Franchise Record In Reach

October 8th, 2018

History in sight.

He’s just 10 plays away.

With 12 games left in the season, America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, is just 10 throws away from being the franchise leader in touchdown passes.

When Jameis hit Cam Brate against the Bears for a 16-yard touchdown, he threw his 70th touchdown pass since the Bucs drafted him in 2015.

Below is where Jameis stands among franchise leaders in passing touchdowns.

Rank, player, years played, TD passes thrown

1. Josh Freeman, 2009-13 80

2. Vinny Testaverde, 1987-92 77

3. Doug Williams, 1978-82 73

4. Trent Dilfer, 1994-99 70

4. Jameis Winston, 2014-pres. 70

With Todd Monken calling offensive shots and the Bucs really shooting the ball downfield with a loaded receiving corps, Joe doesn’t think 10 touchdown passes in 12 games is out of reach.

And when Jameis ties or sets the franchise record in four years as a starter, some Bucs fans will want to get rid of him, why exactly?

  1. Walter Seidel Says:

Because he’s not a good person. That’s why, Joe.

  2. Erik w/ Clean Athletics Says:

    Joe,

The answer is: lack of consistent execution.

Jameis has to end his rollercoaster level of play.

  3. ATrain Says:

    Stats are for losers

I watch the Bucs for the team to Win

Not to see what Bucs record Winston broke

I’ve never thrown a Passing recorded party
I have for a playoff or Superbowl

  4. Wausa Says:

It is becoming a sad world where people that never have spent time with Jamies have become judge, jury and executioner of him.

Jamies will hit that mark before the Bucs start the 2nd half of the season.

  5. BrianBucs Says:

Stats are for losers and can be very deceiving. Those garbage time TD’s really do add up.

  6. Kalind Says:

To these Jameis haters. Maybe we trade for Aaron Rodgers? It should only take 5 first round picks, 3 second round picks, and a player. Nbd.

    Or.

We can stick with a kid who is STILL one of the youngest QBs in the league. Do you really want to dump him just to have him beat the hell out of us when he’s playing for the Jags at 28y/o? I don’t.

  7. sunshine Says:

Go ask Publix what they think of Winston !…maybe ask his university how much money they had to pay out for his indiscretion?? You might ask the bucs if he was truthful with them about the uber accident ?? Has his play on the field shown worthy of being the #1 pick in the entire draft ?? Nationally is Winston thought of by the nfl as a good representative ?? Would you let him date your daughter??

  8. Pickgrin Says:

LOL – Current “runner up” for all time Buccaneer TD passes – 1987 first overall pick Vinny Testaverde had 112 INTs to go along with those 77 TDs.

In his 2nd season, Testaverde threw 13 TDs and THIRTY FIVE interceptions….

  9. Loyaltotheend Says:

12 game audition to show he can consistently

    Protect the ball
    Make good decisions
Hit the open man and keep drives alive (no need to force balls to Evans and Brate as defenenses can’t double all these targets)

  10. FR Says:

Hey Joe could you show us the turnover and interception record holders just to see how JW rank in those stats?

  11. Architek Says:

Ah why bother presenting a counterpoint-

Clearly, Winston has unequivocal immunity among Bucs lovers.

Odd that if Winston was so decorated why doesn’t anyone outside of Tampa highlight these accomplishments? Empty stats, not likely, but big picture I hear more about Goff and Wentz and Mahomes performances than Jameis dating back to last two years.

    Strange to me.

  12. joestang Says:

leading this franchise in td passes is not a great accomplishment.

  13. Alphabucfan Says:

Wausa you are exactly right. It’s not our job to judge others anyway.

  14. pelbuc Says:

Irrelevant stat. at least one third of those TDs are in garbage time after he’s thrown several picks or fumbles. He’s one mistake away from banishment from the league and he’s an embarrassment to the franchise. Bucs should get a younger version of Fitz. Oh, and what Seidel said pretty much sums it up.

  15. Buccfan37 Says:

Time to go big Jameis and show the fans the way to wins.

  16. SteveK Says:

    Kalind,

Jameis’ age is not really a perk. Age is a perk when the player is on their rookie deal.

Jameis is about to account for $21 million next year. He is also one incident away from a year long suspension.

With that said, I am catiously hopeful that Winston balls out and has a great season, leading us to an exciting pursuit of he playoffs.

I am most looking at Winston’s Td: Turnover Ratio. Last year Jameis has 19 TD’s and 18 turnovers. Of the 18 turnovers, Jameis has 8 additional fumbles that were recovered by our team.

Securing the ball would go a long way.

  17. Anonymous Says:

    Well said, @Buccfan37

  18. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

    Well said, @Buccfan37

  19. Bucsfanman Says:

These stories are becoming the equivalent to drinking vodka and red bull. To quote Morgan Freeman,”It’s like getting electrocuted and drunk at the same time!”
Stats are nice. Wins are better. WIN!

