Thanking Josh McCown

May 4th, 2015
We must give thanks to Josh McCown for this gift.

We must give thanks to Josh McCown for this gift.

Well, the Bucs finally have a quarterback. Finally.

Joe has harped on this for years. The Bucs simply were going nowhere without a quarterback. Since leaky, sleepy Josh Freeman went mental, this team was doomed and the record reflected that.

Last year, Bucs coach Lovie Smith shoved all of his poker chips to the middle of the table for turnover-prone Josh McCown. In retrospect, it was a brilliant move because it sealed fate and enabled Tampa Bay to win the Chase for Jameis.

We must thank McCown. If not for his fumbling ways, if not for his scared-Labrador-puppy mentality when the offensive line broke down — and boy, did it ever! — Winston would not be here. McCown looked and played worse than a frightened high school freshman.

Yes, there were others who played key roles, such as Anthony Collins, ghostly Michael Johnson, Da’Quan Bowers and Taverras King. But none was as successful as McCown.

McCown ran this team into the ground — indirectly into a real quarterback.

Thank you, Josh. Thank you. Bucs fans will never forget your contribution.

“the Bucs finally have a QB”…glad you think so Joe and I hope you are right, but can we at least wait until he takes a snap as a starter before you jinx the guy.

  2. bucs4lyfe Says:

im starting to get worried about you joe seriously worried….

  3. Mark Biggens Bachman Says:

maybe you should also thank tedford’s heart

Don’t forget the tissues, Joe. Don’t wanna make a mess.

Pamphile is the one you should thank. He gave the Saints that last game on a platter.

    Dear La’el Collins:
    You can start!
You can play with a great young QB!
There is no state income tax in Florida!
    Hope to see you soon!

  7. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

I remember this time last year thinking that Mike Evans was a great pick and how sweet it would be if we got the number one overall pick in 2015. At the time I thought it was only a pipe dream. Surely Winston was going to some bottom dweller team much worse than the Bucs.

While McCown didn’t play well, I think it was the fact that Lovie decided to dismantle the o-line and replace them with worse players that gave of us Winston!

  8. JoeJoes Fungi Nails Says:

    You are sick Joe…..

  9. meh Says:

The last thing I want at the BEGINNING of the season is the #1 pick. What’s wrong with you TouchDownTampaBay?

  10. Patrick in VA Says:

If anyone has any photoshop skills and can put a Bucs #3 jersey on that picture I’m going to print it out and post it at my desk in the office.

  11. ToesOnTheLine! Says:

This is starting to feel like the Redskins fan base when they drafted RGIII…he was their savior too. We should all pray to a real messiah that Jameis’s level of maturity can catch up to his football talent, otherwise the team is still f*cked long term.

  12. Bucnjim Says:

I hope all the supporters were right. He is a Buc now and I support him now as well. Didn’t dislike him just hate having to start from scratch AGAIN with a rookie with potential. That 16 million is just hitting his bank account so we will soon see if he has matured.

  13. Josh P Says:

    meh….

Did you actually think the Bucs were going anywhere last season? Im sure TDTB wasn’t rooting for them to lose, but more less looking at the possibility of what the future would hold if we did have the #1 pick to pair with Evan.

  14. The Buc Realist Says:

Joe, don’t steal credit from the main culprit! Head coach/Gm Lovie Smith. He is the one that got the 2-14, everyone else was just a underling!

  15. JW-ARMY Says:

TO blame Josh McCown solely for the Bucs 2-14 season is stupid….it was a team effort and the coaching is equally to blame.

To put images on your website idolizing JW as the second coming of something special when the kid hasn’t played a down in the NFL is also stupid. I will bet you that even JW would say he does not like this blog post. Can we let this kid get a couple seasons under his belt without going all crazy stupid?

    Keep it real JBF.

  16. Patrick in VA Says:

Sweet Jameis people, calm down. The Joes are just having fun with the fact that we got a QB and there’s potential for good things. Pretty sure that they’re not predicting a Lombardi this year. Take a pill guys.

  17. BucBoy Says:

Joe praises Josh McCown’s prolific interception and fumble rate as being the reason why the Buc’s ended up with Jamarcus Winston, but his early onset alzheimer’s is kicking in because he is failing to state that Famous Porky Jameis is more prolific at throwing interceptions and turning the ball over than McCown.

The most humorous part of this whole rant is that McCown is faster than Famous Porky! Talk about scary!! Glennon can outrun Jamarcus!

This article reminds me of being in boot camp and the drill instructor coming in and throwing a trash can down the middle of the barracks at 4:30 in the morning. Joe’s gotten everyone riled up bright and early this morning with this one.

    Nailed it.

Hell, I can’t wait until Friday for the camp that’s coming up.

  22. charactermatters Says:

    JB,
that picture is sacrilegious no matter whose face you put on there. It is things like this that are annoying about the Winstonites. I want the kid to be successful – he’s a Buccaneer now, but images like this and references to him as Jameis Christ are downright despicable!

  33. DieHard_Bob Says:

@ Joe – First of all, the image is totally irrelevant to the article and it is totally offensive. Second, I don’t like or dislike the kid because I’ve never met him and don’t know him personally, however, I don’t trust him because trust is something that is not given but earned. I will support him and hope that he grows into our franchise QB in the future because I’m a diehard fan of my team, but he has a looooong way to go to prove himself. No one knows if he will ever become a top level pro QB, but I can guarantee you that he is NOT the second coming. Your readers (myself included), have had to put up with your “man crush” for months now and you won, you got your man, so please stop with the stupid photos and articles or your site will become unbearable to view.

