“Are You Scared Of The Stage?”

February 17th, 2015

WinstonMariota

The drama is building for the decisions. No, not what the Bucs will do with their premium draft picks.

Will Marcus Mariota and/or Jameis Winston throw this week at the NFL Scouting Combine?

It’s unknown, but answers are coming in a matter of hours.

Quarterbacks arrive in Indianapolis tomorrow to register and get a hospital pre-exam and X-rays. On Thursday, they will be measured and poked by doctors, and meet the media. Then there is Friday’s psychological testing, strength testing and a meeting with the player’s association. Grilling by teams in private meetings is mixed in during the week, and Saturday is the televised on-field workout — if Mariota and Winston choose to throw.

The Associated Press claims Mariota’s sprained shoulder, injured during the national title game, is much improved and he might throw. Winston has yet to commit. Joe speculates he’s waiting to see what Mariota will do.

Tiki Barber, speaking on CBS Sports Radio, said today it’s important for prospects to step up and compete. He acknowledged Mariota might not “want to show a deficiency” because of an injury. But Barber said that is a slippery slope.

“But if you use it as an excuse, meaning, ‘I don’t want to put myself out there,’ then it leads to questions from general managers,” Barber said. “No. 1, ‘Are you scared of the stage?’ But No. 2, you gotta perform. You got to be in situation in a regular season NFL game where things are going to be uncomfortable. And trust me, the combine is uncomfortable. They parade you around in your underwear basically. They measure every single inch of you. … All these other things.”

Barber went on to say some combine strength tests on machinery is uncomfortable and can leave an athlete sore, affecting his on-field performance and confidence.

Joe really hopes both guys throw. It doesn’t mean much in a controlled environment, but it’ll be awfully fun to compare.

Neither will throw and jeopardize their current draft stock. And why should they? Each has a Heisman so what is there to gain?

Save that for the relative comfort of their respective pro days with WR’s they are comfortable with.

  2. Pickgrin Says:

I would be surprised if either throws. There is no advantage to gain really. If anything changes because they throw – it would be for the bad – not good.

  3. Couch Fan Says:

it would be in both of there best interests to throw. Personally, I’d like them both to show some balls and compete at the combine. If i were in there shoes I’d be doing everything I could to show I was better than the other.

  4. JFat - Just Draft a QB Says:

It’d be cool as hell if they both said F-it and went out and started slinging the ball. Probably won’t happen tho.

  5. al121976 Says:

    Sam Bradford threw

  6. buddhaboy Says:

tim tebow got black balled from the nfl for being a distraction , and a christian

  7. 87ForWinstonNOMariota Says:

Couch..thus is why I think Winston will throw. He’s too much of a competitor.

  8. 87ForWinstonNOMariota Says:

    buddhaboy..Tebow can’t throw a football.

  9. Eric Says:

I don’t think they should invite guys to the combine who refuse to throw.

    Seems silly.

    Too much money to lose.

    Sad, but true.

  11. lion Says:

The fact the throwing can’t help any of their draft stocks is the reason both will most likely not throw? Why do something that can only hurt your draft stock? That’s why lower rate QBs have everything to gain from throwing, because it can actually improve their draft outlook. If you are slated to go number one or number two, what exactly is the benefit?

  12. Tampabaybucfan Says:

These guys are probably going #1 & #2……the only thing that can happen is probably bad……If I were advising them, I’d advise them to save their throws for Pro Day & private workouts…..

  13. ChessMaster Says:

Draft Winston, and pay off Joe Redner to keep him out of the clubs.

  14. JoeJoes Fungi Nails Says:

Won’t really matter ,they are both going to horrible teams and going to take a beating like they’ve never imagined…both phyiscal and mental…

  15. Skyline Crew Says:

No reason for either of them to throw and doubt either one will throw. They can throw at their pro days for the teams. Typically QBs who are at the top of the draft don’t throw (Newton is an outlier). The rest didn’t throw.

