Bucs Tagged As Worst Team In NFL

July 21st, 2010

Bucs fans seeking comfort might want to stay away from the Internet for the next year seven weeks. All the preseason prognostications could be quite hard on Tampa Bay.

Randy Cross, the former All-Pro turned NFL Radio talking head, took the down-on-the-Bucs theme to the limit in his latest projections for NationalFootballPost.com.

Cross gives the Bucs the No. 1 pick in the 2011 draft.

2011 NFL Draft Top 5

1) Tampa Bay     Lowest payroll in NFL, youth and inexperience give the Bucs the top spot.

2) St. Louis        When the Rams settle their ownership issue and acquire a lot more talent, they’ll stop drafting here.

3) Buffalo          Building “Lines” and finding a QB doesn’t happen fast these days.

4) Kansas City   This is K.C.’s last year in Top 10 of the draft for awhile

Joe’s not seeing the Bucs as the worst team in the NFL. If so, and the Bucs are stuck with two or three wins, Joe is quite sure that would bring a swift end to the Raheem The Dream era.

Damn you Cross! Another discussion that will devolve into something worthless. Here we go….

    Stupid, stupid, stupid…

  3. thomas Says:

Well! We have been telling you sheep that the only way to OBJECTIVELY evaluate this team is that they are 30-32nd in the league.

It is the cold, hard truth. I know you Gruden bashers want to believe that his firing was a positive for the org, well for at least 3 seasons it won’t be.

I know you super-patient Glazer lovers believe that this team will be good in 2012 – I am not so sure unless this leadership is canned soon and the kids are supplemented by some quality vets

  4. Louie the HATER! Says:

What???!!! Lowest payroll in NFL, youth and inexperience aren’t a recipe for success like we’ve been told?

  5. Not a Rocket Surgeon Says:

I’m pretty sure by the time all the rooks are signed… we won’t have the lowest payroll… could be wrong though..

It amazes me that rebuilding is such a foreign concept to some. They’ll take their licks for sure, especially early on this year… but I would certainly expect some significant improvement as we approach the middle of the season.

Our secondary (a strength) will give some leeway to our Dline to establish…

I hope our Oline is settled, pissed off and ready to play the power man. If they can do that and our backs can pound the rock, that will give Freechise and his wideouts some room to develop too…

A lot of if’s – but Cross is certainly underestimating this team with little to go on…

(Plus – he loves him some Gruden, and does not like the organization for how they handled the exodus.) That much has been very, very clear for a very long time.

All in all – my opinion carries as much weight as Cross’s. Whatever.

no comment on this post—–i just want to join the optimist bandwagon—
new in tampa bay in late 2003 coming from a city with no pro teams—i have been going to bucs games starting in 2004—-now a season ticket holder—–i have never heard so much negative talk by radio sports talk shows like i hear here——what’s up with this?—–support the bucs or put a lid on your mouth—-
    thanks to The Optimist!

  7. thomas Says:

Stop using the term re-build! You rebuild by using all available sources for the best available parts.

I understand drafting and playing a young QB, but the rest of the team can be a combination of draftees, trades, RFA’s.

27 y.o. 5 year vets are more solid to rebuild with than a 22 y.o. rookie, irrespective of the round that they were drafterd in.

Per PFT, approx 50% of 1st rounders taken in 2007 have disappointed. The percentages go up per round.

  8. Not a Rocket Surgeon Says:

    No. Disagree. “Rebuild”

Initially (in 2009) the organization did not use the word “Rebuild” only because that directly relates to the profitability of the franchise.

With the calamity, as it was… they are now much more ‘accepting’ of the term and although this rebuild is different than most I’ve seen in the past, it IS a rebuild.

    “Rebuild”

A tear it down completely and remake the team wisely.

    “Rebuild.”

FA’s this year are/were limited in talent and longevity. Doesn’t make sense to bring in someone with 3 years left when you are beginning a 3 year rebuild.

    “Rebuild.”

Lol – I’ve typed “Rebuild” so much now, it doesn’t look like a word anymore…

The “I want it now” types are just going to have to learn some patience. We’ve done this before…

    JMHO.

  9. JimBuc Says:

The fact that we have done this before is what makes the cries of the “I want it now” crowd so laughable.

  10. eric Says:

We have definately done this before!

    McKay
    Bennett
    Perkins
    Williamson

    All “rebuilders” that never rebuilt!

    AKA the Detroit Lions.

  11. thomas Says:

I would take the Lions right now over this debacle!!! Straight up trade – their org for ours!

