Jameis Watch: “Extraordinary”

December 27th, 2014

jameis 1211

Crab-legs-stealing, BB-gun-shooting, obscenity-hollering, Heisman-Trophy-winning, national champion James Winston, the pride of Florida State University, continues to look like a much better quarterback prospect than Mike Glennon and Josh McCown.

It’s Joe’s daily nugget on the Jameis Watch, celebrating the best quarterback to wear No. 5 ever in the state of Florida.

Just think of the word “extraordinary.” It means remarkable, exceptional, sensational. That is the word that Charlie Campbell of WalterFootball.com used in his breakdown of Florida State quarterback, Jameis Winston.

Campbell wrote a great deal on Winston and believes, if you are looking for a quarterback, you can start and stop with Winston.

As a pocket passer, Winston is extraordinary. He is a phenomenal in the pocket and can carve up a defense. Winston has very good field vision and does a superb job of scanning the field while working through his progressions. It is an innate ability that Winston has displayed from the very beginning of his tenure as a starter. He hangs tough in the face of the pass rush, steps into throws when he’s going to get hit, and moves well in the pocket while keeping his eyes downfield. Sources say that Winston has a good football I.Q. and will impress teams in pre-draft meetings.

Winston also has great anticipation and timing. For example, he has had pressure in his face but still throws passes before receivers make their break so the ball hits them between the numbers as soon as they turn around. Those are phenomenal throws for any level of football. Winston also throws some brilliant passes into tight windows to beat good coverage. When plays break down, Winston can make plays with his feet, and if defenses leave it open, he will hurt them on them on the ground.

What more can Joe add? Winston very well could be the savior of the Bucs franchise. Do the right thing Bucs, lose tomorrow. Reach for the stars. Grab Winston.

  1. Bucs Fan Since '76 Says:

He’s the only choice. We are going to need a tough, physical, pocket passer to survive next year. To the Boys – Please fire Lovie, hire Polian or McKay, sit back, and relax.

  2. Stu Laake Says:

    Ditto…JW is “extraordinary.”

  3. Jay Cutler Says:

    Meh..
    Not impressed with Winston.
My o-line was as bad as you guys was yet everyone blames me.
You people will be amazed what I can do with a little protection.

  4. Bucnut2 Says:

Joes, Campbell is hardly a draft expert. 2 years ago he was writing for pewter report and was a josh freeman advocate. You are really starting to reach guys. Luv you both but this is getting old. There is WAY too much risk with the 1 or 2 overall pick. If we can trade down and get a bunch of picks and he slides, I’m on board. If we take him 1 or 2 we have put the franchise at risk. Many nfl agree!

  5. Skyline Crew for Mariota or Winston Says:

    Mariota

  6. Bucnut2 Says:

    Nfl execs

  7. Wes Says:

Mariota & Winston are both good quarterbacks but I give the edge to Winston (on the field)so if the Bucs along with Brooks feel they can help control the off field stuff I am good with Winston but if not I am fine with Mariota he may need a little more work working from the pocket but he will get it and be a fine quarterback as well.
Now we just need L&L to pick a quarterback.

  8. Tom Edrington Says:

So how did Winston look against Florida, it has the most NFL-calibre talent on defense of all the teams they played?

Winston didn’t listen to Brooks as a college kid, what makes you think he’ll even fit Brooks into his social schedule if someone dumps a few million in his lap?

Has the ability to really balloon weight-wise…..

Can’t wait to see both of them, Winston and Mariota on the same field. Will look forward to the “Jameis Watch” after that game.

  9. 1trubuc Says:

@ BF76′ I like that later choice of McKay back running our Team, but it’s a pipe dream. I am A Florida State alumni and I am just dreaming and praying the Bucs brain trust do the right thing and select Winston. The Bucs would be years ahead with him @ quarterback. IMHO

  10. Vegasbuccaneer Says:

Like al said just lose baby……l

  11. BucNears Says:

[The email address you used gets you banned right off the bat. Funny how people don’t remember Joe labeling Josh Freeman “Bust in Waiting” before he was drafted. Strange, huh, for Joe not knowing what he is talking about? How come you have your panties in a wad over Johnny Football instead of a worse quarterback, Josh McCown? Funny how Bill Polian and Gil Brandt also lobbied for Manziel. — Joe]

  12. ruggyup Says:

That’s it! Follow the Johnny $$$sign pattern and be thrilled. $$$Sign is back getting fined for being late for his hammy therapy. J Seafood can do even more. You go Bucs!

