Hoping For Defensive Rebirth

August 9th, 2018

Sad flashback.

Reading the following today, Joe just wanted to throw a remote at his Hollywood, Fla., hotel room door.

Intelligent Evan Silva of Rotoworld.com Twittered out a piece from Rob Demovsky of BSPN on Packers backup Brett Hundley.

Why should this interest Bucs fans? Because it only highlights how awful the Bucs defense was last year.

Demovsky writes just how bad of a quarterback Hundley was last year after starting nine games for injured Aaron Rodgers.

Before Hundley started a game last season, one NFL personnel executive thought the Packers could trade him for a fourth-round pick. After he played, the same scout said Hundley had no trade value.

So what does this have to do with the Bucs, again? Well, that garbage defense last year allowed a quarterback who has zero trade value to ram the ball down the field on them — twice! — late in the game (including overtime) to beat them.

Simply puke-inducing.

And folks instead of putting the blame on last season where it should be, want to run off the best quarterback this team has ever had instead. Insane!

(Oh, and that same maligned Bucs quarterback marched the Bucs on two scoring drives in the fourth quarter to set the table for a Bucs win — just like you’d want your franchise quarterback to do.)

GreenBay had 199 yards rushing and 84 yards passing!!!!!!! 2 rushing TDs and 0 TDs passing!!!!!!!! 1 INT passing ( and of course the Bucs lost the turnover battle)!!!!!!!!!

The “real” fans don’t agree that the “QB” rammed the ball down on them!!!!!!

    Down there for Poker Joe?

  3. Alphabucfan Says:

You hit the nail on the head there joe. There’s players in the hall of fame who have done worse things than Jamie’s an nobody knows the god honest truth about what really happened that night 2 years ago. Great article joe keep em coming.

  4. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

Watch the game again Realist. Hundley ran for a lot of those yards

  5. BucEmUp Says:

When has Mike Smith ever ran a good defense? Not including under del Rio……that was not the same system as he had in Atlanta and has here. If these corners are playing 12 yards off I may owe beef o Brady’s a t.v later tonight

  6. BucEmUp Says:

Realist please don’t act like there isn’t a list of teams who have had their back up qbs embarrass the bucs. Both under lovie and Smitty who are both failures from running the same outdated soft crap scheme.

What’s the excuse going to be when they still suck with all of this talent?
If the corners don’t move up nothing will change

  7. gilhealy Says:

Now that’s real talk. A little D, a little running, presto. I like our chances this season.

  8. jmarkbuc Says:

We will have a defensive rebirth…next year when we have a new DC

  9. orlbucfan Says:

Hope Mike Smith changes my mind this year. Still wary of him. Go Tampa Bay!!!

  10. Ptwalk Says:

@Realist 199 yards rushing to a team that’s only 1 dimensional. That’s still on the coordinator.

The real fans (ie anyone that can see) knows that if we had any defense last year we would have been at least 8-8.

  12. Ghastly Bucs Says:

So if we would have had any defense and a non-turnover machine of a QB, we’d been 11-5? I like that. This may be the year to go to the playoffs.

Regardless of the Winston fan boys here, we still aren’t going to the SB with this team.

  13. BringBucsBack Says:

    The get-right Bucs!

  14. Ndog Says:

See Ghastly what you can’t seem to understand is that a QB that plays with no defense or running game is forced to throw the ball which increases the odds of forced passes and sack fumbles cause the other team knows what’s coming it all goes hand and hand.

  15. Joe Says:

    Down there for Poker Joe?

    Negative.

  16. 1sparkybuc Says:

The second string D-line this year is an upgrade over the first string from last year. The Bucs will win some games just because of this. Vince Lombardi couldn’t win with that D. Coaching is definitely important, but it’s wasted when the players lack the talent and ability to implement it.

  17. Mike Johnson Says:

I’m hoping Smitty will surprise the hell out of us and make a gametime appearance on the sidelines this season!

