Licht: Glennon “Has A Cannon”

May 13th, 2014

YosemiteAll the new Tampa Bay receivers better not give up on their routes a half-second early or have tender hands during spring practices and training camp. Why? Because the Bucs’ quarterback of the future has a “cannon” for an arm, even better than Josh McCown’s.

That’s how Bucs general manager Jason Licht described Mike Glennon’s prized appendage yesterday to the dean of Tampa Bay sports radio, Steve Duemig of WDAE-AM 620.

“We have had the opportunity to be around Mike [Glennon] and Josh quite a bit now, meeting rooms, not just the practice field. And, you know, when you look at the top things we look for in a quarterback, No. 1 being intelligence, No. 2 being accuracy, No. 3 being toughness, and then the fact that both of these guys have a strong arm, particularly Mike has a cannon,” Licht said.

“Those are the types of quarterbacks that you want to work with now and in the future. And we feel like he’s got real a bright future here, both of them, talking about especially Mike has a bright future down the road. So we felt like getting Mike Evans was going to make our quarterbacks better. We feel like he’s a dominant player. It’s a two-fold thing. Not only do we get a great player, but he makes our quarterbacks better.”

Joe will be carving up more of Licht’s revealing interview and will have the full audio here later.

Duemig questioned Licht on Glennon’s arm strength, and Licht replied that the Bucs have the “better intelligence” and information that Duemig and others haven’t seen or can’t see.

  1. KJ Says:

Glennon definitely has a strong arm. I watched him a lot in college and he showcased it a few times in Bucs game last season. I think the problem is, not that he doesn’t have a strong arm, but that he everything needs to be perfect around him for him to display it.

  2. FLBoyInDallas Says:

Glad to see Licht not taking any crap from the Little Chihuahua and putting him in his proper place as outside observer, versus the Bucs staff who are insiders and by definition know MUCH, MUCH more than any of the pretenders out there. Damn the media can come across as so frigging entitled and pretentious sometimes.

  3. lions Says:

So not sure if I get, saw Gil Arcia tweet that he was told B.Smith might not make it past minicamp. What does that mean they decided they don’t want him or just not good enough?

I’m looking forward to hearing the audio to hear how Duemig reacted to Licht basically saying we know more than your silly @ss. LOL

This is definitely what happened last year. The question is: Is this what Schiano required, or is it part of Mike’s Glennon’s nature?

I hope it is that Schiano required it or the Bucs need to start looking for a new QB.

  6. Vic Says:

So Glennon is the only 2nd-year QB with a cannon for an arm who has intelligence, mental toughness, acccurancy and experience on the bench in the NFL. What a front office!!!

  7. Buccinfan Says:

Glad to see licht putting duemig in his place

  8. Bucnjim Says:

When Gruden talked about Glennon he mentioned the fact that he did have arm strength and could make every NFL throw. I’ll take Gruden’s evaluation of QB’s even though he does tend to sugar coat a lot of things. I think intelligence is the X factor these days. Defenses have become so complicated to read that it takes a higher IQ to figure them out.

  9. Tampabaybucfan Says:

To quote Hillary Clinton “At this point, what difference does it make?”

love it that deumig got put in his place about glennon. hopefully the joe’s can be enlightened too.

Yeah, but Lil Pup has Joe once a week. Licht can’t possibly have anything that intelligent to match Joe.

I can’t wait to see the new offense whomever is under center.

  13. The_Buc_Realist Says:

Seriously, I just can’t remember i better off-season than this, this last week has been particular great!

I really hope all this excitement translate quickly to the field.

  14. Bucks_Sam Says:

Outside of VJAck who did Mike have to throw to last season? The guy with the hair from Kid n Play who was cut from every team, watching replays of house party at home?

You can say there was some low lights (never is a for a rookie right?) but the highlights… those were the glimmer of something really good!

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IeDzn78MiYg

0:25 flips his write for 20 yards

1:30 55 yards in the air, dead on

1:50 the soft throw over the LB

2:30 outside shoulder back corner. only the receiver can get that one.

3:30 55 yards, right on the numbers.

    3:50 a laser through a window.

3:57 60 yard bomb, in stride, into the endzone.

  15. Seth B Says:

The Bucs are doing it the Right way.

Glennon got thrown to the Wolves last year because Schiano wanted to save his own a$$. He was and is a developmental guy with tons of upside and physical ability.

The fact that he’ll get a chance to sit and learn is the right way to do it. Definitely with a QB with limited mobility.

