Could Schedule Panic Affect The Draft?

April 20th, 2018

General manager Jason Licht and his staff are certainly a seasoned NFL Draft crew with an above average report card picking college players.

Licht is a fearless selector eager to take on calculated risk. But he is human.

And Joe is wondering today about the human side of this draft.

One look at the brutal first-half schedule for the Bucs, including opening at the Saints followed by the Eagles and Steelers at home, and it’s easy to ponder whether that might tip a scale or two for Licht come draft night.

The Bucs need a big-impact rookie in a bad, bad way — more than they did last week.

The cold business reality of the NFL says Team Glazer might start thinking about their next general manager if the Bucs are 3-5 at halftime of the season. Fair or not, that’s the way it is whether Joe writes about it or not.

Sitting at No. 7 overall in the draft, the Bucs are obviously in excellent position to pick a player with great potential. But might the tought schedule nudge Licht into considering a trade up for one of the projected true-impact studs, Saquon Barkley and Bradley Chubb?

Or could the schedule push Licht to stand firm, resist trading down and collecting more picks in favor of drafting a cornerback at No. 7 that he believes can actually play the position effectively from Day 1?

Joe’s only concern is the Bucs’ long-term health and an eventual Super Bowl victory. Joe doesn’t care about urgency attached to this year’s schedule, so Joe is all for long-term thinking.

But that mindset could be in jeopardy, at least a little bit, in the Bucs’ front office.

$20 all-you-can-eat buffet kicks off at 6 p.m. and runs all night long. Be there!!

No Thursday night games is actually a plus in my opinion. But getting effed with 1pm games from week 6-17 SURE SAYS EVERYTHING. Doesn’t get any worse than those. And what happens…to the NFL front office and scheduler if the Bucs do trade, and/or obtain Saquon…then where will they’re scheduling BE?!?! You think the NFL is okay with Saquon not on national broadcasts??! Think about it.

***If we end up best case 2-2 at the Bye, that would be a huge win. 1-3 seems likely, without SAQUON.***

    Go Bucs!

    Hmmm…..:)

  15. UNOME18 Says:

We did read Joe!!! I don’t understand your logic. We all knew we had to play the Saints twice EVERYEAR, and we also knew we would be playing the NFC East. Why Are you making a mountain out of a mole hill. Please JUST STOP!!who cares what you THINK our record MIGHT be half way thru the season, lets just see what our record is at the END of the season.. Man Joe your just making noise…Beside what better way to open your home season with the superbowl champs! Just imagine the confidence our players will have if they beat the Eagles. Lets go Bucs!!! Also, true or not if the Glazers think of replacing our GM because we are 3-5 halfway thru the season, then it speaks VOLUMES of our ignorant our ownership is fair or not fair that’s our UNOME18 writes it…

  16. hoover923 Says:

You don’t draft with a short term view. You just don’t worry about the schedule when you draft. I’ve never heard any GM say such a thing. You have to pick the player that hits the best combination of need/value for your team. You’re building for the long haul with the draft, not concerning yourself with the first 8 games of a rookie year. The premise of the article is ludicrous.

  17. Joe Says:

You don’t draft with a short term view.

If the powers that be at One Buc Palace don’t start doing just that, they very easily could be groveling for work come January.

Does anyone realistically believe the shot-callers at One Buc Palace have sufficient job security to withstand another losing season?

This teams needs wins now, not 2022.

  18. Frank Pillow Says:

Here’s the good news- if you listened to Licht’s presser, it’s clear that he has done some substantial contingency planning and that he knows what he’ll move up, down or stand pat for. Are those opportunity costs and his risk appetite the same as yours and mine? I don’t know, but I have to believe he and Dirk expected to get canned last year and that their jobs are on the line here. URGENCY should be the theme for the draft and the season- the time score big in the draft and win is now or someone else will be making the decisions. Jason comes across as a guy who solidly sees the big-picture and maybe that’s the mindset: that at 7 or wherever, the aim is to improve the roster for week 1, week 10 and beyond.

