Survival Night For Joe Tryon-Shoyinka

April 26th, 2024

The mind-blowing March words of Todd Bowles on Joe Tryon-Shoyinka took on new meaning tonight when the Bucs drafted a center in Round 1 instead of an edge rusher.

Perhaps you remember the exchange at the NFL annual meeting. You know, when Bowles said few fans know it, but Tryon-Shoyinka plays at least five positions and is a critical chess piece and athlete in the Tampa Bay defense.

JoeBucsFan.com: Coach, a year ago at this time you were talking about how Joe Tryon-Shoyinka kind of left some sacks on the field, wasn’t closing them out. Where did he stand last season with that? Did he leave a lot on the field or was he not really getting there as much as you wanted?

Todd Bowles: He got back there. The ball was out some. Joe’s a very unique player. He’s not going to be the go-around-the-corner Shaq [Barrett] type of guy. Joe can move all across the line of scrimmage and help us with a lot of things. He’s our linebacker. He’s our defensive end. He’s our 3-tech. He’s our part-time nickel. He’s our part-time inside linebacker. He can come from a lot of areas so he has a lot of jobs. And he’s one of those chess pieces that I talked about. So he’s a different type of rusher. He’s very athletic. He can stunt and do a lot of things. He’s not just going to come and bull you and go around the corner. Do we think he can rush the passer? Yes. Has he left some sacks out there? Yes. But he’s made some great plays for us, or set up great plays for other people. And that goes unnoticed because you don’t see him at the finality of the play. So we look for Joe just to come back and do those things for us and do better and better at what he was doing.

Joe’s head spun for weeks upon learning Tryon-Shoyinka was a valuable cornerback, among other things. It sounded like Bowles was just propping up his guy to the extreme and the Bucs were sure to target an edge rusher in Round 1 tonight.

They didn’t.

It’s a “W” for Tryon-Shoyinka, who might be one more draft round tomorrow from keeping his starting job.

    Gone

Can’t really say that they didn’t target an Edge Rusher. All the Edges worth taking were gone.

  3. Dave Pear Says:

    Bowels.

    ROTFL.

Dude sucks. Then, your overly complex schemes suck . So you’ve got him and many others flailing around all over the field being lousy at many positions while being clueless as to their assignments.

Jason needs to demand Todd hire a full time DC on Sunday after the draft is over. Can’t believe this clown gets to be a head coach.

  4. Dave Pear Says:

JTS is a pretty good looking chick, actually. If he had the Roberto Aguayo makeup artist he could do drag shows for the fans before Bucs games. And there’s nothing wrong with that.

  5. MadMax Says:

Get “In living color” Wanda off yo brain Dave….its late and you’re drunk off that scotch LOL

  6. Hearty Dikerson Says:

JTS looks like it should play in the WNBA

  7. Dave Pear Says:

Max! That was Jamie Foxx! I used to hyperventilate laughing to that show.

Naa, JTS is a way prettier babe than Jamie. Kind of like Butthead from the cartoon only shaded differently.

  8. Dave Pear Says:

*I meant Wand looked like Butthead. And I’m off the scotch, onto rye.

  9. Cobraboy Says:

There weren’t any edges left @26 that were not a stretch.

  10. MadMax Says:

    LOL Dave

  11. Dave Pear Says:

    Max you made me chortle.

    I didn’t know I could do that.

  12. firethecannons Says:

JTS is unreliable and unproductive. Hope we are not relying on him next season, he looks like a transgender in this picture.

  13. Esteban85 Says:

Definitely seems like they are looking through rose colored glasses when they look at JTS. I still think we can double dip and get a couple pass rushers in rd 3-4. Don’t know how the NFL views Ellis or Kamara but there are still some dudes at edge out there. I think we need RB, WR and inside linebacker so we shall see how it falls. But great first pick eh Joe?

  14. Esteban85 Says:

The player who should be on trail and riding the pine is Logan Hall. Dude looks like he’s playing on roller skates

  15. BPBucsfan Says:

Reddick could’ve been had for peanuts 🥜. So while we’re pounding the rock in a passing league, the opposing QB’s will be having food delivered to the backfield while they look for a target. Just like Jared Goff last year.

  16. dmatt Says:

Why does Bowles continue to rescue n bail JTS out. Let’s be objective here, the guy is a dud, bust, n bum of a player. He’s made more bonehead plays than game changer plays. He doesn’t have physicality, n lacks the mental aspect of football intelligence, period. Three years n what has he done for the Bucs lately. Please trade him for a sixth round n let’s be done with this disappointment.

  17. #1bucsfan Says:

If Jared Verse was available that would have been the pick to pair with Yaya Diaby!!! I would have traded down for him, or that pick with the rams and gave the JTS for a 4th round pick. No knock on the guy he just doesn’t do it for me, Zyon McCollum would be the next one to go

  19. HA-HA-HA Says:

    Next up, wide receiver.
This always was an offensive draft class.
I understand why the team wanted to draft the position, they just took the wrong guy at the wrong spot. It didn’t help that they repeated their mistake.

  20. Mike Johnson Says:

Don’t see our pass rush improving tremendously/ We had a chance with a couple of free agents but passed on them. Probably gonna have to outscore opponents.

  21. miken Says:

Make no mistake, if there was an edge rusher availible the we would have taken him. There wasn’t so we went O line.

  22. Idroolpewter&red Says:

Who were the Bucs supposed to take at 26 that would have been an instant upgrade over JTS at edge???

  23. Buccup Says:

Trans-Shoyinka does whatever possible to avoid contact. Skipped his whole senior year of college to avoid contact. First rounder and that’s what you get??

  24. 1#bucsfan Says:

The guys who says JTS sucks couldn’t cut it at being a water boy let alone an edge rusher. Has he lived up to his draft status not even close. Why that is it’s because of what biwles says. He plays 5 diff positions. Everyone knows Bowles defense is complex add that with the multiple pos JTS plays yea it makes sense he doesn’t produce that’s more on bowels then JTS. why not just let JTS rush the passer ? Im not saying he’s the man but to say he’s sucks sorry but don’t talk the talk if you can’t walk the walk most of y’all have no clue what it takes to play in the NFL.

  25. MS Bucs Says:

What do Joe Tryon Shoyinka, OJ Howard, Vernon Hargreaves, James Winsron, Devon White, Logan Hall, and Roberto Aguayo all have in common?

Answer: Jason Licht used 1st or 2nd round picks on them.
