Bucs Coaching Decision Could Be Nearing

January 26th, 2012

Joe would take Boise State's Chris Petersen as the next Bucs coach over Mike Sherman in a heartbeat. Erin Andrews in some capacity would be a fine addition as well.

It seems the Bucs are starting to whittle down their list of candidates to fill the void left by jettisoned coach Raheem Morris more than three weeks ago.

Per Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times‘s Twitter feed, the Bucs are turning the corner and heading down the home stretch in their quest for a new coach.

@NFLSTROUD: By Thursday morning, Bucs will begin eliminating candidates. … Mike Sherman indeed had 2nd interview with Bucs today. At least one other known candidate is a finalist, most likely Carolina OC Chudzinski … The list of a few Bucs finalists will be obvious by Thurs morning, but there may be at least one unknown candidate under consideration.

Ah, yes, the old fashioned mystery candidate. The longer this coaching search plays out, the more Joe is convinced (more like hoping) that the Mike Sherman talk is simply a smokescreen while the Bucs land a college coach (Les Miles, Chris Petersen?) or a CFL coach (Marc Trestman?).

UPDATE: Per Woody Cummings of the Tampa Tribune, Tennessee Titans defensive coordinator Jerry Gray was told by Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik this morning, in essence, “Thank you, no.”

Here we go. The suspense is killing me!

  2. Brown Bag Back On? Says:

    Or maybe Marty. . .

  3. Vince Says:

YES to Erin Andrews (even though she’s a Gator). Can’t argue with “talent” like that ;)

  4. Bob Fox Says:

It certainly appears that Tom Clements is out of the running in terms of the next head coach of the Bucs. Unless of course, the Glazers and Mark Dominik decide to fly to Hawaii to conduct a second interview with Clements. Clements is there with the rest of the coaching staff of the Packers to coach the NFC in the Pro Bowl.

  5. Wisconsin Bucs fan Says:

    Anyone but Sherman.

  6. White Tiger Says:

With absolutely no mention of Zimmer – one can only conclude he is the leading candidate…(he said while biting his tongue)…

Chip Kelly made as much sense as Ralph Freidgen…just before he turned us down.

If discipline is high on the list…one would think Zimmer would be “the” guy – but there’s really no way to know.

But I gotta say, the second interview to Mike Sherman has me very worried…I’m suddenly overwhelmed with meh.

  7. justin Says:

google mark trestman and look at his pics wow what a scary guy that is

  8. ClayBURN94 Says:

Please i would love to see Marc trestman as next bucs HC.

  9. flmike Says:

Of the two remaining teams which offense most resembles ours, and who’s OC would be available (hint it’s not McDaniels) I think they may be thinking Kevin Gilbride. God I hope not, but, you never know with the Glazer boys.

    BREAKING NEWS!

    Dateline One Buc Place

Team Glazer and Gentleman Ga Ga, Mark Dominik announce the hiring of Seffner’s Armwood HS Coach Sean Callahan to be the Buc’s Head Coach. Coach Callahan guided the Hawks to the 2011 Florida HS 6A Football Championship. He reportedly signed a five year $600,000 contract. Press conference at 11.

  11. justin Says:

it has begun the bucs jerry gray out of the running for bucs coach

  12. jvato24 Says:

Here we go. We should by next Wednesday for sure!!

  13. Dave Says:

Just like with Raheem and the Josh Freeman pick…. whoever they select, at least give them a couple years to prove themselves before bashing everything and anything about them.

Personally, I don’t want Sherman, I want Zimmer… ideally, Zimmer with Chud or Clements as OC.

No matter who they select though, I will give the guy a chance, unlike many of you.

I still have a feeling there will be someone we have not heard yet as well.

  14. buCncRazy Says:

I really hope Les Miles is the mystery candidate or Rod Marinelli… I know Joe you are a Dominik fan, can you tell us where or how he has been a success?
    Free agents;
Ward failure, Clayton failure, Black failure, Lumpkin failure, Koenen success,Penn meh’,
    Draft;
Freeman success, McCoy unclear,Price unclear,M.Lewis failure,Benn unclear to failure, M Williams 50/50( maybe the next Clayton),Clayborn solid,Bowers unclear,Stocker unclear, Grimm 50/50, the list goes on and on.
Then there’s Blount maybe coaching helps make him a success.