  19. StPeteBucsFan Says:

A DB? Are you kidding me. There are no true “shut down” corners in this draft.
No generational corners to be had. No Patrick Petersens so just forget about it.

Chubb is not a generational player but his position and talent make his a good pick at 7…if he was available…DE’s historically…in fact DL’s are not usually first year stars. Check out Warren Sapp’s stats…first year 3 sacks…he tripled that number in his second year.

Quentin Nelson could probably contribute heavily in year one and he is one of only two players I keep seeing mentioned over and over again as generational at his position.

Barkley is the other and of course he is the player who could make the biggest impact from the get go.

If they’re worrying about their jobs…Barkley is looking good right now.
I certainly concede if they get Nelson and then Guice they’ll have an effective running game in ’18. I’m happy with either result but it would be fun to watch Barkley leaving DB’s in his wake as he…could…go…all…the…way.

  20. Tampabaybucfan Says:

We have cap problems moving forward….we need all of our draft picks and could use a few more.
We need drafted players to average out the salary of our more expensive veterans…
I seriously doubt the Glazers will permit a mortgaging of our future to obtain a RB or DE because of a September schedule….

And, who says we can’t win those games?……likely, no….possible hell yes!!!

  21. Gambelero Says:

So, we think false optimism annually affects Bucland, only? ESPN just released its most stupid thing ever. Their predicted records leave the league an incredible 61 wins above average. For the math challenged. The league has to end up 50-50 even-Steven, every year. You can’t have 61 teams winning a game against air.

They really earned their moniker BSPN with that one.

  22. blind melon Says:

Schedule is unchanged from months ago. Draft for the team, not the schedule in my head. That series of games could have ended up at any point in the season.

(I do like we are only playing one team off a bye (49ers) and we’re at home.

Iron sharpens Iron. They need to prove it to themselves early with momentum.

If Licht wants to move up, down or stick there those scenarios are worn out. Now just let it come to him, I project at least one more team will want to move into the top 10 for a QB and that position isn’t very well stocked in the next couple of years.

  23. lambchop Says:

We have some solid veterans on this team. I have a feeling the team will be nothing like last year’s team. Let’s get some attitude on the Bucs. We can’t play scared. Eff the record after the first 4 games. We’re not a SB contender so let’s just see the guys get their act together and play hard. Every game has to be a grind. If we lose, we can’t fold and hand it to em. Make em earn it. I want to see at least a 9-7 season. Even if we miss the playoffs, it will answer a heck of a lot of questions about this team going forward.

I am actually digging a Derwin James draft pick now just cuz of the swag he’d bring to the team. Or even a Nelson, Guice, or Will Hernandez draft. Some dirty smash mouth player(s) to change the culture of soft play. It doesn’t have to be a sexy pick. We need some more blue collar players on this team to get ugly, dirty, and cocky.

@Eric… “1st Panzer division is coming over the hill and people say don’t worry.” Awesome Eric! Great visual.

Joe, long-term views, short-term views are irrelevant when you have multiple starting holes to fill like the Bucs do. Move up to draft Barkley but don’t ‘fix the OLine’ because of lack of picks & Barkley won’t fare any better than Martin did last year (right now we’ve only got THREE OLinemen we can count on). Don’t fix the Secondary & opposing OCs will have a field day exploiting our weaknesses there (offensive strategies really aren’t THAT tough … capitalize on your own STRENGTHS and exploit your adversary’s WEAKNESSES seems to work pretty well).

So much can and probably will happen between now and our opening day game with New Orleans. We have the draft, UDFA choices, OTA’s, training camp, pre-season and more. Our schedule is nothing but spit in the wind compared to the tasks we have improving the Buc’s before the 2018 season. I think many of us are consumed with draft panic and therefore are using the first three games as a place to go to divert our anxiety. If we practice hard, choose well, stay relatively injury free and focus on a day at a time, I’m confident NO will have it’s hands full.

