Pass Defense On Dubious 2012 Pace

October 5th, 2014

How does that expression go? The more things change the more they stay the same.

Back in 2012, the Tampa Bay pass defense literally was inches from having the worst-ever NFL pass defense. The Adderall Twins got things rolling, and guys like E.J. Biggers, Leonard Johnson, Danny Gorrer, LeQuan Lewis, and safeties Mark Barron and Ronde Barber, kept the train moving in the wrong direction.

That crew just missed the dubious mark, earning the second-worst pass defense in history, allowing 298 yards per game through the air.

Your current Buccaneers, with a better pass rush and less blitzing, are now allowing 292 passing yards per game. Drew Brees gutted them today for 371 yards, largely without Jimmy Graham and plenty from that apparently alien play called a screen.

This is just torture for Bucs fans, and the irony is legions of fans are drinking beer now thinking Alterraun Verner played pretty well, along with Barron — the same Barron on the field in 2012.

No QB this season has had a bad day against the Bucs. That really has to change, otherwise there will be wholesale changes in the secondary next season.

If the OL could run BLOCK…we would not need to talk about SO MUCH pass defense……

  2. Wes Says:

Glennon wasn’t bad today but the drops and defence were typical for what we have seen this year so far and if it continues will make for a long season.
The team made a lot of bone head plays / penalties which killed us.
Lovie needs to take care of that.

Good thing beer is cheap and this is a 24 hour town……choke…wrap up…love come on man?????

  4. "TheKevin" Says:

Utterly horrific defense. We will lose McCoy cause we won’t pay him. We can pay someone else a whole lot less and get L’s. No reason to pay someone 100 million and still get losses. Therefore he’s not needed here. The bucs have won 6 times out of the last 27. No reason to watch anymore.

  5. Mike10 Says:

Good thing we got a defensive minded coach..

  6. Ray Rice Says:

The offense will be our best defense this season. Let’s face it. Glennon is getting better. Still has work to do. But if he can keep pace and keep improving it will help the defense a lot.

  7. Trubucfan22 Says:

I really think the secondary coaching needs to improve. We are never close to the wrs. I understand zones have holes, but 1 on 1 we typically aren’t even close. Either the cbs are told to play soft, or they just aren’t prepared for the routes being ran. We need to get tighter coverage.

  8. Andrew 1 Says:

Disappointed that we lost today, but I am encouraged by the way we are improving on both sides of the ball. Make no mistake about it, we are improving. Obviously it doesn’t look like we are going to make the playoffs this year so the only thing that us bucs fans should hope for is improvement.

And you are wrong Joe, Barron had a good game. Passing yards allowed does not tell the whole story.

Let GMC walk. He ain’t worth the cash.

really, stevek. i was wondering why he would sign here for this dreck. with comments like this, it is hard to take your pro-glennon stuff seriously at all. but i guess you are prone to hyperbole.

Secondary did make some plays, but you overlook the pass rush. Zero sacks today, small handful of plays where Bree’s felt pressure and no pass rush with game on the line. Make all the changes you want in the secondary, won’t change a thing without more consistent pressure.

  11. Trubucfan22 Says:

See ya Kevin, hope you enjoy basketball season this winter.

  12. Mike10 Says:

And there’s no way you give McCoy 100 mil. Just because Watt got it, doesn’t mean u pay McCoy that. They’re not the same player. If he’s selfish, he demands that. If hes a team leader and sees the same room for improvement we see, he demands and asks for 50-60 mil

  13. Trubucfan22 Says:

Lol at people wanting to ditch gmc.

He might not be making huge impact plays every play, but he’s still the best player on the line. You get better by building your good players, not throwing them to the curb.

  14. lurker Says:

    also, gmc is playin hurt.

  15. Trubucfan22 Says:

Mike, you realize the bucs have sucked for gmcs entire tenure here… What makes you think he would take a pay cut to play here? Just because he was drafted here doesn’t make this his home.

  16. Patrick in VA Says:

We knew at the beginning of the year that the o line had a heavy pass defense background.

  17. Brandon Says:

That wasn’t a screen the Saints kept killing us with, it was a simple flare pass. The adjustment was made on one play, but they couldn’t stop it again.

  18. Joseph Mamma Says:

Hey at least our 2012 defense could stop the run though. We might of had the worst pass defense that year, but we were close to the #1 in the league at stopping the run.

  19. Mike10 Says:

    TruBuc,

Then it’s bye bye gmc. At some point we have to stop overpaying players. You don’t bring in a corner for $16 mil a year when you’re not going anywhere as a franchise. Same goes for any other player. The only player that get’s QB money is a QB unless you just have that special player..
Only way I’m giving him close to big money is if it’s incentive based

  20. BucsInDurham Says:

Silly speculation going on about McCoy here, let’s not forget he’s still playing with a broken hand. He’s going to be a Buc and he’s going to get paid very well to be here. A bit below Watt money, but he’s worth as much or more than any DT not named Watt.