I would love to have Stafford to Johnson, Burleson and Pettigrew, Jahvid best, Suh, Williams and VandenBosch up front, Julian Peterson.

I would prefer our secondary however.

  12. nick Says:

its no wonder nobody knows this guys name….bucs havent drafted 1st since 1987 and we did so 4 times in back to back year….vinny testeverde was our last 1st overall pick, some teams continue to draft in the top 3 and we are not one of those teams and you put us ahead of rams who are always in the top 3 and KC….this game guys an idiot, payrolls around the leauge are getting low for everybody and they are dogging the bucs for it now but if theres a lock out then they’ll be smart…shut up randy whoever you are

  13. RustyRhino Says:

    Welcome Mr. Bob,
Don’t get the wall posters here wrong they all are fans…. well they all claim to be fans anyway.

I must agree with you: ” i have never heard so much negative talk by radio sports talk shows like i hear here——what’s up with this?—–support the bucs or put a lid on your mouth—-”

But don’t get the “fans ” wrong here they just have a difference of opinion, with being a fan. Freedom of thought and of spouting their personal and foretelling views of our BUCS…

    Again welcome!!

  14. Gary Says:

    Thomas,

thats why you are something worse than a hater. Wanting to totally replace “your” team with another franchise is sad and pathetic. So you are basically saying that you don’t give a $hit about anyone associated with this team. Players, coaches, no one! I love how you threw the last part in there about the secondary… that makes it all ok. LOL.

Nevermind that you choose the Lions.

Part of the pleasure in watching your team being successful is the knowledge that you enduring alot of pain when they werent and stayed with them for the long haul. You are just a crybaby. Not even your other friends on here would say something like that.

  15. eric Says:

    It really is deja vu.

Back in the Hugh era, the national media would predict the bucs were the worst, and hard core bucs fans (myself included), ignored it on the fervent hope that they were wrong.

That feeling would stay during training camp, chuck full of new rookies drafted high, followed by some decent play in pre-season games, again producing dreams and optimism.

Then, the regular season …………….whoops……………………………. 2 dash 14……………..

    Here we go again!

Old wounds heal slowly… but alway leave a mark.

It was time, man. It is time.

…and in some strange fashion, reminds me of this…

“…The soldier, above all other people, prays for peace, for he must suffer and bear the deepest wounds and scars of war.” Douglas MacArthur

    (i can relate)

  17. oar Says:

I’ll stick with – “I wish I could say something classy and inspirational, but that just wouldn’t be our style.
Pain heals. Chicks dig scars. Glory… lasts forever” – Shane Flaco

  18. Mr. Lucky Says:

I predict this is the First in a line of many, many, many article touting the youth movement in Tampa to still be in their diaper stage – ie stinking up the joint.

  19. Patrick Says:

Embarrasing as usual. Do all you Raheem lovers think this is acceptable?? We’re in the second year of a rebuilding phase and we’re #32 on a list??!! The way we’re rebuilding is bu***hit. The freaking 0-16 Lions in 2008 are not even on this list.

  20. Patrick Says:

There’s a reason why the Bucs have been getting spit on by everyone no matter what.

I agree with Thomas. They way the Lions are rebuilding is MUCH BETTER! They’re building through the draft, but they’re also bringing in some proven NFL contributors. They’ll make much quicker progress than us, while we’re jumping for joy going 6-10. Oh no, they’re bringing in free agents. I guess that’s going to kill their team!!

  21. Not a Rocket Surgeon Says:

    lol…

Lucky, I think we’ve already crawled, and are stumbling around like a toddler at the end of last year…

This is going to be the terrible twos. Surprising and “…Characterized by toddlers being negative about most things and often saying ‘no’, the terrible twos may also find your toddler having frequent mood changes and temper tantrums…”

Sounds like our some of the fan base to be honest. 🙂

  22. eric Says:

Just so were clear, if/when the Lions pass us by i am completely blowing a gasket.

  23. JimBuc Says:

Nothing funnier that Bucs “fans” saying the Bucs should do what the Lions do. LMAO. “Hate” clearly drives people to type stupid things.

  24. dominic33 Says:

ya , no kidding they are the worst team ! the glaziers need to sell the team to someone who gives a dam ! this year will more then likely be as bad as last year but thats what you get with owners like the glaziers who hire a coach with no experience !

  25. Patrick Says:

    @JimBuc

Can you along with others quit it with this “hate” thing?? It’s really annoying. If I’m a “hater”, then why do I come to this website almost everyday to read about the Bucs?? I love the Bucs, but when we’re dead last in a power rankings list and given a shot at only 5 or 6 wins this year, I think I have a reason to be disappointed.

