Ninety-nine Things About Warren Sapp

November 11th, 2013

It will be a special night tonight at the Stadium on Dale Mabry Highway, when at halftime, Bucs icon Warren Sapp will have his number retired and enter the Ring of Honor.

No one will ever wear No. 99 again for the Bucs, as it should be. Mentioning NO. 99, Joey Johnston of the Tampa Tribune has a list of 99 things you may or may not know about Sapp (get it, 99?). One that jumped out is the following.

14. Failed one class at UM — Public Speaking. It began at 8 a.m. He rarely showed up, but said he was given an “F” despite successfully completing all assignments.

What?! If there has ever been a born public speaker, it’s Sapp. The man was born to talk. Good grief, the man makes six-figures a year just to talk. Joe just cannot imagine Sapp failing public speaking. The instructor must have had a vendetta against him.

This is like the story of Michael Jordan being cut from his junior high basketball team. How?

Another nugget Joe found interesting was when Sapp was moved to defensive end from tight end, the guy who lost his starting job to Sapp is a guy better known for not playing football.

That man’s name is Dwayne Johnson. You know, “The Rock?”

“I’d Pay To See Those Guys Play”

November 11th, 2013

It might surprise you who Chucky is talking about in this Monday Night Football preview video from BSPN.com. Cue the Mob!

“Step Up And Make A Play In Critical Moments”

November 11th, 2013

Chucky talks about the Bucs possibly winning a game

Chucky seemed to be in disbelief that the Bucs haven’t made enough big plays in the final minutes of games to actually win one. Speaking this morning on WDAE-AM 620, Gruden says the Bucs have the talent to make those plays, especially in the secondary.

Joe referenced this interview earlier (Glennon gushing), and you can listen to the audio below. Chucky also characterizes the Dolphins hazing mess as “a bizarre almost misunderstanding.”

Don’t Get Stuck In Traffic

November 11th, 2013

Getting to the game tonight is going to be a mess. Joe knows he’s taking off way early. First, it is a night game, and throw in fighting rush hour traffic. What a mess. Watch award-winning traffic reporter, “Road Warrior” Holley Sinn of WTSP, offer up tips to beat that traffic. She even has a path to the game Joe never thought of that makes sense. You can catch Holley and her thorough traffic reports weekday mornings on WTSP-TV Channel 10.

“It’s The Dis-Position”

November 11th, 2013

Plenty of football lessons and history were delivered on the Buccaneers Radio Network special of “Warren’s World,” when Bucs broadcasting chief Jeff Ryan sat down for an hour with Warren Sapp on Friday evening. You can listen here.

In addition to a fun story about telling dirty jokes around Father Dungy, Sapp delivered a neat nugget that explained how Gruden opened Sapp’s eyes when he challenged the “very fabric of our defense and our discipline.”

The discipline part was intriguing, and applied to 2013 Bucs, especially when you consider how the Bucs lost contain against Cam Newton and Russell Wilson in their last two games.

“That’s the biggest thing I try to teach these kids all the time when I meet with them. It’s not the position of a player that gets you beat. It’s the dis-position,” Sapp said. “It’s when you’re not where you’re supposed to be when you’re supposed to be there. Hey, man, trust! That’s why I don’t call it a family; it’s a brotherhood of men.”

Again, as Joe’s written previously, losing contain is a discipline issue, one that’s mind-boggling from a team with a head coach that preaches discipline daily.

Peter King Down On Bucs’ Pass Rush

November 11th, 2013

Peter King, editor of theMMQB.com, believes Lauren Tannehill won’t have to worry about her quarterback husband getting bruised tonight facing the Bucs’ miserable pass rush.

Joe harps about it. Fans harp about it. Sports radio yakkers scream and kvetch about it. Coaches may lose jobs over it.

“It” being the Bucs pass rush, or more accurately, lack of a pass rush.

It astounds Joe that for the past five years the Bucs have prioritized building a pass rush, yet they’ve only been able to find and keep one guy who can stay healthy and produce, despite all the draft picks and free agents signed and/or let walk away by the Bucs.

Sadly, Gerald McCoy cannot do much by himself. And NFL insiders openly scoff at what is trumpeted as a Bucs pass rush. Just take pedestrian-bumping, olive oil-lappingpopcorn-munchingcoffee-slurpingfried-chicken-eatingoatmeal-lovingcircle-jerkingbeer-chuggingcricket-watchingscone-loathingcollege football-naïve,baseball box score-reading Peter King, of Sports Illustrated and NBC Sports fame. He is convinced the Bucs will lose tonight partly because of an invisible pass rush their front four.

