Bucs Ink Defensive Tackle Brian Price
July 20th, 2010While on face value it appears unlikely that first round draft pick Gerald McCoy would sit out training camp, it’s a sure bet that fellow rookie defensive tackle Brian Price will be at One Buc Palace a week from Saturday when training camp begins.
That’s because the Bucs signed Price this afternoon.
Price, a second round pick of the Bucs, became the NFL’s highest drafted player to date to sign with his respective NFL team.
Price and the Bucs agreed to a four-year contact. Terms were not disclosed.
“I’m glad my agent got the deal done, so now I can concentrate on having a great Training Camp. I’m looking forward to contributing to the Buccaneers’ dominant defensive tradition,” Price said in a statement released by the Bucs.
Since Price is the highest rookie to sign thus far from the 2010 draft class, it sort of puts a dent into the popular (in some circles) “Glazers are cheap” cry.
It was important that Price got into camp on time. He was hobbled in preseason workouts due to an injury and missed most of the Bucs OTAs due to Price’s school requirements at UCLA.
July 20th, 2010 at 6:06 pm
Good!
Now sign Penn!!!!! So Freeman doesn’t end up in the hospital next season!
July 20th, 2010 at 6:16 pm
Joe, it may have put a dent in the “Glazers are cheap” cry, but it surely did not kill it. š
By the way, Penn recently said that he was excited about the season and can’t wait to get started. Doesn’t sound like a guy that is going to hold out.
July 20th, 2010 at 6:18 pm
“Since Price is the highest rookie to sign thus far from the 2010 draft class, it sort of puts a dent into the popular (in some circles) āGlazers are cheapā cry.”
I wish it would Joe but probably not. Both the Pro and Anti Organization camps are firmly entrenched in their stances with no hope of a compromise. (lol)
This was a pseudo-ballsy move by Dom since the market around Price hasn’t been set quite yet. If he ends up giving Price too much he may end up looking a bit foolish but if the market goes the other way he saves the Org some money.
I think the pros (getting him into camp on time) outweigh the cons (possibly slightly overpaying him) on this one. Good move Dom.
July 20th, 2010 at 6:20 pm
@JimBuc
Agreed. I don’t see Penn holding out into training camp. This has all been posturing by both sides. Can’t fault either side for their stances.
July 20th, 2010 at 6:26 pm
wow, signed a draft choice like everybody else in the league will, how unique and unusual!
July 20th, 2010 at 6:27 pm
OK, I’m impressed. This gives me hope McCoy will be signed without a holdout (or a short one anyway). Kudos to the Bucs!
IMHO, this still doesn’t get the the Glazerhouse’s off the hook for not spending. All teams must sign their draft picks, so it’s only a matter of time before all the picks will sign.
July 20th, 2010 at 6:32 pm
I think Penn holds out through training camp. Favre does it every year. š Why go through all this if he isn’t planning to take it as far as he can?
July 20th, 2010 at 6:40 pm
Eric, you are consistent. Conveniently leave off the timing:
“Price, a second round pick of the Bucs, became the NFLās highest drafted player to date to sign with his respective NFL team”
July 20th, 2010 at 6:42 pm
This is a good opportunity to line up the “haters.” The artcile could ONLY be good news, but since Joe through in the “dent” cpmment, the “haters” come running. Quick sampling:
“IMHO, this still doesnāt get the the Glazerhouseās off the hook for not spending. All teams must sign their draft picks, so itās only a matter of time before all the picks will sign.”
“wow, signed a draft choice like everybody else in the league will, how unique and unusual!”
LMAO. Plenty more to come I am sure.
July 20th, 2010 at 6:57 pm
@JimBuc, why don’t we wait to see exactly what the deal is before shooting off your mouth. Remember the signing of Vincent? You guys shot your mouth off saying the Glazer’s weren’t cheap only to find out it was a inexpensive, non-guaranteed deal.
Let’s see what Price’s deal really is.
July 20th, 2010 at 7:00 pm
I never said that about the Vincent deal, so don’t make stuff up. Besides, you are missing the point (shock). I suggest you re-read the article and think about it.
July 20th, 2010 at 7:02 pm
Price was SMART.
If McCoy holds out or even misses some of training camp guess who gets into the starting line-up – PRICE
Price also had good incentive. Dominik told Price if Price didnt sign he was gonna send the Elephant Man Penn to sit on him!