  44. Dick2111 Says:

@JBF: “McCown ran this team into the ground — indirectly into a real quarterback.”

Is this really what Bucs Nation has evolved to? Demeaning a gritty competitor like Josh McCown who gave his all to this team, while simultaneously lifting up a 21-year old who hasn’t played a single down in the NFL to god-like status?

Joe, I hope I’m wrong, but something tells me that folks like you are setting this kid up for a big-time fall. I’d love for Jameis to have quick success because that’d mean the Bucs would experience a quick turnaround, and Lord knows we could use that.

But putting unrealistic expectations on a rookie QB’s shoulders doesn’t make them come true. You might want to give the kid a break and tone it down.

P.S. And by the way, the picture of Winston depicted as The Savior offends me too. I’d suspect it also offends a lot of the Bucs players also, including Jameis Winston himself.

  45. Capt.Tim Says:

Last years draft , while it brought in talent- didn’t address needs- and didn’t make sense
Until you look at it along with this draft. Last year we drafted skill positions, so that they would have a years experience. In preparation for-
    Jameis Winston.
If you knew this draft was going to happen, then last years draft makes perfect sense. Like the team “knew” our QB was coming, and we got his weapons in place.
Think we need to thank lots of people for our young QB. Looks like a group effort.

Have to say, if pieces work as planned- offense is just about a finished product. Just needs some depth.

Nice Piece Joe… I love the pic… Please don’t cave to the PC Police and or over sensitive wusses that may complain. Now onto the real group that really should be offended by this article the great legion of Labrador Retrievers around the bay area… It deeply offends me that you would mention McCown in the same sentence with a Labrador. May all the neighborhood dogs visit your yard today and leave stink biscuits of love…

Jameis himself is the one talking super bowls and competing with Brady and Manning… Nothing Joe writes here is going to top that. I am confused how some of you that suggest Joe and positive articles suggesting Jameis will have success early equal setting Jameis up for failure. Confidences is a good thing… Swagger is a good thing polarizing yes but good. again the entire locker room of choir boys, team captains and leaders have won 6 games in two years. In addition, they have embarrassed themselves twice so talk on young Jameis. Some of these folks just simply don’t get it and will never get it. The choir boy experiment failed miserably people… Notice in the draft they added a couple of outspoken chest ponders. You need a mix… And those who think McCoy and LVD will clip winstons wings that’s the stupidest thing ever. Obviously their way of leading is not making those around them better… Winston will succeed despite not having a head coach, he will make those around him better. it won’t happen fast with such a weak roster but Jameis will succeed… Winners Win and Losers make excuses while ensuring that everyone receives a trophy.

Those are his words not Joes. Jameis hypes himself up enough. I don’t think there is a writer on the planet that can hype Winston up as much as he does himself.

  59. Buc1987 Says:

In 2013 I had season tickets. I sat next to 3 FSU fans for every game. We talked about Jameis becoming a Buc a lot. We always just shrugged off the notion. I used to point out to our huddle on the field and say to them. “Imagine Jameis Winston in that huddle.” Then we’d start to talk about it happening. I never could have dreamed that the scenario would have played out that way.

Now I just wish I had atleast one of those dudes phone numbers, so we can talk about it again and laugh about how we used to talk about it in the stands 2 years ago.

I agree 100% and personally I love having that cockiness and swagger but a healthy respect for the preparation of the game.

People are crazy if you don’t think Brady and Manning and Bree’s and other elites aren’t cocky or talk trash.

I remember the Deflate Gate Brady presser and he literally laughed and mocked the media and NFL for those accusations – you all that call him classy and humble better recheck your math. We would be fools to think there wasn’t incentive to win the SB to prove the doubters wrong!

I’ve said it before and stand by it – Jameis biggest asset is his competitive nature and ability to inspire his teammates. I can see his swagger rubbing off on the whole offense.

Man it feels good to know we don’t have a folding chair for a QB anymore!!!!!!

    MMQB with Peter King

Interesting stuff and very good article :

Winston reported to the facility one day in early March, and offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter and quarterback coach Mike Bajakian taught him what he’d learn on the first day of rookie minicamp. “Day 1 Install,” it was called. Fifteen plays, runs and passes, with a slew of formations, progressions in the quarterback’s read, snap counts, coverages, hot receivers if the defense blitzed, offensive-line protections. Bajakian took 90 minutes to explain the “install,” flying through it on purpose, to throw a lot at Winston to see what he’d remember—more conceptually than in memorization. Then, as part of the information-overload, the coaches took him to lunch in the Bucs cafeteria, introducing him to a slew of people, talking to him about his family, doing whatever to get his mind off the football and on to something else. They wanted to test his recall, and his football acumen.

Back in the quarterback meeting room after lunch, Bajakian put tape of the plays they’d be installing on the big screen. What’s your formation here, Jameis? The protection? Your route progression? Who’s your hot receiver? Play after play, for 45 minutes they went through it. Winston remembered it all. Koetter has been coaching college and pro football since 1985. He is not a gee-whiz coach. Licht was blown away by Koetter’s impression after that couple of hours with Winston. “I’m going to compare every guy I test like that the rest of my career to Jameis,” Koetter told Licht.