  16. Jeffobrien Says:

Big dog is starting to annoy me can tell he is getting old. Thinks he knows everything and starting to be a smart ass. Is was great to hear licht put him in his ace yesterday and let him know the bucs know a lot more about Glennon then he does

  17. Tackleblockwin Says:

The Bucs had to grab better, (more) targets for our QBs. Our front office believes they have done that. Now both McCown and Glennon have a better shot to show us what they can do. The good thing about adding playmakers to the O is that if our QBs don’t get it done, we still have solid targets at WR and TE to entice FA agent QBs down the road to come play in Tampa. In addition, we will have targets in place if we decide to draft a QB in the future. I’m rooting for our QBs, but adding solid targets will help this team now and in the future.

  18. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Wow….How interesing!!! Another opinion on Glennon….I just can’t wait for the next one….I’m on pins and needles….can’t sleep at night…searching the internet….thirst for knowledge….one of these days, I’ll have enough data on Glennon to form my own opinion.
Keep it coming….I just can’t get enough!!!

  19. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I know….before you tag me…..”Joe writes what interests Joe”

  20. Brandon Says:

I can’t think for a second that Licht has watched noodle-armed Glennon in person and really thinks he has a cannon for an arm. It sounds like he’s trying to sell other teams or fans on that.

I have to give Duemig credit though, he pulled no punches, was honest with Licht, and stated his thoughts. Though I don’t agree with him on Manziel (and I do on Glennon), I respect him from having the balls to ask the hard questions and try to make points with the GM.

  21. SoonerninTampa Says:

HAHAHA…awesome to hear that Licht pulled a ROCK on him…”Know your roll, Jabroni”.

It will probably be a while before Licht is back smackin the pup around…he doesn’t want people on his show that don’t agree with him.

    Ridiculous statement. –Joe

  22. Mike Glennon Mob Says:

Joe, don’t be upset. Join the MGM. We are accepting applicants.

  23. ToesOnTheLine Says:

‘Tis a great week to be in the MG8 mob. All the eyeball testers who swore Glennon sucks and that our ‘real coaching staff’ would see this are just dumbfounded by what most logical people saw…a rookie QB put into a bad situation yet put up more good film than bad. Accept it and we can all move forward

  24. mpmalloy Says:

The MGM is becoming brazen lately.

  25. Bucnjim Says:

    Bucks….Thanks for the highlight video!

Brandon…..You entitled to your opinion which is fine, but Glennon can throw with accuracy and strength. You could just watch the video for yourself or re-watch some games from 2013.

  26. DallasBuc Says:

TheBigDog?: “Mike Glennon sucks as far as that’s concerned. As far as that’s concerned Manziel is an exciting playmaker and he should have been drafted as far as that’s concerned.”
    Licht: “Your an idiot”
TheBigDog?: “No I’m not as far as that’s concerned. I’ve been doing radio in this town for a thousand years so you can’t disagree with me as far as that’s concerned.”
    Licht: “Your an idiot”

  27. lightningbuc Says:

I can’t think for a second that Licht has watched noodle-armed Glennon in person and really thinks he has a cannon for an arm. It sounds like he’s trying to sell other teams or fans on that.

    ________________

I love how the Glennon Hate Mob tries to read between the lines of everything Lovie and Licht say about him. It is so laughable.

It just can’t be, in their minds, that L&L may really see something in Glennon. Turning down trades, not drafting a QB, saying positive things about MG8 – none of it is good enough for them.

  28. lightningbuc Says:

    “as far as that’s concerned”

    _____________

LMAO Dallas Buc! I spit my lunch on the computer screen.

  29. That Guy Says:

Why would anyone say anything but positive things about a potentially future trade asset?

  30. Theodore Says:

Glennon has a cannon when compared to McCown, that is for sure.

  31. BucFan20 Says:

Expect the next try to discount Glennon to be a interview with Glazers. Maybe the media can do it that way.

  32. Schlomie Nudnik Gentile Says:

The “show host” could barely spit out his retort when expressing his disbelief regarding Licht’s statement about Glennon’s cannon arm. His was stuttering and stammering and basically dropped the subject after Licht responded. At the end of the interview he gave his typical nervous-fake-laugh (the laugh where he basically mimics Chris Thomas). He mentioned that Manziel would sell Jerseys and it would be “good for the area,” but when people suggested that Tebow would sell Jerseys he was totally against that of course.

  33. TheShaz Says:

You want to know why the MGM Mob is growing?

Comments in here and other sources, but mostly here and on local Sports Radio.

