“They Want To See Runs More Than One Time”

October 8th, 2018

A few interesting nuggets from Dirk Koetter, architect of the No. 2 offense in the NFL (432.8 yards per game), which is fueled by the No. 1-ranked passing unit.

The Bucs are scoring points and moving the ball, but there’s no balance to the offense, which has the fan skeptics and critics freaking out.

These folks seem to care less about wins and more about statistical balance. They’re also peeved that the Bucs paid huge cash for a center and drafted a running back No. 38 overall and still are struggling to run effectively.

Man, some people love to be negative about a successful.

Dirk Koetter was asked about the sputtering ground game on his Buccaneers Radio Network show, and Koetter reiterated that the Bucs haven’t run enough for a variety of reasons. But he also noted that volume is what top running backs need.

“I’ve been fortunate to be around some great running backs, Fred Taylor, Maurice Jones-Drew, Michael Turner, Steven Jackson. And every single one of those guys, they want the rock. They want multiple runs and they want to see runs more than one time,” Koetter said. “We’re just not running the ball very much right now.”

Interesting that Koetter didn’t mention Doug Martin but mentioned Jackson, who had two nothing-special seasons in his two years with Koetter in Atlanta at the tail end of his career. Still, it’s an important point. Running backs love to see the same call multiple times so they can read the play better, the second and third time.

Peyton Barber has a respectable 15 carries for 57 yards through the past two games, but that’s very little work when it comes to establishing a rhythm and grinding out a successful day.

“I do think that our passing game will help our running game as time goes on,” Koetter added.

It certainly should. Joe would love to see the Bucs run more draws, and downhill runs out of four-wide sets.

Joe does know this: Atlanta’s terrible run defense should be the perfect tonic to balance the offense on Sunday.

They really lit up the scoreboard in Chicago

    The Bears that is

  3. BucEmUp Says:

This is common sense just like everything else the bucs can’t fix….stop allowing the other teams to score at will and we CAN run the ball!!!

    Fire Mike Smith!

  4. joestang Says:

you have to have a running back capable of running the ball. Barber is a serviceable back, not a 25-30 carries a game back. Jones is a total bust. What are you trying to develop with this back, either he can run or he can;t. Start him and see what you get.

I think we have seen the best of Barber with this O-line. Now we need to see more of it. I don’t think we will see a lot of yards out of Jones until after mid season. He is a rookie and still seems tentative. I hope we pick late in the first round in 2019 and land a bigger better RB. It has become a passing league and many teams are looking for better blockers than 1000 yd rushers.

Hard to run the ball when you’re down by 35 at the half.

  7. Buccfan37 Says:

Too early to pass harsh judgement on the running game. Working out the kinks will produce a better effort.

Koetter is full of crap and it’s his fault barber has 15 rushes the last 2 games. Stop running 4 backs in a game and allow your offensive line to get used to barber being the main back. I’m so tired of seeing Rodgers in the game and wondering where barber for stretches at a time. This coach has an ancient view of this game and why he mentioned all those old backs. Another head coach that can’t seem to evolve.

  9. Espo Says:

They’re perfectly capable of running but have yet to commit to it. I think this has been obvious since they’re yet to invest in a real fullback.

  10. 813bucboi Says:

interesting thing is that dirk didn’t say he’s committed to running the ball or likes to run the ball…..

he just says we have to run the ball…..

didn’t say we have to run it “X” amount of times…..didn’t say we have to run it effectively…..didn’t say we have to get creative with running the ball…..

he just gave a vague answer that aint telling us nothing new…..

I’ve been harping on this little fact for a while now no run game no playoffs and the run blocking is garbage watch the film there is no denying it think about it the longer the time of possession (with a lead that is) the longer the garbage secondary is off the field giving the d line and linebackers more rest we desperately need that balance on offense because we know that good ole’ Smitty’s defense isn’t going to carry this team it couldn’t stop retired receivers in a nursing home right now

  12. Alanbucsfan Says:

It would help if OLinemen know who they are supposed to block

You guys it’s all Doug Martin’s fault obviously.

He is the reason this team averages the exact same YPC regardless of who is running, and despite the fact that he’s not even on the team.

  15. SOEbuc Says:

Barber is a strong down hill runner that likes to run the ball straight up the middle. Top RG round 2 in 2019 to replace the swimming pool known as Benenoch and we could possibly have a very nice oline.

  16. D the Bucs fan Says:

We haven’t ran well since Dirk was the coordinator here in 2015.

  18. Bucsfanman Says:

unbelievable- Agreed. It’s all Martin’s fault! We should bench him in favor of someone else. Wait, what? He’s no longer on the team?! And we STILL can’t run the ball?!
    Fake news! Truth isn’t truth!

The game is more about fantasy football today.
