If Season Started Today Michael Clayton…

April 26th, 2010

… would be on the bottom of the Bucs depth chart.

That’s the word from Bucs beat writer Stephen Holder, of the St. Petersburg Times. Holder explains how nobody wants Clayton as Mark Dominik’s magic in getting draft picks for warm bodies seems to have vanished.

Holder detailed the options for Clayton, if Dominik decides to hang on to the blocking icon.

As it stands, Clayton will fall further on the depth chart behind Benn, Williams and Reggie Brown, who was acquired in a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles. Second-year pro Sammie Stroughter will be the Bucs’ slot receiver and Maurice Stovall also will vie for playing time.

The Bucs only options with Clayton are to release him now or keep him on the roster until the final cutdown if necessary hoping teams will suffer injuries at the receiver position.

If Dominik does indeed cut Clayton, in a perverse way, Joe would be interested to hear how Clayton spins this, blaming Chucky for his release.

That’s NOT true. Michael Clayton does have value:

    As a tackling dummy!!!

  2. d-money Says:

Hes so good at blocking maybe he could gain about 30 pounds and become a tight end.

    Then we could lose K.O.T.

  3. Mr. Lucky Says:

Did I just hear Joe on the Big Puppy show?

  4. Louie Says:

WTF!!! CUT THE GUY!!! Is Dominik doing this just to piss us off? Clayton is like a misfit toy — a wide receiver, who can’t catch.

  5. bucfanjeff Says:

The only thing he could say would be, “I didn’t live up to expectations. I can’t catch and I’m sorry.”

  6. up the gut Says:

Joe – Can you find out who the next 5 players drafted after Clayton are?

Did I just hear Joe on the Big Puppy show?

    Not today.

  9. justin Says:

I say hold on to him til roster cuts BECAUSE you may be able to get a 7th round pick for him and if not you had to pay him anyway ya know

  10. Eric Says:

Why all the hate toward Clayton? He hasn’t even been given a chance to work with the new receivers coach, or develop a rhythm with Freeman.

Plus he has a lot of experience and can help the rookies.

  11. Mr. Lucky Says:

You may remember him as being the guy who answered his critics with the following quote:

“I ain’t worried about that,” he said. “People who say stuff, they’re not out there on the field. Nobody who writes (stuff) or says (stuff) can say anything about a player because they’re not on the field. It’s real serious out there. That’s why I don’t pay any attention to that stuff because the mentality is that you make up for it and you come back and catch the next one. I mean, regardless of what they say, the check is in the bank. That’s not changing.”

    Nuff said

  12. zech Says:

Eric r u serious clayton has had all the chances in the world and threw them all away. I was a big fan of clayton but he keeps provining me wrong and makeing me eat my words !

  13. Mr. Lucky Says:

    @Eric

I TOLD you pot-stirrer is MY job around here! 😉

  14. Leighroy Says:

Clayton has ZERO trade value right now, because any team that trades for him, assumes his BOGUS contract. His stats dictate that he should be playing for the league minimum, and I guarantee you that is all he would get if cut and signed by another team later. That is the singular reason why no one will take him right now.

  15. D-Rome Says:

Make Clayton a Tight End and Kellen a wide receiver. Clayton can’t catch and Winslow can’t block. If they do that we’re going to the Super Bowl! Booyah!

  16. Patrick Says:

I think our starting receiver lineup will be:

    #1: Benn
    #2: Williams/ Brown
    #3: Stroughter

#4: Stovall can rotate in when necessary.

I think it’d be a good idea to add a veteran to the mix, just incase one of our guys gets hurt. Even with the talented guys we picked up this weekend, we still have no depth. We also have no veteran leadership on this team.

  17. Leighroy Says:

    Patrick,

Good point on no veteran leadership… our 2009 captains:

    Byron Leftwich
    Jeff Faine
    Chris Hovan
    Ronde Barber
    Will Allen (Special Teams)

    3 of those 5 are gone……

  18. MichiganBucsFan Says:

Hey guys I just noticed on the Bucs website that we signed 3 undrafted rookies out of Tennessee. That tells me Monte is feeding us some insider info, and being that he’s at USC now, a pro football factory, we can look forward to plenty more inside info coming about USC players in the future.

  19. Mr. Lucky Says:

Hey Joe where is that PROMISED INTERVIEW?????

  20. tampa2 Says:

@Eric Got any more of that good? Cause I know it has to be good after what you wrote about Clayton.

  21. adam Says:

we all hate on clayton, but if they dont cut him, let him ride it out throught training camp as a training camp body….hopefully benn and williams will shine and solve our receiver problems…with stroughter, brown, and stovall staying as well…if we keep a 6th maybe it will be clayhands…who knows….i think stovall stays….in his limited time with freebird there seemed to be nice chemistry between the 2…..so as freeman grows maybe stovall will be like an x-faxtor type who comes out of nowhere some games and makes a few grabs or snags a td….hopefully the young guys shine and stovall actually grows into a veteran receiver role of some sort…and brown from philly does the same….clayhands really is the odd man out here no matter how you slice it….he must feel like shit right now…but he is a rich man…maybe that offsets it for him…he really is a failure….and intense failure…nevertheless a complete rich failure….adam from ny

ps hi joe, long time no posting…got sick and tired of talking draft and just wanted it to finally arrive so i took a hiatus

  22. Vince Says:

What?? Could it be that the blocking icon Michael “Stone Hands” Clayton may be unemployed soon?? I think i just got slightly aroused.

  23. Radio Mushmouth Says:

WHy the hell wouldn’t they have cut him with the rest of the players they just purged ?? …some of which (Hovan) were bigger contributors than Clayton ever was.

I think it’s clear they plan on keeping Clayton …..again. LOL

  24. FLorida Girl Says:

Very disappointed the Bucs didn’t cut him with the rest of the purge. If they’re not going to cut him they should move him to the practice squad to ensure the young guys that can catch have time to develop chemistry with Freeman. If they want to win back the fan base and truly show they’re determined to field a winning team, they need to cut him now. Admit the mistake in resigning him and move on without Generation Next!

Practice squad is for rookies and second year players only. He can be on the scout team though 😉