  20. OneBuc55 Says:

That fact he could own the touchdown record and the passing record before the age of 25 is absolutely amazing…

It’s no doubt in my mind that he would have more wins as well if it was not for the poor defensive play, and an the inconsistent kicking game and running game we’ve had since he’s been here…

The sad thing is he’s not getting the respect that he is due for what he’s done on the field at such a young age…

Off the field, is he young and dumb? Probably… is he a knucklehead? Maybe…But is he the villain that the media has made him out to be? absolutely Not!…

I’m rooting for you JW…get your sh!t together a prove all your doubters wrong…

  21. BucsFanSince1976 Says:

This is the 1st year JW will have a decent O-Line in front of him. Bottom line is simple ; JW keeps his nose clean and Bucs make playoffs he will be a Buc for a long time and get paid. Lost on most is the fact that he is only 24 , he has admitted that alcohol was a contributing factor to his off field issues and according to JW he has eliminated alcohol from his beverage menu completely. I just hope our porous sieve of a defense does not keep the team from achieving their goals , because that certainly may happen regardless of how well JW performs. Personally , I believe if Winston had a different skin color that the negative banter would reduce by 30% , as that is the minimum percentage of racists in our country. GO JW and GO BUCS!!!!!!!!!

  22. Buccernutter Says:

I don’t know how much more I can see posts from people who suggest Jameis’s stats are due to garbage time.

You guys are so dumb. Seriously.

Jameis has not played any more garbage time than any other quarterback on average. The most recent sample size against Chicago was, sure, but not it hasn’t been more than most other QBs in his career.

This fan base is sooooo dumb. Joe you must go crazy from time to time.

    Jameis Winston 45 18 27 .400

  24. Wausa Says:

    Well said @Buccernutter.

  25. Buc50 Says:

I hope people realize that every Bucs QB has had a ton of garbage time. We just haven’t been very good. Don’t let you hate for the guy get in the way of the facts. Jameis is one of the best QB’s this franchise has ever had. When it’s all said and done, he will smash just about every record in our pathetic book.

  26. Bird Says:

    Can’t use age excuse anymore.

Baker mayfield , Mahommes, Goff , wentz all young guys that are blowing up on the scene. They look like super stars after year 1 or 2

  27. Mg Says:

Interesting post @DayOnePaul. Could you also add average offensive and defensive team ranks during those time periods?

  28. Oneilbucs Says:

Man y’all just hate Winston so much . His stats is only time when y’all say stats is for losers. His race plays apart of the hate people have for him . That’s just the truth no race card but truth for some of y’all. All I heard about fizpatrick is his stats for 2 games. This fan base sucks. When you want him gone for fizpatrick when you know he’s not going to lead the team to the playoffs is just crazy. I hope they give y’all what y’all want. Cuz I know he will win somewhere else just like the rest of them . That’s the problem with this franchise y’all want choir boys and that’s cool but you got to have dogs on your team to win .

  29. D-Rome Says:

And when Jameis ties or sets the franchise record in four years as a starter, some Bucs fans will want to get rid of him, why exactly?

Because the Bucs aren’t winning with him. Because despite the stats he’s still in the bottom 3rd of starting NFL QBs.

  30. ATLBuc Says:

Some people have such horrible pasts that when given an opportunity to criticize others they cannot pass it up b cause putting others down makes them feel better about who they are. Anybody can pile on when someone is down. It takes a bigger person to forgive and move on. There was once a vicious mob who were out to get a woman who was accused of adultery. A very kind and forgiving man faced down that angry crowd and said the same thing I’m about to say: Let the person who is without sin cast the first stone. So, if you are unkind to your wife, or beat your wife or have looked at a woman too long or drink too much or don’t take a bath every day or smoke weed or cigarettes or are prejudice or pick boogers in public, go ahead and cast the first stone at Jameis

  31. Bird Says:

With that said. This is great opportunity for Jameis to show what’s he got.

No defense on either team. And will be a shoot out.

  32. Pit Says:

We Definetely need to bring Freeman back according to those stats.
Why bet on Winston when Freeman already has the record.

  33. Oneilbucs Says:

Bird Philly and Rams had to move up in the draft to get them that means they went to a team that was ok not great Winston went to a team that was 2-14 . And for a rookie Winston played well to he threw 5 tds in one game his rookie year neather one of them did that . Mayfield will be a good quarter back maybe one day we still don’t know. And in Kansas city look at who the coach is . Dirk n Mike Smith was in Atlanta look how Matt Ryan plays after they left look how the running back look after they left . So you tell me the problem.