  26. jarrett Says:

Jimbuc is the biggest troll of all time

  27. eric Says:

I am not saying that the bucs should do what the lions do. I am saying the bucs are doing what the lions have done -leading to “lasting pretenders”.

    i.e. “building through the draft”.

They had a zillion top draft choices, but horrific teams, with horrific coaching.

    Sounds familiar.

  28. Bucnjim Says:

The Lions are 12-52 in there last 4 years. The Bucs won more last year than the Lions have won in the past 2 years combined. They haven’t had a winning season since 1997 and are the only team in history to have lost all 16 games. Now someone wants to trade franchises? You guys have lost your minds! What have the Lions done to show all of you they have turned the corner? I really don’t get it! The least you could do is show some support to the players we do have on this team.

  29. BigMacAttack Says:

Reminds me of a saying too.

    Do unto others….then split.

  30. eric Says:

We have only been Lion-like since 2009.

Whether the lions current roster is better or worse than the bucs is difficult to say. Depends on Suh vs. McCoy possibly.

But, they have a young strong armed QB, and “building through the draft”. They are following a similar formula to us, so whats the real diff at this point.

Is raheem better than the Lions coach?

  31. Radio Mushmouth Says:

Worst Team in the league !! But done worry , Raheem’s job is secure.

  32. Patrick Says:

The Detroit Lions are definitely no model franchise by any means. I just think the way they’re building their team is better than the way we’re doing. They’re building through the draft (like we are) but they’re doing free agency too (not everyone in FA is over 30).

    @Eric

“Is raheem better than the Lions coach?”

Yeah, I would say so. Jim Schwartz is much better than Radio. Don’t know much about Schwartz, but from what I know it seems like he’s better. Being DC for the Titans for 9 seasons, he’s qualified unlike Raheem. At least he’s not a buffoon like Raheem making comments about “underwear.”

If they had a ranking for NFL coaches today, Raheem would no doubt be at the bottom of the list. But this season is a big one for Raheem. Hopefully it’s not deja vu all over again.

  33. gotbbucs Says:

I’d love to know the names of all of these kick a$$ free agents that were available this year that were going to turn this team into a Super Bowl contender. It was the weakest free agent crop in the last decade and probably the deepest draft in the last decade as well. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out which was going to be the best route to go this year. Next year should be one of the deepest free agent pools in years and the Bucs will probably get more heavily involved. Which to some of you equates into automatic contenders, since big spending in free agency has always produced the best teams in league history.
As far as the Bucs being the worst team in the NFL goes, it’s defidentily debatable, but I would put the Rams, Bills, and Browns below the Bucs.

  34. ZeroExpectations Says:

Soon the Bucs will be 0-5 again.

The Bucs were 3rd to last in 09 with the absolute worst rush defense in the entire NFL (4.8 yds a carry! Holy Hell).

They still have Raheem Morris and rookies and 2nd year playmakers on offense.

I say having them 32nd is a blessing. At least they are IN the NFL. As always, I have ZERO EXPECTATIONS.

GO RAHEEM, for many, many years to come!

  35. Patrick Says:

    @gotbbucs

“Next year should be one of the deepest free agent pools in years and the Bucs will probably get more heavily involved.”

Yeah, I hope they do. But remember, 17 of our own players are going to be free agents next year. That list includes key guys such as T-Jack, Davin Joseph, Barrett Ruud, Cadillac, Jeremy Trueblood, Earnest Graham, Stylez White, Barber, and Quincy Black. They have to dig into free agency next year, but I’m worried about them just bringing back all these guys we currently have on our team! Secure all those guys above, and then get right to work in free agency. Though I’m not sure if Barber will be re-signed. If Myron Lewis isn’t progressing, then I say bring Barber back for another year.

Let’s say they bring all those guys back. Then in free agency they should look for a good DE and a good LG. Zuttah has proven that he can’t start and I think Vincent is an upgrade over him, though he doesn’t necessarily seem like a long term solution either.

We’re not really sure what will happen with Ruud next offseason, but if he has yet another good year, they would be nuts not to re-sign him. Black and Hayes showed promise last year, but still need to play a lot better in 2010 than they did in 2009. So linebacker is still a question mark, though I liked the Dekota Watson pick.

Our corners and safeties are good. Our line is good, except for that one DE spot. Our receivers are set for now. Our line is good, if Penn plays and if Vincent performs like a champion. Many of you think we need another running back, but I actually think that’s one of the better areas on this team.
