The Arians Way

February 5th, 2019

Trendsetter?

The Bucs might just be onto something here.

We all know the NFL is a copycat league. Big time. Just look at the Rams, who got lucky with a young coach Sean McVay and just like 2009 when teams were groveling for the next Josh McDaniels, guys with age and experience were deemed off limits.

Shoot, even the Cardinals hired a young coach, Kliff Kingsbury, and touted how he knew McVay as a persuasive item on Kingsbury’s resume.

But good guy Mike Tanier of Bleacher Report has a hunch Team Glazer, who bucked the youth trend to drag Bucco Bruce Arians, 66, out of retirement, is on the cusp of the next NFL coaching movement.

If Bruce Arians can get Jameis Winston to cut down on his interceptions, NFL teams will forget about Next Sean McVays and start hiring every 66-year-old with a white beard and a little golf cap they can find.

When the heck have the Bucs last been saluted like that? Joe is guessing the last time Team Glazer and the Bucs were ahead of the curve like that was when they traded for Chucky.

Joe talked to a lot of folks while in Atlanta for Super Bowl week and Joe was hard-pressed to find anyone who didn’t think Team Glazer and Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht made a wise move in hiring Arians.

I’m probably more excited about Bruce Arians agreeing to coach our Buccaneers than just about anyone, but apparently for different reasons than most. Lots of folks seem to think that Coach Arians will be very ‘hands-on’ … he’s gonna “fix’ Jameis by getting him “to cut down on his interceptions” for instance. He’s going to design plays that’ll put our RBs & WRs in position to be more successful, etc, etc. I personally think folks will be surprised by Coach’s modus-operandi here at Tampa Bay.

What’s got me so excited is that he’s surrounded himself with a coaching staff that’s not only VERY familiar with HIM, but it’s also highly experienced with a proven track record (ie, competent). It’s also a great mixture of ‘age’ & ‘youth’ and that sets us up for many, many years of success. Read through this coaching staff’s bio’s at https://www.buccaneers.com/team/coaches-roster/ and you come away totally impressed by the QUALITY of the coaching staff that Bruce Arians has put together, from top to bottom.

I see Coach Arians as not just our coach, but also as our President of Football Operations. Also see our new DC Todd Bowles as his successor-in-waiting. Bowles is the one who’ll rebuild this Bucs defense, not BA. Leftwich is the one who’ll be designing & calling plays (under BA’s guidance surely). Christiansen is the one who’ll be spending most of his time ‘fixing’ Jameis (not Leftwich as so many seem to have assumed … and BTW, Clyde did a pretty good job with some QB named Andrew Luck). Yup, Coach Arians is building from the top down, and we’ll be reaping the benefits for many many years to come. Exciting times ahead.

  4. Wausa Says:

The common theme is the Bucs problem is the QB.
Yes Jamies needs to cut down on interceptions, but the Bucs problem is not the Qab the problem is a horrific defense, bad offensive line, poor running game and terrible special teams play.

  5. SOEbuc Says:

    Joe

Especially with the national analyst, it’s all talk about how Jason Licht bringing in BA to work with Jameis and the offense might have been a grand slam. But Licht’s plan since he got here has been “build through the draft” and that’s what he’s been doing, especially on defense. A lot of people have the idea that BA is gonna wipe out a lot of players in the offseason and try to start fresh but they’re also saying he only has a few years and wants to win now. I don’t think Licht’s just gonna roll over and let all the young talent he scouted go. They’re mostly all under cheap rookie contracts and the Bucs don’t have that much dough at the moment. I was putting in my opinion on a previous article about stuff that would be interesting and what your thoughts might be and I would like to hear more about the defense. For instance, what Bowles defense looked like when it was successful? I know he likes big CB so I’m excited to see how high Carlton Davis can go. Other players that might be in trouble of a job even if they show potential but don’t fit his type of scheme. We’ve been drafting Tampa-2 since Dungy so this is very exciting change in defense. But as I also said before, you’re a good reporter and would never tell you how to do your job and it’s your site so you get to write whatever the hell you want, but that was just another idea that I thought would make some cool, interesting articles.

  6. Clodhopper Says:

Really? GM’s are like fans. I find it hard to believe GM’s can be that stupid.

GM: “Are you as good as McVay?”
    Coach: “I know McVay”
GM: “Good enough for me. You’re hired!!”

