Questionable Timing; Jon Gruden Staging Rare Media Session At MacDill Air Force Base

December 8th, 2017

Disrespecting Dirk Koetter

Later this morning, JoeBucsFan.com columnist Ira Kaufman and a few other select media members will be chatting with Jon Gruden, aka Chucky, on the grounds of MacDill Air Force Base.

How bout that timing!!

Chucky knows very well Dirk Koetter is under heavy fire for his underachieving 4-8 record. Chucky also knows he is rumored to be the next head coach of the Buccaneers in four short weeks. Heck, Chucky himself fueled those rumors and has done nothing to quash them.

Call Joe a cynical bastard, but today’s Gruden showcase reeks.

It’s great cover for trying to fan the fire under Koetter, and gaining whatever benefits Chucky believes that will bring his way. What better way to showcase yourself as a community-first man of Tampa for your potential new employer than to mingle with the local Air Force servicemen, where the Bucs have great support — and offer great support?

Who other than Joe would call out a trip to MacDill, where Chucky will lead a football practice of servicemen?

(Yes, Joe admires and respects the military. The fathers of both Joes were servicemen.)

Chucky claims to respect his fellow coaches, including Koetter, who graciously hosted him at training camp. Koetter had Chucky in his office for 90 minutes to talk ball during training camp this year, in addition to letting him address the team.

Is this photo op respectful of Koetter, given the state of the Bucs? No. Joe believes this is clearly Chucky running around Koetter’s backyard operating in ways that inevitably fuel the fire under the Bucs’ head coach.

And Joe thinks that sucks.

The Monday Night Football crew is in Miami next week. Chucky could have done the same thing at the Naval station in Key West, for example. There’s a lot of ways for Chucky to do community service without doing to Koetter what he woudn’t want done to himself.

  1. AlteredEgo Says:

bwahahahaha….seriously….Chuckie is very popular …perfectly normal to make an appearance @ MacDill in his hometown

  2. Jeffbuc Says:

Yes I love it. Kind of like what koetter did to lovie

  3. Bird Says:

    Dddddaaaaannnnnnnnngggggggg!

  4. Bird Says:

I think he will want to keep licht to be honest with you

  5. Son of Kobe Faker Says:

“I think you are reaching here”

    Son of Kobe Faker

  6. Bird Says:

I’m a koetter fan but pretty sure he is dead man walking

Especially if Detroit beats us without Matthew stafford.

  7. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Talk about blowing something out of proportion. This explains it right here:

“…where Chucky will lead a football practice of servicemen…”

It is for the troops. Gruden lives in Tampa. Why wouldn’t he do something for the troops?

  8. MTM Says:

Bogus rumor. Chuckie wants another raise. Sorry Chuckie it isn’t happening. ESPN is sinking like the Titanic.

  9. Season Is Over Says:

No bias here in this article. Dirk “We were done by Halloween” Koetter must be on your good side. Don’t worry, I don’t think Chucky will revoke the press passes. I say let whatever is best for the team to happen. Koetter has had three years to prove his worth. The offense still can’t even be consistent.

  10. AlteredEgo Says:

Gruden has not lost a game in years…..he will not put that record at risk of reality

  11. Mike Johnson Says:

Whats the Big Deal? Doesn’t Chucky live in the Tampa Bay area? Its home for him right? Koetters got a hellava lot more to worry about than Gruden. He’d better be worried about the Punishing Ariel Assault his team is about to painfully experience from Detroit. And Koetter need to be in these last 4 games to keep his job. One big blowout and I think the Glazers sent him..to catch one of those Jets out of McDill permanently!

  12. Nate Says:

graciously hosted him gimme a break…..you really dislike that man smh lol

his name will be in the ring and he WON you a superbowl……….

take away the offense and players brought in it woulda never of happened

  13. C eh N eh D eh Says:

If this team goes back to Chucky, we are looking at a further 10 years of misery…He failed in developing young players, spent money on washed up free agents and is a big reason the team is in the mess they are now…One glorious year winning with Dungy’s boys and then came a dismantling of all the things Dungy, and McKay, did to create a sustainable contender…Is he a coach players will want to play for? I doubt it and that kills signing any top free agents. He was bigger than the team when he was fired, it was all about him…

  14. BucThis Says:

    2 words, F^$K Koetter.
Heres 2 more : FIRE KOETTER

  15. Erik w/ Clean Athletics Says:

Koetter has made his own bed, and if he doesn’t have job security, it’s his own darn fault.