I just don’t accept the premise that you could count on a draft making a huge difference in the first 8 games. And no GM, I’d be willing to bet, EVER has drafted a guy with a focus as short as that. I mean, Barkley is about the only player in this draft that you could count on to win games right away for you…

Outside of the small handful of playmakers, every draft pick comes with hopes of short term impact, but more realistic expectations of long term high level play. Maybe the premise of the article means we wouldn’t spend a pick on Davenport, since he’s a project. Maybe. I don’t think they’ll draft Davenport for a few other reasons, even if they trade back.

Drafting by its nature isn’t a short-term project. It just isn’t, unless it means you never draft “project” players or small school players. Maybe you should only draft players from the major conferences. I don’t know, but no GM wants to be handcuffed that way.

A general manager’s job is to balance the short term with the long term view on personnel. I doubt the tough schedule up front has ANY impact on Jason Licht’s thinking going into the draft. I doubt it would affect ANY GM’s draft. Drafting talent is hard enough anyway. Adding in an expectation of immediate impact just lowers your chance of successful drafting. Just pick the players that you think have the best chance of being good NFL players. Period.

@813bucboi … “imo, licht has done enough to stay…..he doesn’t coach……the coaches are making some of his picks look bad…..if the losing starts, don’t look at licht, look at dirk and smitty.” Horsepuckey 813. The players who look bad REALLY ARE BAD. Baker stunk it up last year … that’s not on Smitty, that’s on Licht. Noah Spence has a great heart, but fragile body for a DE … that’s not on Smitty either. VHIII ‘might’ turn it around to become a decent outside CB, but he hasn’t shown much from Day 1 IMO. That’s on the one who drafted him (although Joe obviously disagrees). Ryan Smith spending his 1st year at Safety was on Licht also (he’s the one who drafted him to be a SAFETY) … Ryan ‘might’ come on this year, but he was essentially a rookie outside corner last year.

Could go on with other under-performing starters like Gholston & TJ Ward but I think you see where this is going. The 2016 & 2017 defenses played well above their talent level IMO … 19 of 32 games played in those 2 years were decided by less than 7 pts. Came in 32nd last year in yards allowed AND couldn’t hold several 4th qtr leads, but they did better than any of us have a right to expect (given the poor infusion of high-rnd talent) in terms of scoring defense (#15 in 2016 and #22 in 2017). Last I looked, team that gives up the least points wins. Better talent is what the Bucs need on defense. DLine got some of that this year, but it’ll be irrelevant if we don’t fix the Secondary too.

Its funny how most people think that season is over already and not one snap has been played. Even when the good ol’ Cremesickle Orange Bucco Bruce and the the merry winking pirate years, we still had some sort of hope. Every team made adjustments this year. Every team had a loss/gain of player(s). Theres still plenty of time for practices. Until they (the players) start looking like $4!t dont say the season is a wash already. Have some sort of faith in this team and dont be a bandwagoneer when we do win these tough games this year.

  42. I Bleed Pewter and Red Says:

I’m gonna resist the temptation to get all fuzzy inside. Been there done that. After we start 1-3, I will have conditioned myself by then to accept what seemed inevitable from the start whereas some of you rah rah guys will be the first to have a stroke, and want to bring out torches and pitchforks by midseason. I’m not suggesting you don’t root for their success, I’m just saying don’t set yourself up for disappointment. I’d rather be surprised than let down again for the 500th time. Say what you want about my fandom but the Buccaneers have been my team since their inception. My skin is thick but my heart is vulnerable.

Either we have a team we feel can win or we don’t, and we need to build with winning in the next couple years in mind.

The concise answer, in lieu of the longer one above, is NO, absolutely not. Schedule panic does not exist except on JBF… The front office is not going to let the schedule affect the draft, period. If they’re panicking, they have no business in those jobs. If Licht were the kind to panic over the schedule, he would not have made his way up the ranks to a GM position.

