“Buyer’s Market”

February 13th, 2015

Brandon Marshall?

The report of the Bucs preparing a pay cut proposal for Vincent Jackson may be a pile of poop, but that doesn’t mean Tampa Bay won’t be sniffing an impressive crop of wide receivers.

The free agency dinner bell rings in 25 days, and an NFL.com report today dives into how a “buyer’s market” is developing for receivers. All kinds of big names are being talked about, including a potential trade of Vincent Jackson, who will count $12.2 million against the Bucs’ salary cap this year.

Joe was intrigued by the chatter of Brandon Marshall possibly getting cut by the Bears.

He’s due $7.5 million, if he’s with Chicago on March 12. The Bears have a new head coach and don’t have the salary cap flexibility enjoyed by Tampa Bay.

Marshall, 30, who went to high school in Winter Park and played for the University of Central Florida, has a history with Lovie Smith in Chicago. And Joe suspects Marshall wouldn’t mind playing alongside a beastly receiver like Mike Evans, as Marshall seeks to build on his Hall of Fame numbers.

Joe wouldn’t cry if the Bucs managed to land Marshall while trading V-Jax for a decent draft pick, and saving a pile of salary cap cash.

New England just won a Super Bowl with a receiver corps that Lovie would cut…..

Of course, the P-men have Tom Brady who can make just about any receiver look good.

    Simple as that……

  2. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Brandon Marshall & Denarius Moore–sounds like a good haul to me.

  3. Scott Says:

If we Traded V-Jax Id consider moving Murphy from the slot to the outside and then bringing Eddie Royal in. That would free up much more money

  4. JoeJoes Fungi Nails Says:

    Don’t get to clever L&L….if it ain’t broke don’t fix it !
V Jax is invaluable as an example and locker room leadership

  5. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

Can we get the OLINE straightened out first….;)

  6. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Remember these Headlines (2014)
    • Mike Evans compares his game to Brandon Marshall’s
    • Mike Evans, Brandon Marshall working out together before the draft

Both men are training with Fit Speed Athletic Performance in Florida and the company has shared a slew of photos and videos of the two wideouts working out with several other athletes at their facility– https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6pVK4UCkBnI

  7. WS99 Says:

    Smh

no wonder we are a 2-14 team.

  8. Pickgrin Says:

If its a “buyers market” and with a bunch of WR talent coming out yet again in the draft – why would anyone make a trade offer for VJax whose contract is just under $10M per for the next 2 years. It’s one thing to overpay a good receiver when you need one. It’s another thing altogether to overpay a WR – AND give up a 2nd or 3rd round draft pick for the “privilege” of overpaying that receiver. Especially when he is pushing 33 years old.

  9. buc4lyfe Says:

that’s just great cut one old guy and sign another old guy for about the same money. the draft is full of receivers it’s time to stop signing free agents at the money positions and hit it in the draft. receiver cant be a priority this offseason not with all the other issues, even if we trade vjack we still wont be as weak at receiver as we are other positions

  10. ddneast Says:

Brandon is the same type of receiver as VJax with more emotional baggage. Catch the NFL special about him, it is very interesting how he came to understand the reasons for the way he acted and what he has done to try and change and modify his behavior. Gave a million dollars to the Mental Health Alliance when he signed his last deal. Special person.

  11. BucFan20 Says:

New England just won Super Bowl with a Coach that Lovie IS NOT and NEVER WILL BE.

  12. DallasBuc Says:

Vincent Jackson is a better team player and mentor for the youngin’ instead of Marshall. Shop for a third receiver and draft a stud to go with Evans down the road.

  13. BuCncRaZy Says:

No way I would want Marshall anywhere near Evans or Winston… Keep Vjax

  14. Destinjohnny Says:

    O line end of story

  15. The Rockstar Says:

It is always bittersweet to watch ex-bucs win Super Bowls. Revis, Casillas, Blunt, Wright got rings this year. I am totally happy for them and even rooted for the Pats because of the these player. I remember when V-Jax signed with Tampa it was all about #5, $55,555,555 contract and all. Now #5 is long gone and so is the hope for Jackson to win it here. Wherever he goes I hope it is a place where it’s about a ring and not a single unproven quarterback like this team is about to do again.