  16. dmatt Says:

At this point the worst they both can do is throw up. The combine has become as much commercialized as Christmas. Despite how they both fair during combine, when it’s imagepng_0.pngall said n done, all will b forgotten n all the hype n focus will be on who throws n performs the best during the first preseason game. Chill out folks, the real Combine day begins during preseason’s Compete n Performance day. That’s ur final test… flunk it n the combine don’t mean a hill of beans.

  17. lion Says:

    dmatt:

Yeah except for the fact you will have reporters and media folks scrutinizing and writing bad things about you for the months leading up to preseason if you do actually have a bad day. No one wants to deal with that circus and would only act as a huge distraction. So that logic that it’s no big deal is false.

  18. ddneast Says:

Oh shudup Buddhaboy. The bow got cut because he was lousy and could barely throw in a pro style offense. There are plenty of Christian in the NFL, Gerald McCoy being one of them. Check at the end of the game, the very devout Christians gather to say a prayer after the game.
Tobow got to be a narcissist.

  19. Mr lucky Says:

If you don’t throw then don’t go!

The NFL fines players like Lynch for not talking and this is an NFL event so…..

I’m tired of hearing how it affects their stock in the draft – that is all bullspit. Can you imagine Brett Farve or Peyton Manning not throwing at the combine?

If you wanna get paid you better darn well play the game!

    Nuff said

  20. louden Says:

I predict (though i am everything but sure about it):

    Winston is going to throw.
Media (including “experts”) will vow about his arm
    Mariotta won´t throw
Media will display how bad Winston realy wants to play football, and its all about football to him, and he will do whatever it takes

(just like about having sex.. even if it wasn´t rape.. SHE didn´t like it one bit appearantly – and he felt so good about it – that he had to shout it in front of a lot of people, to make sure everyone knows about it and disgrace her in public.. for the appearently big failure to hang out with him.. you see how great his character is?)

to become a great football player – and that is the only important thing..

Mariota is scared – for not throwing
Winston is the guy who truly wants it etc.. and is capable of it etc…
+ he talked soooo nice (i bet it..)

= casual mind is won over

  21. iamkingsu Says:

Mark my words Jameis will throw because that’s the type of competitor he is!

  22. bucs4lyfe Says:

mariotta needs to throw more than Winston, he’s the one with the on field issues. Winston needs to spend the entire combine in the interview rooms

  23. louden Says:

its one thing to make a bad decission (Brooks, Lovie Smith)

its another issue having bad character / false attitude; i dont know exactly what it is with him, since those two things are a little different.

either way, winston with his bad Charactre or false attitude is NOT a figure i want my children root for; for damn sure, neither want I..

He´s a clown at the age of 20.. i for one wouldn´t consider this a kid

same as Mike Williams as his “caveman crew” aren´t exactly what i would want my children to become one day..

  24. bucs#1 Says:

Of course Jamarcus Winston wants to throw at the combine, he can’t throw interceptions there

  25. NuckinFutz Says:

If I was one of the top QB’s in the draft, I would not throw at the Combine. You’d be throwing to recievers that you don’t know running patterns that you don’t kmow.
The QB’s that now throw at the Combine are the lesser known guys or the higher round guys trying to get attention or prove they belong with the big boys

  26. bucs4lyfe Says:

there’s only one of those two that has to fear throwing at the combine and it ain’t Winston….be glad when April 30th comes so some of these haters can go find another team to complain about…Jacksonville jaguars bandwagon is light if you don’t like Winston there’s more than enough room I promise

  27. 87ForWinstonNOMariota Says:

“(just like about having sex.. even if it wasn´t rape.. louden just go away when the Bucs draft him then. Seeing how you have no clue as to why he said what he said in the student union.

It’s like I’ve been saying people make this stuff up on their own and come to these conclusions on their own, not ever looking at the facts of each “incident”.

  28. Barry Says:

#TheCreepyCrab waiting to see if Mariota throws doesn’t show leadership, now does it?

  29. StPeteBucsFan Says:

If i were in there shoes I’d be doing everything I could to show I was better than the other.