I was going to ask if it was the same PR guy. Really, that doesn’t make him a great source.

On the other hand, he DOES make a good sales pitch, because he almost convinced me 😉 Almost.

Honestly, I don’t know which is going to be the best. I know I don’t want injuries all the time and I want a good leader and great player. If both of them can do those things, it doesn’t matter to me which we get.

Big Ben had plenty of issues coming out of college, and he hasn’t been much of a problem since. I have to wonder…if Winston was white, would so many here still think he couldn’t behave in the NFL?

Personally, I just want a valid shot at a true franchise QB, and both of these guys have strong and weak points.

  14. Dean Says:

Here’s what scares the crap out of me. Let’s look at what we need:
    Quarterback
At least 2 offensive lineman (preferably) three.
    Slot receiver
    That’s 4 or 5 needs on offense.

    Now comes defense:
    Top defensive end (Pass rusher)
    Middle linebacker that can cover
1 Cornerback that can fill Rhonde’s shoes and has lightning reflexes.
That’s a minimum of 3 guys on defense.

    Special Teams:
    New punter
top return guy (hopefully, both punts and kickoffs)
That’s a minimum of 2 guys on special teams.

All together now, guys. That adds up to 9 or ten impactful bodies to make this team any where near competitive.
Where do they come from? Only 3 spots are going to come from the draft. The rest are simply depth.
So that leaves 6 or 7 spots that need to be filled through free agency and trades. You already know our great record in FA last year. So, do you have confidence that the braintrust can bring in 6 or 7 top players to fill those holes?
The numbers are just too overwhelming. I would guess the best that can be done is hit on 6 total spots (3 from draft, 3 from FA or a trade) and the remainder is going to be more of the same crap we have seen this year

Roethlisberger’s issues in college were nothing to Cam Newton and his endless array of suspensions, transfers, and rumors and Peyton Manning sticking all of his naked parts right on a female trainers head. Not saying every young guy that does dumb stuff will grow up, but Cam and Peyton have certainly grown out of the childish stuff.

  17. bucrightoff Says:

Should we really take this column seriously any more when Manziel is literally on his way to one year and out of the league? Gonna write about how horrifically wrong you were on that one Joe?

  18. Buccfan37 Says:

If the Bucs had an offensive minded head coach he would draft Winston. Lovie, who knows?

  19. RastaMon Says:

@ Dean…which is why the Bucs need to trade DOWN TWICE in the 1st round…accumulating picks in 2015 & 2016….we’d still have a late 1st round in 2015…with multiple picks in round 2& 3….THIS YEAR

  20. BigMacAttack Says:

I wouldn’t draft a QB yet because they have absolutely no one to block for him. Lovie really screwed up this team and a QB won’t fix it yet.

  21. gatrbuc17 Says:

@Joe…………I lose more faith in you every day now.

  22. gatrbuc17 Says:

  24. gatrbuc17 Says:

Sorry…………add Big Mac to that list.

  25. Curse of Gruden Says:

Joe, I thought you would be advocating for a trade for Manziel.

  26. armchairGM Says:

He is one out of a very few that have the Bucs taking Winston. Even the site founder Walter has had us taking Mariota long before we reached the # 1 spot and has not moved from that position pretty much since week 3. Thing is even in Charlies write up for Jameis he also states how many scouts believe that Winstons off the field issues are as real as advertised. Do you guys really think Saint Lovie as you call him will draft a guy that the media will constantly bring up the negative aspects of his career? I don’t see it happening once Lovie and Licht start doing their behind the scenes work.

  27. gatrbuc17 Says:

    LOL Curse of Gruden.
I wish I had thought of that.

  28. armchairGM Says:

Charlie also had us drafting Manziel during most of the mockdraft season. This was part of his write up: The Tampa Bay owners want Johnny Manziel. Reports on our NFL Draft Rumors page say that there is definite interest between Manziel and the Buccaneers.

  29. gatrbuc17 Says:

I have MANY FSU alum for friends, every one of them to the man says they are tentative at BEST as to having Winston on the Bucs. They are the ones that have told me that Winston’s Family has had to move on several occasions due to ” Problems with people attacking Jameis”
I have no links to this but I highly doubt that my FSU friends are lying to me

  30. gatrbuc17 Says:

Why is That comment not “awaiting Moderation” Joes?????

  31. gatrbuc17 Says:

LOL armchair. I appreciate that nugget.