GM: “I dont think you’re very qualified but if you could wear a derby when you meat the owners, that would help our chances. Throw out a rhyming catchphrase too to guarantee you are hired.”

  8. Bucnjim Says:

When you are badly in need of a culture change it’s probably best to go with age and experience especially when it’s a salty dog like Arians. This team for the past decade has been weak mentally and physically. Plus calling these current players a team is a stretch by itself. More like a bunch of individuals out for themselves trying to play NFL football. Our team leaders through these past years have spent more time telling the coaches what they will and will not do than they actually produce on the field. Great players will do whatever it takes to win even if it means playing a different position or sitting out situational plays. When the inmates run the asylum nothing good ever comes from it.

LOL, bring something to the table better than that.

It has been a LONG time since the national media was this positive about ANY move made by the Bucs.

“When you are badly in need of a culture change it’s probably best to go with age and experience especially when it’s a salty dog like Arians. This team for the past decade has been weak mentally and physically.”

Agreed. I want to wipe out almost all the defensive back ups and bring in experienced vets that can also play rotation and have experience on great teams. You see that every year in a team that goes deep into the playoffs or into the Super Bowl.

  12. stpetebucsfan Says:

Yes the NFL is a copycat league but they frequently go overboard in their reaction.

And then totally oversimplify in their conclusions. So from ONE game we’ve come to the conclusion now that experience and longevity are better than youth and enthusiasm.

I laugh at this debate not only the NFL but in life in general. Which is better. They are BOTH good. Depends completely on the individual we’re talking about or the situation involved.

ONE game proves nothing. Since I am an old dude and realize the value of experience I tend to be prejudiced but I also completely admire new ideas and thinking outside the box which typically occur with younger folks…but not always…just generally.

I’m more than comfortable with Arians. He seems to still have the touch with the younger players. I would not want Tom Coughlin or Schiano two men I believe are out of touch.

My point is simple. Successful coaches have varied backgrounds and age and experience are only ONE criteria. More than one way to succeed.

BTW It seems half of this board does not wish to celebrate the hiring of Arians and enjoy one of the rare times we are actually getting lauded for ANYTHING. Enjoy the moment guys…it’s all we have…literally…you should ALWAYS live in the moment.

As the man reputed to be the smartest ever..Solomon once said…Eat, drink, and be merry for tomorrow we die.

I just do not get the skepticism over all of this. Again I do not believe the strongest optimists like me are suggesting anybody head to Vegas and bet the farm…just enjoy what according to virtually all the experts has been an excellent hire.

“… the problem is a horrific defense, bad offensive line, poor running game [kinda redundant–due to the OL] and terrible special teams play.”

    ^^^^^What he said.^^^^^

Much of our QB suckiness last year (with both of them) would not have occurred if the team wasn’t putting ALL of the pressure on them.

  14. Destinjohnny Says:

If he can turn jameis into a top 15 qb
    I’ll be blown away

  15. Barack's Crack Pipe Says:

    @Clodhopper

I’m not sure if “meating” the owners would boost your chances of getting hired. I guess it depends on the owners.

    Haha

  16. ERIC Says:

@Destinjohnny- Jameis had a 100+ passer rating over the last 6-1/2 games when he came back. He threw 13td and 4 ints (2 of which were end of game anomolies). That translates to 32td, 10int, 4500yds and almost 500 yards rushing. At that pace he would’ve been 8th in passer rating, 6th in td, 9th in int, and 6th in pass yards, and 5th in rush yards out of 30 starting qbs. Seems pretty top 10 to me.

  17. Casual Observer Says:

Show me is the right attitude, it seems. But there is every reason for optimism with this coaching staff, imo.

Seriously, when does free agency begin?

Also, when does it end? Is there a rush on the Donavan Smith decision, or can that be made after the draft? I’m unclear in the timing of it all.

    65%, 32td, 10int, 4500pass yd, 500 rush.

Any Rip Van Winkle who has awoken and watched Winston the last 6 1/2 games would see that Winston does not need fixing. Koetter has to be given credit by benching Winston when that is what was needed. The OL, running game, defense and special teams including the kicker is what needs fixing. Take any 6 consecutive game sample from Winston’s career and you will not find,

    63% completion
    13/2 real TD/INT ratio
    278 pass yds a game
    26 yards rush per game

There are Buc fans who still are sound asleep somewhere in the Catskills.