  16. BucIt941 Says:

If they are shopping for anyone. They should be going after Jeremy Maclin. Mr. Do it all, still young, and can take it to the house on any given play seems like a better compliment to Evans jump ball skill set.

  17. Mumbles Says:

Leave V-Jax alone. Get Phillip Dorsett in the draft and shut the door.

  18. ddneast Says:

BucFan20, Belicheat has Brady, something Lovie and every other coach Don’t have. You are an idiot.

  19. BirdDoggers Says:

The only way it makes sense to get rid of VJax is if they’re prepared to go after one of the top free gent WRs. They need to surround a rookie QB with plenty of weapons. Marshall would be a good fit. He’s a big receiver like VJax and he’d be playing alongside Evans, who is built much like Jeffery.

On the topic of buyers market. The opposite could be said about the free agent QB situation. It’s a sellers market if you have a quality back up you’re willing to trade or, ahem, the #1 pick. The crop of free agents is lackluster to say the least. The Bucs would be in a good position to maximize the trade value of Glennon with plenty of QB needy teams out there. It could be a huge mistake to get rid of him without a quality back up of their own, but it’s not a bad position to be in. The same could be said for the value of the #1 pick. A QB needy team could pay a ransom to trade up. Otherwise your options are Sanchez, Vick, McCoy, Hoyer, etc.

  20. mark2001 Says:

Randall Cobb would be a great fit…not bit like Jackson or Marshall, but a real play maker.

  21. BucFan20 Says:

ddneast, you are the idiot. You come here eveyday and call people names like we care. Your as old as I am and act like a kid. F..off.

  22. Bill Says:

Marshall and VJax are about the same in my mind. If we could save cap room with a switch you’d have to consider it, but I don’t see that happening.

  23. bucncali Says:

I’m a MG fan, but if you take Winston and don’t have an offensive leader like Jackson it’s only asking for trouble and he will fail

  24. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Brandon Marshall has borderline personality disorder that makes him a bad teammate. If we draft Winston, then he is the WORSE WR to have on the team. He would want the ball on every play and if he didn’t get it he would throw the ball at Winston…as he did with Cutler.

  25. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Reworking Jackson’s contract is a good idea. Shift some of that money to a bonus and it will reduce the cap hit.

Still several players to cut and clear cap room as well.

  26. Pickgrin Says:

I would much rather have VJax than Marshall this year – even if he does cost more. Continuity is important – especially regarding the Bucs budding star receiver with almost the exact same size and skillset – who has already said Jackson’s presence has really been a huge help to him.

We can easily afford Jackson’s salary for the production and leadership he is providing. Don’t even think about messing with the 1 thing that was working on offense last year….

    —————————————————————
Oooooor – wouldn’t it be ironic if Jackson did “win it” (all) here in the last year of his contract (2016) BECAUSE of #5!!!!

Not the old fake one – the real #5 that the Bucs are drafting in 76 days.

  27. StatsR4Losers Says:

Trade MG for a 3rd round pick. Trade the 2nd and a 5th round pick to move back up in the 1st round and select Wr: Dorial Green-Beckham
    Ht:6’6
    Wt:225 lbs
    40:4.43 secs
    Bench Max:295
    Squat Max:385

With the 3rd pick select the best lineman available.

  28. pancake block Says:

meh on Green…..compared to Braylon Edwards??..pass…
unless we sign lupati and baluga…o line,o line and more o line.
I cant stand thinking about Oniel “ole” cousins even suited up

  29. OB Says:

We need VJax for his leadership and ability to help that other receivers not to mention that he has over 1000 yards with a QB that had no accuracy. We have an OC now that can devise plays and schemes based on our players, we would be crazy to dump VJax.

If you want money, dump most of the OL, its coaches and Lovie.

  30. Barry Says:

VJax is a class act. If you can keep him.

  31. Buc-O's 82 Says:

You can’t build a team via FA, hence 2014 Bucs season

  32. QBKilla99 Says:

If VJax is dealt, the deal better be sweet. His leadership will be needed if it’s a QB in round 1.

