Barring Robbery, Glennon Shopped

“The Pope,” Mike Francesa, claims short of Jameis Winston holding up a store, the Bucs will be forced to move Mike Glennon.

How much did the Bucs releasing turnover-prone quarterback Josh McCown blow up NFL news cycles?

In an unprecedented move, the subject was a focus with “The Pope” of sports radio, Mike Francesa of WFAN-AM 660 in New York.

Francesa, manning his wildly popular show, also simulcast weekdays on Fox Sports 1, took a chunk out of his busy time otherwise discussing Tom Coughlin, the hapless Jets and Alex Rodriguez, and authoritatively stated the Bucs already have decided who their next quarterback is in the wake of McCown’s release.

And it isn’t Mike Glennon.

Francesa declared, short of Jameis Winston sticking up a convenience store, he will start for the Pewter Pirates Sept. 14 to kick off the 2015 season, and that the Bucs will shop Glennon.

See Francesa’s full take below.

  2. Mr. Patrick Says:

No matter who your starting QB is, you have to have a quality back-up, because that back-up is 1 bad play away from being your starter

Unless he does something “really stupid”……..again

Francesa…is full of sheet….just another opinion….no different than anyone posting on this board

  4. StPeteBucsFan Says:

And we know how accurate the NYC sports media can be. They simply throw sht up against the wall and then wait to see if any of it sticks.

  5. carlstoe Says:

Winston wasn’t caught in 7 Eleven! He was caught in Burger King and Publix! His press conference next week will be interesting!

  6. Pat Says:

Frances is just trying to rile up the NYJ fans now. There’s a lot of chatter of having MG8 going to the jets. Smoke screen.

  7. Pickgrin Says:

I agree we are taking Winston. But I disagree that we should be shopping Glennon. “shopping” him means you probably get a 4th round pick in trade. Biding your time until someone desperate for a QB comes to you means you could get a 2nd rounder for Glennon in a trade.

Glennon’s salary for the next 2 years is a steal for a capable back up QB. If Koetter likes him which has been reported – then it makes the most sense to keep Glennon – draft Winston and then not even have to think about the QB position for the next 2 years unless someone comes crawling to you offering a 2nd round pick for Glennon at some point in between.

  8. AK Says:

Hey at least he didn’t fall asleep!

  9. Tampabaybucfan Says:

It is a very sad commentary…..even in jest….to link Winston to “robbing a 7-11….

This is the sort of thing that he (unfortunately) has brought on himself by his bad behavior….and yes….sure it’s immaturity…but it is still bad behavior. Winston has noone to blame but himself.
Now….the Bucs may not care….but I think they do!!!

  10. DallasBuc Says:

Never having to see that colossal loser McCown suit up behind center for my Bucs automatically means we have a chance to win football games. Any decision from here on out is gravy.

  11. Bucsfan47 Says:

I’d much rather the EAGLES trade the farm to trade up with us, then try to get Bradford and Mallet. Then try to get a lower rated QB in the 2nd or 3rd.

  12. JFat Says:

Were there actually people that thought McCown would still be here next season?

Anyone who was shocked McCown got the axe or thinks it has anything to do with who we draft this year should have their head examined.

We could take either QB or none at all but McCown has nothing to do with that decision.

  13. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

Of course, if he said it was Mariota, we all know some of these comments would be reversed.

I agree none of it matters. Not the people posting here, not the analysts, not Kiper. But, you have to admit, even if wrong, the consensus is becoming Winston.

I just hope the front office agrees.

  14. BirdDoggers Says:

Not buying it. There would be absolutely nobody of any decent quality backing up Winston in this scenario. The free agent crop of QBs is bad, really bad. Do you think Lovie, with his job on the line, would put all his chips on the table with Winston? What if he gets hurt? Then what? With McCown gone, they have no choice but to have a quality, veteran backup. If they don’t, Lovie should borrow Ron Rivera’s moniker and become Riverboat Lovie.

  15. warrenfb12 Says:

I think we start Glennon and sit Winston, or have a competition in training camp.

  16. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

What veteran backups are out there? And, I mean, not looking to be a starter only. But, former starters, now willing to clipboard it.

  17. Joe Says:

Never having to see that colossal loser McCown suit up behind center for my Bucs automatically means we have a chance to win football games.

Although there is a lot of debate about whether Glennkn could be a good starter in the NFL, most people agree he would probably be a more than capable backup.
With that said, what is the major problem with him being in that slot here.
He also provides Lovie a great escape hatch to be here a third year.
No one expects a rookie, unless it’s Andrew Luck, to lead his team to a winning season.
So He starts Glennon for eight games and if he isn’t winning, he replaces him with the rookie.
Either way he is covered since he didn’t draft Glennon in the first place. Face it all you Lovie haters, Coach Smith is probably here for a third season. LOL.