Miami 24, Tampa Bay 13. If I thought the Bucs could take advantage of the leaks on the Miami offensive line brought about by Incognitogate, I would predict otherwise. But I don’t.

How sad is that that the pass rush is so impotent, sans one player, a Dolphins team that was already leaky before it lost its entire starting left side of the line over two weeks, has professionals inside the NFL chuckling at the thought of the Bucs getting heat on Ryan Tannehill?

Joe is confident that if Bucs commander Greg Schiano returns for 2014, then there will be major changes to his coaching staff, in part, because the Bucs routinely cannot get close enough to quarterbacks to spit on them.

Sapp Delivers Another Schiano Slap

November 11th, 2013

Offensive linemen had trouble containing Warren Sapp, and it seems Bucs management can’t keep him out of their backfield, either.

Sapp has had plenty of words recently for the New Schiano Order, even as the team prepares to retire his number and devote an entire night (tonight!) to his memory. Sapp has referred to the Bucs regime as “mafia-style,” blasted defensive schemes, and he just couldn’t hold back another dig Friday night, which apparently broke a promise.

Sapp took to the local Buccaneers Radio Network airwaves on WDAE-AM 620 and sat down with Bucs director of broadcast operations Jeff Ryan. The two re-lived memories of their Glory Years radio show and hit a number of topics. The 2013 Bucs seemed to be off-limits, but they came up when Ryan talked about studying the nuances of football.

Jeff Ryan: Isn’t that amazing, though, now you can actually get coaches’ tapes? It just blows me away.

Warren Sapp: All-22.

Ryan: I know. You just order it; you’ve got it at home.

Sapp: So it would be silly to go up on a podium and say something like, ‘we played a bunch of man-to-man.’ And people at home can go look at it.

Ryan: Don’t go down that road.

Sapp: Ok. I’m just making sure.

Ryan: Don’t go down that road. (laughs) You promised me. Don’t go down that road.

Sapp: I’m just sayin’. (laughing)

Yes, Sapp joins the legions of fans and ex-NFL players that don’t agree with how the Bucs have used Darrelle Revis to date. But it seems Sapp was more perplexed by the New Schiano Order potentially misleading media when it came to using Revis. Was it gamesmanship? Protecting Revis? Preserving a competitive advantage?

That should be old news now, as Revis is getting healthier and playing lots more press-man coverage over the past two games. What won’t be old news is Sapp continuing to hammer Schiano’s defense, especially if the Bucs don’t start winning more they lose.

Revis On Brian Hartline?

November 11th, 2013

The Dolphins have two stud wide receivers in Brian Hartline and Mike Wallace. So where will Darrelle Revis spend his time tonight?

It’s a big tactical decision for the New Schiano Order. Wallace is a speedster, and Hartline is more crafty.

The Dolphins writers at the Sun-Sentinel projected Revis would be assigned to take Hartline out the game because he’s part of quarterback Ryan Tannehill’s comfort zone.

Hartline (38 receptions, 477 yards, 2 TDs) could have career bests in receptions, yards and TDs. But Revis is a different animal. If he doesn’t shadow WR Mike Wallace (36 receptions, 480 yards, 1 TD), Revis will spend time on Hartline. If he shuts down Hartline, the game becomes much tougher for QB Ryan Tannehill because he has his best rapport with Hartline.

Joe’s not concerned about Revis; Joe’s concerned about what’s across from Revis. Leonard Johnson has had a poor sophomore season. Danny Gorrer is still fresh off groin surgery, and Michael Adams is a getting his legs back after midseason knee surgery. Johnthan Banks is battling through what is believed to be MRSA.

Unless the Bucs find their M.I.A. pass rush, one of those guys needs a standout game tonight.

Chucky Loves Glennon Deep-Ball Skill, Mobility

November 11th, 2013

The man fired after consecutive 9-7 seasons with three years left on his Buccaneers contract, Jon Gruden, has been studying all things Bucs-Dolphins in preparation to call tonight’s Monday Night Football madness in Tampa.

And that means Chucky has plenty of opinions to share. He got the ball rolling today on WDAE-AM 620, where Chucky glowed about Mike Glennon.

“Functional mobility, I think that’s the weapon he had that not a lot of people expected,” Gruden said. “He has an excellent passing motion. I think he’s going to be a very good deep ball passer.

