Demoted Verner Now Waits

August 31st, 2016

VernerA few weeks ago, Alterraun Verner was a staring cornerback enjoying a career revival during his third Buccaneers training camp.

Tonight, Verner was a demoted former Pro Bowler playing in a rainy fourth preseason game while rookie Vernon Hargreaves and Brent Grimes got the night off with the roster’s most important players.

Verner wasn’t even the best Bucs corner on the field against the Redskins. That was nickel Hey Jude Adjei-Barimah. Announcer and Bucs icon Ronde Barber even said during the game broadcast that “Jude” might be the third-best corner on the roster.

So will Verner make the roster with his bloated, nearly $7 million salary?

Inexpensive Johnthan Banks and Josh Robinson emerged healthy from the game. Joe would not be surprised at all if Verner has a new address next week.

Like I’ve said all along. We’d better pray our 1st teamers can stay healthy for at least half a season. A lot of Our backups just do not look good on the field of play. I’ve never had confidence in Verner or Banks.

  2. mike10 Says:

What are the odds of us being able to trade him?

  3. Waterboy Says:

I doubt anyone would trade for Verner at his current salary. But after watching Josh Robinson tonight I think he’d go before Verner or Banks.

  4. Buc4Lyfe79 Says:

Sure..ship off your proven in-house depth even though you’ve got the cap space to spare. Nothing like being a multi-millionaire NFL GM playing russian roulette with your teams immediate future hoping healthy bodies can stay healthy for the long haul.

  5. cometowin2 Says:

Trade him? That’s rich. Great dude but not worth 7 million the way he’s playing. Banks pi$$ed me off with the loaf on the long touchdown run. When the DE passes you that’s a loaf. At least looks likes Robinson is trying. Looks like another top 4 draft pick next year at CB.

  6. cometowin2 Says:

    Top 4 rounds pick.

  7. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

(SMH) for the life of me I can’t see why y’all can’t see the writing on the wall. VH3 and Jude are the future at corner position. I’ve stated all summer you will look up three or four years from now and he’ll be a starter. Say what you what want about his play last season, the experience in live meaningful games was greatly impactful for this young man.

  8. feelthepewterpower Says:

Banks was burnt toast against CAR last year….good dude, just too slow at times.

  9. THETRUTH Says:

BUCS cut decisions should NEVER be based on CAP move , they are always under the cap so should not be issue EVER. Even with Revis trade we could have afforded to keep him. IF they move cause salary its all based on being cheap

  10. Burglife Says:

Robinson looked solid except for the 1!play which was a sellout blitz that didn’t get there. He made good taclkles, even dropped one of the running backs behind the line, and broke up a sure TD just reading eyes of the wideout, while Banks was getting taken for rides trying to tackle, and just gave up on one td run. Also Robinson is a beast on kick coverage.. I hope he stays, he sure won’t clear waivers, what are your thoughts Joes?

  11. Pickgrin Says:

So what if Verner IS the 4th best CB? What’s the point in cutting him when we are already $13M under the salary cap? He will contribute this year. If Verner is a #4 CB, he’s the best #4 CB in the league and would start on a lot of teams.

  12. Jeff Says:

He is sooooo gone! Joe sniffed this out before anyone else. Everything in the NFL is about money. No way the Bucs keep Verner just for depth. The Bucs do not operate that way. Never have and never will.

  13. Dreambig Says:

You guys aren’t being very realistic if you think money won’t come into play for personnel decisions. If you have two backups that are playing at a similar level, one makes 7 million and one makes 10% of that, if it was your money, what would you do? It will all come down to how big a drop off the coaches feel there is between Verner and the others. If it’s not that big of a gap, Verner will be playing elsewhere or will have to renegotiate to stay.

  14. Kobe Faker Says:

The problem with Verner is he is not a Licht Fav. Your going to get jumped over by a player drafted and signed by Licht

DID ANYONE SEE BRENT GRIMES TRYING TO COVER JOSH GORDON?

    LOL

1st 40 yard reception looked like a clown act? Grimes did a 360 trying to cover a overwieght and rusty reciever. Gordon had him look so silly! It looked like a curly 3 stooge act! But absolutely nothing is written about it? WTF! Can you imagine if that was verner

How about the belly flop by Grimes on the TD reception. We have people call that grimes bellyflop caused by Gordons pushoff! WTF! Can You imagine if that was verner

Amazing the stupidity of the Tampa fans and writers

Licht is the Casey Phillips of NFL GMs

We wont win anything with the IDIOT in charge

  15. Kevin Says:

I dont get it….how do these corners become so useless? Guy was a probowler and we brought his old dbs coach to tampa and now he is 4th or lower on the depth chart? If this really is a move influenced by jason licht Im gonna be pissed when yhis guy gets picked up by a contender a balls out. Glaziers need to look into this quietly because this soooo smells like a typical old bucs f up im not buying intl this. We dont have cap problens they need to keep theyre best players

  16. DemBoyzFromDaBay727 Says:

I sent this coming a week ago along with Joe, I don’t think the bucs keep Verner and his 7 mill to be a 5th corner. Not worth it. Not when u can find a guy WAY cheaper that p,as just as well. It o ly makes sense to move on and cut your losses. He should not be getting out played by Hey Jude OR Robinson. Banks has Certainly outplayed him. He’s had more Than his fair share of chances and has done nothing with it. Thx 4 your time as a Buc Verner, wish ya the best in the future.

  17. Kobe Faker Says:

Did anybody watch our number 1 corner grimes technique against Josh Gordon?

No one is worried? That technique looked like curly of the 3 stoves

We need to add players not throw away proven players like Gerber which 10 teams will fight for

Is everyone that scared of Miko Grimes?

  18. orlbucfan Says:

Banks blew it on the Skins’ TD run, but the BUCS’ DL was wet tissue paper. The DL backups were AWFUL!! Banks played pass defense very well in the slop. Broke up quite a few in the rain. He didn’t need to play the second half. Plus, he’s cheap salary-wise. He’s had 3 HCs in 4 years. He is not a head case, and is a team player. If Mike Smith cuts him, I’m going to wonder about HIM. Hope he’s not as stupid as the yahoo who cut Michael Bennet, right Joe! 🙂 Go Tampa Bay!!

  19. Nick2 Says:

I totally agree Verner is gone. The warning sign was him playing last night. Right then you knew Hargreaves was the starter and then Verner is competing against guys making a fraction of the money he is. I say Josh Robinson should get the nod over Banks but Banks does have size.

  20. Warren Says:

We’re talking about the CB’s but what about our safeties? Wasn’t it #37 Tandy loafing on the 60 yard run instead of tackling?

  21. Thomas Bowery Says:

Another wasted experiment and a Bucs player taking up roster space I say get rid of Berber and asj. Both of these guys have had plenty of opportunity to prove their worth and have failed to do so. It’s time to cut the cord on these two losers and find somebody on the waiver wire who’s going to be at least as good as them and more than likely better than them.

  22. SeattleBuc Says:

Tandy didnt loaf, he got boxed out and stiff armed in the face. Banks couldnt get off the block. Skins had a reciever #6 that was very physical.