  29. Erik with CleanAthletics.com Says:

Everyone needs to STFU about Winston being a smart pick at #1. Why take the risk?? Who gambles with their job like that? Mariota might need to prove himself in a couple areas on the field still (so does Jameis), but he is a way more secure investment as a person. And he seems to have the mental acuity and drive to be a complete QB.

Shouldn’t you be out shopping for 87’s jersey? Until Joe says otherwise, everyone’s opinion is welcome, even your incorrect one.

  31. Erik with CleanAthletics.com Says:

At least I’ll be getting a Mariota jersey from 87 after the draft. Omg Winston is so over-hyped and overrated.

  32. SSG Mike Says:

If you think the Bucs do not have a small group of Free Agent veterans already on “Speed Dial” just waiting for the FA flood gates to start moving then I have some “Excellent Water Front Property” to sell you in the “Everglades”. They already have their own short list to include contingencies plans if someone is not available. I know everyone thinks Lovie and Licht are idiots along with the “3 Stooges” but this is what they do and while they do not always make the right decisions they do think it out a bit and move on it when it’s time. I would speculate that they already know which QB they will draft or even if they will draft one with the 1st pick as well as they know who the top three Veteran QB’s they will pursue, I think they may have someone signed by the start of Free Agency in mid March. They might be the first to sign a free agent from outside of their organization. Go Bucs!

  33. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

Everyone has an opinion. It just so happens that most people paid for theirs, is different than yours.

Too bad 87 won’t be able to post a pic of his jersey bought by Erik.

  34. Supersam Says:

Zzzzzzzzz another day another boring Winston article, I wonder how JOE is gonna pass the time come May when he has to think of something positive to write about our new franchise quarterback Marcus Mariota. This guy is like all the rest, a sheet in the wind just blowing around. No one knows who we will draft especially not this clown. And once the Glazers get wind of the movie The Hunting Ground coming out soon, there no way they’ll touch Winston, what a public relations nightmare this kid will be.

  35. CreamsicleBananaHammock Says:

Erik, I think part of the deal should be that you have to buy yourself a Winston jersey as well. Likewise, 87 would have to buy himself a Marriota jersey

LOL Love and Warrick – EXACTLY my thought when I read that but you beat me to it.

  37. The Rockstar Says:

Whether or not any quarterback is drafted there is absolutely no reason to move Mike Glennon. There is no contract issue. There is no upside of letting him go. You still have to find a back up and most likely it would be a veteran who would require a higher salary. Gaining even a second round pick just adds an inexperienced, unproven player. Like him or not Glennon is proven. Trading him opens gaps, doesn’t fill them.

  38. biff barker Says:

Still, all we know is McCown is gone, the Cannon is on the roster today, and the Bucs pick first overall.

Smoke, mirrors, media scribes peck away while the talking heads babble.

I honestly know nothing more about what the Bucs are thinking. For all of those who think otherwise, grab a flight to Colorado and have a Tommy Chong weekend with your pal Jim Beam.

  39. Supersam Says:

@loveandwarrickdunn That’s just it, if it was a Marcus Mariota article it would have never got posted, there’s a ton of of not more positive Mariota articles out there and “draft experts” that say Mariota is our guy. You just won’t read about it on this website. Id like to read the story about Jameis being called the next Jay Cutler because he throws to many interceptions, but you won’t find that article on this website lol. JOEJAMEIESFAN.COM has a nice ring to it.

I would say it’s more Winston right now, and continues to go toward him.

    http://dcprosportsreport.com/MockDraft.htm

Kiper already dropped Mariota to 6.

“Id like to read the story about Jameis being called the next Jay Cutler because he throws to many interceptions”

Are you talking about Mayock? He did say that about Winston. He also still ranked Winston over Mariota in the same article. So, if he thinks Winston is still better than Mariota while comparing him to Cutler, than what do you think he thinks of Mariota?

I couldn’t stand Joe’s opinion of Johnny or his desire to sign F_reeman to a team friendly contract. But, it’s their site. Love it or leave it.

  41. Yungry Says:

Winston has on the field issues… 18 interceptions and didn’t play in every game(suspended). But, playing against low level ACC competition and behind an offensive line which 3 of the 5 will go pro in the draft and be all day 1 or 2 picks is very disturbing. He had an excellent freshman year but has regressed in every area of his game, not a good trend in such a small sample size like 2 years.

