Connor Barth Gets Mike Nugent Money

July 26th, 2011

There seems to be confirmation of the Bucs’ first big raise of the offseason. That salary floor is getting within range of binoculars!

The cash goes to solid kicker Connor Barth, who the Bucs made a wealthy young man with a restricted free agent tender, so reports Stephen Holder of the St. Pete Times.

Barth, who said he is anxious to rejoin the team and excited to stay in Tampa, said his understanding is his tender comes with a salary of roughly $1.9 million, a considerable salary for a young kicker in the NFL.

The last kicker the Bucs paid that kind of dough was Mike Nugent, and that didn’t turn out well back in 2009. But the silver lining was Barth arriving off the scrap heap, and he belted three 50-yarders in one game that year, which certainly sold Joe.

Kickers are typically a wacky, inconsistent breed, but hopefully the Bucs have struck gold with this kid.

Last year was a good year for him.. the year before he was having problems.. lets hope for more of last year.. and not the one before…

  3. Jesse Says:

call me crazy, but I think Connor Barth is an extremely important asset to our team. He is a reliable kicker, and he’ll only get better.

  4. Ian Says:

That’s $2 million for the guy who led the team in scoring, and scored about 1/3 of the teams total points.
Not a bad deal when you look at it that way.

Hey Joe – I know this isn’t the article for this post, but I was thinking about the lockout ending and Goodell and Smith and EVERYONE else kissing the fans asses. What happened to Goodell saying “this is for the fans…so they don’t have to pay for 4 full priced preseason games.” I haven’t heard of anything happening on that front. Did we have a fan representative at the negotiations? If the whole lockout was so the fans got better football “cough-BS-cough” then why didn’t we get a say in these negotiations?? I was thinking about this last night amongst the hoopla of the lockout ending and Joe Henderson actually wrote a good article about it today and beat me too it, but I was just curious to get your take. I’m happy the lockout is over, but I just feel like the fans are treated like it’s an honor that football is back and just go back to business as usual. I want some sort of fan amendment to the CBA. If they really care about us why do they never listen to us? Oh right, because they only care about the little green bills in our wallets. I’m happy I get to see my Bucs and #5 get better, but something just isn’t sitting right with me.

(HEADSUP NOTE: Mark Dominick is holding a press conference at 4 p.m. Today)

He’ll be our leading scorer for years if he workss out. This is a good signing, especially with the trouble we’ve had finding a good kicker.

I cannot express properly how excited I am that the lockout is over!

  7. Theodore Says:

His best game was the rain soaked Redskins game though, where the Skins kicker choked while Barth nailed all his attempts.

    @Buc N’ A
We are getting tickets at lower costs. The only ones that would complain are the ones that don’t actually buy tickets and still want a handout.

Don’t let the ESPN idiots rile you up. Right now they have started an effort to create a story…is the NFL high and mighty to the fans? Are they treating fans like they’re lucky they get to watch the games?

ESPN is trying to create a story. It’s crappy journalism, but in the end it might pay off for we fans, because if it catches on, the NFL will do something to make things up to the fans…like maybe stop blackouts for a year.

The truth is though…the NFL has an addictive product and we are lucky we get to watch the games. If we’re honest, we all were going crazy at the thought of there being no season. Even if the NFL does say so, they have a right to do so…it’s their product…and we need it.

    Buc ‘n A:

Joe believes you already answered your own question. 🙂

As to Joe’s take on the lockout, Joe believes he has been quite clear what he thought of the asinine lockout. Only thing Joe will add is, say Ford autoworkers go out on strike. Does Ford and the UAW invite customers into the contract negotiations? Of course not. Not sure why some actually believe this should be the case in a sports labor squabble. No one is putting a gun to people’s heads to buy tickets; to watch the games on TV.

Joe’s done with the lockout. It’s over. It’s history. For all Joe knows, he’ll be dead when this pact expires.

  10. CharlieB Says:

Why the Hell do fans think they get a say in a labor negotiation. We also buy cars and fly in airplanes but we don’t expect to have any say in their union agreements. Fans are the consumer. If you don’t like the business or the price, stop purchasing it.

just another notch on mark dominik’s belt. barth is looking more and more solid as time goes on and is worth the cash if he can keep it up.

  12. Garv Says:

Good for him! He’s worth it,

  13. Mauha Deeb Says:

I’m gonna start calling him Connor “Money” Barth. Money because he is “Money” on the field and now is “Money” at the bank too!
    Alright Connor!

  14. Dave Says:

I see a lot of raises for many players to help them get the salary floor because I do not see them overspending on a big name free agent… still… and I don’t blame them.

  15. Patrick Says:

Many fans might laugh at this, but having a good, reliable kicker in the NFL is very important. So I’m glad Raheem and Dominick are making an effort to keep Barth here.

I am Connor Barth of the Clan Barth. I was born in 1518 in the village of Glenfinnan on the shores of Loch Shiel. And I am immortal. …