This is not about competitive spirit! This is about one thing and one thing only!!!

$$$$$$$$$$$ Yep millions are on the line here. These guys will do whatever their agents tell them to do. And so would YOU and so would I.

This is not fun and games for these two guys. This is their ENTIRE financial future! Nobody should blame them for doing whatever is in their best interest.

I seriously doubt anybody on this blog is going to take up a collection if one of them throws and drops his stock by a million or two.

  30. Skyline Crew Says:

Winston doesn’t want to throw because it will show his bad mechanics and he might throw interceptions there as well. Mariota doesn’t need to throw. The only onfield question he has is that he hasn’t taken a snap from under center. Guess what, won’t do that at the combine either. They throw to wide open receivers, we already know both these QBs can do that. They won’t be throwing against a defense so what is the point? We know both have a strong arm. When they at their pro days you will see more than what you would at the combine. They are both accurate so won’t see anything different at the combine. Like I said, if Winston throws you will see his bad throwing mechanics. He needs to show he can change it. It might look better, but so did Tebow’s before a game. During a game he reverted back to his throwing motion. Hopefully Winson won’t do that.

  31. Dewey Selmon Says:

Never understood the whole QB needing his WR’s to throw to. A 10 yard dig is the same , a post pattern is the same. 15 yard out is the same. I don’t see why a QB can’t sling the ball to anyone who lines up out wide.

  32. Couch Fan Says:

This is not about competitive spirit! This is about one thing and one thing only!!!

$$$$$$$$$$$ Yep millions are on the line here. These guys will do whatever their agents tell them to do. And so would YOU and so would I.

    —————————————————–
Yup and I agree. But When there is no #1 clear pick if you dont choose to compete every oppertunity given to you then you are wasting time and possibly money. Winston doesn’t need to throw to prove any questions about his arm, he just need the good pub that would come with doing something most participants of his caliber dont do. Mariota on the other hand should throw to try to answer some of the questions about their arm.

As far as the agent goes, I would do whatever it was that I thought was in my best interest. Agent can put his 2 cents in but would i blindly follow his advice? Hell no. From your statement I guess you would. Winston needs all the good pub he can get at this point.

  33. Eric Says:

These guys have been throwing the ball all their lives, why not just do it.

  34. Barry Says:

I don’t know the Combine rules, but is a team allowed to leave #TheCreepyCrab alone in a room with a baked ham to see if he has sex with it?

  35. Lion Says:

funny you should mention mechanics Skyline, as you clearly have no clue what you are talking about. Mariotas mechanics are pretty damn awful. Jameis mechanics have been steadily improving and still need some work, but no where near as bad as Mariota.

  36. rayjay1122 Says:

They say a picture says 1000 words. Well if the picture in this article relays anything, I would see Winston running for his life and Mariota looking like a pocket passer. Funny what can be taken out of a picture. I am pulling for us to take Mariota, but the conclusions drawn by some based on pictures such as the one where he looks over weight are just nonsense. Obviously we all know that Mariota ran more in the Oregon offense than Winston did at FSU.

  37. Skyline Crew Says:

Haha Lion you make me laugh. Mariota has a nice quick release, while Winston has a long drawn out motion. You crack me up.

  38. MadMax Says:

I always thought the strength tests like benching 225 as many times as you can was stupid. I used to lift heavy a lot in my twenties and I know how a change up like that in your routine (if you go full beast mode) can make you sore and affect other drills that day and the coming days.

Watch Scherff and Collins in the strength drills, those guys are beasts.

  39. Bucs#1 Says:

Winston looks like a God. Too bad it’s Buddha

  40. Skyline Crew Says:

    @MadMax

Agreed on the benching. I think they should save that for the end of the combine. Doing it near the beginning is ridiculous. They are going to be tight and sore and it could impact their mechanics as lineman.

  41. Couch Fan Says:

    @MadMax

I think thats kind of the point. Get them mentally and physically exhausted so there true character comes out then get them on the field.

