Would You Trade Josh Freeman For Anyone?

January 5th, 2011

josh freeman 092710Bucs quarterback Josh Freeman is, some believe, on the cusp of superstardom.

As a result, Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik believes there isn’t a player of equal trade value for Freeman in the NFL.

Bucs GM Mark Dominik says he wouldn’t trade 22-year-old QB Josh Freeman for any NFL player. If you’ve seen Freeman play, you’d agree.

That’s an interesting thought: Would a team — any team — get equal trade value if they were to trade Freeman?

Joe supposes there are some. Tom Brady springs to mind, though age may be an issue. How about Clay Matthews? Perhaps Patrick Willis?

True, there aren’t many. But Joe believes there might be a few.

you are completely out of touch
Tom Brady. for a second-year, first round pick QB, who looks like a future star.
maybe Brady and two 3rd rounders. maybe.

  2. Travis Says:

Seeing how QB is the most important position on the filed, it would only make sense that you wouldnt trade a Qb for a LB, it would have to be another QB of equal or better value that is near or younger than Freeman. Thats a small crop to choose from (Matt Ryan, Joe Flacco, Sam Bradford). Then i soppose because of how good they are Peyton Manning/Tom Brady, but of course were giving up 10 years of youth there.

  3. Jackson5 Says:

You’d have to be a moron to trade Freeman for anyone. Maybe it’s been so long, Joe doesn’t realize how valuable a franchise QB is.

  4. BigMacAttack Says:

I would consider trading Josh Johnson to San Fran for Patrick Willis if they asked, and especially if Jim Harbaugh is their coach. Their is a buzz in San Fran already about them wanting to aquire Josh Johnson. I know Harbaugh currently has Luck and if he goes to Carolina he could keep his guy, but Harbaugh has been infatuated with Josh Johnson for some time. I don’t know if the Bucs would ever trade JJ, but he is worthy of a starting gig. I would trade JJ and a second round pick to the 49’rs for Patrick Willis.

  5. Derf Says:

Well remember all the yelling and typing about 20 months ago about a guy named, Jay Cutler?

Boy and I GLAD we didn’t do the Cutler trade now!!!!

  6. Travis Says:

Id give our 1st and JJ for Pat Willis, easy.

  7. CreamsiclePasties Says:

Think the Jets would trade Freeman for Sanchez right now? Or the Lions would trade Stafford for Free?

Rah was right after the draft….Freeman was the best QB available, no question

  8. Posey99 Says:

I would trade him for Phillip Rivers

  9. oar Says:

I must say I wasn’t onboard with the Freeman pick (which seems to have been the wrong opinion to have), but I definitely didn’t want us to trade for Jay “need a dumbed down offense” Cutler.

  10. gotbbucs Says:

freeman is untradeable. the only players in the league with equal value are other franchise qb’s, in which case they carry the same value to that team. there arent many, if any, with freemans upside though.

  11. OB Says:

Trading Josh for anyone would qualify you for the funny farm and bankrupcy. Trading JJ would give that team serious firepower, We will have to pay JJ more to stay, but if five is hurt, he is the man.

We have all seen what world class defensive players can do, but you must have an offense to produce points to help out. We have also seen what a world class QB can do with or without a defense. We have both on the cusp, why do something stupid? This team worked and worked no matter who went down and who went in because they were a team and played like a “take no prisoners” team. The “guys” let it all hang out and did they learn, I will bet money no one wanted them in the playoffs because of what they could and did do. We had a lot of injuries but look at what every other team suffered after playing us. Too bad we can’t forward to the OTAs. But next year will come and so will they. Number 5 will have them in a training camp somewhere if there is a strike. I am sure Rhonde will have the defense there for instruction also. These kids are the “New Breed”, no egos just a great team.

  12. K1ngAdroc Says:

    No

  13. lightningbuc Says:

NOONE! Especially for LB’s even if they are studs. Star QBs can lead to the long term success of a team, i.e. Brady and Manning, more so than a defensive player.

  14. d-money Says:

This is a ridiculous discusion. I wouldn’t take anyone for this guy.

Remember when John Lynch suggested Freeman could have a HOF type career and everyone laughed and said he was crazy? Its still very early but it doesnt seem that far fetched now does it?

  15. bucfanjeff Says:

Joe, the very idea of you even posting this crap is ridiculous.
It’s obviously the off-season for Joe.

  16. lakeland bob Says:

I’d trade him for the 85 bear defense if it was still 1985.

  17. Dave Says:

History shows there is NOTHING better than having a franchis QB and Freeman is just that…. at 22.