Now THAT’S incentive!
July 20th, 2010 at 7:02 pm
@ Louie
It’ll be a nice chunk of change because everything outside the 1st round is “slotted” based on previous years. Look at last year’s #35 overall pick, add a 3% bump and that’ll give you a ballpark.
July 20th, 2010 at 7:03 pm
Right on, Jimbuc:
Only the most desperate would view the signing (terms undisclosed) of a 2nd round draft pick as proof that the team isn’t cheap.
Virtually every second round player ever drafted has signed a contract and to my knowledge no team has ever failed to offer a 2nd round pick a contract. That wouldnt be evidence of being cheap, that would be evidence of bankruptcy!
Joe is usually right on but to suggest that the Bucs signing the first second rounder means that they aren’t going cheap by not utilizing other methods of making your team better is, well, absurd of course.
July 20th, 2010 at 7:09 pm
Thomas the Dolt, right on cue! And, as usual, also misses the point. Pretty sure no one has suggested that the Bucs might not offer Price a contract. LMAO. Once agin, tilting at windmills Thomas, tilting at windmills.
Very entertaining . . .
July 20th, 2010 at 7:19 pm
we signed a draft choice! Early!
awesome!
I suppose we have to celebrate this kind of stuff, goodness knows it wont be victories on Sundays.
July 20th, 2010 at 7:24 pm
“Itāll be a nice chunk of change because everything outside the 1st round is āslottedā based on previous years. Look at last yearās #35 overall pick, add a 3% bump and thatāll give you a ballpark.”
Exactly! That’s why I say it’s only a matter of time before everyone will be signed. Like I originally said, Kudos to the Bucs for getting this done.
The only suspense is if agents will try to get more because this is the last year without a rookie pay scale. So, at least in Price’s case, it looks like that is not the case. But, it’s not an indication that the Bucs are all of a sudden throwing money around. HARDLY!
July 20th, 2010 at 7:25 pm
LMAO. Eric, that’s about as close to a concession as you will ever go. By the way, no one is celebrating. Joe just made one harmless comment and you and your ilk had to run out and squash it. The rest of us are just commenting on how funny it is watching you guys, so angry that you are even confused about the story. Now that is FREAKIN HILLARIOUS!! Maybe if you and Thomas put your heads together . . . uh . . well . . . nevermind. š
July 20th, 2010 at 7:26 pm
It’s kind of funny, the apologists don’t really know what to say with all the “haters” applauding this move.
July 20th, 2010 at 7:27 pm
Eric, maybe you and Thomas can let Louie into your group. He’s a little confused too.
July 20th, 2010 at 7:34 pm
Glad to provide the evening entertainment Jimbuc.
Admittedly, the current Tampa Bay Bucs have me in a constant state of confusion and bewilderment.
July 20th, 2010 at 7:35 pm
The argument is far less entertaining without the good captain giving his opinion. JimBuc is facing a tough battle without the pirate ship firing back at Thomas and Eric. Good luck JimBuc!
July 20th, 2010 at 7:38 pm
@ Louie
“The only suspense is if agents will try to get more because this is the last year without a rookie pay scale. So, at least in Priceās case, it looks like that is not the case. But, itās not an indication that the Bucs are all of a sudden throwing money around. HARDLY!”
Agreed. There’s certainly an argument to be made that Dom “had” to pay him X amount thus, they’ve simply stuck to the status quo.
ps-I think the agent cash grab theory is overblown. The same guys who get the big money clients this year will be the same guys getting the big money clients next year. There’s no incentive to screw over teams you have to deal with every year…unless you’re Scott Boras and you control the market.
July 20th, 2010 at 7:44 pm
Woo Hoo…With only 11 days until traing camp the first Bucs celebration
They signed their Round 2 pick…
It’s gonna be a LOOOOOOONNNNNGGGGG season.
July 20th, 2010 at 7:44 pm
I for one, don’t miss the Capt’s foul and obscene comments. I’m sure he’s lurking out there somewhere.
July 20th, 2010 at 7:45 pm
Thanks Bunjim, it’s a tough job (not really), but somebody has to do it. Time for the Captain to take the next shift.
July 20th, 2010 at 7:47 pm
Note how fiction becomes fact. Preety sure no one is “celebrating” the signing. In fact it is the opposite, some are trashing the signing for no other reason than Joe’s “dent” comment.
It’s an angry, angry mob.