  42. White Tiger Says:

Agree with the idea that there is nothing to be gained by either QB actually throwing at the combine. I would suspect that the agents for each are telling them NOT to throw until their respective Pro Day, in a controlled environment when both can be assured of health and a favorable/familiar environment.

Marriota’s sprained shoulder probably isn’t 100% – but he’s already demonstrated that he could/did play hurt if necessary. The media probably benefits by getting some mileage out of whether the sprained shoulder A) is an excuse…then B) perhaps more serious than initially reported…but I can’t help but think it actually puts a bit more pressure on Kid Fameis because he doesn’t have an injury excuse – just that he’s not throwing because he won’t be put under a microscope if his competition isn’t going to be…but it’s psychological at best and probably nothing more than a good way to generate interest during an otherwise slow news period.

It does kind of take Kid Fameis one edge away: if neither throw, then Kid Fameis vaunted arm strength and “tight window” throwing won’t be on display…and actually forces the competition in areas that are marriota’s strengths – that is if both compete in all of the remaining drills – at least as far as the underwear drills go…but Kid Fameis has demonstrated enough movement that it’s not even a concern…even for me…considering that Koetter CAN call both types of spread attacks (spread-option/WCO vs air-raid/WCO).

I’m not really interested in the combine for the QB drills – my interest in the combine is the set of drills that reveal a sleeper DE (like JJ Watt). Drills that highlight the “Kirwan Explosion Index (bench-press + Vertical Jump + Standing Broad Jump) – and then only as it relates to the set of numbers derived from a players “Production Number” (number of sacks + Tackles For Loss : total games played).

I also think those two can isolate good targets for 4-3 LB’s.

..but I digress, the topic was the manufactured drama the media will be mulling over as to whether the QB’s will throw, and if not…what’s the real story behind why they won’t…

@joe’s just given you what the next 14 topics will be leading up to 1) Why the underwear olympics don’t matter – and then another 14 about the real reason Marriota’s not throwing…and why it’s reasonable therefore that Kid Fameis shouldn’t throw…

  43. lurker Says:

“Winston looks like a God. Too bad it’s Buddha”

that is such an ignorant and anti-buddhist comment. you have no idea of what you speak, just your western, narrow-minded view of an eastern religion.

  44. Bucs#1 Says:

Winston’s got a weight problem. Can’t weight to eat

  45. White Tiger Says:

I thought it was pretty funny.

    …so did the laughing buddha.

  46. rayjay1122 Says:

I really hope that Mariota throws and gives the doubters some confidence that his game will translate to the NFL. I do NOT have anything personal against Winston and my doubting his ability to be a franchise QB has nothing to do with off the field issues. I just do not view him as a good QB and I am baffled by what the majority of people see in him. He seems slow to me. He plays slow and has a lethargic aura about him. I think he is going to be extremely average at best in the league. Now is that worth the #1 pick? Not in my opinion. We all know exactly what to expect from Winston on and off the field. Mariota is still shrouded in some mystery but he sure does play fast both physically and mentally. We have a majority of homers though who are stuck on Winston. If we take him, then I will still be a Bucs fan and will obviously want him to excel but I highly doubt that he will. If we take him, I hope he makes me eat crow but I see a lot more pizza and beer…a lot of beer while watching him stink up the joint. Winston is the most over rated QB prospect in the last 10 years….IMO.

  47. Bucs55 Says:

    ————————————————————————–

LOL Skyline. We know you prefer Mariota – but making stuff up doesn’t help your cause. Winston has a “strong arm”. Mariota’s arm strength is considered adequate but not above average. He’s not gonna be hitting a streaking Mike Evans in stride on a 50 yard bomb like Winston is capable of.
Also – taking snaps from center is NOT the only on field question scouts have about Mariota. Winston may not have the prettiest throwing motion but he gets it out of there pretty quick and the results of his throws are very effective. Winston’s accuracy is definitely considered superior to Mariota’s. Ok – so now cue the ignorant interceptions response…

  50. Bucfan4life Says:

I just spent a good 30 minutes watching Mariota highlights. I have been a Winston supporter all along but now I honestly think the Bucs can’t go wrong with either guy. I gotta say Mariota is electric and has an extremely quick release. He actually does throw a pretty nice deep ball as well. I have to admit, 30 minutes of watching clips on YouTube has me excited about the possibility of having him or Winston. We are all Buc fans so instead of fighting about this day in and day out let’s just be excited that the Bucs will be a vastly improved team on April 30th. To my fellow Winston supporters, just spend a little time watching some of MM’s highlights. I think that kid could be special too.