“Remember, the Buccaneers are missing some key weapons. They really don’t have a tight end working the middle of the field. They’ve lost their slot receiver, Ogletree, that started the season. And Mike Williams’ absence is huge, let alone the great Doug Martin. But I like the kid. I think he’s got a big upside. I think as his supporting cast improves, so will he.”

Chucky’s usually a stickler for details, Joe’s wondering if the above quote means Chucky isn’t a big fan of Tim Wright and Tiquan Underwood fan.

Of course, the jury’s out on whether Glennon can be a “very good deep ball passer.” (Perhaps Chucky liked the defensive-pass-interference throws to Skye Dawson?) The Bucs are going to have to give Glennon those opportunities.

On Josh Freeman, Chucky kept it simple. He said Freeman doomed himself with “radical inconsistency.”

“When you’re completing 45 percent of your passes, making a quarterback change is an easy thing to do,” Chucky said.

The Rookie Wall

November 11th, 2013
Mark Barron had a decent rookie season in 2012 until the dreaded rookie wall hit. Bucs coach Greg Schiano hopes to prevent that from happening to current rookies this season.

Mark Barron had a decent rookie season in 2012 until the dreaded rookie wall hit. Bucs coach Greg Schiano hopes to prevent that from happening to current rookies.

Some rookies wave off any notion that a rookie wall affects them, even though it obviously has.

For those unaware, a rookie wall represents the concept that halfway through an NFL season a player crosses a boundary that would otherwise have signaled a full season of college football. Last week was that week for Bucs rookies.

To help the rookies manage the rookie wall, Bucs commander Greg Schiano had a sitdown with all youngsters this week, telling them what they can expect from their bodies.

“I just met with them one day earlier this week,” Schiano said. “We had the rookie meeting and I sat them down, I said ‘Okay your college season is over’ and they looked at me kind of puzzled. I said ‘Yeah, the four preseason games which you guys played a ton in and then the eight regular season games, that’s it, that’s your 12 game college season. Now what do we have left?’ They all smiled. It’s being aware first, this is uncharted territory for these guys. Then, what can I do? The benefit is you don’t have class to go to. You don’t have to take care of these other things. Get your rear end in bed, get your rest, study your playbook, do your prehab and your rehab, and then get in bed. The tough thing for rookies is all the other catchings of the NFL. Everybody wants to do something every night and that’s where we try to educate, educate, but at the end of the day it’s still an individual choice for all those rookies.”

Mark Barron was a perfect example of a rookie wall. Last year, as a rookie, he had a pretty decent first-half of the season. Once November rolled around, his play started to tail off.

For rookies, it has been pretty much been non-stop football since training camp of their final year of college football. Once the college bowl season ends, guys going into the draft begin working out for the combine. Then there’s the combine and the 6 a.m.-midnight interviews, tests, physicals, workouts, etc. It doesn’t stop there in Indianapolis. There are the pro days, the individual team workouts and then — BOOM! — they are right into rookie minicamps and before you know it, their first NFL training camp begins.

Fortunately for the Bucs, they are not depending on too many rookies each game. Akeem Spence and Johnthan Banks have started or played significantly in just about every game thus far. Sure, Mike James is a rookie but until the past couple of games, played sparingly.

The rookie wall, however, is real. And it hits rookies like a piano falling on their backs.

Happy Veterans Day!

November 11th, 2013

veterans-day-topIn case your coffee hasn’t kicked in yet this morning, it’s Veterans Day, the 11th day of the 11th month.

There’s quite a few people all around you — you may know a few, be related to a few — that did a whole helluva lot just so you can read Joe’s daily screeds about the Bucs (and of course, gawk at Rachel Watson).

So if you know someone that served once upon a time, just say thanks. Or, Joe recommends what Joe does, a tradition he started a few years ago. Later this afternoon, Joe will walk into a local VFW hall — an American Legion post will suffice — and step up to the bar and buy a round for the vets. Joe will then promptly walk out once the bill is paid.

It’s a small token of appreciation for what quite a few did so slobs like us wouldn’t be forced to eat sauerkraut each day, with a side of sushi and subjected to soccer.

Also, try to keep those who are currently serving overseas to protect us from the animals that fly planes into buildings in your thoughts at least once today.

You’ll be better off for it, trust Joe.