  32. Newbucsfan!!! Says:

Winston provides that swagg people tha us against the world mentality that will drive the Bucs team. Everyone will have the back of each player and play harder and faster. The Bucs are not a dome team that needs a mariota like a chip kelly and any other offense first/dome team. The Bucs flavor comes from defense first and Winston is the perfect fit for this team.

  33. Mr. Patrick Says:

    Free Crab Legs For Everybody!!!

  34. Mr. Patrick Says:

I just really don’t think that Lovie will draft either one of these guys. Just my gut feeling

  35. Pickgrin Says:

There has not been a QB as good as Winston (or Mariota) come out in the last 2 years. I’m so glad we didn’t take Manziel or Bridgewater last year like Joe wanted. Neither will be anything more than a lower tier QB most likely. Both Winston and Mariota have potential to be top 10 QBs in the NFL IMO. Those saying we should wait to get a QB because we have other needs like OL (Duh) or because neither of these guys is good enough is not thinking right at all.

We will have a #1 or #2 pick overall. That hasn’t happened since 1987. There will most likely be 2 good QBs available – and they will likely go 1-2. If not now – then when???? It makes no sense to say we shouldn’t draft one of these QBs. This is a rare opportunity and both QBs are worthy. Winston is damn near a lock to be a good NFL QB IMO. Yes – you can point to the supposed “character” concerns and worry that he will not get his head straight – but honestly – screw that. Be bold. Draft the best player. Winston is the best player coming out and will instantly be way better on the field than either QB on the Bucs roster now.

If we draft Winston and then are able to get his LT/Center Cam Irving in the 2nd round – we will be a long ways towards being better on offense next year.

  36. gatrbuc17 Says:

    @NewBucsFan
I can not for the life of me support a QB that threw 4 ints against my Gators at our LOWEST point in the last 34 years of football. It is hot hatred or homerism. FSU should have SHREDDED us. We have no Offense. Therefore Jameis is still undefeated and so Talked about even though he did nothing special to get FSU a win that game.
That is ok though………He is Undefeated afterall. So is the Punter, the Kicker, The OLmen, the DLmen………….etc etc.
Give Jameis all the credit tho

  37. gatrbuc17 Says:

    “not” not “hot”

  38. gatrbuc17 Says:

I was T-TOTALLY anti JF last yr.
I am not as anti JW as I was JF but you guys are pushing me.

  39. dmatt Says:

    1st round- Winston,2nd- FSU tackle/guard/center Irwin,3rd- University of Washington DE/LB Hau’Oli Kikaha (he’s a monster consistently getting to the QB)4th- Best available tackle, 4th- DE, 5th- Wr, 6th LB,7th- OL.
Winston alone will fill Raymond James Stadium with Bucs, FSU, Gators, n haters fans.

  40. Newbucsfan!!! Says:

During every national Bucs game that awful “no more” commercial will play like a 1000x’s. After the Bucs win everybody who hates Winston will also hate the Bucs team and scream “no more”. This will bring the Bucs more nationally televised games because the NFL will want to capitalize on the attention. Every team will want to beat the Bucs to be that team that brings “justice” to the world. And if the Bucs are playing for the division or a wild card next season can you imagine the attention from every media outlet.

IT WILL BE GREAT!!!! I guarantee that L. David will go to the probowl then and Lovie and this Bucs team can go tell all haters to shove it.

  41. Bucnut2 Says:

Winstonmay have potential IF he’s on the field. all of his supporters including joes are assuming the same on the field time as mariota. Winston’s off field antics make him a big risk. Guys listen up! You can’t compare the two head to head. In today’s post Ray rice nfl, the risk is very high. If Winston gets accused, forget wether he is guilty, goodell will suspend. If the Big Ben case happened now, he wouldn’t be playing. For that reason alone, this is a bs debate. Too much risk with Winston. Come on guys, wake up!

  42. Bucnut2 Says:

    Whether

  43. Bucnut2 Says:

New bucs fan, sorry you’re nuts!

  44. Bucnut2 Says:

Gatr, nice post. Another reason to pass on Winston.

  45. Matt Says:

Boys, let’s watch this USC Nebraska game and check out Williams and Gregory. I think Williams is Richard Seymour 2.0 with more speed and Gregory has been compared to Aldon Smith. I dont think Gregory is all that good with his hand in the dirt, so I’ll be eyeing that closely. Williams has great agility to break down and stop quicker backs and QBs when he gets penetration and he’s fiery.

Watching Hackenburg now, he has a long way to go. He has a big arm and some decent athleticism but isa bit wild on easy throws. Franklin will clean some of that up but he is far from a 1st rounder in 2016.