Why is it ignorant to talk about his interceptions ???? Aint that one of many thing we are suppose to judge a qb for ??? O i forgot none of them were his fault they were all vecause of the receivers been so young smh if youre gonna judge atleast be fair to both qbs not just youre preference

On his young receivers but ive seen 10 picks trown him tryin to force passes or just making stuped dumb plays like the one he trew against Notre dame back pedaling and throwing stuff you dont even want you highschool qb doing horrible reads what are you guys lookin at ???

    Pickgrin

Why is it ignorant to talk about his interceptions ????
    ———————————————————————–

Its not – its part of the evaluation. Its one of the legitimate questions about Winston’s on field play because the # of Ints in 2014 was high. I meant specifically that it would be ignorant to respond to the statement regarding Winston’s passing accuracy with the come back of – “He’s not accurate at all – look how many interceptions he threw”

Yes the # of INTs was high in 2014 and yes he needs to work on discerning when to try threading the needle in a tight window and when not to. The very fact that he CAN do that like no other QB in any recent draft is what’s exciting. Not focusing on the # of interceptions. He’s gonna have some Ints playing gunslinger – but he’s going to make more big plays than bad ones doing it. I hate to point out the obvious – but not 1 of those 18 interceptions lost a game for FSU.

Jimbo Fisher said only 8 of Winston’s Ints in 2014 were actually the QBs fault. You can dispute that if you want but that’s what he said and the coach knows better than anyone because he knew the play called and who had what responsibility.

Even in your own example links – only 3 of the 5 plays shown were passes he shouldn’t have thrown:

Example link 1 – No question – pass should not have been thrown. But then Jameis gets his team the ball back by punching the ball out and forcing a fumble as he tackles the interceptor on the return. He looks like a LB making a play like that after the turnover. LOL. Just more evidence that dude is a good FOOTBALL PLAYER.

Example link 2 – The throw was perfect and in perfect position considering the tight backside coverage. The receiver did not make a play on the ball at all and the DB who had tight coverage from behind was able to get the ball.

Example link 3 – Forced throw. bad decision

Example link 4 – Accurate pass out in front of the receiver with tight man coverage trailing. DB made a great play and managed to get a finger tip on it and tip it up in the air for a team mate to pick.

Example link 5 – yea – that’s ugly. Worst play of the whole season from the QB.

Jameis Winston is not perfect. No QB is. People think Luck is the best new thing going. Well he is basically – and he throws quite a few interceptions too – but also wins a lot of games with not a great supporting cast. This is the type of player and talent you are looking at in Jameis Winston. He will win A LOT of NFL games. It might take him a year or 2 to get completely dialed in to all the NFL adjustments – but once he does – Winston will be a badass NFL QB, top 10, probowler – the works. Wait and see. And then be glad for the next dozen years that your team had the foresight to recognize his potential greatness and act on it amidst great scrutiny.

  56. Pat Says:

    1. So now he’s playing Defense?
2.And that was Richard Sherman back there?
3.We agree on this one, typical JF5 chuck.
    4. And that defender was Revis with the tipped ball?
    5. Pls see #3

And that running commentary sounds like de ja vu a la JR2 revisited.