Our esteemed host on this site and Big Yappin’ Chihuahua on the radio. I get it – both of you wanted the Bucs to get Johnny Football. We get it. But the guys that get paid allot more to make that decision decided otherwise.

I am not a huge Glennon fan. I think he did as well as can be expected last season with….
    1. One single go to receiver
    2. Running backs that keep getting hurt.
    3. OL that was a human turnstile
    4. Horrible coaching that never heard of the work “Adjustment” during half time.
    5. Complaints about his check downs. That was from the coaching staff telling him to check down.

We had few weapons on office and by mid year it was less than that. But its a moot point really. Glennon is penciled in as the #2, McCown is the starter.

I was able to spot the smokescreen for what it was all offseason. I even bet money and WON that the Bucs were not going to get Johnny Football.

So the Bucs QB’s for 2015 will be McCown and Glennon – they BOTH showed enough on tape and in the mini camp to tell L&L they can look at other things in the draft.

As for those that despise (even if you cant admit it)Glennon….there is hope…

If McCown or Glennon and the Bucs offense becomes a run, run, pass & punt and cant score. Then you can jump up and down on your sofa’s and yell “I told ya so!”

If Johnny Football becomes the Rookie of the Year and leads the Browns to the playoffs….Then you can jump up and down on your sofa’s and yell “I told ya so!”

If the Bucs office can put points on the board, I hope this debate dies. Allot has to do with the offensive style. Nobody knows what Tedford is planning. Getting a RB that is known as a catching RB gives a clue. The Tight Ends is another.

  34. FLBoyInDallas Says:

  36. Buc1987 Says:

Oh and DallasBuc that was hilarious as far as I’m concerned.

    ________________________________________

Are you referring to the “QB of the future” for our Bucs, the same kid who was the best rookie QB in his class, despite two other guys going in rounds 1 and 2 respectively?

Were you a Freemanite? Josh Freeman’s failures, and his agent leaking info, caused Glennon to play too soon.

For what it’s worth, Glennon showed L&L enough to stick, and I am pleased we didn’t burn a premium pick on anything other than BPA.

Maybe I’m wrong, but wasn’t Mike Glennon’s rookie campaign comparable to that of Peyton Manning and Dan Marinos?

  40. tamparob Says:

I stopped listening to Duemig after he started with that “if you only know what I know” crap… “You’ll see. I can’t say anything because I was told in confidence off the record, but you’ll see. I’m right. ” Nice to see he tried that with Licht who really is the ultimate insider. Who knows? Maybe Licht is blowing smoke to generate trade interest, but he may also be right. Amazing what happens to a QB that is surrounded by good coaching and above average talent. Look at Alex Smith, Nick Foles, Brad Johnson, Tom Brady (yes, look at his scouting reports.. similar to MG8′s). Would Joe Montana have been the same without Clark, Rice, and Walsh? What if Cleveland or the Bengals drafted Peyton Manning instead of the Colts who had Harrison and had recently made the playoffs with Harbaugh as QB?

  41. Bradentuckey Buc Says:

L & L give Glennon camp and pre season to prove himself otherwise they go after Mallet. I’m putting my $$$ on The Professor MG8 all day tho now with legit coaching and some proper footwork training. I can almost guarantee that while Freeman is taking his noontime nap right about now, Glennon either has his face buried in the playbook or is on a field somewhere eager to earn the starting job. There is no replacement for HUNGER and HARD WORK! He’ll have to blow them away to steal it from McCown’s experience, but as soon as he goes down, as we all know he will, MG8 will run away with it for good.

  42. Buc1987 Says:

I’m telling you people this ONCE again. Schiano coddled Glennon. So any stat you pull can also be linked to Schiano.

  43. seminolebuccaneer Says:

Cannons are for pirate ships. Besides what good us a qb with a cannon when we have 2 possession WR. Starting for us?

  44. seminolebuccaneer Says:

Btw ryn leaf had a “Cannon”

  45. Buc1987 Says:

I’ll add that many people in here were saying Schiano was meddling in the offense too. So you can link the 32nd ranked offense to Schiano too if you like.

Damn it whatever happened to it’s all Schiano’s fault?

Maybe it’s out of sight out mind. So now it’s all Glennon’s fault. I think L&L think the exact opposite from some of you people. They know what he was dealing with last season. To some of you they are excuses. If L&L were to say the same things some of us have been saying, would you then come back with, now L&L are making excuses for Glennon.

  46. Barry Says:

I’d take MG8 over MattyIce over RG3 and C.Newton. Honestly.