  42. buddhaboy Says:

Why would we get rid of both experienced back up? Dont understand that. If they want to shop glennon, then shouldve kept mccown to backup/mentor

  43. Jeagan1999 Says:

Francesa gets his opinion from the same place we all get ours….pulled right out of our a55es. Anyone who says they “know” what the BUCS will do with the #1 pick is about as credible as an IRS official testifying that all of Lois Lerners emails have disappeared into oblivion! Anything can…and often does…happen in the weeks before the draft. More stories about Winstons unusual behavior on campus could emerge. He could tear a hammy or rupture an ACL at the combine. He could score a 2 on his Wonderlick…. So let’s wait and see what happens, because as we all know “the best laid plans of mice and men oft go astray!”

  44. CreamsicleBananaHammock Says:

Yea, Mayock said Jameis reminded him of Cutler coming out of college. He also said:

I have Jameis Winston number one. The reason is in his offense, I can see everything you want out of a quarterback.

  45. bucs4lyfe Says:

it’s not much of a stretch at this point to say glennon is not the guy

  46. Lovethepewter Says:

haha gotta love Mayock saying “he reminds me a little of jay cutler with the high interceptions” and people saying that now there is an article about how he’s jay cutler. how about the article joe posted about how almost every top qb coming out had the most interceptions in their college career their final season before coming out. idiots.

  47. LJ'sDaddy Says:

Jfat…did you not watch our football team play last year? Do you know anything aboutLovie? I think anyone in their right mind could conclude that there was a very good chance that McCown would start in 2015. I lost sleep nearly every night thinking that he would. I’m just thankful he’s gone…. kumbaya.

  48. ADown88 Says:

Pat Yasinskas sure seems to think the pick is Winston. Stating that Lovie prefers Winston and that they hired Koetter over Trestman because Koetter prefered Winston and Trestman preferred Mariota. This could be a bunch of bull crap, but I’m sure the NFC South specialist for the biggest sports media company in the world knows more that any of us on here. At least he has more connections.

Also, Mayock said Winston is the #1 QB in this class. McShay even said that Winston is the 2nd best QB prospect in the past 10 years.

  49. Stanglassman Says:

Jeagan, would you care to put a wager on who scores higher on the wonderlic? I’ll take Jameis. I think if anything M.M.’s score will raise some eyebrows and drop his stock.

  50. BucFan20 Says:

Just another opinion and nothing more. Everyone that has a radio show or tv show has one but NO hard fact to back it up. Wait. I have a friend that has a friend that has a friend that has a source at OBP. Just thought I would BS to.

  51. pick6 Says:

the goal of an NFL team is to stockpile talent, not to distribute it across the league. we don’t know whether glennon or (presumably) winston are good enough to be the guy at this point, so we ought to hold on to both until we have an answer. getting a mid round draft pick is not worth handing over the only player on your roster that you know can play QB at the NFL level

  52. BucIt941 Says:

I am really confused. I see a lot of people claim how good Glennon is and should be a starter in the league etc etc. Yet when his name is thrown around for trade value everyone keeps saying we wont get anything better than a 4th or 5th rounder. I am sorry but a disagree. For starters he is better than most of the FA available this year, He is also better than most of the QB’s in this draft class (outside MM and Winston). So why could we NOT get at the very least a 3rd rounder(his original draft position) or even better because he has proven his skills on in the NFL. I am sure there are at least 3 teams out there wanting Glennon. Saints, Jets, Rams, and Browns come to mind immediately.

Bottom line I just feel he is easily 3rd rounder if not possibly low second round trade material.

  53. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

I keep hearing about how people had Mariota as #1 previously? I didn’t see very many.

And I also take this with a grain of salt. More opinion, no facts. Remember the days that the media had a standard?

Why do people keep adding a disclaimer to the drafting of Winston at #1? For example, if he robs a 7-11?

If he has no character issues, why say such things and why would Brooks even need to mentor him? To say he has issues is admitting he is a bad investment risk.

  54. Joe and Johnny Football Forever Says:

What good is a low draft pick?

Who did we draft with L. Blount’s traded pick?

For all the players traded for draft picks… who of those are starting for the Bucs?

  55. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Also, I’m REALLY REALLY tired of hearing about how shocking the McCown release was. It wasn’t. Not really. But even if it was, hearing the same thing several times a day is getting old.

He’s gone. Short and simple. It just means another vet is coming in, and rightfully so. McCown was a great off field example, but not a great on field one.

  56. Connor Says:

Does Glennon have to be an elite quarterback or a pro bowler to be on the roster? What’s wrong with having a quality backup? He’s cheap too! Anyone on the free agent market will likely be a lot more and probably not much better.

This is a reasonable and quite plausible scenario, and I agree the one most likely to happen. I am not a Lovie Smith fan to date, but starting Glennon for a legit shot at the starting position, while grooming a rookie, if he fails, …… means that Lovie is a man of his word, and that he was at least fair to MG8. Wouldn’t it be ironic if Glennon played well enough to save his job.
