Is A Wise Move Coming?

February 10th, 2012

Joe’s not one to quote notorious WDAE-AM 620 host Dan Sileo, but Joe must admit that Sileo told his audience that Butch Davis was on his way to Tampa Bay in a matter of hours following the hiring of head coach Greg Schiano.

And since Sileo seems to have his finger on the pulse of all things related to his former football team, the Miami Hurricanes, Joe finds it worthy to share last night’s Tweet from the sometimes fabricating radio host. Sileo Twittered that veteran offensive line coach Tony Wise, a former Hurricane, will join the Bucs.

@DSHurricane93: Tony wise will be next Buc fans….ur welcome on butch davis

What a quality hire Wise would be — the fourth O-line coach in five years for the Bucs’ high-priced veteran unit. Wise won Super Bowl rings as the Cowboys’ O-line coach from 1989-1992.

Wise then moved on to the same role and an assistant head coach title with the Bears in the mid 1990s, and most recently served in the NFL with the Dolphins from 2001-2004, and the Jets in ’06 and ’07. His last job was with the University of Pittsburgh under Dave Wannstedt.

Seemingly, the Bucs could do a lot worse than an old trenches guy who knows what championship football looks like.

ahhh, seee everyone, things are so bad after all….

  2. Dave Says:

Like many of the assistants, do not know him. All we can do is look at the resume, and even that is very deceiving sometimes.

Just got to trust that Schiano, and probably a littl Butch Davis, know what they are doing.

Don’t know much about Tony Wise, but I am loving these old school coach hires. This team needs discipline, discipline is what we all asked for, and discipline is what we will get.

Also, it is said that Schiano will ban all coaches besides the offensive and defensive coordinators from talking to the media. The only other coach that does this right now is Bill Belichick. If Schaino wants to emulate Bill, then so be it. I like the way he is doing things so far.

I like it so far. Good mix of older and younger coaches. Older guys with NFL experience to pass on wisdom to the younger college coaches.

At this stage, it’s not going to be perfect, but, I am definitely off my ledge. Of course, still waiting for OC and QB coach.

I can hear Dandy Don singing to the Bucs players now “Turn out the lights, the party’s over”

  7. Meh Says:

I hope this is true. This would be a great choice.

  8. Buczilla Says:

In the back of my mind I can hear Elwood Blues… “We’re getting the band back together”.

This is outstanding if true. Wise is a fantastic coach and has worked with some of the best. This would also fit what I see developing. Strong senior leadership at the top with bright position coaches reporting up. Developing a fantastic staff while developing a strong fundamentally sound young team.

This is very similar to what we had under Dungy (OK, not so much on the OC side but you get my meaning). Someday, years from now, we could be talking about the Schiano coaching tree with great reverence. For now, I can say it looks like this could all shake out very well. Maybe the Glaziers were true to their word again…

    Me like.

This is turning out to be very interesting indeed. I have never heard of these guys before so all i am ging by is the resume. But from what im seeing they look good and i like that we are getting some vet coaches here with past WINNING experience.

I hope the players do their homework. Its gonna get really good folks.

    GO BUCS!!

  10. Brown Bag Says:

Wise or Marty would be fine.

Joe, I thought you would’ve called him “Silly-O”.

  11. bucfanjeff Says:

    Sounds good…where’s the OC?

It seems like this coaching search is like the “Where’s Waldo?” of football.

  12. Architek Says:

Man if all of these rumors come to pass then the Bucs will become competitive again very soon. Maybe not winners right away but I will rather build correctly than win with smoking mirrors.

  13. Cmurda Says:

Did I break rules on this message board? I’m not seeing my posts show up.

  14. bucfat Says:

    i like guy

  15. ALSTOTTSMART! Says:

    I need a smoking mirror….

  16. eric Says:

    Sounds good to me.

    Don Zimmer next?

  17. buddah Says:

If you haven’t heard of Tony Wise then you haven’t followed coaching closely. He’s one of the “senior” great offensive line coaches in football and he has the rings to prove it.

  18. TheProsUseAdvoCare Says:

A true mix of veteran and rookie coaches: Maybe this is a sign that Dominik wasn’t playing PR when he said he would hire free agents this year!?!?!

  19. FLBoyInDallas Says:

Another great hire and things are looking up & up with each passing day. As a fan this is all I can ask for at the moment. Now if we can nail down the OC hire we’ll be in business for a proper fresh start with this franchise.

Fly, you might get your wish.. Quarterbacks coach Mike Sullivan from the Giants supposedly got permission from Sgt Coughlin to interview of the Bucs HC position
