“I’m A Big Josh Freeman Fan”

June 12th, 2013

While professing to be a big fan of Josh Freeman, former Bucs quarterback Shaun King wonders how well Freeman can adjust to yet another new quarterbacks coach.

The former quarterback so many Bucs fans hate on — for reasons Joe doesn’t totally understand — Shaun King, one of three Bucs quarterbacks to lead the team to an NFC Championship game, appeared on the “Ron and Ian Show” Tuesday on WDAE-AM 620, and unlike many Bucs fans, professed his admiration for Bucs quarterback Josh Freeman.

“I’m a big Josh Freeman fan,” King said. “I think once you get past the elite group of quarterbacks in the NFL, Josh is in that next group, and I think Josh will surprise a lot of people this year.”

If Freeman has a hiccup this season, King believes it could be the result of yet another new quarterbacks coach Freeman will have to adapt to.

“There has to be a trust factor there with your position coach,” King said. “You have to trust a guy that is coaching you. You have to feel like you can be honest with him. When they are in the coaches meetings, you have to trust that he will be fair about how you thought about something or how you feel moving forward about certain parts of the system. That is something that Josh is going to have to build.

“It is unfortunate that he has to make that change [to another new quarterbacks coach]. I think Ron Turner helped Josh fundamentally [last season] and I don’t think [Bucs quarterback coach John] McNulty is a quarterback coach. I think he is more of a wide receivers coach and a coach that [Bucs coach Greg] Schiano wanted on staff, and that was the only opening for quarterbacks [coach]. I don’t know how much he is going to do for Josh. I know he has worked with quarterbacks in the past but at heart, he is a wide receivers coach.”

“and I think Josh will surprise a lot of people this year.”

are you sure Shaun King said that? if he did I think thats the first positive thing Ive ever heard him say about the bucs. Its nice to see him have a positive outlook on something, good for him.

  2. FLBoyInDallas Says:

I don’t see Freeman having an issue with another QB coach. Sullivan is a QB coach at heart and there is continuity there as well as with the offensive system. King is overstating things. As usual.

But man, I am so completely tired of hearing anything Shaun King has to say. He is the Mr. Irrelevant of Bucs commentators. Even his supportive statements are laced with criticism and bitterness. I think he, Eric and the_buc_pessimist would get along great. They could have a BFF circle jerk of sarcasm and cynicism and all go home satisfied.

  3. the_buc_realist Says:

Joe, any truth to the rumor, that the hold up on Glennon signing were the clauses for if and when he takes over for Jfro ???

  4. Andrew 1 Says:

what I dont understand is why Sullivan cant tell McNulty to work on the things Freeman and Ron Turner used to work on, this way Freeman wont have to relearn or adapt to a new QBs coach as much. I dont believe that would be farfetched whatsoever. I realize Turner and McNulty are two different people, but Sullivan knows exactly what Turner worked on with Freeman and chances are Freeman needs to continue to work on the exact same things.

  5. Warrenfb12 Says:

Fail King. McNulty was hired because he was Schiano’s offense coordinator at Rutgers. Getting McNulty in now as a QB coach lets him learn the ins and outs of the offense. Once Sullivan bolts for a HC job, McNulty can step in to keep things familiar and run the same offense/maintain consistency for the QB. (Whoever that is)

Here is Joe’s stance on rookies signing contracts:

The only time it is news is when they don’t sign. Joe doesn’t know nor care what is in Glennon’s contract.

What Joe cares about is results on the field, not success his agent/lawyer has in a board room.

    @ Warrenfb12

good point. that didnt even cross my mind.

Starting to see some very very early prognostications and predictions from a couple of our writers, from looking at the Bucs schedule, there is a belief that the Bucs have a very good chance of wining the South, reasons given:
hands down, the best defense in the division,
    best RB in the div,
    best O-Line in the div,
Bucs WRs can equal Atl’s production wise,
the caveat – “If Josh Freeman can perform on a consistant basis”

    I have seen predictions of w/l record between 10-6 & 12-4

Not one writer I have spoken to believes, short of a season ending injuries to Free and Orlavsky, that Glennon has a chance of seeing the field this season or maybe ever as Buccaneer.