RBs and WRs come and go. Look at Manning and Brady and Marino etc… It is the Franchise QB that makes a team more than anything else. More than the coach or defense. Occasionally a team is great on defense and good enough on offense to win a SB (Buccaneers, Ravens, Bears) but they will not sustain it unless they have a franchise QB.

Hard to say no to some Brady & Manning but, because of age and potential, I don’t think I would trade him for anyone.

I do think they should try to trade Ruud for a 3rd and Josh Johnson for a 3rd. This way they can draft tow DEs, a MLB, an O-Lineman, and a change of pace back OR a DB all in the first 3 rounds.

  18. Ash Says:

Stud LB’s come around a lot more often then a true Franchise QB

  19. Tommy Boy Says:

Ash very good point. There is literally no other player in the NFL that I would be willing to trade Freeman for.

  20. Amar Says:

I’ve said it before and that was in the middle of the season on facebook: I wouldn’t trade Josh Freeman for ANYONE in the history of the NFL.

  21. Ibleedpewter Says:

There is no way I would trade Josh Freeman for ANYONE right now. I do not even think I would trade Josh Freeman for Manning or Brady or Rivers or Brees, and their first round pick. He is only 22 and has a very good possiblity to be in their leage in the next 2 years or less.

Look at the Packers with Farve. No matter what their team looked like overall, he always gave them a chance at making the playoffs. I feel like that will be Freeman for us. Especially having a 22 year old that prepares in the off season like he has been in the leage for 10 years. It is amazing and Raheem and Dominik are the man for choosing him.

  22. notorious_BUC Says:

Hey Joe has to try to get discussion flowing on something and this hook was well baited.

  23. SkookumSmitty Says:

Agreed, Notorious. He trolled us GOOD this morning!

  24. oar Says:

Give a man a fish and he will eat for the day. Teach a man to fish and he will sit in a boat and drink beer all day!

  25. Derf Says:

Hey Joe would you trade Freeman for Rachael Watson?

  26. admin Says:

    Joe here,

How much time with Ms. Watson?

  27. Bucman22 Says:

I don’t think u trade a franchise for any other position..I’d take Brady or manning and maybe Rodgers but that’s about it..Willis is a baller but did u hear his name alot when we played San Fran, not to say he didn’t play well but the impact a qb especially a franchise qb has on a team is immeasurable..

  28. BigMacAttack Says:

Who said anything about trading Freeeman for Willis? It is insanity to think of trading Freeman for any one or any group of players. The 49’ers problem, like some other teams is that without the QB nucleus, you aren’t going to get very far. There are only a handful of Franchise worthy QB’s in the NFL to begin with. Bradford might be one soon. Sanchez is a joke and Satfford wasn’t that great to begin with, and the Lions overpaid for him big time. Josh Johnson, although young and still somewhat inexperienced is better than 70% of the starting QB’s in the League right now. He is a valuable asset but some teams should look hard at trying to get the Bucs to trade him, but he won’t come cheap and rightfully so. JJ has 3 years now and is worth more than Luck IMO.

  29. gitarlvr Says:

    Patrick Willis? Really? try again.

  30. Derf Says:

Hey BigMac – I’m not so sure about Josh Johnson. Don’t get me wrong I LOVE the kid but JJ is NOT, I repeat NOT a pocket passer. JJ is more a QB along the lines of Michael Vick when he was with the Falcons – quick to hightail it out of the backfield.

  31. Derf Says:

Hey who says you don’t trade a Franchise QB?

Denver did that with Cutler the Cry-Baby to Chicago

Philly did that with McNabb to Washington…..

Well maybe with THOSE examples it would be smart to keep Freeman 🙂

  32. Jbyrd Says:

    NO

  33. jaytek74 Says:

Would I trade Josh Freeman??? HELL NO!!!

  34. notorious_BUC Says:

How much time with Ms. Watson? Given joe’s “affinity” towards her, I’d guess about 2 minutes.

  35. BuccoBill Says:

@ Derf: Don’t forget that JJ has been training under the same coaches as Free over the last year and a half and also has Free to compete with. I doubt he is the same QB that started for us after we Booted Byron “The Slug” Leftwich. Worth way more now. And I would think a much more solid QB. I Free thinks so (and he speeks very highly about JJ) then I’m inclined to take his word for it.

@notorious: That was just all sorts of wrong. LMAO

  36. BigMacAttack Says:

After much thought and very careful deliberation, I would not trade Josh Freeman for Rachel Watson. It was very close and came all the way down to an 8’th level tie-breaker. Yes, I had to flip a coin.

  37. BigMacAttack Says:

For the record, Josh was Heads and she was Tails, all the way.

  38. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    Not no, but hell no