  46. mando playr Says:

Which back up will play when Winston is suspended? Can you say Josh Gordon.

  47. gatrbuc17 Says:

    Thanks Bucnut2
We will have to grit our teeth and bear it if he is drafted by us.
I hope that day does not come

  48. AJ Says:

Love to see you guys come out with a write up. Telling us all how wrong and disappointed you are with Manziel. Glad the Bucs made the right choice and went with Evans. Look at the loser Manziel is becoming for Cleveland.

Though I don’t correlate Winston with Manziel. Winston is head and shoulders above him with talent and pro ability. Your track record on QB’s isn’t sterling. So please lay off and let the experts do their job.

  49. Rrsrq Says:

If one more post says that if the Bucs miss on Winston could set the team back for years, haven’t we been back for years. I would rather draft Winston and chance at getting “back” to the playoffs

  50. BigMacAttack Says:

I wouldn’t write off Johnny Football just yet and I’d rather have him than either JW or MM. But again, the Bucs haven’t had a pocket to pass from since 2010′.

  51. Pickgrin Says:

Manziel aint half the QB that either Winston or Mariota are Big Mac. have you seen any of the above actually play in more than highlights? I’m guessing no. Manziel was a reach at 22 and if Cleveland hadn’t drafted him then – he would have dropped into the 2nd round most likely. Without Mike Evans – Manziel would have never even been talked about as “one of the top QB”.

Mariota and Winston will be drafted 1-2 most likely. There is a reason for that….

  52. Rrsrq Says:

I believe Charlie Campbell is just repeating what the experts are saying about JW, go titans

  53. Mark G Says:

Hey Joe, remember your flavor of the year last year? How many posts did you throw his way? Johnny-waist-of-time-Football. . . The savior of. . . nothing! Now it’s all crab-legs-winston. Why are you so devoted to the lowest common denominator?

  54. BigMacAttack Says:

The Browns want a QB. I’d trade them pick#1 for Manziel, their 1,2 & 4 picks.

  55. 87ForJameisOrMariota Says:

With the first overall pikc in the the 2015 draft the Tampa Bay BuCcaneers select Jameis Winston…QB out of Florida State.

….and the ticket office switchboards at One Buc light up like a Christmas tree.

  56. 87ForJameisOrMariota Says:

^^^Jim Beam Devil’s Cut for Christmas.

Sorry for the typos. Ha ha ha. Happy New Year!

  57. Dewey Selmon Says:

Winston is the best qb to come out since Luck. he can chuck th ball anywhere and stands tall in the pocket. And yes he is going to throw int’s in the NFL also. everyone does. Teammates will rally around him and #55 and lovie will babysit. i am willing to give up the next 3 years to see if Winston pans out. Aleast now a days the first contract doesn’t kill a team anymore.

  58. Alan Bucs Says:

What kills me is that people say Lovie screwed this team up. We were 4-12 last year! This team was already screwed up! Its going to take time for any coach to fix this. Firing coaches every three years is going to keep setting us back! I am tired of that crap. Let Lovie and Frazier run the already improved defense and get a competent offensive coordinator and we will be fine. Stop the Fire Lovie crap please!

  59. Newbucsfan!!! Says:

I would like to see all black coaches succede but the Bucs have got to fire Warhop the o-line coach and arroyo the oc. Come into next season w/ A.Peterson & Blount along with Sims as your runningbacks and maulers on the o-line. See if Herron developes and becomes the Bucs version of Cooks(N.O.) or Brown(A.C.).

New punter and a returner then draft Winston, G, DE, G, MLB, FS, CB, DE.
Then in FA get a: CB, FS, DE(not expensive), and a LB. Pick up a few undrafted FA and see who sticks as depth and contributors right away. Trade glennon, martin, and gholdson(S), for players or more draft picks and hope you find some late round gems.

  60. CC Says:

Fire Lovie. This team hasn’t. Even this bad in over 20 years.

  61. Skyline Crew for Mariota or Winston Says:

If you draft Mariota on draft day the Bucs will have a season high ticket sales. Considering a majority of Bucs fans want Mariota and Nole fans want Winston. Do you go with what Noles fans want? Or do you go with what Bucs fans want?

  62. CC Says:

    Been this bad^

  63. Skyline Crew for Mariota or Winston Says:

Any new QB gets a year to two years and that is it. We set that precedent. Why would Winston change that? Glennon has 18 games and you guys have already written him off without him even getting a fair shot.

