Monken “Week-To-Week”

September 14th, 2018

Temporary status.

Just because Bucs offensive coordinator Todd Monken was calling plays last week in New Orleans doesn’t mean he will be calling plays Sunday when the Bucs face the Super Bowl-champion Eagles.

For all he knows, Monken suggested he may be a janitor in the near future.

Of course, all the rage in the Tampa Bay area is how Monken called one of the best offensive performances in franchise history last week. Monken was uncomfortable discussing this yesterday in front of the Tampa Bay pen and mic club, deflecting virtually all credit.

In fact, Monken said he doesn’t know how long he will be the offensive shot-caller.

“Whatever my role is, is a week-to-week thing based on the head coach,” Monken said. “I am appreciative of the opportunity I have had. If [Dirk Koetter] told me tomorrow to coach the receivers or told me to clean up the trash, that’s what I would do.”

The way the offense hummed — have you ever seen Koetter enjoy himself on the sideline as he did last week? — it’s difficult to imagine Koetter demoting Monken on a whim.

That’s how you build a winning “TEAM”. Whatever is needed of you you do it no matter what.

  2. Bobby M. Says:

I think we stole one…..but a win is a win. We played relatively flawless….they had two turnovers. Great QBs like Brees are able to apply so much constant pressure that most teams eventually break…..I think we can steal another win against Philly. Foles is showing why he’s a great back up but not a starter, the Eagles are no longer flying under the radar….They’re missing a few starters, its early in the season and its a road game for them….IMO we’ll see Fitzpatrick come back to earth and the QB controversy will die down these next two games….Fitzpatrick and Foles are very similar in their careers. Flashes of potential but never consistent enough to build a team around.

Real team player monk is. He was called the College guy well he aired it out like one

  4. Bucsfaninchina Says:

Bucs front office is trying really hard to convince the NFL that Monken wont be calling plays from here on out. Smart play, but as we saw last week we know who the brains of the offense is

  5. Michael Brockway Says:

Sad we missed the field goal we wouldn’t be tied for the record we would hold the record…..

  6. Not there yet Says:

We stole one? Did you even watch the game. Saints were a threat for less than 5 minutes of that entire game

  7. BucEmUp Says:

Monk we be gone soon and Smitty will still be here. That’s the buccaneers way!

  8. THETRUTH Says:

You could also say Bucs were a threat the whole game to saints. Don’t take away from a game they flat out won. No breaks were givin

  9. THETRUTH Says:

Get off The Who is calling play story !!

We all know it’s monken , anyone watching knew it was monken , asking kotter who was calling plays is as dumb question as asking who won the game after it was over.

Real question : are you pleased with monken ha does the playing calling today?
This gives you all answers you need

  10. Evolvingbucsfan Says:

Koetter isn’t a coach that let’s his ego get in the way, ……at least I hope not.

Just like the old adage ” If it aint broke….”

    @THETRUTH

If you were really paying attention you would have realized I was saying the same thing to someone else, read before responding and trying to school people that way you know what your talking about

  12. OneBuc55 Says:

Imho no head coach should be calling plays…He should be managing the flow of the game…

It’s too many other things to worry about during the course of a game that require a HC’s attention…He’s equipped with a head set so he can always chime in and give his 2 cents when necessary; allow you assistants do their job…

I know Dirk got the job because of his offensive prowess, but at this point he has bigger fish to fry…Although the sample size is small, I think Monken is a great play caller…and as someone said earlier if ain’t broke, don’t try to fix it…

  13. El_Buc941 Says:

This is more about job security joe.if Dirk starts calling plays again and everyone knows monken is the mastermind we know he could be the next head coach if Dirk is fired.simple as that.he still has memories of how he became HC and knows team glazer isn’t hesitant to replace the main head with a coordinator on his team.

  14. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Think this is a good move by the HC to keep the other team guessing and then imagine how much preparation and analytics will be involved in breakin down 2 OC games and their tendencies that is just more crap the opposing HC & DCs have to think about in their week leading up to playing the bucs, think it is a smart move by koetter not letting the opposition know who will be calling the plays week to week

  15. Kobe Faker Says:

“This is why Kobe is adamant that Klueless Koetter is not Head Coach material. This insecure fool isnt a Head Coach but a a old wishy washy woman. For 2 years he wouldnt hire and use an offensive coordinator and kept our franchise hostage because of his stubborn insecurities.

Be a leader and lead my conviction and steadfastness. State to the team, coaches and the fans that Monken will be the playcaller and how well he has performed. Be humble and lead!

Monken on the other hand has great HC qualities. Humility and the ultimate team player”

“Klueless has personality issues. I bet he is a hoarder”

Owe you apology , I miss read . We agree with the outlook of game

Don’t have to get offensive , people can make mistakes , justvlook at our 2nd round picks past few years.(mistakes)

    Peace

  17. LakeLand Says:

    There’s 15 games to play

A lot will change before week 17

  18. D-Rome Says:

Whatever my role is, is a week-to-week thing based on the head coach

If that is true then this organization is dysfunctional.

    Little confidence.

  19. Evolvingbucsfan Says:

Maybe this is just Bucs propaganda? Maybe thinking the iggles will have to study the way the game is called based on 1 coach vs the other? hmmmm maybe.

  20. Buccfan37 Says:

I wouldn’t be upset if Monken was promoted to head coach. Since when is Koetter qualified for unwavering praise? Big ego, smaller results.

  21. 813bucboi Says:

I say let monken call the offense and defense….he cant do any worse than smitty…..

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!…#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!!…GO BUCS!!!!

  22. Cobraboy Says:

Monken DID “clean up the trash”, metaphorically speaking…

  23. TOM Says:

I was wondering how long it would take before someone mentioning Monken as HC

  24. Jmarkbuc Says:

Koetter really doesn’t want to give anybody else credit..

Since the only reason he got the HC gig was that he was a decent OC, I could see why he could be getting a little twitchy that somebody is doing it better than him.

  25. Reach87 Says:

IMO the HC doesn’t like the question for the same reason he doesn’t like going into detail on things like healthy scratches. Assistant coaches have probably 85 percent influence in both cases, but he makes the final decision. If the scratch or play called was bad and led to a loss, how does that conversation go with fervent fans and media who want someone to pin the blame on? The right answer is it all should come back to him. So if it were me, I fully understand his position. Go the Team route every time…you’ll never have to throw your sssistants under the bus when it goes bad (and it’s gone bad for EVERY team in the NFL at some point, since 1972). Go Bucs!

  26. jmarkbuc Says:

    Plenty of teams have OC’s..so I don’t think it’s a secrecy issue..

If he’s not the one calling the plays why did Chris Myers announce it during the telecast in NO?
