An Explanation Why Sean Tucker Played So Much On Friday

August 17th, 2026

Doesn’t need extra snaps.

Hey, even a broken clock gets it right twice a day.

The notorious PFF tribe, inventors of the game of football and supreme arbiters of the sport — just ask them — came out with a logical explanation, sort of, as to why Bucs running back Sean Tucker was on the field for much of the first half on Friday night.

Joe typed about not being too happ about this. Why keep Tucker on the field? He’s a valuable cog in the Bucs running attack. Joe did not see any reason why he should have been subjected to additional hits.

For what reason? The Bucs don’t have enough tape on the guy?

Well, Nathan Jahnke didn’t exactly have an excuse, but he did have a plausible explanation. Per Jahnke, the Bucs were shorthanded with running backs.

However, the Buccaneers have only five running backs on their roster. Every other team outside of Tampa Bay and the Las Vegas Raiders has at least six. Teams typically use at least four running backs over the course of a preseason game, but with Irving and Gainwell resting, Tampa Bay had only three available. That context helps explain why Tucker, despite entering his fourth season, was still on the field alongside undrafted rookies.

OK, that makes sense, but still: Why not have Kadarius Calloway and Josh Williams take more carries? Williams is a bubble player with something to prove and Calloway is basically camp meat with much more to prove.

Those guys could use the snaps a whole lot more than Tucker.

Don’t tell me Joe’s figuring out what many of us already knew….

    Bowles sucks.

  2. BiggestBucsFan Says:

Obviously Bowles knows that Zac wanted to see what he has in Tucker first hand.

Don’t act like Todd is some kind of moron.

  3. LouisFriend Says:

The post-bye 2nd half of 2025 saw Tucker average 2.5 yards per carry. A guy getting limited duty needs to be better than that when his number is called.

I have a feeling he’ll end the preseason doing what he did against the Jets a couple more times. It’s worth finding out if he or Williams is the better choice as RB3 in Robinson’s system. Or possibly someone else not on the roster yet.

Well it isn’t gonna ne Calloway any more.

He was replaced by the signing of undrafted free agent Barika Kpeenu, who posted 1,005 yards and 20 touchdowns at North Dakota State in 2025.

  6. First Last Says:

What if Sean Tucker asked to play?

  7. TDTB Says:

It’s possible they wanted live action work on pass protection, or Robinson wanted to see him first hand, or maybe they were showcasing him for a potential trade.or maybe, just maybe, PFF was right.

  8. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

We signed Barika Kpeenu out of NDSU

  9. Fanofdabucs Says:

Truly is absurd. Please solve this great mystery. It’s absolutely inexcusable that a 3rd string RB get FOUR carries!! Plus the guy had to use his hands to catch TWO balls!!

Heads need to roll and someone needs to be held responsible!

    Is this REAL life??

  10. PalmettoJoe Says:

I don’t know if this was the Bucs thinking or not, but from a pure evaluation standpoint, when attempting to solve a problem, it is always best to minimize variables. Therefore, by using a more consistent back such as Tucker for more snaps, it may have made evaluation of other players around him more reliable.

  11. Fanofdabucs Says:

Love him, dislike him or think he “sucks”, but using Joey’s very weird fascination with a 3rd string RB being asked to carry the ball FOUR fing times, as an opportunity to say “see yeah Bowles sucks” “yeah yeah”.

I hear Beavis and Butthead voices in these comments

Cant find this level of “reporting” many places.

  12. Hodad Says:

Plausible, but why have him returning kicks?

  13. KABucs Says:

I’d think this is more Zac than Todd and there’s probably a reason they don’t care to explain to anybody else. If Tucker isn’t picking up a new playbook well, telling the media that is just embarrassing for him. Or maybe there’s something else Zac wanted to see in Tucker beyond camp practices. Non-issue IMO.

  14. RodMunchislowIQ Says:

Played ball at Syracuse NY. Just gave him a few extra Snaps for fans and family

  15. Ncalbucfan Says:

How about Tucker being asked if he’d like to play some extra snaps with the Bucs being short of RB’s and he said yes. It may also have allowed Robinson to throw more knowing he had an experienced RB for pass protection.

Could be as simple as that.

  16. Allen Lofton Says:

Who cares why he was on the field more!!! He’ll be on the roster of 53 players.

  17. Ex-Browns02 Says:

Tucker is durable, if nothing else, so a much lower risk. It will be interesting to see who gets playing time against KC.

  18. Fanofdabucs Says:

Due to Tucker’s huge workload on Friday night, the Bucs were forced to sign another RB

  19. Been there since the beginning Says:

Maybe they know what they have and TDTB pointed out another thought about Tucker for trade. Really he reminds me of the same runner each season, still needs some polishing up here and there so they haven’t developed them Bucky didn’t need much, Gainwell doesn’t need anything but the ball and, we’ll see about the new guy soon. If he can really run the ball, bye bye to a couple of them.

  20. SB~LV 🏈 Says:

    He’s on his way out!
I’ve have seen enough of his 🥱🥱🥱🥱 nothing game
He did have that ONE big game but the bottom line is
If he could, he would have!

  21. View from 132 Says:

what about evaluating all the players around him too? Like linemen. Having an experienced back for a few snaps gives you come film on other guys in the run game. Did Ballsac get them into the right set? Did the line make their calls? Did they execute? Its not just the guy with the ball that needs snaps or not.

  22. Letsbuccingo Says:

Clueless coaching staff led by Bowles
