Todd Bowles: Here Comes The Blitz

Pressure expected.
Joe is pretty sure new Bucs rookie starting quarterback Jalon Daniels dreamed of someday playing the Packers or the Cowboys or the Steelers when he was a kid.
Who knew he would play all three in his first scheduled three starts in the NFL? Provided Daniels doesn’t get hurt, or doesn’t play so badly he gets pulled, Daniels will face those three storied franchises in back-to-back-to-back weeks.
The Bucs host the Packers on Sunday with a road trip to Dallas for a Thursday night game next week, and two weeks from Sunday host the Steelers.
KitKat-eating Bucs coach Todd Bowles had his day-after presser today and he has a pretty good idea what opposing defenses will do with Daniels in the next three weeks.
“Depends on what kind of scheme, but, you know, I’m sure they’ll blitz him a lot and show him a bunch of different looks,” Bowles said. “And I’m sure he’s going to get a lot of pressure.”
That’s just what most teams do to a rookie quarterback. Especially a guy making his first starts in the league.
Imagine how wild it would be if, in the next three games, suddenly Chris Godwin and Emeka Egbuka’s targets and catches spike and the Bucs offense breaks out of its slumber.
Would we have a quarterback controversy in Tampa Bay all of a sudden? Hey, desperate coaches sometimes do desperate things.

You know after yesterday I considered our season pretty much over.With that said I am actually looking to see the kid play. I mean I have no expectations and I don’t think he will be any worse that Baker has been sorry to say. The kid has moxy and moves well in the pocket. He has a great arm and a lot of energy. Hopefully the O Line plays better knowing he is a rookie. The offense was terrible yesterday!!. Maybe a breath of fresh air is good for everyone. I mean comon we are already 0-3 so put him in!!!!.

I told you Todd would have a good defense out there against The Viknbecause he would actually give a crap a little. I thoight we would win but Zac Robinson is just as bad as Bowles. Too bad we dont have Liam Cohen heck ill take Dave( motivational speaker) Canales over Bowles every day of the week. I’ve never seen such a wasted group of talent. Yuck

One thing is for certain. If Jalon does well and we win even one of those games (hopefully we do), Baker will come back chomping at the bit to play lights out and prove he’s the #1.
Maybe the controversy wouldn’t be a bad thing.

The Bucs don’t face another D like the Vikings until week 17 against the Rams. I’m not expecting miracles, but a few wins would be nice.
Wasn’t it Ebuka that got hit in the back with the football? Maybe Daniels should concentrate on getting Godwin the ball.

Great bottom-line question Joe, but me thinks the only possible answer is ‘It depends’. IF Daniels goes 3-0 in his first 3 starts, and the team plays well behind him, Todd would be hard-pressed to reinsert Baker into the starting role & possibly lose that momentum.
The more likely scenario though is that the Bucs go 1-2 (maybe 2-1) with Daniels at the controls. Todd may be under some pressure in that scenario to reinsert Baker (given what the Glazers are having to pay him now) to see if he can get it together and win some games.

He sure as hell didn’t dream of an Oline that is as porous as a sieve, WRs that cant get separation or hold on to balls, a TE that cant block or catch and an OC that is a total moron. i feel sorry for the kid, he is going to be running for his life the whole game.

Noticed BTW that the Vikings traded JJ McCarthy to the Giants. Not much talent out there right now to assume the backup role for Jalon Daniels. Wondering if they’re working on bringing Jake Browning back (looks like he’s still available).

Coach is always right about his upcoming opponents. The gameplans always are impeccable. But there’s no need for extra, in fact, maybe they don’t blitz him at all. Todd is the master of disguise and creating confusion.

Drunkinybor, I’m pretty sure Canales and especially Coen saved Bowles job for a couple years. Keep in mind Bowles picked Robinson just like he picked his buddy the special teams coach last year.

The O line is a mess. It’s probably the changes in scheme and strategy implemented by Zac Robinson. He changed the blocking schemes to fit his system. That’s the reason the O Line is confused and a sieve. The Bucs do not have Bijan Robinson or anyone remotely close. The offensive system installed this year does not work. The coaching staff is too self absorb to realize anything of that magnitude. Nothing changes until there’s a complete ‘expensive’ several year overhaul with a new staff and new general manager. Bye Bye Todd, Jason and friends.