  15. Pete Dutcher Says:

Rick Stroud was really ahead of everyone else when he broke the story on Kelly.

Oh wait…he didn’t even see it coming, did he?

Anything local media reports I take with a grain of salt.

  16. Brad Says:

The only words that will get me excited is Mike Sherman out of the running for the next coach of the Bucs. It could be a great marketing scheme. Tell everyone Sherman is getting interviews and is a finalist. All the fans and media get fired up so whom ever they announce as the next head coach are so relieved that it’s not Sherman, the are excited no matter who it is.

  17. Brad Says:

Rick Stroud is so quick to jump the gun and report first, the Glazers are playing him like a fiddle. He has no idea what’s happening or when the timeline is. The Glazers have no reason to rush at this point. I’d rather they take another week than settle for someone.

  18. eric Says:

Peterson or Gundy. However, both got fat contract extensions recently. I heard faint rumblings that Kelly is still in mix. Remember they went after Parcells twice.

Maybe our new coach can wear a wrestling mask like the old days of Gordon Solie. Take it off on the fifty yard line at the home opener………..

Ironically, we have two Super Bowl winning coachs who like the area so much they live here without coaching the team. Yet, neither do.

    Never boring.

  19. jvato24 Says:

Brad. Exactly how much time do they need????? They had to know Raheem may be gone atleast a month before the season. That is basically 8 weeks of research.

It’s like a hot girl. How long does it take to figure out you want to do the lambada* with her???

  20. Joe Says:

    crazy:

I really hope Les Miles is the mystery candidate or Rod Marinelli

Raheem Morris was more successful of a head coach than Rod “0-16″ Marinelli.

    #realtalk

  21. jLM Says:

Eveytime I google Sherman that combine pic keeps looking at me and makes me feel sick to my stomach. Please Nooooooooo

  22. Brad Says:

@jvato.. I hope they decide today. I was just saying I would rather them take another week if the are settling for a candidate as opposed to actually hiring a guy they really want. I will support just about anyone other than Sherman. I really don’t want a college coach based on the lack of success from most. I’d prefer a good coordinator if it’s not Marty.

  23. RCH Says:

I would like to have the reporter interviewing Chris Peterson.

  24. eric Says:

Mike Sherman must be feeling a bit like Lyndon Larouche.

  25. Jdog Says:

Cool let’s give the media the obvious name first. I think the glazers get off on being secretive. Like anyone expected Jerry gray to be a finalist.

  26. ALSTOTTSMART! Says:

    I’m guessing it’s a Chip Kelly 2.0 situation.

Sherman will lead to a further exodus of season ticket holders.

  27. jvato24 Says:

Brad. If they pick Sherman I will be depressed. If it was gonna be Sherman today I can wait till training camp.

  28. TheProsUseAdvoCare Says:

Exactly how much time do they need?????

If they pick Sherman I will be depressed.

If they pick Sherman I reserve the right to be suicidal for at least one hour, depressed for a day or two, mad for another day and finally I might adjust and start supporting him (what other choice would I have?).

As far as how long do they need, I’m not concerned. They could take another 2-3 weeks and still be fine.

Fans are looking at the more public names out there for coaching staff that are being snatched up, but there are plenty…PLENTY…of guys out there that did badly in HC positions but can excel at lesser positions.

Also…don’t rule out Bruce Arians as head coach or offensive coordinator. He’s had the Steelers offense competitive for years. I would prefer him as OC myself…but I would take him as head coach over Sherman in a heartbeat.

Mooch is a guy that failed badly at head coach…but had success as an OC. He’s out there to consider as OC as well. Herm Edwards is out there to consider for DC.

There are plenty of guys available at the assistant level…the Bucs can take their time picking the right guy to lead the team.

  30. Pete Dutcher Says:

Bruce Arians was OC and won 2 SBs for the Steelers. He would be greatly respected by the players. HC makes a lot of sence for him as well.