  62. 813bucboi Says:

    DEFENSE

the coaches are suppose to hold players accountable….if the coaches let baker run the lockerroom, thats on them not licht…….baker was a decent player before he came to tampa…..so what happened?…..licht screwed him up…..BS….the coaches said they needed DT help so licht went out and got some…..

somebody(smitty or the DB coach) had to tell licht they would be able to convert ryan smith to safety…..to doubt licht view all of smith college tape where it showed him playing as a man press cb and thought he would be a better safety than CB…..and if the coaches failed to convert him, which in term stunted his growth, then that’s on the coaches…..not licht……

again, with VHG, the coaches are putting him in position to fail by forcing him to play in a scheme that isn’t suited for him…..that’s on coaches not licht…..

at the time, spence was regarded as the best pure pass rusher in the draft……we needed pass rush so licht got 1…..the coaches are responsible for putting him in position to succeed….they are in charge of knowing how to use him…..not licht……

gholston was here before licht so I don’t know what your talking about there…..he was picked by schiano…..

tj ward stated that the defensive scheme was trash….that’s on the staff not licht…..

I could go on and on too…..

sweezy and Roberto were bad signing i’ll admit that but the rest are on the staff…..

we said we needed weapons for Winston and he got the…..we said we needed pass rush and dline depth and he’s gotten them…..he has drafted well…..

you have to hold the offensive and defensive guru’s accountable…..we cant score and we cant stop anyone……but some how that’s on licht?…..BS……

This is weird. The Bucs already knew the 16 teams they were facing months ago. The order is irrelevant. I could make arguments that they might get to face the Eagles without Wentz (possible PUP) and they get the Steelers at home (Steelers are much better at home than on the road). They always play the Saints in New Orleans – so big deal. And they get an early bye to course correct any early issues.

Last game of last season we beat the Aints, the Steelers are just a name and have no talent at CB/LB to go to to toe with Jackson,Evans, and Howard, and the eagles have only acquired Bennet who’s over the hill and will most likely flush Jameis Winston out and force to throw on the run and out the pick in which he is 1 of 2 of the leagues best QBs when in that situation. 68. Not there yet Says:

Yes that makes perfect sense. The media and local news are in complete panic over the first 4 games of the season so Licht is going to completely change his draft strategy lol meaning he won’t go after a kicker this year. Bucs likely don’t have the toughest schedule in the NFL but it’s up there which I think is also helpful in tie breaker towards the end of the season.

If you want to be a playoff team or be taken serious you have to play these teams it’s not that serious but media is going to keep dramatizing this issue. No wonder your draft and free agent advice is so bad you guys think scared. I doubt Licht is worried about his job, he said as much yesterday. You can’t draft for 2018 you have to think ahead

  69. Ed Says:

I like the schedule because it will force a more urgent training camp and preseason this team knows they are going to be playing well coached teams early in the year so they also must be well coached and well prepared no more Soft training camps to preserve bodies. Give Winston lots of reps in preseason to improve his timing and accuracy. Let’s get physical as the song went. Koetter has to put more urgency and demand more out of their starters. There is no future for this team it’s win now

Quenton Nelson is no doubt the surest pick of top 10 and if he’s there at #7, he needs to be added to this team. He will change this oline immideatly compared to the risk of DE Chubb and RB Barkley. If he’s not at #7 than they need to focus on getting Hernandez or Wynn in the second. And trading up??? Did you people fall off your bar stools??? You do realize we don’t have a third round pick at the moment right???

  75. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    DB55

LDE Noah Spence | Will Clarke
RDT David Irving | Mitch Unrein
LDT Gerald McCoy | Vinny Curry | William Gholston
    LDE Jason Pierre-Paul| David Irving

That Line-Up would destroy opppnents on passing downs.