  64. CC Says:

Im a Bucs fan and give me Winston.

  65. nate Says:

I perfer winston ill settle with mariota.

  66. Alan Bucs Says:

The saints haven’t been this bad in a long time either but they will not fire Sean Payton because they allowed him time to succeed. We Don’t give anyone time to rebuild this team and we give up on them in one year. This is why we as Bucs fans don’t see winning very often.

  67. chipbuc Says:

For all you geniuses that want to trade down and not pick a QB

  68. port richey george Says:

I have always liked jameis Winston over mariotta. but, I don’t think any QB including payton manning or tom brady could survive an entire season without a running game or pass protection from the bucs 0-line.

  69. chipbuc Says:

Sorry i messed up. Anyway this is probably our best time to draft a big time QB . The logic of not taking a QB because we have so many other needs is very short sighted. Take a look at all the dominate teams of the past 10 years, what do they have in common ( Brady, Manning ,Brees , Roethlisbuger Rogers , see the pattern ? So lets grow a pair and take a chance on a QB with the number 1 pick!!!!!

  70. Jacko101 Says:

I see lovie going Williams and pairing him with McCoy

  71. JTHV Says:

    Joe,

U know I love you like I love a well prepared steak at Flemings served by our friend Diaz.

But 90% of the clowns who post on your site has never invested hard earned money into this team. If they come back with an argument that they used to could and did, haven’t since Alstott, not since Galloway, won’t since Malcom died, I hate every single one of you clowns.

I’ll renew my tickets for technically the 30th year in a row.

I own 2 sets of tickets at Ray Jay, Sec 312, Row C Seats 17,18 and Sec 219 Row L Seats 22-25.

I can’t believe you give thethese clowns a forum to spew their stupidity.

They aren’t invested into this team. They think watching their garbage ass $800 LED TV next to a free pisser along with a $15 18-packs of Bud Light is the same as supporting the team.

And these clowns are the loudest fools encroaching upon us real fans nuts. Lay off my almonds, b!tches.

  72. P'cola Buc Says:

We need both offensive line help as well as a quarterback. You never give up a chance of drafting a possible franchise quarterback when you have it. It’s so rare. Take Mariota/Winston now when you have the chance. You’ll still get a quality offensive lineman later. Don’t wait to hope for next year to draft a QB, a quality one probably will not be there when it is your chance to pick. Taking a QB now in later rounds will significantly limit the chance he will be successful. As for which of the two to take…. Let’s see them on the field of the Rose Bowl and solidify the choice.

  73. Joe Says:

Joe, I thought you would be advocating for a trade for Manziel.

Barring the Bucs screwing the pooch in the draft, not a bad idea.

  74. Luther Says:

I don’t want Manziel and I certainly don’t want the Bucs to trade down. Take Winston or Mariota. Any other move and I won’t go to another game.

  75. MadMax Says:

After watching Leonard Williams last night, then watching some of his highlights….I will admit I wont be disappointed if we went with him first. He could fix our pass rush alone with GMC….and dont forget the injuries GMC has suffered of late. Williams could fill in fine if GMC were to go down again next year, but our D line would be beasting with him AND McCoy….holy cow!

As much as I want a QB and O line, this guy is a cant miss. I called Clowney a bust last year way before he was drafted, and proved to be right. This guy isnt a bust. He’s the real deal!

I F and BIG I F we went Williams 1st, we could probably still land quality O line and Hundley or Petty later.

  76. Buc-O's 82 Says:

Hell, even sleepy Freeman or anybody matter of fact, can look good playing UNRANKED TEAMS.

  77. LargoBuc Says:

No one can change Winston. Not Lovie. Not Brooks. He has to want to change. He has to want to dedicate his life and time and energy to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers…

  78. Bucfan4life Says:

Rrsq I agree completely. I also am tired of all the “set the franchise back” comments. They are the worst team in football with a historically bad offense. What is the harm in swinging for the fences. Ultimately it may not work out but we haven’t won a playoff game In 12 years. With a scrub at QB that will not change. Everyone knows that Jameis is the best QB in the draft and has HOF potential. We need to take a shot. If he doesn’t work out what is the downside? We might be irrelevant? I think we’re already there?

  79. getaclue Says:

hey joe , what do you think about bringing in jeff garcia as a qb coach. he has been coaching and reaching out to a lot of different players. i would like to see him back in the organization helping our next young qb. i think he would definitely be interested in the job also

  80. Skyline Crew for Mariota or Winston Says:

    Mariota or bust.
