Josh McCown weighs in on his coordinator’s innovation
A 2002 third-round draft pick now on his sixth NFL team, Bucs starting QB Josh McCown has seen an awful lot of football in his day. But he’s never experienced some of the stuff offensive coordinator Jeff Tedford installed in Tampa Bay’s mysterious playbook.
McCown spoke to media after minicamp practice yesterday and reiterated how much he loves the “fresh perspective” of Tedford and how that’s translating to the field.
“His open-mindedness to kind of push the envelope and do different things, that’s the best part of it. Jeff, he’s got great ideas. That’s the cool thing. He’s always coming up and we’re talking about things and showing me this play, ‘What do you think about this? What do you think about that?’ And so I appreciate that from his respect, just doing it together, looking at my perspective,” McCown said.
“There’s been, you know, a lot of big plays we’ve made this spring that point straight back to things that he brought there, that’s new, that I’ve not yet done in the NFL. That’s exciting to think what can unfold throughout a season.”
Joe’s watched plenty of spring practices and also has seen many interesting looks in the passing game, especially out of the backfield and with tight ends. But surely Joe isn’t catching the nuances and creativity McCown is referencing. And it is impressive that a guy of McCown’s experience is wowed by fresh looks.
Now Joe has to shake his head at McCown referencing “big plays” during underwear football practices with no pass rush, no press coverage and overall flag football rules. There are no big plays in spring ball, only good execution.
There will be plenty of time for “big plays” when Lovie Smith goes live with skull knocking in training camp, plus when the preseason whistle blows in Jacksonville in eight weeks.

Eight weeks!!!! So close, you can taste it.
This offense seems like it be will really potent. Or if we dont have the right guys yet, could be a bust. Personally, I like McCown more and more every time I hear him talk. What a great find. If he can play half as well as he talks, we are in the beginnings of something really special. IMO, QB is more brains than brawns, and we got a couple of really great brains on our QB squad.
There may not be a better man in the league for Glennon to be around.

I’m not sure if our OC is ligit or not, but I like the fact that Lovie swung for the fences with this hire. I just don’t understand how he could of been unemployed last year and be this offensive genius, but stranger things have happened. We went from one of the Buc’s best offensesin 2012, to dead last in 2013 with Sullivan, which blows my mind.

Well lovie was in employed last year too. I’m sure both of them got calls to coach somewhere but turned them down. Can’t wait for this year though! Greatest nba team in the NFL!

The element of surprise lasts about one game in the NFL. I hope Tedford has lot’s of them in store.
Seems like Lovie’s 10-6 season that got him fired is still fresh in his mind. I’m glad he has eschewed the legendary Father Dungy stubbornness and has recognized the evolution of offensive schemes in the today’s NFL.
What does make sense though is wanting more a athletic OL rather then the mauling sort. We have a nice balance of size and speed and a veteran QB that understands what the OC is trying to do.
This might be the year that the oxymoron known as “potent Buccaneer offense” can be put to rest.

@Joseph Mamma – bad o-line, V-jack triple team, Rookie QB(which perform decent), Last but not least SCHIANO WAS IN CHARGE. 68 DEGREES BABY!
Specially last year when “The Cannon” was playing Schiano’s focus was to make Glennon look good and built confidence. Remember the 5-7 yard passes. Because when Glennon looked good it meant SCHIANO looked good ~ “The man in control.” Winning was never the main focus.
But I am static about our pass because our future looks pretty bright right now. Problem solved…

If our o-line is mediocre “The Cannon” is looking at 2 years of clipboard. “The Cannon” will probably play an occasional game or two due to injury to McCown.
And that is as REAL as it gets…lol

Yea what OB said…big plays during underwear football period can easily mean breakdown in coverage due to the concept of the play or it could mean Leonard Johnson was in coverage during those big plays

Yes because I’m sure glennon in all his 13 games of NFL experience has so much wisdom to to give tedford about his ideas. Only the guy sees the field is injury Or playoffs out of reach. MGM your embarrassing yourselves

I hope Lovie and Tedford played alot of football chess in Lovie’s basement, bouncing ideas as to what kind of plays Tedford can implement that will stress different NFL defenses. I hope that year off “game-planning” works out well!

@ Joseph Mamma, thats because you saw Schiano take over a lot of the offensive play calling duties once they pulled Freeman. Sullivan was not anything close to what I believe Tedford will be, but he was much better than the Greg Olsen calling play days. Just about every game last season they would show a shot of Schiano in the 3rd – 4th quarter wearing the headset holding the play card. Either way this new team makes it VERY VERY easy to forget about those days. And the’s new Uni’s have grown on me. Much needed change. I think the Glaziers learned from they’re past mistakes and this will be a wining team led by an offense that scores a lot of points. GO BUCS, EIGHT WEEKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