    TRADING DOWN = PREFERRED

STANDING PAT AND TAKING SAQUON, NELSON OR CHUBB = HAPPY TIME

    TRADING UP = FIREABLE OFFENSE

Bruh we may be able to compete for the division with that line up. But wtfdwk amirite

  78. WyomingBucsFan Says:

Trade Lavante David to move up 2 spots. The guy is a good player but he gets blocked out of the play way to easily. Draft Saquon Barkley and have your running game for then next 6 years!

  79. QBKilla Says:

Agree with NFLNut, get one of the big 3 or trade down. We have 8-10 holes to fill.

  80. SB Says:

Happy 420 to you too Hoover………And you too DB my bro!

Wyoming………Sorry bro but that wins the ‘worst take of the day’ post.

  82. Defense Rules Says:

@813bucboi … “licht screwed him up…..BS.” Not what I said 813. Regarding Baker: “Baker stunk it up last year … that’s not on Smitty, that’s on Licht.” Baker should never have been signed … period.

@813bucboi … “I could go on and on too.” Blaming the coaches for Spence’s injuries because they supposedly didn’t know how to use him? Really? Blaming the coaches for Ryan Smith’s failed time as a Safety because “if the coaches failed to convert him” then that “stunted his growth”? He was a 4th Rnd pick selected by Licht to be a SAFETY … no evidence I’ve ever seen that the coaches put Licht up to that (that’s why he has a scouting staff). And blaming the defensive coaches & Smitty for screwing up VHIII is almost humorous (‘course, Joe loves it). VHIII was in no way a good 1st Rnd pick, and although he might recover this year, he surely didn’t show much playing outside last year.

Yes Gholston was here before Licht, but Smitty didn’t re-sign him last year. I have no idea what went on last year, but Will’s play went downhill big-time. And stating that “tj ward stated that the defensive scheme was trash” is even more humorous … Ward was a whiny baby whose skills had evaporated but who expected to start for the Bucs without even being here in training camp or knowing what the defense was trying to do. Not hardly the player I’d be referencing in Licht’s defense (should never have been signed).

In Licht’s defense, he has redeemed himself somewhat in the past month or so with Allen, Curry & JPP signings, but HUGE holes remain and our depth is pretty shallow. Thankfully the draft is ahead …

@SB and DB Happy 420 guys. It’s Friday night and if the feelings right….:-)

  84. BucEmUp Says:

I really don’t want Barkley, not.impressed as most. I personally like Sony Michel of all the backs. Hopefully they can trade djax to someone to regain that third round pick

  85. SB Says:

You too SPBF! This is the flavor of the night for me.

  90. Rod Munch Says:

If you draft for week 2 of season 1 in the draft then you’re going to fail at your job.

  91. Rod Munch Says:

On thing on the schedule I just noticed, and I’m sure someone said this already so I’m not claiming it’s a big revelation, but the Bucs only play one game that isn’t at 1pm ET. I don’t think I’ve ever seen that before, 15 games all at 1pm ET, no west coast games, no 4pm starts, just one MNF game and then every week at 1pm.

  92. Pistol Pete Says:

” Team Glazer might start thinking about their next general manager if the Bucs are 3-5 at halftime of the season.”

Let’s hope they had those thoughts last season when we had 4 WINS until the final play of game 16.

Worst ranked Defense, change a position coach….some of these moves are amateur at best.

If they were truly “cut throat” we would have seen a new GM, likely a new DC and more.

  93. BetterBuccinBelieveIt Says:

    @WyomingBucsFan…..

Pay NO nevermind to the @SB stooge and his noise. He’s far from a sage of wisdom here, and all JBF posters can speak their mind here, as long as technically they don’t put the site in legal jeopardy. @Joe will have varying things to say on that at varying times, but its the baseline.

BTW…the city/town of Jackson is easily the most gorgeous place on this planet. I’ve vacationed there 3 times and it is unspeakably gorgeous.

I happen to also agree with your opinion on Barkley, and all thorough rave reviews of him here will fall on deaf ears, so don’t give that much thought.

    Go Bucs!