  9. Macabee Says:

Seventh round pick Cody Grimm held out until July 29, 2010, 4:30pm EDT. lol, big deal!

  10. Buc-n-Junkie Says:

The position coach has no bearing on how Josh physically plays on game day. He can teach the X’s and O’s., the fundamentals, and tweak his skills but the coach doesn’t throw the ball. As far as confidentiality and presuming your position coach has your back when it comes to coaches meetings, I would assume that that has to be a given. A personality clash would be unconducive and would stunt any conveyance of knowledge. Hopefully, if there is one thing coach McNulty brings to the table is a degree in psychology. A QB whisperer.

  11. Macabee Says:

    flmike,

I agree with your post. I think the Bucs have a good chance to win the NFC-South this year, but I posted this link to show there are outliers out there and Las Vegas is also bearish on the Bucs this year. Like you, I haven’t seen any reputable NFL analysts that are predicting a down year for the Bucs.

  12. tmaxcon Says:

@ Warrenfb12 well said. i believe you are very accurate in that statement. Sullivan will be gone after this year if the bucs have even moderate success. he has a hell of a resume and that west point background is impressive.

Glennon is nothing more than a pawn. Best case scenario for bucs is that he kicks arse in the preseason the next couple of years which results in the bucs cashing in. some QB desperate team will overpay for the preseason hype of glennon. his agents have no bargaining ability to included clauses, let us not forget he is a 3rd rounder that is a project.

  13. tampabaybucfan Says:

Shaun King “One of two Buc Quarterbacks to lose an NFC Championship Game when his defense gave up 11 or fewer points”……I actually finally find myself agreeing with Shaun.
I expect Freeman to do well this year.

  14. Kalind Says:

Eureka! He has a brain! Must have asked the Wizard of Oz or something.

Finally, something fell out of Shaun King’s head that made sense. I think there’s a cliche about squirrels and nuts in there somewhere.

  15. flmike Says:

    @Macabee
I love the quote “I haven’t seen any reputable NFL analysts that are predicting a down year for the Bucs.” then the link to the puke-report, I always feel like a need a shower after reading their crap.

I saw one early draft of an article where the writer has the Bucs splitting with the Falcons and sweeping the rest of the div and then losing to SF/Sea/NE outside the div. Then one where another writer has them lose both to Atl, sweep the rest of the div and then lose to SF/Sea/NE & StL outside the div.

    So 12-4 to 10-6

  16. PRBucFan Says:

“If Freeman has a hiccup this season, King believes it could be the result of yet another new quarterbacks coach Freeman will have to adapt to.”

I hope that’s not the *new tune/excuse if another *hiccup occurs lol…

That being said, I’m trying to temper my excitement for this season. jajaja

“Glennon is nothing more than a pawn.”

    – Sorry man, but 3rd round picks are not “mere pawns”,
However, I do believe JF will determine Glennon’s future on this team..

  17. Kalind Says:

Guys, remember, Shaun King said something positive. The date is June 12, 2013.

(Also, its cause Mark Dominik didnt come up in the convo)

  18. robintampa Says:

Joe- I wouldn’t say Shaun King is ‘hated on’ only that the people on this site think he is Shleprock when it comes to the Bucs and he comes off as bitter. He seems to criticize every move the team makes and every sliver of positive is sandwiched in between severe negativity. Even if he has good points to make the fact that he is consistently (and overwhelmingly) negative cancels out his opinion. There was an episode of the NatGeo show “Brain Games” the other night that showed how leading with a negative thought changes perception of a person’s entire message– even if the entire message has the same positive and negative components.

I personally respect him for what he did as a player.. that Monday night game against the Rams where he and Dunn improvised an amazing play was nothing short of brilliant. But as soon as I see “King says” in your headlines I usually go right past the article. (this one is a noted exception because you said you didn’t understand why).

  19. Brandon Says:

I think he is more of a wide receivers coach and a coach that [Bucs coach Greg] Schiano wanted on staff, and that was the only opening for quarterbacks [coach].

    ++++++++++++

Really, King? It was the only opening? Is PJ Fleck still out there coaching our WRs? McNulty could’ve had the WRs job, but because he has experience as an OC and as a QB coach, he made sense at QB coach. King clearly forgot to do his homework again. I suspect his frequent fast food schedule gets in the way of that.