His offense is terrible and his stick is very small after these 12 games.

Oh, yeah, and the other side of the ball sucks too.

  16. Eric Says:

Oh please, the man is participating to help the troops. The horror. Like its his fault the team sucks….AGAIN.

The media Chuckie bias in this town is insane.

  17. BigMacAttack Says:

Chucky’s gonna chuck. And no one cares about your feelings, Dirk.
    Sign him up.

  18. Erik w/ Clean Athletics Says:

    Oh, for u Gruden deniers.

The fact that Gruden ‘won with Dungy’s players’ is case-and-point that he was a better coach than Dungy.

  19. AlteredEgo Says:

I guessing the locker room is as divided as the joint….LOL…

  20. Warrenfb12 Says:

What if he is setting it up to back off (even if he really is interested)

  21. Vic Says:

Love and respect Chucky, but I agree with Joe here. Bad timing in your hometown.

And I don’t forget that Gruden underachieved after the Super Bowl. Cold reality, folks. And does anyone think he’ll be able to put together a defensive coaching staff?

  22. C eh N eh D eh Says:

    @Erik w/ Clean Athletics…
Baloney to that…Dungy and McKay built the team. Chucky kicked them in the arse when they needed it and found some offensive additions to put them over the top…Dungy won a Super Bowl and probably given more time would have got there with the Bucs, making the playoffs every year isn’t a bad thing..Drafts were horrible with Chucky and Allen at the helm.

  23. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I don’t attribute any nefarious motives from Gruden….he lives in Tampa….Tampa loves troops & Chucky loves football…..

Also, I think it is slightly premature for Chucky to have an ironclad offer from the Glazers….it won’t happen but what if Koetter wins out including victories over the Falcons, Panthers & Saints? Then where would they be?

Gruden may be on the top of their list and the Bucs may be on the top of Gruden’s list…..

Gruden wins either way…..he’s doing something good where he lives.

  24. Mike Johnson Says:

Hire DUNGY. He could be no worse than pressbox Smitty for our Defense. matter of fact, he’s a step up!!

  25. Son of Kobe Faker Says:

people here forget that Gruden built the oakland raiders team that we played against in the superbowl

the man was involved in building the the top 2 franchises during those years

  26. Howard Cosell Says:

    No worries , Joe.
Chucky will never work for the Glazers again.

The Definition of Insanity: doing the same thing over again and expecting different results.

    Chucky is pretty sane.

  27. C eh N eh D eh Says:

and Oakland thrived without Gruden, making the Super Bowl after he left…Dungy deserves to come back to Tampa more than Chucky…We might have a Defense again at the very least…

  28. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

If they fire Koetter, I’m going to have to rethink my fandom of this team.

But…IF they do fire him, what makes everyone think the Glazers are eying Gruden as the replacement?

If I recall, Rex Ryan was hanging out during the off season as well.

  29. Son of Kobe Faker Says:

U lost all cred with that dungy dung

dungy never won without Gruden and Manning

Peyton Manning should have won 2 more superbowls if it wasnt for Dungy

great man but he will be run over the new NFL players now

    “Dungy was a front”

    Bill Polian

  30. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    C eh N eh D eh Says
“and Oakland thrived without Gruden, making the Super Bowl after he left”

That’s you not knowing your stuff right there.

The Raiders did well the following year because they kept the system Jon put into place, along with the players.

Why else do you think we beat them so soundly in the Superbowl? Jon Gruden told his defense the terminology the Raiders were using. Bucs defense back then even said they knew every play that the Raiders would run.

  31. chargedcbh Says:

So What!!!!!! This wouldn’t be an issue if we were 8 and 4 fighting to win the Division.

  32. BUC MAN Says:

HE’S NOT DISRESPECTING KOETTER, THIS IS HIS HOME TOWN AND HE LIVES HERE…….PLAIN AND SIMPLE…….