  34. Defense Rules Says:

@Buccernutter … “This fan base is sooooo dumb. Joe you must go crazy from time to time.’ LMAO. Yup, Joe’s shaking his head all the way to the bank, muttering under his breath “The dumber, the better. Ka-ching, Ka-ching.”

What I still can’t figure out is why folks in Tampa think Jameis is on a 1-year interview. At best he’s on a 3-year interview. Just can’t visualize the Glazer Boyz plunking down upwards of $300 mil for a 10-year contract UNTIL they’re convinced beyond a shadow of a doubt that Good Jameis has beaten the daylights out of Bad Jameis & that he won’t return. That won’t happen in 1 year, or even in 2 years.

  35. ben Says:

as a season tkt holder ..Trade Winston and get a qb that all fans local and national can be proud of. …. or get a qb that is more accurate throwing the long ball and trade Winston!

  36. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Raheem Morris: “Stats are for losers”

    Raheem Morris…a loser.

Cannot believe people use that quote from a losing coach.

  37. Hawk Says:

    What ‘Defense Rules’ said.
    *All of it*.

  38. Eric Says:

Jameis will have that wrapped up in three weeks.

  39. pick6 Says:

everyone on that list totaled either 4 or 5 seasons with the bucs. all it takes to rewrite the bucs career record book is for somebody to finally earn a second contract

  40. small axe Says:

    nice try joe

  41. BrianBucs Says:

To show how absolutely meaningless this stat is, Josh Freeman is the leader, lol

  42. Buc1987 Says:

    Go Bucs!

    Go Jameis!

  43. Dre Says:

Joe because we want wins …. throw the touchdown passes and yards away

  44. Reach87 Says:

Self-righteous. Funny. Look in the mirror (really look) one time. Sad. Go Bucs!

  45. Some Guy's Burner Says:

“Because he’s not a good person. That’s why, Joe.”

    This.

The local media here goes out of it’s way to whitewash Jameis Winston’s past behavior so fans can feel better about cheering for him or buying a #3 jersey.

  46. ATrain Says:

    Ok Jamies Defenders

    And CARD PLAYER

Don’t blindly follow this man either

We have a powerful Offense a bench QB ( y’all wotds) won two games against tough teams

    NO EXCUSES.
Jamies wins great go forward Jamies doesn’t Bye Bye

Simple as that. Plenty of guys killing it in 2 years. Jamies in 4th year time to show us.

  47. Malcolm-Reynolds Says:

Saying that young QB’s like Goff, Wentz, Mahomes, and Baker Mayfield are better QB’s than Jameis just because they are winning right now is NOT taking into account one important aspect of the team game that IS football. Those QB’s have good/great defenses. And those defenses don’t just STOP the other teams offences. Often times they take the ball away and give THEIR offense great field position. Comparing OUR defense with those guys defenses is a little like comparing apples and oranges. Not to mention the RUNNING GAMES the first 3 QB’s on that little list have had recently. If our QB had at least a DECENT defense, and a middle of the road running game and STILL didn’t win more I’d join the chorus of those who want to start over at QB. Some people’s agenda seems to overrun the process of looking at ALL of the facts.

  48. Buc50 Says:

If I had Todd Gurley lining up behind me, I could zip a pass or 2. Having a quality running game does wonders for you offense.

  49. BucsFanSince1976 Says:

JW has a rest of the season interview and that is it Drules and Hawk , Bucs have to decide whether to keep or cut JW before March 11 2019 due to his option kicking in for year 5 at 20 million if JW is on the roster on that date. Koetter and Smith are also on a 1 year leash , because if they do not win now it is their funerals. Eric Reid being good enough to sign and start at safety for the Panthers in their win over the Gmen. The failure of Licht to sign Eric Reid should tell you all you need to know about the Bucs braintrust.

  50. Hawk Says:

JW *should* have the rest of the season to show his worth. I cannot imagine Koetter/Licht seeing it any other way. Their jobs might (probably) hang on the outcome.
As far as Reid (or Mack), did you stop to think that *maybe* they didn’t want to come to Tampa? When a player doesn’t sign here, it doesn’t mean that he wasn’t pursued.

  51. AlteredEgo Says:

    5. Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Ryan Finley, QB, NC State (6’4″ 212)
Finley is an accurate passer and one of the top QB prospects for 2019. He threw for more than 6,500 yards for NC State over the past two seasons.

  52. Vincente Says:

These stats make me yawn. The fact that Josh Freeman is the top TD passer in this franchises history tells us all one thing. Tampa Bay has a horrible history of QB play. These stats lie and Winston will go on and get the record but it will do no good for this franchise does not know how to put a good season together. Even if luck struck Tampa this year nobody sees this team as a playoff contender. NO ONE. These stats are stupid. I guess if your still closed minded these stats make you happy. But for those of us who see the whole picture it means absolutely nothing until this team learns to play into late January.

