“He’ll Need To Get It Repaired”

November 1st, 2013

Doug Martin has an injured shoulder that’s kept him out of games and practice for two weeks, and the Bucs are out of the playoff chase. For Joe, that’s a recipe to shut down Martin for the season — a no brainer. He’s a young star with three more seasons left on his rookie contract.

Why risk anything? And what a great opportunity to use/develop Mike James.

Today, Greg Schiano explained that Martin has a strong chance to come back this season if his range of motion can reach the appropriate level and Martin can deal with the pain. Surgery, Schiano implied, is inevitable for Martin but he won’t injure that shoulder further by playing.

“Eventually, he’ll need to get it repaired,” Schiano said today. The injury has been reported to be a torn labrum, but that’s not been confirmed by the Bucs.

Again, Joe doesn’t get it. Even if Martin can’t injure the shoulder more, Joe’s sure Martin could be prone to another injury by compensating for the shoulder.

Here’s Schiano’s full news conference from One Buc Palace. He talks about Martin early in the WDAE-AM 620 audio below.

  1. RCH Says:

Schiano doesn’t care about Martin’s shoulder and playing him because he is playing for his job at this point.

  2. Patrick in VA Says:

This is just like the Shanehans letting RGIII play through an injury. This is a case of a coach who is on the ropes using an injured player when they shouldn’t in an effort to save their job. The only difference is that Martin isn’t being used in a playoff game. He’ll be used at the tail end of a wasted season in an effort to get a few pointless wins so hopefully the Glazers will think the team has finally come around under schiano.

  3. Tampabaybucfan Says:

No wins are pointless or meaningless except in preseason…..that’s why they play the game and get paid to do it…..now if you’re asking me if it is worth risking further injury to Martin…the answer there is no.
Why wake up tomorrow…its pointless…you’re going to die someday anyway….

  4. Chef Paul Says:

I hate to think about the good in losses. Like the draft. I don’t care. It’s a rich draft we will get a great player/QB in the first regardless of what happens the rest of this year. BUT, I will gladly swap wins this year to not ruin this young stud for the future. If 0-16 means Doug doesn’t get hurt more, then bring on the 0-16.

  5. ShutTheBucUp Says:

I for one don’t care if Martin plays, as long as he feels like he can. He’ll have the whole offseason to get it fixed and rehabbed. If the guy wants to play, let him play. Its his shoulder for crying out loud. If it hurts too much, he’ll come out of the game.

You may think theres “no reason for him to play” but you’re not him. You’re mashing a keyboard between slurps of convenience store coffee. If you had put the work in like this guy has, and your pride was on the line, something tells me you’d try and play through and injury.

  6. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ Chef Paul

I’m with you….you can play games to win…but still be smart….try to develop young players for next year, protect you injured….but if you have your eye on a higher draft pick….that isn’t the goal…it is a consolation prize for losers.

  7. Patrick Says:

If we’re 0-13 or 0-14, then bring him back. I would not be able to deal with the humiliation of 0-16.

  8. jo mama Says:

Doug martin has 1 touchdown this year.

    stud? More like DUD

if he can help the team and he is cleared to play then he needs to play.

  9. givemeball Says:

If the Doctors say he is okay to play and Martin wants to play and your Job is on the line, by all means play him. Why wouldn’t you play him?? Why would he care about next year, you guys already have him fired anyway..

  10. Chef Paul Says:

    ShutTheBucUp,

You make good points and I agree with you. I was thinking about it through Schiano’s point of view. Which of course I automatically go to the negative thoughts. But if Dougie wants to play, I wouldn’t complain about him being out there.

This is one bad part of the comments, because I agree with both sides and my tiny little noggin gets confused too easy.

  11. FLBoyInDallas Says:

You know why you don’t get it, Joe? Because unlike you, who are writing off the season and looking forward to a #1 or #2 pick, Schiano is still actually trying to win some games. He’s not thinking like you or other fans and rightfully so. The guy’s job is on the line and he’s not going down without a fight.

So while I believe like most fans that Schiano is in over his head and is not cut out to be an NFL head coach, and needs to be fired at season’s end at the latest, I do have to respect the fact that he’s not giving up and putting his stars on IR before he absolutely has to. If Martin can play, and his shoulder is not in much danger of getting worse by playing, then why the hell wouldn’t you play him? Why give up and lie down before you have to?

I get Schiano’s position but I don’t think yours makes any sense from an organizational perspective. It only makes sense from the perspective of a fan wanting to throw the season away and play for the draft. And that’s not a philosophy, that’s simply quitting.