Covering Vincent Jackson

November 10th, 2013

One reason the Bucs have struggled is the loss of Mike Williams. Among the better, No. 2 wide receivers in the NFL, Williams missed time and then was placed on the injured reserve list after trying to come back from a nasty hamstring injury.

Common sense suggests that, with virtually no other reliable receiver on the roster aside from stud No. 1 receiver Vincent Jackson, teams would load up on taking Jackson out of the game.

Bucs commander Greg Schiano spoke this week about how defenses have gone after Jackson.

“They’re always going to dedicate coverage to Vincent,” Schiano said. “But we had some things going – up until last week – where were able to, still with the coverage adjustments, some route adjustments that were doing and planning for how they were trying to take Vince away when we had him as the primary guy on the route and he was still able to get the football. Last week, not so much, and that happens sometimes. You can’t let it happen too much. There’s several different ways Miami can attack the receiving core this week and it’s going to be interesting to see how they do. I think part of it has to do with the health of their secondary. I think depending on who’s healthy at corner, how they’ll deploy their guys. We’ll have to adjust as we see what the game plan is.”

Now this ought to be interesting Monday night. Will the Dolphins try to mimic what the Seahawks did to take Jackson out of the game? And if they do, and the Bucs already knowing how the Seahawks took Jackson out of the game, can the Bucs adjust accordingly?

Thus far this season, adjusting has not been the Bucs’ forte.

Bucs Seize No. 1 Draft Position

November 10th, 2013

Geno Hayes helped the Bucs today

How ’bout them Jaguars!

Jacksonville scored its first win of 2013 today in Tennessee. Their leading tackler? Mr. Geno Hayes.

This means the Bucs are the lone winless club in the NFL, proud holders of the No. 1 pick in the 2014 draft, if the season ended today.

Of course, this should make any Bucs fan ill. But when the nausea wears off, Joe’s sure many Bucs fans will be thinking about Johnny Football who the Bucs could land with that pick. It’s at least something interesting to consider before the Bucs kick off tomorrow night and try to penetrate the Dolphins’ porous offensive line.

Put Ryan Tannehill On The Ground!

November 10th, 2013

Gerald McCoy is simply not getting any help from the edge in pass rushing situations.

If the Bucs are ever to climb out of the hole of the first pick in the 2014 draft, it would help to get off the field on third down once in a blue moon in the second half. The Bucs couldn’t do that in Seattle, one major reason why they hacked up a three-touchdown lead.

A reason the defense cannot stop teams in the second half is the myth of a Bucs pass rush. The only guy getting pressure is Gerald McCoy up the middle, and when no one is containing on the edges, it’s way too easy for quarterbacks to step away from GMC.

As Joe has harped on, if the Bucs are ever going to right their rumor of a pass rush, it is Monday night’s game. The Dolphins, who already were giving up a terrible amount of sacks, have lost their entire left side of their starting offense line because of their locker room mess.

Cool cat Peter Schrager of Fox Sports seems to agree in his weekly cheat sheet.

I’d pay a pretty penny to hear the pregame conversation between Joe Philbin and Greg Schiano on Monday night. “So, how are things?” The Bucs are welcoming Warren Sapp back, retiring his jersey and the whole deal. There’s a chance the Dolphins rally together in an “Us Against the World” effort, but I think the lack of two starting offensive linemen will take too great a toll. I like Tampa Bay to get its first win.

The sad thing is, until the Bucs actually show they can rush the passer, it doesn’t matter if it is the Dolphins or East Lake High School are on the field (and the way the Bucs don’t get pressure off the edge, you wonder if they could against a high school team). The simple inability to get a quarterback’s jersey dirty from defensively linemen blows Joe’s mind.

If the Bucs cannot put Tannehill on the ground against scrubs of the NFL’s worst O-line, then if Bucs commander Greg Schiano does return for the 2014 season, Joe is confident there will be changes made to the defensive front, if not the guys alleged to be coaching them.

“A Total Debacle”

November 10th, 2013

Joe knows Bucs fans have been waiting with baited breath to learn the midseason analysis of olive oil-lappingpopcorn-munchingcoffee-slurpingfried-chicken-eatingoatmeal-lovingcircle-jerkingbeer-chuggingcricket-watchingscone-loathingcollege football-naïve,baseball box score-reading Peter King, of Sports Illustrated and NBC Sports fame. Below is King’s video breakdown of the Bucs after eight games, and you may be a bit surprised what he finds to be the most revolting element of the winless Bucs in this SI.com video.