  53. D-Rome Says:

Saying that young QB’s like Goff, Wentz, Mahomes, and Baker Mayfield are better QB’s than Jameis just because they are winning right now is NOT taking into account one important aspect of the team game that IS football. Those QB’s have good/great defenses.

Actually, KC’s defense is pretty terrible. Almost as bad as the Bucs, but Mahomes is amazing. The Rams won a shootout yesterday with the Seahawks thanks to Goff. Baker Mayfield found a way to get his team in position to win. Wentz was on his way to winning the MVP last year before he was injured.

I don’t think Mayfield is a better QB than Winston, but I’d take those other three over Winston right now.

  54. Bucsfanman Says:

    Tick-tock! Winston’s on the clock!
No more excuses. He’s in his 4th year as a QB in the NFL with the same playbook. Being young is moot. We have now seen the capabilities of this offense.
    Tick-tock. Do us proud #3!
    Go Bucs!

  55. Joe Says:

Odd that if Winston was so decorated why doesn’t anyone outside of Tampa highlight these accomplishments?

They do and Joe has highlighted them.

But if you guys want a 21st century version of Shaun King — hey, he won! — knock yourselves out.

Pretty sure his name is Josh McClown. Hey, you can feel good about him. He’s a nice guy (and Joe gets crushed when he mentions this about Mike Smith).

  56. Godeep66 Says:

He also leads the alltime list in turnovers

  57. LakeLand Says:

The only record that counts, is Jameis 18-27 record

  58. unbelievable Says:

Every single Bucs QB listed there has had a losing record except B Johnson and J Garcia. Thats’ this franchise for you.

Now with all that said, regarding other young QBs who are “better”:

How many games has Wentz won with the worst defense and worst running game in the NFL?

How many games has Goff won with the worst defense and worst running game in the NFL?

Ok then. Let’s see how the rest of the season plays out at least.

  59. Oneilbucs Says:

I’m almost done with this fan base. Just face it and tell the truth about what you realy want . That is for a lot of y’all you want a white quarterback. That’s the first thing for for some of y’all. The others y’all realy don’t know football you just listen to what the national media say and you believe what they say . You want a quarterback who they love and give excuses for like Andrew Luck. Me I know that Jamies can win I just know that football is a team sport not a quarter back sport . I rather have a great defense then a great offence any day . Jamies is not perfect but he is still learning that’s my hold point . If you can’t stop the other teams you are going to lose. How many times the Browns stop the ravens what was the score of the game . Jamies have put this team in position to win a lot defense gives up the game. Baker threw 1 int and his defense gave him back the ball .How long did the game last in over time ? Now you yell me if our defense would have last that long in over time. Remember last year 5 games Jamies had the lead in the 4th quarter and defense gives up the game at the end. Y’all and the national media will blame Jamies for it because of 1 int or a fumble and the first half of the game. I know that a lot of people hates Winston on this site and national media. Go bucs and go Jamies you got my support this year ………….

  60. Buc1987 Says:

The best quarterback the Bucs have ever had.

  61. Oneilbucs Says:

Buc1987 you are right brother they just can’t see it . The national media hate Winston so much they just believe what the national media say.

  62. AlteredEgo Says:

    O’Neil you are sick human

  63. Jean Lafitte Says:

Big deal. It’s a passing league more than ever now. Had the other past Buc QB’s had the same rules in place Winston would need more than 80 to set the record. Plus if Winston moves into a fifth year he will have had more time than most of the QB’s on that list. Trying to use cherry picked stats when it’s clearly not apples to apples to prop Winston up is blatantly bias. Who gives a rats @ss. The only stat that matters is can Winston win games?

  64. Jean Lafitte Says:

    Oneilbucs

    racist

  65. BucsFanAgain? Says:

Just saw Brees get the all-time yardage record. You will never see a fanbase embrace winston the way that New Orleans has embraced Brees. Never. The “hassles” that Joe and others want everyone to dismiss are unforgivable to most of us.

You don’t hear Brees’ fans, Wentz’s fans, Goff’s fans, Mariotta’s fans, etc say”Sure he’s a liar, a thief, and accused of multiple bad acts against women, but boy can he throw the football!” How can anyone be glad that this guy is the face of the franchise? You are settling for something that is unnecessary for victory.

Your backup quarterback put up numbers that were literally record-breaking while playing with a bad defense and bad running game. He was fun to watch, loved by his team, didn’t cost you $20 million dollars a year, and is also a good person. Why bring the dishonor back to the team when every bit of evidence shows you that a deal with the devil is not needed or wanted by so many in Tampa Bay?

  66. HomerSimpsonRocks Says:

    BucsFanAgain: well said.

  67. Bucs541 Says:

What’s the interception record? I’m guessing he’s on pace to break that record, too?
