Bring On Darrelle Revis!

June 14th, 2013

darrelle revis 0521

Joe has gathered all sorts of info. from Bucs players and coaches this week that will be pumped out on these here pages in the coming days. One thing Joe got from some young defensive backs is how much it helps them going up against Vincent Jackson and Mike Williams each and every day.

Soon it will be the receivers who will be tested.

Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik, freshly sheared, claims star cornerback Darrelle Revis will be in pads on the first day of training camp late next month. But being in pads is one thing, as Joe told his good friend, “The Big Dog,” Steve Duemig, on WDAE-AM 620 this week. It’s quite another to be in contact. If Revis is able to go full speed with no restrictions, Bucs receivers are all but saying, “‘Bring it on, Revis!'” so writes eye-RAH! Kaufman of The Tampa Tribune.

“I keep telling him I’m not one of those receivers he’s been checking,” Williams said with a smile following Wednesday’s practice. “Darrelle said he’s been going against the best, and I told him, ‘If the ball’s in the air, I’m going to get it.’ We keep arguing every day.

“I can’t wait to go against a guy of that caliber. He can get me better.”

It’s not so much an ego thing with Jackson. Rather, he believes Revis and Goldson will make him better for an upcoming opponent.

“Darrelle and (safety) Dashon Goldson are going to shore up our secondary,” Jackson said. “When Darrelle lines up against me, I know he’s going to give me his best and he knows I’m going to give him my best. When you’re going against looks on Wednesday through Friday that are harder than what you face on Sundays, that’s an advantage.”

Joe knows talk is cheap, especially in June. Still, from what Joe has seen and heard, he loves the attitude of this Bucs team.

It makes sense that going against the best in the NFL (Jackson/Freeman vs. Revis, for example) can only help the team, just like Schiano’s now famous cry for competition.

There’s no way of putting a specific value on how much this competition helps, but Joe would hope it could lead to two extra wins.

Being a big Bucs fan from the UK since about 2007/8, this is the first time I feel a legitimate hype building around this team. None of that ‘youngry’ sh*t.

Seems like there will be a lot of pressure on free this year, hopefully he delivers. Bucs feel a bit like SF a couple years ago, building a great team with pro bowl pieces but the QB question ever present…

I love Mike’s attitude! Can’t wait for these guys to go at it in practice. Gotta love the confidence mike will is showing here but I can’t help but think Revis is going to win more of those battles.

    Amen James Pearls.

Hopefully a quality CB is what Williams needs to take his game to the next level

So excited about what Revis brings to this team!! Elevating the secondary and WRs play.

Not to mention being the greatest defensive player in the game!

Glad that recovery is going great- because this guy is a once in a generation talent- and I can’t wait to see him on the Field, wearing the Red and Pewter!

People talk about camp battles at TE, Slot WR, and SLB but THIS is the competition I would like to see. Revis vs Jackson, Revis vs Williams, and Revis vs Freeman. Should be interesting . . .

    What about Marvin?

I’m digging on the pride in themselves and the respect these vets have for each other.
Love to see MW get some pineapple this season.

Mikey!!! I love his attitude and confidence, something that winning teams have. Just dont hurt our 96 million dollar man please! I agree about the genuine excitement and hype about this team, and we corrected our main cause of losing last year (pass defense).

But in reality what QB question is there? We have one option and that’s resign Freeman. How is starting a 2nd year QB with zero experience, and who is a strong gust of wind away from an injury an option? Do we really wanna start all over, I mean this seems like the Chris Simms experiment 2.0.

We should have signed Freeman already because now if he has a great season he will destroy our cap. We could have signed him after last season for much less and if we didnt want to keep him next year at least he would be under contract and we could get something for him instead of letting one of our best assets walk for nothing.

We should have several players sipping piña coladas in Hawaii come January. And yes, Revis & Goldson will only make our receivers better. I’m ready for the season to begin!

    snowman,

This is the best scenario for both Freeman and the Bucs. Freeman gets a chance to earn a HUGE PAY DAY, and we are not married to our QB without him “proving it” in 2013.

    It is a win-win scenario.

Look at all of the young QBs around the league, finding their way to the playoffs. We can do this!

  12. PRBucFan Says:

Yup, I mentioned this in the Banks thread, the offense and defense is only going to make each other better.

  13. Jacko101 Says:

    Season Tickets (check)

    @stevek

I don’t think it as win-win as people may think. Snowman is correct. What IF Freeman lights it up this year? His contract will quadruple from what if could have been and the likes of McCoy, Revis, Nicks and Joseph won’t be wearing pewter and red very long. I’m not saying we shouldve thrown the bank at him but I’m just saying i wouldve bought Freeman in Black Friday rather the opening day of the product.

Look at Baltimore. Multiple meh seasons from Flacco then BOOM. Bye Reed. Bye Boldin. Bye Carey Williams. Bye the heir replacement for Lewis.

  15. PRBucFan Says:

    @Buc’it

    OH WELLS…

If he earns a huge contract he earns it, they’ll deal with that when and IF it ever gets here. One thing is for sure is that he sure as hell hasn’t deserved the right to sniff a new contract up till now. I sure am elated that our FO is going about this in the most intelligent way possible.

  16. Buc'It Says:

    #PR

you say ‘oh well’ until some of your favorite players are shown the door in a very unceremoniously way. Remember the couple seasons following our Super Bowl? You construct a team for longevity not to have 15 minutes of fame. Freeman did earn a new contract, what he didn’t earn was a HUGE one.

  17. scubog Says:

Love the moniker Abdominal. I’m not concerned about the salary cap non-issue at all. I’m sure Dominik and his accounting geeks have it all figured out. To me it’s the so-called “dead money” that kills the ability to re-sign one’s own players who are worthy. As I recall, the Bucs don’t have a lot of that part of the salary cap devoted to players no longer on the team.

  18. PRBucFan Says:

He did NOT earn the type of contract he wants,

Unless you think he would have signed a mediocre contract lol…

And yup OH WELLS, he’s got no one to blame but himself. The balls in his court now for the last time. Let’s see what he does with it.

  19. PRBucFan Says:

And after this season it would have been 5 years, IF he fails and is shown the door..

    That’s hardly “unceremonious” jaja

I’d say 5 years is a fair shot