  33. Not ...... "The Kevin" Says:

AGAIN….Even if you bring in a receiver who is slightly better than Vjax which would be pretty hard to do, he probably would have less production his first season. This team has lacked continuity. We need players who all know each other. Not a bunch of “YOUNGRY” new players figuring things out together. Glennon Evans and Vjax with a healthy ASJ and an upgrade at the slot would be nice to see for 2015. I’d bet the Bucs would take the south if they went with that combo. Upgrade the slot but first upgrade the o-line.

We HAVE to draft a QB with that number one pick..but after that O-line and D-line need to be addressed. Than hit Free Agency.

  34. Mike10 Says:

Lol sure getting Marshall and trading Jax for a good pick (reasonably a 4th at best) sounds like a good idea. But is there a reason we’d look to shake up arguably the only stable unit on the team – the receivers? How about we just build some commrodery (sp?) and focus on pretty much everything else.

  35. Sam Says:

Without Tom Brady Belichick is 51-65. With him the winning record is just plain crazy good. Both deserve credit.

  36. Brandon Says:

Haha, some of the posters want Philip Dorset or Dorial Green-Beckham…..Dorset is tiny but can fly but hasn’t even really excelled at the college level… Green-Beckham…wow, talk about character problems!

If you want a pocket-sized WR, the two clear best are Jamison Crowder of Duke and Tyler Lockett of K State… as for bigger WRs…any of them (Devin Funchess for example) would be better as Green-Beckham was kicked off of TWO (2) college teams and didn’t even play this past season.

The irony! Stats are for losers? Yet all you list for Green-Beckham is his stats…how about this statistic. TWO as in two teams in the past two years that he has been kicked off of. 2 2 2 2 2 2 2 2 2 Dude’s only got two years of actual playing of football and he only produced in his 2nd… 2 2 2 2 2 2… and to tell the truth this guy is a number 2. This guy is Tanard Jackson… the 2nd.

  39. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Survey says correct ndog, funny things I wonder what the titans website looks like these days. Im sure that organization is sitting back wishing like hell the Buccs organization will somehow make themselves look like the dumbest franchise in the history of sport by passing on this what many of you want to make out to be a head case. Im sure they are chumping at the bit to snatch WINSton if the Buccs are incompetent enough to pass on him. If you think other wise you fooling yourself. On the field off the field issues,I havent heard not one so called expert predict that he will fall far if the Buccs prove to be imbecile and dont take him at number one. I wonder why. Could it be 26 and 1 speaks volumes within its self.

  40. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Says:

I will be surprised if Tampa does not ask Jackson to take a pay cut.
The smart thing to do is to trade him, if we can get a decent pick for him.
Brandon Marshall has Borderline Personality Disorder, and that is nearly impossible to treat, and get any results.
It is ten times worse, and harder to treat, then Bipolar Disorder.

I think we lack speed at the wide receiver position, and I would like to see a real burner on our team. I watched plenty of games where McCown was focused in on Jackson, and he is so slow, and takes so long to get open, it made our bad line look even worse

  41. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Okay I understand expressing ones concern about a particular players play on the field, all this diagnosis bs seems somewhat strange to me. When was the last time anyone ever heard about Marshall being a problen the Chicago community or in that teams locker room? I’ll be waiting, from all acounts the guy is loved in that city and everytime the cameras are in that locker room he seem to be spokesmen of that team. Oh,I forgot if you show emotion or passion for the game i.e WINSton, according to ghandi, saint ass Buccs fans you make for a bad guy. No wonder weve suck for so long.

  43. BoJim Says:

Pay Jackson. We still need him for a year or two. He’s probably getting a 1.000 yds this year anyway.

  44. Rob Says:

    Must sign Randall Cobb

  45. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

Lose VJax, save money, and add Marshall. That all seems way too good to be true. I like Jax but he isn’t worth a 12 million cap hit next season. The free agent class is full of all pro talent and tons of depth players. We can really improve our team and most of our holes with the FA Market. Then use the draft to get the best available player with our picks and not be forced into drafting for need over talent.

I can’t wait to see what kind of numbers Williams puts up at the combine. Mainly his agility drills and his bench press. I am expecting great numbers on all fronts. Especially for a 300 lb manbeast!!