  33. Season Is Over Says:

Why haven’t the owners come out and given their respect/confidence in Dirk “We were done by Halloween” Koetter? Surely they could put everything to rest if they wanted.

  34. denjoe Says:

Lets do a hit piece on Chucky, you got that picture where he looks mean?
LMAO this like National enquirer crap!

  35. JonBuc Says:

    Conspiracy theory…

  36. Max Says:

If the bucs lose out, Koetter is fired. If we win one game, I think they stick with him. It’s insane to keep firing coaches every 2 years, that’s how you end up like the Browns.

  37. unbelievable Says:

JeffBuc you must be kind of slow.

In what way did Koetter do this to Lovie?

  38. SKBucsfan Says:

I am less concerned about firing Dirk than getting rid of Licht. The Bucs can find a good Offensive Coordinator. Continuity in the coaching staff can be a good thing. What they can’t do is continue to let Licht draft for the them. His bonehead decisions have gotten the team into this mess.

  39. AceofAerospace Says:

Soooo, Gruden might (or might not) be auditioning for a job he loved to replace a guy who currently sucks at it? GOOD!

  40. Lakeland Says:

This is only local news, no one outside of Tampa cares about the Bucs. They are not relevant!

  41. darin Says:

Exactly, if he was taking care of business he would have nothing to worry about. Instead he is busy being a lousy head coach. I cant stand koetter anymore, guy is clueless. I’m also not a fan of gruden coming back. N jon lives here so dont think this is a big deal at all. Lets hire one of the pats coordinators as the new head coach. We need someone who can actually game plan for specific opponents and make in game adjustments. Also someone who knows basic math and when to call timeouts and challenege etc etc etc. Fire dirk yesterday!!

  42. lightningbuc Says:

Seriously Joe? If Father Dungy were doing this, you’d think it was awesome. Hardly. –Joe

  43. HowToSpellRhonde Says:

It sure seems the Joe’s know where Koetter puts his stick at night more than the rest of us.

  44. OAR Says:

And …The Vietnam War was fought over a bet that Howard Hughes lost to Aristotle Onassis.
Ha now Gruden has control over when the military can schedule events?

  45. SOEbuc Says:

Don’t know if this means anything about taking Koetter’s job, but he’s a much better experienced, winning coach (like a Super Bowl) than Dirk, so I don’t know why so many hate the idea of bringing him back. And him being on MNF for all these years he has learned how the games have changed and how every team plays and has changed.

  46. Me? Says:

I’m always amused by what the Joes consider “interesting”. There will be a legit story or controversy that Steve will actually say he doesn’t care about and it doesn’t interest him. But then he’ll write an article about a suspect pause in Dirk’s press conference that “obviously” means something. Lol they read so much into so little. Don’t recall writing about a suspect pause in a news conference. Assuming you’re just joking there.–Joe But I keep coming back-love Steve’s podcast, the scuttlebucs and especially Ira, I’ll keep rolling my eyes sometimes, but I’m always listening lol

  47. Smokingjoebucfan Says:

Joe I guess it’s safe to say now that you won’t be having any cold ones w/Chucky and the boys down at the local Hooters with you calling the Bucs next winning coach out like this

  48. Nate Says:

Gruden underachieved due to not having a defensive OC like he had in monty

the D broke down his last year not the offense

some of yall praise this coach for 9-7 with the last 3yrs avg scoring under 20pts from his play calling regardless if he was a HC for 2 of em and OC for one

But Chucky was fired after TWO 9-7 seasons and made the playoffs twice after having to rebuild a defense

Its deeper than a record sometimes….like 20pts for 3 yrs!!!!!

this will make 4 years for you koetter fans

  49. Nate Says:

    defensive coordinator /DC* typo

  50. Nate Says:

and not having a QB…..he admitted his mistake for not drafting arron Rodgers

it was a old qb league then ..so he got scared and admitted ….favre, mcnabs peyton and what not….

