that idiot Schianana to get another coaching gig (some of you may remember the moron coach who had that mancrush for Napoleon Dynamite…it’s a stretch for me…and to let you know where my heart is on this, I’ll even include any high school job)

Just as hopeful all the Freeman-haters eat a LOAD of…crow.

  76. White Tiger Says:

And for the Freeman-haters that are also Kid Fameis supporters: If you didn’t like Josh, get ready, you’re about to see a similar version…

  77. Strider #FamousJameis Says:

<3 freeman and I feel for him he is going to win a Super Bowl his dream will come true.

  78. Matt Says:

If JF5 can get off the adderall he will be good. It gives him sharp lost puppy dog eyes. If he can relax his eyescand take in the entire field instead of dating them back and forth he can get hisxmojo back. Jf5 was a big big partier in south Tampa when he first got here. I’m sure he has matured.

    Man, what could have been….

  79. bucrightoff Says:

Do people not realize he’s pretty much blacklisted from the league? I’ll keep saying it, the NFLPA investigation is never coming out because he and his agent were behind all that crap to force his release. Until he can show top talent again, he won’t be getting another look. His workout with the Jets was so good they traded for Ryan Fitzpatrick shortly after.

No one has anything personal against Josh, he just sort of tried to tar the Bucs. He’s just like a Panthers player to me now, no love.

  80. SteveK Says:

    White Tiger,

    A Freemanite can’t change it’s stripes.

  81. LargoBuc Says:

Freeman = Jameis??? I dont see it. Freeman was soft spoken and laid back and to a fault at times. Jameis is outspoken and charismatic. I cant wait to see him run our huddle.

    —————————————————————

Yes. For 5 straight games in the middle of 2012 Freeman looked elite. Then the wheels came off.

Bucs fans remember what happened when he left and how he went all “scorched earth” as it was described. They are not likely to be all that forgiving of Josh’s behavior.

Watching Freeman fall off the bus at the end of 2012 and especially beginning of 2013 was a painful thing to endure for all involved. Especially when he had just showed such amazing promise during that 5 game stretch I mentioned.

Hopefully the entire truth about that situation will come out one day.

  83. MTM Says:

Freeman is an enigma. He has had some success and has some ability to play in the NFL even if its as a back up. With all the openings for QB’s in the NFL why is he still unemployed. The Cards, Jets, Rams, Browns, Eagles, Texans, Bills need help and the QB position.

If McClown can get signed to other contract after going 2-14 and looking like Freeman did in Minnesota on MNF for an entire season. SMH.

  84. Trubucfan22 Says:

Agree with the first poster. Glennon is not good. Freeman was at least decent from time to time. Glennon just stinks all the time.

  85. BoJim Says:

Glennon’s gonna do great under Koetter!!!

    Good luck Josh.