  31. bucfanjeff Says:

Marc Trestman might not be bad. I don’t know much about him, but he’s had some success and experience.
I don’t want Sherman or Marty.

  32. mark2001 Says:

    Sherman a smokescreen?

    I hope so.

  33. Pete Dutcher Says:

Can anyone suggest some college coaching names )including assistants) that could make a jump to the NFL?

For example, is there a pro-style offensive coach that would make a good QB Coach in the nfl?

  34. RCH Says:

Stroud is reporting that Rutgers coach Greg Shiano is a possible candidate.

  35. Frank Says:

Mike Sherman will be a disaster. Please, please, please NO. I just can’t understand what they see in him and how they are ignoring the potential fan reaction to this.

I can only hope they are looking at Sherman as an OL coach, as that is about the only thing he can do well.

  36. eric Says:

    Greg Shiano?

  37. I_Miss#40 Says:

Shiano is an interesting candidate, I like what he has accomplished considering the difficulty to recruit top tier candidates to Rutgers.

  38. stevek Says:

    *Schiano*

You know the guy who turned Rutgers around and had Ray Rice.

He is a great Coach, take him in a hear beat.

  39. Brad Says:

I don’t get the sudden fascination with college coaches all of a sudden. I’d much prefer a coordinator with NFL experience. Hiring a coach that most are not going to know much about is not going to get the fans excited. I’m still in the belief we are limited in our search because a solid coordinator (Zimmer) or a good retread (Marty) can’t work with Dominik. That really sucks and the Glazers need to wake up and realize this before it’s too late.

  40. Pete Dutcher Says:

Okay….new rumor…and I would take MIKE SHERMAN over this guy…

    …Greg Schiano…

620wdae is saying they are hearing a rumor that Greg Schiano is in negotiations with the Bucs. Dear god….no. 68–67 as a head coach.

  41. stevek Says:

    Joe,

Dom is no longer allowed to be reffered to as a “Rock Star” if he hires Sherman, deal?

Please, “Rock Star” is 100% nullified if Sherman is hired.

  42. stevie wonder Says:

Stroud reported that he couldn’t get confirmation of Sherman’s second interview…

I think Sherman’s agent is the one pushing Sherman’s name and the bucs, in hope to get him another shot in the NFL.

  43. stevek Says:

    Pete Dutcher,

Schiano is a helluva a lot better than Sherman.

    Be ecstatic for that.

He will right the ship and turn this thing around.

He would be a much much better hire than Sherm.

  44. Pete Dutcher Says:

Actually, upon review…even though 68–67 is Schiano’s overall record, for the last 6 years he has gone 49-28…which I suppose isn’t that bad.

But I know nothing about the guy’s style.

Gray confirmed to no longer be a candidate…by Stroud. He says today Dominick is calling people to let them know if they are finalists.

  45. scott Says:

People are going crazy around here! Greg Shiano? What has he done that deserves him to be considered for a head coaching position in the NFL? He turned around Rutgers? Really? When did they win anything?

  46. FreemanBomb5 Says:

Ken Whisenhunt was offensive coordinator for the SuperBowl against Seattle. He drew up all those crazy reverse pass plays with Ward and Randle El and after that got hired by Arizona. Arians was the assistant offensive line coach under Grimm I believe. Arians would be a huge upgrade to Olson either way. I’d prefer him to Sherman for sure.

  47. Pete Dutcher Says:

    @stevek
Yeah, I know nothing about the man…I saw his overall record and freaked. But most of his losses were early in his career.

  48. jvato24 Says:

    Scott,

You arent falling for the method i guess ???

Push SHerman as lead dog … Hire Schiano or anyone else and everybody rejoices !!!!

    Actually not a bad plan

  49. Pete Dutcher Says:

    It’s almost official:

Greg Schiano is the next head coach of the Bucs.

  50. BucFanFromLa Says:

    Joe,

Les Miles?????? Really!?!?! Come on, Man!

  51. I_Miss#40 Says:

Wasn’t Schiano a Defensive assistant with the bears as well? I think he also had Miami (the U) ties?