not many up and comers…..coming out blazing then

he has a QB now but I’m still drafting baker for insurance ….and let the best one win….I hope its jameis

but that will force his W eatin @ss to play good

  51. Pickgrin Says:

    Fake News.
Gruden lives in Tampa. Hosts a QB camp for service members at his hometown military base.
Local media shows up for this whether the Bucs are 4-8 or 8-4.
How is this disrespectful to coach Koetter???
Sounds nice, but media just doesn’t just show up and walk onto an Air Force Base.–Joe

  52. America's Groper Says:

I like Dungy, but some of you are are giving him credit where credit isn’t due. Sam Wyche drafted Sapp and Brooks, so it wasn’t necessarily Dungy’s team

  53. AlteredEgo Says:

“great man but he will be run over the new NFL players now”
the NFL players of today …is at the bottom of all woes…league wide…they are their own worst enemy and don’t even understand it…flaunting their 15 minutes of fame at the expense of the proverbial Golden Goose…if Belichek didn’t have Brady he’s be in the same boat…..very few HC’s can get these modern spoiled football players to play…

  54. Waterboy Says:

Does he normally still do charity events down in Tampa or is this really a “rare” occurrence?

I may be in the minority but I’m just not high on Chucky. I think he’s a great X’s and O’s guy but his ego is too big to allow him to just focus on that. He is a total control freak and horrible at talent evaluation.

  55. Jeffbuc Says:

    Unbelievable
He went on a get his name out there tour for other jobs. Made the bucs brass think they had to hire him as head coach or lose him. You know doing like Gruden is doing gettong his name out there doing media in koetters back yard. But maybe I am just slow

  56. Pickgrin Says:

Also – This Gruden at MacDill event was likely planned months ago – before the Bucs ever won or lost a game in 2017. I don’t know that for sure – but it seems illogical that an on-base event like this would have been thrown together in a short time frame. The military doesn’t usually work that way.

  57. ClwJB Says:

Don’t agree at all on this take of the event…the Gruden’s have been in Tampa wayyyyyyyy longer thank Dirk, heck they went to Chamberlain High School here

He is a Tampa resident and is a celebrity – let’s not make more of it than it is…

  58. Tony from Los Angeles Says:

This article is lacking in perspective.
Chucky does a ton of things around the tampa area all the time.
He does not have to become a hermit just because Koetter can’t get his team to win.

The only blame for Koetter being on the hot seat rests squarely on Koetter’s shoulders. At 4-8, he brought this on himself. And commenters, let’s not even remotely talk about injuries, or whatever other excuses people bring up… are the Bucs the only team in the NFL to have injuries? Seems the team that just beat them was dealing with a far worse QB injury than the Bucs.

Gruden doesn’t owe anything to Koetter… and if I remember correctly as depicted on Hard Knocks, Koetter rolled his eyes a bit at Gruden after he left and then said, “Think that guy doesn’t miss coaching.”

    Pretty interesting choice of words.

  59. Lamarcus Says:

Why would gruden come for koetter rescue when the gm, owners don’t. Until the gm and owners come out and say “we got koetter back” then this is an issue. Otherwise Gruden is a just a person like any other else.

Buttttt. I hate the gruden coming back talk.

Exactly right Nate! Couldn’t agree with you more! I don’t understand Joe’s dislike for Jon when he’s the ONLY coach to take us to the promise land and bring home a championship. Meanwhile Joe has his head so far up Koetter’s ass, he can count his fillings from the inside. I love this for both reasons. If Jon’s doing it because he loves our military and he lives in the community, then BRAVO sir! I come from a military family and it makes me admire him even more. If he’s doing it to fan the fires of Koetter being sh$t canned, then wonderful as well. Koetter is a great coordinator, but a tool of a head coach. I don’t care about Koetter or this coaching staff.
    OUTF@$KINGSTANDING!!!!

  61. AlteredEgo Says:

4 more chances to win football games

  62. DBS Says:

He is not going to come back here . Get over it. You really think he would knowing the Glazers would pull the strinig if he had a bad record in 2 years?

  63. DaTruth Says:

Oh please….why should Gruden have any loyalty to Koetter?? If Koetter could actually win some games, maybe he wouldn’t have to worry and someone else coming for his job. I cant wait until black Monday to see this current regime blown out.