Win or lose it will be intersting to watch. The Vike game was too except for losing in the last few minutes due to Bwles normal Blunders. Should be fun especially ifucs win and the Pack Attack at Ray Jay is Blown away. They have everything to lose.

In my opinion, there would be no controversy if Daniels is winning. If he’s winning, then you don’t re-insert Baker. Period.
That said, Jalon, as a UDFA rookie, is going to have a long row to hoe going up against veteran coaches and first-team defenses.
I hope he does well and brings wins — and we’ll all be very happy if he does, but realistically, it’s going to be a tall order for him to fill. We’ll see next Sunday.

The biggest question I had at the end of the game was why did Zac pretty much abandon the run game in the second half? Bucky obviously got injured, but why didn’t Tucker get any touches? Seemed very strange to me.

Didn’t a Baker have a bonafide competition with a backup (Trask) a few years ago to barely edge him out? Baker is simply an above average backup, that’s it. I wont be shocked if one of his peers is better.

I have been thinking since baker got hurt watch Daniel’s win 3 in a row and keep getting better every week. How do you bench a kid that is doing good. That would be a great problem to have. I think since he is faster a mobile qb is exactly what we need right now u til this offense and line get the new offense figured out. If baker had this kids speed we would probably be 3-0 right now.

A different quarterback maybe this team is 3-0 right now. So if JD10 gets them to 3-3, no way I’d pull him. Let Mayfield sit on the bench.
You claim disrespect and then get paid, you have to show you earned it. Mayfield has been a liability, just like the end of last year. Let him take that time to go back to the film room and practice fundamentals again.

I’m … not even sure Godwin or Egbuka are terribly concerning offense weapons to NFL defenses even if we got them the ball? Godwin hasn’t been relevant for years and even when he was he was more an extremely effective #2 yac / possession receiver. Egbuka started fast and faded when people got tape on him.

Well, vs blitzing teams, you generally run a ton of screens, and try to get the ball out quickly. Also, if they’re blitzing from the edge, some designed QB runs up the gut might have defenders running right past the QB and give up some easy yards.
History, however, says Daniels will really struggle – which is very typical of UDFA QBs who are asked to play early.
And one thing we know for certain is all the Baker Boi(s) will be rooting for Daniels to fail, as if he can do any worse than Baker’s 0-3 record this year.

B. Godwin and Egbuka are just fine. But if I’m Zac, I’d be scheming up about 12 throws to Hurst and another 6 to Tez. Let the rookie and those 2 exciting young receivers go for it. And I ain’t whistling Dixie.

It is beneficial to know in advance when you are going to be the starter. He gets to prepare and review all of it and get reps with the ones. I look forward to seeing him under center. I support Jalon 100%. Baker and this offense were horrific and discombobulated, unwatcheable.

whenever an unknown quarterback has played the bucs in say the past 8-10 years, they show up and play like a pro bowler…
they have career type games vs our bucs…
so i suggest that todd or z-rob pull all the tapes of games had by danny dimes, and the endless others, and study them overnight and “do exactly as they do to us”…
maybe you can get daniels to look like the qb’s that come out of nowhere, and have huge games vs us…
heck the tape and footage is out there…all you have to do is copy it…or at least some of it…

The poor kid didn’t set the world on fire in preseason, he was functional with a bad offense against worse defenses. Remember his experience against a 2nd team defense wasn’t remotely passable.

I’m interested to see what will happen, maybe the offense will respond to him. Mayfield is just a rude, cocky arse who got paid, can’t play, doesn’t take accountability for his mistakes. I thought if the Bucs could beat the Vikings they were gonna beat the Packers as well and right the ship and be 2-2…I still think we beat the Packers, with or without Baker, and the fan base will be roaring that Daniels is the answer, and then he will come crashing down and look like a kid who has never played one down of a real NFL game! At least Sunday will get the fans all riled up

Easton Stick should be the starter. Daniels looked like a deer in the headlights. At least he can run. Stick already knows this offense.We can’t block in the middle of the line and we cannot generate any pass rush on defense. Our qb is under siege, opponents QBs eating sandwiches while surveying the wr routes down field.
Todd will use Daniels as an excuse. Todd is done.
