“The Elephant In The Room”April 2nd, 2014
Why is Bucs icon Derrick Brooks talking about an elephant?
Joe assures you it has nothing to do with the obsession of former Bucs captain Davin Joseph. Brooks is talking quarterbacks.
Sitting down with something called the Pewter Panel, Brooks is asked about the Bucs’ next moves and he goes right to leader of the offense.
“The elephant in the room is the quarterback position. You know, obviously signing Josh [McCown] and the length of his contract, some would say that’s more of a bridge, a Band-Aid approach,” Brooks said. “And the long term answer it may be here, it may be in the draft. I don’t know.”
Now that’s not going to make the Mike Glennon Mob or Rich Gannon happy. It seems like Brooks wasn’t completely won over by the 19 touchdown and nine interception rookie performance of Glennon last season. Perhaps it was the lack of wins and the Bucs’ 32nd-ranked offense? Joe’s not quite sure.
In the video linked above, Brooks praised the Bucs’ moves in free agency for not locking the team into drafting any one position early out of desperation. Brooks referenced receiver, defensive end and quarterback, as examples, of potential early draft targets but not necessary targets.
Yes, Joe agrees, quarterback is the elephant in the room, the giant beast of a decision facing Lovie Smith and Jason Licht.