  64. ben Says:

joe … geez , Gruden owes bucs head coach nothing.. Gruden lives in Tampa and this event could not have be planned yesterday .

He is not going to come back here . Get over it. You really think he would knowing the Glazers would pull the strinig if he had a bad record in 2 years?

You really think Jon’s that dumb? You don’t think he wouldn’t have a clause in his contract preventing them from screwing him again? Jon wants to coach again and Jon would love to coach Capt. Crab legs. I also believe the Glazers know they’ve completely screwed up with EVERY hire that they’ve done since firing Jon and that the last time they’ve had success was because of Jon. And yes success to me equals winning a championship or getting close. NONE of the coaches that have been brought in here after Jon have had success, and going 10-6 and not making the playoffs IS NOT success! I don’t care what any of you goobers out there say. I just don’t get the animosity towards the ONLY coach to bring us a championship.

  66. Ed Kerber Says:

Two best coaches in Tampa Bayhistory wee Jon Grudenand Tony Dungy. Both have had successful careers with a team other than the Bucs. For Dungy it was after, for Gruden it was before. The key for both was the ability to recruit and identify assistant coaches with talent. Koetter has no one who sets the world on fire. I wanted Mike Zimmer to be the choice over Lovie a few years ago. Koetter has had his shot. His offense is terrible. Tony Dungy had a boring offense. But Tony Dungy also had less than perfect offensive players. Gruden was able to attract some key upgrades and a Super Boel happened. I would take either of them back. Koetter is the mechanic that can’t get the Ferrari to start. He got it to turn over once or twice. But it stalls. Time to get a new mechanic. Not yet time to get a new car.

  67. Kansas95Buc Says:

Given the fact the Gruden has been covering all 32 teams for some years now, like SOE said, he has vast knowledge of how the game is being played now. The man knows how to work an offense. If he can get the most out of our unit then im all for the hire, just get that man a good DC

this firing coaches every 2yrs argument is vey ignorant and pointless

especially since the glazers tried to hire chucky before they called lovie…

and to the dungys team people …..as respect is given dungys teams (w/ the bucs and not peyton manning) had NO OFFENSE…..that cost you two playoff games

Gruden brought the offense and gave you two playoff appearances too in his time here…with chris simms no less… and one loss was to the ny superbowl giants

his only mistake and one he admitted was not drafting aaron Rodgers which 25 teams didn’t either and there is only 5 elite qbs out if 32…

give him a D with brooks as the GM for the defense and lets go…..draft baker to push jameis if not win the job…..ALL lineman both sides …..bring back the creamsickles new pirate logo glazers

A 4-8 record with the most talented team we’ve had in years? Dirk deserves it.

    Jon Gruden owes him nothing.

Jason “Clueless” Licht will never wear his Jockstrap

  72. DBS Says:

I don’t care if you think Gruden would have something in his contract. This is the Glazers. It is also Bucs fans and media. All he has to do is piss them off again, the fans and media. Just about everyone wanted Dirk (but won’t admit it now) and want him gone now. And who wanted Smith back? Thought it was a good resign? They paid out his contract once and you don’t think they would do it again? The Glazers would protect themselves also.. He is not going to come back.

  73. cmurda Says:

I don’t see it as disrespectful. In fact, Joe and others have been beating the keep Koetter drum, so would you not think it’s possible the Glazers would keep Dirk? I personally think if Gruden wants the job, it’s his. Why should Gruden be condemned for this event? It doesn’t make sense. You are severely reaching. Gruden is much more ingrained in this community than Koetter. Dirk and Licht needed to man up and get rid of Mike Smith several weeks ago. This season could have been saved. neither of them did. I still think Licht should stay but Smith and Dirk should go. I don’t really care that the Glazers history of keeping coaches for 2 years. If Dirk isn’t the right guy, why pass up an opportunity if a coach like Gruden or Harbaugh might be available?