The only reason we signed him so soon is as a ploy to put pressure on McCoy to sign for cheaper, knowing his competition is already in camp….
July 20th, 2010 at 7:56 pm
FINALLY!!!!!!
FINALLY THE RIDDLE IS SOLVED! MushFace has figured it all out:
“The only reason we signed him so soon is as a ploy to put pressure on McCoy to sign for cheaper, knowing his competition is already in campā¦.”
ROFLMAO. Could you be a bigger HATER? Too freaking funny. What an inspiration you are to Thomas and Eric and Louie!!!
July 20th, 2010 at 7:59 pm
This is the FIRSTguy in this round signed. Give MD and his guys some credit. Everyone is sitting on the sidelines OUR guys went out and got the deal done….GOOD FOR YOU MD AND STAFF>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>GO BUCS
July 20th, 2010 at 8:08 pm
Since the Haters will bring it up anyway…
“Eager to start career, Brian Price pushed to make a deal
Some additional insight into Brian Price’s signing was just offered to us by his agent, Chuck Price (no relation), and it paints a picture of a young man whose eagerness to start his career trumped his desire for a few extra dollars.
In a negotiating season during which the rate of signings among top picks is best described as a trickle, Price struck a deal when no one taken in his range of the draft even seems close to signing.
Prior to Price’s signing today, the highest pick to sign was the Jets’ Vladimir Ducasse, taken 26 spots after Price, who was the 35th overall choice in April.
Chuck Price told us, “We zeroed in on what would be a very fair deal. . . It couldn’t help to be caught up in the feeding frenzy with all these other deals. We weren’t looking for a Sam Bradford deal. We’re not trying to set records. I was trying to help him reach his dream.”
Chuck Price declined to give financial specifics of the four-year deal but described it as “solid” and “very, very fair.”
He later added, “We didn’t feel like we needed to wait. We could’ve waited and got more or we could have waited and got less.”
http://www.tampabay.com/blogs/bucs/content/eager-start-career-brian-price-pushed-make-deal
I can see it now: “SO THE ONLY REASON THE GLAZERS SIGNED HIM IS BECAUSE HE WAS ON THE CHEAP!”
Good lord guys, get over it. Glad he’s ready to go. Go get ’em Price.
July 20th, 2010 at 8:17 pm
I think Mushmouth makes a good point about the early signing of Price. It’s a smart move for sure. It kills two birds with one stone. Price gets to camp on time to compete for a starting spot and a little extra pressure is put on McCoy to get the deal done. Seems hard to bash this move no matter how pessimistic you are!
July 20th, 2010 at 9:20 pm
Except that’s not the point MushFace made. š
July 20th, 2010 at 9:29 pm
Great copy of the article Matt! I think the article suggests very positive things about Price.
But since you mentioned it, many of us thought that the Price pick was strange being it was the 3rd under tackle taken in consecutive years. Just throwing it out there, but maybe Dom and the Glazer-toddlers knew something about Price and his rookie agent being an easy (inexpensive signing). Know I am noot representing this as fact, but where there is smoke . . . .(you usually find Jimbuc burning Gruden dolls and articles covering 1 year NFL turnarounds through the use of trades and free agency)
July 20th, 2010 at 9:39 pm
Thomas — you are one sick hater. As the story now goes in your twisted mind, the Glazers and Dom conspired to pick Price because they knew they could take advantage of Price and his agent? Really? Even for you that is a new low . . . I am almost speechless. Such utter stupidity there’s almost nothing to say.
July 20th, 2010 at 10:10 pm
….or maybe they took McCoy and Price because you need 3 good DTs for a solid rotation and we had nobody besides Miller. Or maybe it’s cause last year we ranked dead last against the run and had 26 sacks. Or maybe it’s causethe Tampa Two will never work without dominance from the middle of the line and therefore DT is the most important position for us. Or maybe it’s cause the professional scouts all had Price as the 3rd best DT in the draft and he was a steal in the 2nd round.
Nah…had to be a Glazer conspiracy to save money.
July 20th, 2010 at 10:18 pm
So giving a player about $2-7 million in guaranteed money when you have around $50 to spend makes you a big time spender and not cheap, are you guys serious, JOE REALLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
MY GOD I NEED SOME BEER, Heck I need to break one of my bottles instead.