  30. BucsFIRE Says:

Jesus, give it a rest, destin.
JW has 4 int’s in his last 230 attempts.
Obviously he has made great strides in that area.

  31. Destinjohnny Says:

Haha when u go crazy I have to real u in a bit mate

  32. Rod Munch Says:

The INTs mostly came from when the team was already down big and Jameis was trying to get the team back into the game. Ugh, so sick of this boring garbage of people talking about INTs when they don’t give them any context.

Some context however is giving in QBR, which does in fact look at INTs based on when they occured, so an INT when you’re down 28-6 in the 2nd quarter because you have the worst defense in the NFL is not the same as an INT that is in the 4th quarter of a game where you’re up by 6, and Jameis had the 5th highest QBR in football.

Those who just keep talking about turnovers are morons. Give them context or shut up about them. He had a bad game road game in bad weather in Cincy, so what, that literally happens to nearly every QB now and again. Outside of that game you can pick out a few plays here or there where he Winston threw some balls he shouldn’t, but so what, you can literally do that with any QB. Winston has literally had the worst defense in football since he got into the NFL while also playing the hardest schedule of any QB, while outside of 2015 having one of the bottom 5 running games in the NFL.

  33. Rod Munch Says:

BucsFIRE – Also two of those four INTs were on hail marys, and another was when Mike Evans got his feet stuck in the turf in Baltimore and couldn’t make his cut, and the final TO, if memory serves correct, was on a tipped pass.

  35. BucsFIRE Says:

Pointless, destin, to raise any points with you.
You just then change the narrative to something else.
You dont like Jameis, man, yay…. good for you.

  36. stpetebucsfan Says:

So I took a tennis lesson today. My instructor is a grizzled old vet. Knows the game and can still make it look easy..even on bad wheels.

He’s major sports fan and of course the SB came up but I asked him about JW. He was incredibly negative. I said why? Do you think JW is a head case? His answer was damning. He said yes…just another Josh Freeman. OUCH.

Not saying I agree…just pointing out the skepticism from fans.

  37. Destinjohnny Says:

    I like jameis a lot
I just don’t think we can win a championship with him

  38. DaPostman Says:

    @DestinJohnny,

Which QB do you think could have led the Bucs to a championship in any of the last 4 years?

  39. Destinjohnny Says:

Tom Brady is better than jameis

  40. Destinjohnny Says:

We go 9-7 10-6 with Brady

  41. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

Pass the Buc – uh yeah it is a slow news day. It’s two fking days after the super bowl and the bucs weren’t in it. There literally is nothing to write about now but just is trying to find interesting nuggets for us die hards. Don’t be a pr1ck to Joe!

  42. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

St Pete I would venture to guess you’re tennis instructor isn’t really a fan of the Bucs and doesn’t really understand the difference between Freeman and JW.

  43. Jimmy Says:

We made the wrong hire. We should have hired the Rams’ water boy.

  44. DaPostman Says:

    @DestinJohnny,

So you are saying that it would take arguably one of the top 3 QB’s of all time to get the Bucs to a 10-6 record. That is a very interesting observation since the Patriots were 11-5 this year with Tom Brady.

Let me ask you one more question. What do you think the Bucs record would have been if they gave up exactly 4 points less every game?

  45. Destinjohnny Says:

    #shouldawouldacoulda
Brady with our tight ends and wideouts would have been off the Charts
    Think Fitz was unstoppable ?
    Jameis has consistency issues
    Always has always will
    Not a bust
    Middle of the pack
    Tua in 20

  46. Dapostman Says:

Thanks for not answering my question Johnny and thanks for your opinion on Tom Brady. You really went out on a limb there. Like Tom Brady doesn’t have good WR’s and TE’s and RB’s NOW and yet went 11-5.

As they say opinions are like butt holes. Everyone has one and most of them stink. Including yours.

BTW, the answer to my question is 9-7.

  47. Destinjohnny Says:

You called me out last year for saying we had 6-10 talent as I recall

  48. DaPostman Says:

    @Johnny,

Please backup your statement with fact. I would love to see the post where I called you out. If you don’t post it you are just spreading ‘fake news’. I’ll wait.