  18. Yeogib Says:

Don’t forget, Hundley missed a wiiiiiiiiide open receiver in the endzone in that game.

  19. Lord Cornelius Says:

There is no way to spin this as a positive for the defense… They lost the game.

They couldn’t stop a 1 dimensional team that could only run the ball up to that point when it counted.

They gave up like 1/2 of those total passing yards on the 2 drives that they needed stops the most.

When GB got the ball in OT most Bucs fans knew the defense was going to choke that game away.

    Just bad man lol.

    This guy gets it!

The only thing I would add is that play-calling can mitigate some of these deficiencies.
An “average” defense might’ve gotten us 8-8 or better.

  21. 813bucboi Says:

lol…..funny how rhealist never wants to hold his booty partner smitty accountable…..

smitty’s defense sucks and is outdated….instead of making adjustment and getting creative, smitty blames player communication….lol…

smitty has zero excuse not to have a top ten defense….dirk has zero excuse not to have a top ten SCORING offense…..

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!…#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!!…GO BUCS!!!!

  22. Godeep66 Says:

I do recall that we lost the game due to our red zone offense. Nothing to do with our defense

  23. Joe Says:

    Indeed! 🙁

  24. Joe Says:

If the Bucs defense stinks this year (again) and Smitty starts blaming communication (again) Joe’s going to have kittens.

  25. BringBucsBack Says:

Rebirth? When was this defense ever “born”? I thought we were all in agreement that this defense should die a quick death! However, slow and painful is eminent.

  26. Trench War Says:

If I remember correctly GB setup shop and scored on 2 very short drives on Tampa’s side of the field. One on a special teams blocked punt and the other on a Winston sack fumble. Without those two mishaps the Bucs should have defeated GB. We lost the turnover battle in a one score game.

  27. Ghastly Bucs Says:

LOL @Ndog, What ever helps you sleep at night. Keep the excuses coming.

  28. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

Hundley ran for 66 yeards and averaged 9.4 yards per carry against the Bucs. That was the real problem they had with Hundley.

  29. Pickgrin Says:

All those crappy memories about last year’s defensive failures are in the past. Let them go. Its a new year. Hope springs eternal in early August.

Licht brought in FIVE new DL players. All talented. 4 are NFL proven and one is a legit star DE in the league with plenty of tread left on the tires. Also added a mountain of a man to clog up the middle in the 1st rd of the draft who is more athletic than 99.98% of guys his size.

The seemingly woeful secondary will be instantly better with vastly improved play up front – but GM Licht also added 2 second rd CBs and an athletic, versatile safety in the 4th rd to increase the DB talent level with young promising prospects and up the level of competition for the other still young players coming back (Hargreaves, R.Smith, Elliot).

The Defense should be vastly improved in 2018.

If its not, then coach Smitty’s will be the 1st head on the chopping block – and rightfully so.

I will be very surprised if we don’t see a much better Buccaneers defense this year. Having a running game (fingers crossed) should also help out our Defense as would cutting down on stupid turnovers (obviously).

Maybe we can even score some 1st half TDs this year and let the Buccaneer defense play with the lead a few times for a nice change – eh? Let these new Dogs up front HUNT!

    Go Bucs!

  30. D1 Says:

    Trench war,

The fumble by JW was returned 60+ yrs for a TD. If not for that play, there is not a tie at the end of regulation and no o.t. defensive meltdown.

  31. Trench War Says:

    @D1

thanks man, my memory is a little vague but you are right that fumble resulted in a TD for GB. So in actuality, excluding GB’s TD on a short field after the blocked punt our defense only gave up 13 points, and 13 points were scored off turnovers. Us to give up 13 points defensively was not bad but only scoring 20 points offensively was a travesty.

  32. Knoxville Buc Fan Says:

Why you talking about last year again? Damn guys this is almost a totally different defense. I get it your digging for stories from time to time but hell don’t throw the remote dude. There is medicine for your problem. It will be ok