  12. unbelievable Says:

this stubborn prick is really going to push martin to play again this season? WHY? WORST COACH EVER

  13. BucFanForever Says:

    Flboyindallas,

Schiano is NOT trying to win games. He is trying to prove his system works in the NFL and hoping to win games. Give a real head coach these players and they WILL win games; no trying necessary.

  14. MadMax Says:

The shoulder labrum injury is NOT an easy injury to deal with!Ugg, wish I didnt know.

  15. Adam L. Says:

    DOUG,

Do the world and YOURSELF a favor and ignore EVERYTHING the Bucs are telling you. Get in your car, go to TGH, and get an independent opinion.

    Adam

  16. Paul Says:

Schiano should be charged for making Mike Williams play on a strained hamstring causing him to tear it, requiring surgery.

  17. Paul Says:

I mean charged with a crime, like coercion.

  18. Paul Says:

“But he won’t be injured further by playing with it.”

That’s not true either. If it is a torn labrum, and you don’t get it fixed, it gets torn more and more, becoming frayed.

  19. Bonus Cake Says:

If it is a torn labrum I do not recommend playing him at all. With that injury increases the risk of dislocation. The PT is difficult for the the therapist to get back 100% normal. It’s a tricky injury. No need to take the RISK!

  20. Hawaiian Buc Says:

This is example #1 of why you get rid I F Schiano now. He’s already messed up Mile Williams, now he’s going to put Doug out there and risk further injury. He doesn’t care about the long term health of those guys. I really hope this draft pick is going to be worth it, because we may not have any guys left.

  21. LUVMYBUCS Says:

At some point the F$$KING owner gotta say this dude don’t know what the hell he’s doing. Put your f$$king running back on IR. Let the kid get the best medical attention-then let the young man rehab.

WHAT THE F$$k is going on at ONE BUC. This shyte is for the birds, all the dumb BS that’s coming out of there now. And folks wonder why I keep talking about we need a change of ownership…smh

GLAZER’S MAN UP- AND GET THIS ORGANIZATION BACK ON TRACK-OR SELL IT-
AS LIFE LONG FANS WE DESERVE BETTER.

    GO BUCS!!

  22. Couch Fan Says:

    @Hawaiian

I agree. On one hand, Schiano is fighting for his job so of course he is going to use everything he has left. Can’t fault him for that. Anyone in his position would do the same. The owners need to step in, fire him, get in interim and then let all the injured guys stay on IR and get better for next year. The fans have moved on, the owners need to step in now and give us a reason to continue to support this mess.

  23. BigMacAttack Says:

What a complete Moron. Schiano is a dumba$$. If he needs surgery, why hasn’t he already had it done? Get it over and get the rehab going instead of waiting 2 more months and pushing back his next season even more.

  24. The Dom must go Says:

Sit him and Davin down for the year with Nicks. This year is a wash no matter who the coach is next year. 0-16 playin for Clowney!

  25. Beeric Says:

No way he comes back this season. I’m a month out after having my Labrum surgically repaired and I’m just now down Active Assisted ROM. Schiano and his twist the truth keep it tight lipped media approach (a la bill Bellicheat) have got to go.

  26. Upgrayedd Says:

I get Schiano’s willingness to use these kids up like toilet paper for the sake of his own asss. But if youre a fan, you need to think long term. You want his shoulder worked on Right Now, so that there wont be a question if he’s ready for TC.

Its just unbelievable how much of a d-bag this coach is. Hopefully, this is just his pathetic way of trying to emulate his man-crush Bill Belli.

  27. BucsFan68 Says:

Martin needs to be put on IR; other teams do this as SOP for the player’s long term career. With Martin on IR, Mike James can be evaluated and developed.

  28. James Says:

Schiano can’t save his job, not after all that’s happened this season. Why talk like this dude can do that? Why even give anyone the perception that could happen? Sack him now, and see what an interim can salvage/build before more bad stuff happens.

What if Martin wants to play? You do not want this year’s RGIII, nor do you want to deal with the whole, “Wow! They should have pulled him” thing. Or, “If only Schiano’d been canned, that wouldn’t have happened.” Doug, you’re an honorable stud, but we want to be better off, for sure, at the start of next season, NOT insure a 1-4 start because we’re still waiting for you to get up speed on unforeseen, delayed rehab.

  29. Paul Says:

Martin has a shoulder! -Greg Schiano

  30. MadMax Says:

HEY GLAZERS…IF YOU NO LONGER CARE, JUST SAY IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