  20. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    the_buc_realist Says:
“Joe, any truth to the rumor, that the hold up on Glennon signing were the clauses for if and when he takes over for Jfro ???”

You tell us. You made up the rumor.

  21. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Not only that, Brandon, but King infers that McNulty can’t coach QBs, yet says Freeman will be better this year. He’s contradicting himself.

Add the fact that King has been slamming Josh for years now and it is King as usual.

  22. al121976 Says:

I wonder what king would say if freeman were white?

  23. the_buc_realist Says:

    @al121973

He would say he is white and inaccurate!

  24. The 300's Says:

Joe here is the reason why we diss on Shaun King so much:

Unlike Ronde Barber, he never improved himself past his rookie year and was beat out by the likes of Brad Johnson and Garcia among others.

He never got into “game shape” which means he didn’t care about his team enough to get his body better prepared.

The defense is what got us to the NFC Championship game the year King was quarterback (kinda like say Brad Johnson the only quarterback to lead the Bucs to the Super Bowl).

And I think he has a grudge against Dominik because he is the last of the suits left over from King’s days at quarterback. Days in which someone was always being brought in to replace him….. and they succeeded multiple times.

  25. madmacskillz Says:

Joe, the reason some fans don’t like Shaun King is because they think he’s not credible enough to be so hypercritical. King was 15 – 10 as a Bucs starter, meaning he’d win 3 and lose 2. The numbers say he was a mediocre quarterback. But numbers don’t tell the whole story – his play on the field was sometimes dreadful and often mediocre, and if it weren’t for a stellar defense I’m betting he’d have had a losing record. So for him to sit on a throne and call people out is inappropriate in the eyes of some fans.

  26. Hawaiian Buc Says:

Seriously Joe, you don’t completely understand why Bucs fans hate on King? You are much smarter than that. How about because he says absolutely nothing positive about the Bucs, unless it involves Raheem (no longer here) or Freeman. I also love how he says Freeman will do well, yet slides in a built in excuse my mentioning the QB coach. Do you want to put money on it that if Freeman fails it will be McNulty’s fault? Oh wait, he’s already said that. Can you honestly with a straight face say that King isn’t biased? There just comes a point where there’s no more excuses. I think Freeman will have a good season, but if he doesn’t the blame goes 100% on him. The reason he’s had so many coordinators, QB coaches, and schemes is because he hasn’t been very successful in any of them. Stop one hopping critical throws, or worse throwing to the other team. I’m tired of hearing about “miscommunications”, as that excuse gets real old real quick. If you are having miscommunications, then stop doing Michael Jackson photo shoots in the middle of a losing streak and fix those “miscommunications”. Don’t be the last one to practice the day after a loss (witnessed this first hand).

Back to King, I can’t respect anyone who is so obviously biased. It wouldn’t matter if Dominik got Tom Brady for a bag of chips, he wouldn’t give him any credit. He would say it shouldn’t have gotten to that point, and Freeman is a better QB. There are a handful of people he likes, and they can do wrong. There are a much bigger handful of people he doesn’t like, and they can do no right. There is nothing in the middle. For that reason, his opinion is meaningless, I don’t give two sh!ts what he did or didn’t do during his playing career, nor do I care who he works for now. He is nothing more than Thomas 2.2 with a voice.

  27. PRBucFan Says:

    ^^^^^^ Amen!!!

    BRAVO BRAVO *Applause

  28. Greg Says:

I haven’t posted on here in awhile, but I have to say when Hawaiian Buc gets riled up, he posts some of the most impressive comments on this site! Nice job HB!

  29. Hawaiian Buc Says:

Ha ha, thanks Greg. I actually got riled up as I was typing, lol. I think I am suffering from football deprivation. The season needs to hurry up and get here.

  30. Fish Says:

    @ Joe

You have the disabilities of Helen Keller if you “don’t fully understand” why Bucs fans hate on King. Otherwise, shame on you for you negligence.

  31. scubog Says:

I don’t think anyone’s opinion of a player is based on his race in this day and age. Those days ended with Doug Williams. As far as I’m concerned all of the players are red and pewter. Josh Freeman’s mother is white. Just once I’d like to have Realist post something beneficial to read without the childish nicknames he repeats over and over.