  57. Pat Says:

Pickgrin the Analyst, pls learn from your peers below:

“JaMarcus Russell is going to immediately energize that fanbase, that football team — on the practice field, in that locker room. Three years from now you could be looking at a guy that’s certainly one of the elite top five quarterbacks in this league. …You’re talking about a 2-3 year period once he’s under center. Look out because the skill level that he has is certainly John Elway-like.” — ESPN’s Mel Kiper

“The workout Russell had was Star Wars. It was unbelievable.” Then-Tampa Bay Bucs coach Jon Gruden

“If you had to choose a quarterback, who would you pick, JaMarcus Russell or Brady Quinn? Both have strengths and glaring weaknesses. It goes down to which guy is most coachable. I might take Quinn for that reason. But, pure skill with a ton of work to do, it would be Russell. If you put a gun to my head, I would pick Russell. But he comes with a lot of risk.” — ESPN’s Merril Hoge

“This year, I can’t get over how good and talented JaMarcus Russell is. It just blew me away. If I had the first, second, third, fourth, fifth pick in that draft, I would be tearing apart his personal life trying to figure out whether or not I could trust this kid with $10-million … From a physical skill set perspective, I’ve never seen a college quarterback with more ability than Russell. You put the tape on and it’s frightening. The only thing that’s going to keep [Russell] from being great is him. What it comes down to is you’ve got to figure out whether or not this kid wants to be the best quarterback in football. If he wants to be the best quarterback in football, he can be.” — NFL Network’s Mike Mayock

“JaMarcus Russell, my man. The Raiders finally get their big arm. And he’s a good kid, strong kid, smart kid. He’ll be a big-time player. If I’m the Raiders, that’s who I pick. That’s pretty easy.” — FOX’s Terry Bradshaw

  58. Pickgrin Says:

Sorry Pat – but Jamarcus Russell is not valid a valid comparison at all.

The only similarities are large frame, big arm and the fact they are both black.

The things Russell didn’t have that Jameis Winston does are the big difference makers. Heart, intensity, competitiveness, natural leadership, Football intelligence, True love of the game and willingness to work his ass off to be the best QB possible.

Russell had none of those things. As soon as he signed his rookie deal and was guaranteed $30M – he was DONE! He didn’t try, he didn’t care, he ballooned to 300 lbs – Russell was a joke – and the #1 overall pick was out of the league in 4 years. Are you suggesting this is the path Jameis Winston will follow?

Think Again! The Bucs are gonna draft Winston because they see greatness in him just like many others do. And Winston will prove all of his doubters wrong.

  59. Bucfan4life Says:

Just Pat curious but why all the quotes regarding Jarmarcus Russell? I believe he will not be drafted this year. Based on your brilliance above I guess the Bucs should not pick anyone because the analysis will be wring and whoever we take. Just pass on the pick and save the money? Or are you saying don’t dare draft the black QB because obviously all black QBs = Jamarcus Russell?

Obviously the experts are wrong about Mriota and Williams as well so I guess the Bucs are screwed.

  60. JVNootz Says:

Mariota could go out and throw lasers and great passes with no INTs. Winston could go out and throw pin point passes but flub a few and throws 10 picks. All the readers would say is”Jameis made the tough throws”. LoL. I’ve never heard such silly reasoning till Winston came along. So Eli’s 30 INTs two years ago were “making the tough throws”. When you throw tons of INTs, I say you made the DUMB throws. The wrong reads, and you were OVER CONFIDENT. When your TD /into ratio is that of video game numbers, you made the SMART throws, off the right reads and still made them confidently.

Why make the throws you don’t HAVE to make? Mariota has shown all the skills and ability necessary to make the leap to the NFL. Especially with a tailored offense, as Big Ben had, as Montana had, and as Tom Brady had (all early on).

No, we have MG8 and possibly BP14 too. Like caveman MW19, once he lands the payload, his twitter account will light up like a Christmas tree. It’s called the jekyll&Hyde syndrome.

JV you just made possibly the worst statement in your defense of Matiota. It is tiring to go over this again but the major knock on Mariota is precisely that he has NOT “shown all the skills and ability necessary to make the leap to the NFL.” Lovie Smith will not be running a spread option gimmick offense so therefore we really don’t know at this point if Mariota can make it at the next level.