  47. Pierce Says:

I like that licht said he has better intelligence than duemig. Steve’s a smart guy, but he doesn’t know everything (even though he thinks he does)

  48. Buc1987 Says:

    seminolebuccaneer Says:

“Btw ryn leaf had a “Cannon”

Ryan Leaf had no work ethic and no heart for the game. That point is moot when it comes to Glennon.

  49. bigpoppabuc Says:

His arm is good, and so it seems his intelligence… But his mentality is his best quality. He’s an all out competitor and a bit of a gunslinger. Watch that Seahawks game again. He made a handful of very ballsy throws and showed no fear of that great Seattle D.
he’ll be able to pick up the system pretty quickly and if he’s able to play in the same one for a few years… Watch out, cause this kid wants to be elite and has the potential to do so.

  50. seminolebuccaneer Says:

Buc1987 easy man i was. Pointing out that having a cannon doesnt make you a good qb. Glennon doesnt need a cannon to be our starter. He has everything he needs it just needs a little shinning up

  51. That Guy Says:

Buc1987, don’t worry. We all still know Gregory was garbage.

  52. Eric Says:

I do remember Gruden saying Glennon has a strong arm. Something about an out pass he hadn’t seen anyone but Favre throw.

Lets hope all of this is true and the man develops into a good starter.

They did their evaluation, made their decision, and its their jobs if its wrong.

    Go Bucs.

  53. seminolebuccaneer Says:

    @Buc1987
I suppose we’ll have to see if Glennon will be any good, since we have no other options. Personally, I believe not drafting a QB will turn out to be the first and biggest mistake L&L make.

Perhaps Glennon will turn out good. Even if he does, not drafting a QB at some point will prove out to be a mistake, because of injuries.

Of all the positions that needed filling, RB was not one. Regardless of the skill set the RB possesses. He wasn’t a first round pick for a reason. Meanwhile, if our lousy oline results in QB injuries, we have zero depth after Glennon, who will likely go down as well (because of the oline).

I love it when you people talk about Glennon’s low yards per attempt and calling him Captain Checkdown. You try lining up behind that putrid line with that weak and slow receiving corp and see how often you can take a 5 step drop and let it fly. They were 4-12 for a lot of reasons. But it was pretty clear to L&L that reason #1 was the OLine. I am sure that is Johnny Football puts up Glennon’s numbers in Cleveland this year Joe will proclaim him the second coming.

  65. Buc1987 Says:

Sorry for the rant, sometimes it just gets to be too bizarre………

Isn’t Licht from that successful franchise of New England? Where they drafted a 6th round statue at QB? They have not bucked to the new wave of mobile QBs? They have 2 statues behind him I beleieve? Anyways maybe Licht has a blueprint that is successful up in New England and that the spread offense will probably get stopped by NFL defenses and the one consistent has been the tall strong armed QB and great defense. I wanted Johnny Football but maybe Licht is on to something…I do know for big dogs sake and mine Johnny Football will not be walking onto RayJay as a buccaneer anytime soon so lets accept that Licht has a blueprint to win a championship here, I am more positive than those last 2 morons that were running things

  69. Buc1987 Says:

Didn’t see the “cannon” last year. If you look at the highlights on youtube. McCown has more zip on the ball and throws a nice tight spiral.

  71. BamBamBuc Says:

Either someone needs to put more black powder in that “canon”, or we need to tell VJ and the new guys to quit running so far downfield!!! Our canon can’t throw it that far and they’ll have to turn around and come back for it. Heck, the refs waived off a PI call on the defense last year because the ball was so underthrown they felt VJ (yeah, the older, slower WR) couldn’t have made it back to the ball.

  72. JoeMan(Ziel)CrushFan Says:

The only thing that bothers me is Lovie coming out and claiming a starting QB. Maybe he’s only saying what Tedford is saying but if not I’d rather him have his hands off the offense. If Tedford felt that Glennon is guy then let Glennon be the guy. If Tedford thought Johnny Football was he guy then I would hope that they would get him his guy. I just hope he can let Tedford run his offense with his players.

On the Glennon note, Glennon was shredding the Seahawks defense with no huddle and Schiano wouldn’t let it continue because we hadn’t practiced the no huddle. Imagine if Glennon had a coach who did the things that worked rather than what we practiced that didn’t work. That is only one example that Schiano admitted to, imagine what went on behind that scenes that none of the fans know about. I’d be excited to see what Glennon can do with this new coaching.

Last thing, I think Joe has done an excellent job of letting go of the golden boy now that that draft is over and he’s not here. He hasn’t changed his stance on Glennon and nor should he if that’s how he feels but I think the Johnny Football tidal wave is over.
