Will Revis Get Bulk Of Cash Up Front?

April 21st, 2013

TCDominik11The Bucs have piles and piles and piles of cash to pay Darrelle Revis under the 2013 salary cap — in the neighborhood of $33 million.

Word on the street says Revis is demanding a ridiculous $15 million annually. Now Joe finds it complete insanity to pay Revis such a ransom. However, Joe thinks it’s much more reasonable if the Bucs can take a large cap hit in 2013, and then pay Revis more reasonable money going forward.

If the Bucs coughed up, say, $25 million for Revis this year, that still leaves money to sign draft picks, Ronde Barber and another cornerback off the street.

In that scenario, the Bucs could potentially be on the hook for Revis another $10 million in 2014 and, say, $5 million in 2015, assuming Revis commanded $40 million guaranteed in total.

That’s not so scary, and it surely wouldn’t prevent the Bucs from re-signing their own players. Josh Freeman and Gerald McCoy already are slotted to make around $10 million each this season.

Joe I JUST said the same thing. Use that cap space and give him a bulk up front. That would be smart

I wouldnt be surprize if the deal that revis gets is quite consistent in the money…say a 5 year deal with 16/15/15/14/13 million a year…hopefully that would stop revis holding out as he will be getting the same amount each year

This is awesome! I no longer care about my wants and needs in the Draft. I’m totally stoked! Revis and Goldson, Ronde and Wright. This may do the trick.

You do realize that every dollar we don’t spend this year carries over to next year, right? So it actually doesn’t matter as much WHEN the money occurs, but how much is guaranteed.

will Barron give up his number 24 to Revis

Really stoked about the Bucs getting better on defense. If we have to pay to be a winner I’m ok with that. We spent years paying players nothing and look where that got us. I’m not the one stroking the checks and I’ve spent to long getting cocked eyebrows when people hear I’m a Bucs fan. Put the pieces in place and let’s make this a respectable team again.

There are several reports one on yahoo specifically that states revis is cool with 12 mil not the 15 that has been speculated. GREAT JOB DOMINIK!!!!

Barber will wait and announce is return later in the week. Barber is classy enough to give Revis “His” Day… I guess the bucs draft party is pointless with no first round pick.

The bucs will make the playoffs. RIGHT THAT DOWN!!!

damn I am ignorant…. Write that down!

Blame it on Florida Public Schools. LOL

Lets just hope our run defense wasn’t a fluke…hahaha I’m kidding Go Bucs

  15. Pete I Says:

Awfully high price to pay. Like most buccaneer moves hope for the best but prepare for the worst. Just to iffy a move. Multiple picks for an acl injured cb? This could be a decision equal to byron leftwich starting…bad.

    Lets hope it works out.

    @buc55

Dom always loads up guaranteed money upfront. Mike will get paid $5-$7 mil. GMC & Free will get paid next year.

Just as the Amish owners have gone ” all in ” with aquiring Keyshawn and Gruden in the past…this move always seemed inevitable. At least it’s pretty exciting if not a bit scary.

Assuming these numbers are right (and they sound pretty darn close to what I have assumed) you have to realize that McCoy and Freeman are already the two biggest cap hits on the team. Unless Freeman takes us deep into the playoffs this year, I don’t see his cap number going up significantly from the 10 mil he is already seeing; same with McCoy. Yes, these guys are going to get good contracts, but they were first round picks that had monster contracts to begin with. Even if McCoy has another monster season, I can’t possibly see him getting more than maybe 12 mil a year; that would only be an additional 2 mil to the cap hit. If Freeman performs well, we can expect him to get a raise to what, maybe 13-15 mil per year? That is another 4-6 mil of cap hit per year as well. The big key will be the fact that those two contracts will probably just have some back loading on them, so that their big cap hit hits in later years when all our other front loaded contracts are tapering off.