  74. not there yet Says:

You cover this franchise and are critical of players like Doug Martin for not producing and others for always being injured… You can be caught on your podcast still having on Adrian Clayborn but somehow Chucky is supposed to hide in a turtle she’ll and not do what he loves because koetter is a garbage head coach? That’s the hot take off a weak minded individual and it’s not Chucky’s fault dirk can’t handle his job…… Chucky is not employed by the bucs and can do whatever the hell he wants

  75. lambchop Says:

I think all the Gruden bashers need a history lesson. The guy was brought in behind Rich McKay’s back. Why? Because McKay thought it was too much to give up for one coach. Nobody predicted the quick turn around. McKay thought it was better to bring in Marty Schottenheimer at the time because he was offensive minded and successful with the Chargers offense. But, the Glazers didn’t listen. So, Gruden knew that McKay didn’t want him here. It was nothing personal from McKay, it was strictly business. So what happens? Chucky runs out McKay and brings in his do-boy Bruce Allen with the support of the Glazers cuz hell they already ransomed the whole draft and money on the guy and Gruden knew he had the Glazers by the balls. What happened next? Gruden made personnel decisions unilaterally.

Moral of the story: Don’t blame Gruden for turning into a hot mess. Blame the Glazers for being sycophants to every wish and whim of Chucky’s.

If Gruden comes back, this has to change. They need to get the GM first and then the coach. No ifs ands or buts about it. Let Gruden coach. Not every coach gets every stinkin player he wants. That’s what separates the great coaches like Belicheat who can get All Pro out of a no name player. He’s another extreme though so I wouldn’t follow his schtick to a T either.

Bottom line is, get a GM with some balls. Make sure the owners have some balls. And let Chucky coach and don’t blow up his ego all over the F-ing place by licking his ash. The Bucs turned him into the uncontrolled ego maniac that he became.

  76. lambchop Says:

Oh and if the GM has some stinkin Football IQ, that would be a HUGE help! No kickers in the 2nd! No lazy Haynesworth 2.0 DTs in FA!

  77. Bucfanrich Says:

Some of you guys blaming gruden for the past 10 years of sucking ,thats just crazy
Start blaming the glazier boys for not knowing to how to run a football team.

  78. cmurda Says:

I simply blame the ransom given up to get Chucky here. Was it worth it? Of course it was. Those shiny SB rings looked awfully sweet and whistling and horns honking after that game made it all worth it. Then, comes the aftermath. No 1st rd or 2nd rd pick for 2 years and then some. We were bound to be talent deficient as the heart of our defense was aging and we were replacing them with average at best talent. In hindsight, we all should have exercised patient with Gruden but Bruce Allen isn’t the right GM. I agree with lambchop that a GM with gonads is necessary. Chucky never met a veteran QB he didn’t like and he is too apt to make personnel moves that are mistakes. He needs to be coach and that’s where it ends. The problem there is I think Gruden would want more than that which is ultimately why I don’t see Gruden coaching the Bucs. The Giants? That could happen. A big market that I could see Gru soaking up.

  79. Roy T. Buford Says:

This is about nothing. Gruden had three appearances this year at MacDill alone. Once was cancelled in Spring. Another went as a speech to USCENTCOM folks, and then today. It’s not uncommon to see Jon Gruden at MacDill, and the timing doesn’t mean jack.
Gruden can go to MacDill all he wants. That’s awesome. Joe’s issue is having the media out there. Weak timing for the photo op/media side of this, considering the Bucs head coaching climate.–Joe

  80. NFLNut Says:

    **************

Gruden raving about Jameis AND saying the Bucs are 8-9 plays away from being 8-4 are akin to saying, “If I was the coach we’d be at least 8-4 and if I’m the coach next year, we’re making the playoffs and Jameis will be in the MVP race” … at least, that’s honestly how I take his comments.

I’ve made it clear before that I really like Koetter … but I also really like Gruden … I just want whoever will maximize Jameis’ abilities.

    **************

  81. FortMyersDave Says:

Yet JOE, I suspect Gruden’s visit will not stop Koetter from starting Martin and thus keeping the Bucs to around 50 yard rushing sans the QB and that Winston will have numerous 7 step drops where even the bad D D will tee him up while Mike Smith has his defense do it normal choke and we get an L to strat the X-Mas season. Gruden can talk all he wants Joe, but Koetter is the guy who continually loses winnable games to the level of the Bears, Giants, Fins and Browns. Embarrassing.