July 21st, 2010 at 12:01 am
@ Thomas, I see you mention this many times that Price is 3rd UT taken in consecutive years. He is not even the 2nd.
Here is an analysis about Roy Miller by CBS Sports. He is NOT an undertackle.
“Compares To: KELLY GREGG, Baltimore — Like Gregg, Miller is more of a two-gap type but is trapped in a squat nose guard’s body. He has exceptional strength and can create a good surge off the ball, but does not have the speed to chase down quarterbacks from the backside. He has a strong hand jolt to separate and fend off blocks and uses that punch to shed with authority. He lacks any pass rush moves and just marginal-to-adequate lateral agility. He fails to recover and change direction in pursuit. He is a good wrap-up tackler at the point of attack, but when chasing on the edge he reaches and overextends, causing him to slip off some tackles. ”
Miller does not have the natural quickness or pass rush moves to be an UT. He does have the strength of a NT. He is undersized and thus can be a great 4-3 NT. So there you go. McCoy is the only true UT on our defense, Price will be a tweener and Miller will be an NT.

Trivia: Gruden lovers all hate the current regime. Hardcore/sensible Bucs fans do not. Hardcore/sensible Bucs fans want to give a fair chance to the current head coach and GM before dismissing their efforts. Also many Gruden lovers claim they have been Bucs fans and season ticket holders since 1976.
Q) How come every pessimist is a Bucs fan since 1976 and also a season ticket holder?
Ans) They have never been hardcore Bucs fans. They claim to be, they could be, but have as much patience as women do. Perfect definition for fairweather fans. Some of them are even rednecks btw. Chest bumping according to them might be a taboo.
July 21st, 2010 at 7:28 am
We’ve never signed a 2nd rounder this early. Trust me , it’s all about trying to save a few million on the MONSTER deal they are going to have to dish out to McCoy.
Everything can be traced back to the cheapness of the Glazerhouses.
July 21st, 2010 at 7:48 am
Are fans of other teams around the NFL as stupid and sh!ty as Bucs fans? It’s ridiculous how every single move this team makes is somehow a conspiracy against the players. Get a life morons and quit overanalizing everything.

Well said.

Guys, how you twist this into a negative is mind boggling. Look at what his agent said! It was a fair deal! How is that being cheap?
This is good news all the way around. Price sacrificed a few dollars to get the deal done, and Dom rewarded him by not lowballing him. His agent isnt stupid or he wouldnt be an agent.
How Eric and his girlfriends make this a bad news story is ridiculous.
July 21st, 2010 at 9:06 am
Gruden’s offenses simply sucked Says:

I am the only “True Buc Fan” in existence and how dare the rest of you proles even try to emulate me. I am the Greatest Cornholio and you will bow to my bunghole. I hate women, my ex wife is a total bitch, she divorced me because I’m a fag and haven’t worked in 10 years. BTW, I still live with my mother, in Tampa & have since 76′. I have sat in the Bucs parking lot and watched every home game on my b/w TV since 76′ with rabbit ears, and listened to the crowd at blackouts. I am the only “Real Buc Fan”. I hate Red Necks, I hate Trucks, I hate Men with Jobs who aren’t fags like me, I hate all music that isn’t rap, I hate my 3’rd grade teacher, she failed me 46 times. Raheem is so hot, I just want him to spank me.

Some of you guys opinions are certainly appreciated…
Others, well – I’m certain Joe enjoys the website traffic.
Props to the organization getting an early second rounder (really a first round talent) signed early.
Makes sense from all possible angles.
That leaves McCoy, Benn and Grimm.
Get ’em done.
July 21st, 2010 at 10:12 am
Who the hell cares if the agent was new, player wanted to get the deal done, or the other players wanted to wait for more $$. They were able to work out a deal and it says the team wants its guys in camp and ready to play. This team is going to show all you so called fans that they are on the right track
July 21st, 2010 at 11:42 am
BigMac,
You are a confusing dude. Sometimes your comments suggest an old timer who has been a longtime bucs fan, and then other times suggest a 12 yr. old little girl (like your last post).
